    I truly failed. I did not get my gun or warn Kim in time I was "smart and strong" not "fast and vocal". Even now I'm not sure if I saved Harry's career HOWEVER I did punch a gremlin Cuno into respect and he helped me find a sniper nest on the island. He defended me at the 11th hour and painted me as a community first - protecter (in his own style) I built a solid main case and helped in side Cases to at least some credit to my name. Not sure if I "won" I was convincing enough to get Cuno a chance to be a cop someday. It wasn't the best end but it was MINE

    Watching this 3 years after it was uploaded, am somewhere towards the end at 21 minutes in. Very poetically praise is sung for ZA/UM, with future projects listed off, followed up by the question "what does failure mean in Disco Elysium?" unbeknownst to you at the time that the aforementioned list would be a list of failure - but one that holds uncertain hope.
    At least one has become hopeful after watching this video, which is a great unintended consequence.

    I've started playing Disco Elysium multiple times, but I find it hard to want to play because I know I won't be "good" at it. I hope this video will help encourage me to embrace, or at least understand, failure.

    Disco Elysium - The aftermath of Disco Inferno
    But in Greek it means "A Discussion towards Heaven"
    Such a clever title. Phoenix like. Rebuilding from the ashes.

    Amazing video, man! I wish Disco Elysium have their own Documentary because looking at the interviews there are always interesting, thought-provoking, and deeper meaning in their UI/UX design, art style, and of course, heavy political discussions.

    I swear, as I was watching this video until about the middle, I thought: "Hm, this guy sure is an interesting TH-camr with a good script. Maybe I should subscribe". And then I saw this number. Underappreciated, that's for sure.

    I literaly went into a mental battle with myself if i should get this game or not. 7 or 8 fuking hours. The reviews are insane, some people reaaaly hate it, some are in love with it. I could not made my mind, and said fuck it.. lets see.
    I got into it, and insta regreted. Like? What the hell, im a drunk guy who doesent know who he is? I alt f4.
    Still something was there. Everytime i restarted, something was different, my perspective, my inner dialogue. Maybe i should make a less smarter guy. Explored some buildings.. and when Shivers zoomed out the camera with some cool dialogue about the rain i realized almost shiting myself "oh shit...this game it's something else!"

    DE is my favorite game and i love video essays about games specifically. but you hit on my biggest media crit gripe of all time when you said that tallinn had punk rock in 1994, and therefore, DE was inspired by it, without ever making any direct connection between Kurvitz and punk. it's a huge reach. my city has a small but well known indie scene, if I write a book or make a game, will people say that I was influenced by it? you had plenty here without bringing Tallinn punk into it (twice)

    • @roDOCS
      @roDOCS  3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      The connection was he was in the local music scene, when he first made the TTRPG setting. Direct influence? Maybe not. But I think it adds to the story and background to bring in where ZA/UM came from, and their roots.
      More-so meant to use it as a vehicle to show overcoming adversity, but perhaps was a bit heavy handed. Cheers for the feedback!

    why is video is so underviewed?

  • @wanidouse
    @wanidouse 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Failure is the Hegelian failure, the gap that seperates all our particulars from their universality. Is not the failure in Disco Elysium the failure of our own world? To be haunted by the past, to be unable to grasp the present, and to fail the future? Is this not what Freud was trying to articulate with his concept of the superego? Dolores Dei is the most evident form of this, totally abandoning Harry, deserting him, leaving him to die alone and not even offering the dignity of solace. I don't mean to bring your essay down, but I'm still restless at your conclusion. Perhaps the symptom is the phasmid, which you failed to talk about all together. Fair enough, you're interested in entertaining, not analyzing. Though, I will say, I think this game is about subjectivity, more than failure, though failure is a necessary part of it.

    this is almost painful to watch after the recent news with za/um... especially the part of disco elysium's development centering the friendship of those who created it. the way this intricate, beautiful, and deeply personal world was stolen from them for the sake of profit. i suppose it might be fitting to see this as an inevitable failure, but one that might lead this team to somewhere good? somewhere that they again wouldn't be asked to, as you put it, back down from their vision. Rostov didn't seem that fond of success in the first place.

    I have to admit, I nearly reloaded my game when a character was shot in the final showdown after a literal snake eyes critical failure. However, I stuck it out. Not only was I able to solve a good chunk of the remaining mysteries, but a *replacement* character showed up which radically changed the ending, and was still able to solve the case. I had to deal with the failure, and it was a stronger story because of it. I'm excited to try additional runs, but that first time through was something special.

    Amazing video, seriously. Disco Elysium became my favourite game of all time and probably the best experiece I've had with an RPG in my whole life. The first time I played it, I didn't saw the game as an RPG, which made me play like another generic RPG, trying to do all correctly, trying not to fail. It took me some time to realize that Harry was a human being and, just like other human beings, he has his flaws. I am in love with Disco Elysium and I can't thank ZA/UM enough for making such a masterpiece. Keep up the good work. Greetings from Brazil.

  • @robotempire
    @robotempire 3 ปีที่แล้ว +38

    The game is so good (I only started playing a couple weeks ago) IMO because it is ruthlessly authentic. If they have to choose between “RPG set in the world of Disco Elysium” and “a game delivered in the format that can best deliver the story the artists want to tell” I hope they choose the latter.
