Any person who isn't high on ego an possibly other substances can tell that death stranding was a bad game. The question isn't why they saw the truth but why hideous kojima ignored the facts.
Furthermore none of the quirky metal gear solid stuff even made it into his vision meaning that those things were what he was making such a big deal about. This is what he wanted to make ultra serious nonsense.
Take for example the fact that japanese people are less able to control themselves when they take drugs look at japanese voice actors for proof. They legit go off the rails my guess is he is high on something to think this was a good game.
@@Ave_Satana666 I think it takes a certain amount of understanding for the world with a much higher perspective than that of a simple man in society. To actually understand what a great game and story Death Stranding is. So much work done in such short time by only about 80 people. That is admirable. But it really do take a certain type of person to acknowledge that. Everyone can talk trash about a square statue if they want. But not many can see the actual struggles and the hard work behind rising that square statue in one night. To understand these types of wonders, you most you yourself have been part of creating some at one point. Good day to you Ave.
I casually bumped into Kojima outside of San Diego comic con long time ago. The day was over and he was being escorted to his vehicle. My friend was dressed as Big Boss and Kojima took notice. He asked to take a picture with my friend. It’s the one photo I will never forget taking! Kojima is a gentleman and a genius. It’s inspiring to see him continue his work after what happened with Konami. Never give up on what you love 👌
The live announcement that Kojima wasn't allowed to accept HIS award is among the most embarrassing moments in gaming history. Konami really did a bold faced villain move in front of a live audience, despicable.
I agree with you, but guess what! Look at what Kojima has achieved. Everyone wants to collaborate with him, and the best part is when Guerrilla Games heartily gave him the entire code for the Decima engine. Kojima’s influence in the gaming industry is indeed legendary.
he got what he deserves, he's a hack, creatively bankrupt, and has done nothing creative to begin with but copypaste things he liked in western media into his games.
Why do you think it's his award? The Metal Gear games weren't made by Kojima, they were made by Konami studio. He was fired for a reason, and had no deal with it anymore.
@@MetalGearyaTV Hideo was the director, designer, lead producer, and lead writer for every Metal Gear game including Phantom Pain, the series doesn't exist without Hideo, and snubbing him from receiving the reward is Konami shitting on the head of the creator of one of their most popular franchises. They threw the baby out with the fucking bath water, and all Konami managed to do was make themselves look bad and project Kojima to further success.
@@HarukoJisan you're writing this because you're on Kojima side. I personally consider him as nothing more than a talentless hack. it's so heart warming that kojima being a pretty introverted person made so many connections and had so many people help him through out his carrier because he did his job fondly and helped the industry
@@aturchomicz821 nah it has nothing to do with being introvert or extrovert, it's the person that has the merit, extrover or introvert, we can all make great stuff

I love how the director of Guerilla just deadass commissioned a box and unique storage device with the entire source code of his engine as a gift. Like you said, no attachments, no agreements, just legit a gift. That to me is something that cannot be overstated as a form of actual pure kindness. He wanted to see Kojima succeed, nothing more, nothing less. There are seldom moments in the gaming industry like that, but hoo boy, they are more meaningful than we can ever imagine.

@MetalGearyaTV haha, i was tryna reference the old meme of mgs games just being movies :P I can't find the original comment thread I asked so i dont know if youve already replied, but I asked you a bit ago what disappointed you about mgsV. Full transparency, I was a fan of it, even if it was a little undercooked, but I'm genuinely just wanting to know, not trying to start an argument or anything.
@@ShtikMahn Kojima became a 'director' in vidya precisely because he was incapable to breakthrough into real film industry. In the 80s-90s the video game industry became a haven for such losers and hacks as we know it.
@MetalGearyaTV I understand that the "kojima is a hack thing" is your thing in this comment section but just so you know, I'm no die hard crazy KOJIMAISAGOD guy, I just enjoy mgs. Honestly just curious what you didn't enjoy about TPP or mgsV in general.
@@ShtikMahnIn my opinion, MGSV is nothing like MGS in terms of storytelling. It's simply not a Metal Gear game. And even without counting that, this game is simply outdated in how the missions are presented. Imagine GTA6 where 80% of the MAIN, not side missions are like 'kill 20 gangsters', 'destroy 3 cars', and that's it. No backstory, no cutscenes, nothing. And the story is most hollow, shallow and contrived in terms of ideas and everything. But that's a very long talk.
This whole story is making me emotional. What gets to me is that Hideo is making a game about making connections with other even when you feel apart, and his whole journey to create his studio was him feeling alone but then all the connections he's made over the years supported him and gave him what he needed to create his achievements. There's the whole part of his team not understanding the game and questioning the appeal but they still went with it and kept at it until they found themselves having fun. It's just so beautiful that Kojima couldn't get a loan because he had no actual results, but then he found a banker who was a fan of his work and gave him the loan. When he wanted a certain building he was denied because his company wasn't publicly traded, but one of the owners was a fan so he was allowed to get the office. The power of inspiring people.
When I first played Death Stranding, I was into it, liked it well enough to put in about 85 hours and beat the game. But the feeling of being in the game stayed with me like a brain worm, and I started a new game just to be there again. I still think about it a lot. I would love more games to release that are built around positivity and togetherness, even when it feels like the world is pushing you the other way.
And then i was lucky enough to start playing it right at the start of the Covid lockdowns, when i was stuck in my house 24/7 with almost zero social contact. I played it at the most thematically appropriate time and place possible, and it became the greatest gaming experience of my life
Low Roar hadn't really heard of Kojima until he got in touch to set up a meeting. Ryan told his brother in law I think he was going to meet with Kojima and he wanted his music in game and the brother in law told him to go 100% with it and give Kojima whatever he wanted. It was unlikely he would've told Kojima no, but still.
astounding how even one of the most successful and visionary designers gets told by accountants and executives that "it's a dumb idea" whenever they present something new. i think its one of lifes permanent issues. people with ideas having to get through a wall of people with NO ideas. Be fair on both sides if you say that if you gave someone millions to make a game and in that ten year span bro used that money and almost finished it and started another game which is a completely different contract
I rather enjoyed Death Stranding. The gameplay wasn't the most exciting thing in the world, and the story was about as comprehensible as German folktales being read aloud by Cthulhu. But Kojima had an idea for a weird game that was never going to be a commercial smash-hit, and by God, he was going to see that it got made. I really respect that, and it was nice to play a game that didn't feel like I'd already played it a million times before. Which is of course, why many people didn't like it.
Death Stranding 1 has the most easily understood Kojima game story by far in terms of consistency. If you watch a lot of movies or read a lot of books, you'll have an easier time understanding what's going on.
I can forgive the game for all its shortcomings because I absolutely love the world. The music, sounds, even UI, is beautiful, I wish we could have explored so much more.
@@roastpork5437That's a moronic, pretentious statement, the story is flat out riddled with lorr contradictions and stuff that got added just because Kojima thought it was cool and shoehorned it into the game. I still loved DS, and liked to story for what it was, but saying that people "just aren't smart enough" for it will just get you laughed out of the room by anyone who is even slightly worth their salt.
Death Stranding and the first Dishonored are the only game that gives legit and logical reason to avoid both combat and killing. No forcing moral pov to people
Metro series comes to mind when talking about forced pov morality. To get true ending, you have to spare all of the human enemies even the most wicked antagonist because k1LL1nG iS bAd. It won't be that bad if the stealth mechanic is not half ass and the game actually gives you non-lethal weapon, because getting close and punch every enemy is incredibly tedious
@@Petmyhead while MGS series give us plenty of non-lethal method to neutralize enemies, it still lack of logical reason why we shouldn't kill every enemies we fight. Especially MGSV
Stupidly I listened to the negative criticism and avoided this game until recently when, out of pure curiosity, I installed it and gave it a shot. That was 4 months ago, I'm on my second playthrough aiming for a second Platinum trophy on an alt-account. I'm already thinking about my third playthrough and how I want to experience the game, opting to play the vanilla digital deluxe edition with no online assist; just me, Sam, BB and the environment. I haven't been able to think about anything else, and knowing there is DS2 on the horizon just deepens my fascination with this game. I'm really happy that I gave it a chance and truly believe this to be one of the greatest video gaming experiences I've had so far. This was a great video, I hope it gives somebody else the nudge they need to give it a fair chance.
I got nervous on release day because of the negative criticism, but there were also reviewers and people saying it's exactly what they wanted from Hideo Kojima. So I went out and bought it anyway and immediately fell in love with it. It's one of my all time favorite games. Glad to hear you liked the video and I also hope it encourages people to give the game a try!
Funny story: I intentionally avoided everything about the game because I didn't want to spoil anything. Got the game release day and dumped a hundred hours into it like nothing, which is super rare for me these days, and was like "well let's see what the internet has been saying about this great game" and was super suprised to see all the hate lmao
It's a fascinating, inventive, beautiful game in many ways, and a genuinely unique and fresh experience. Every actor in top form, and a perfect slow burner the likes of which we rarely see anymore. I seriously cannot wait for the next game. Keep on keepin on 👍👍👍👍👍👍
25 years from now: "Death came to Kojima, and he asked to stay a few more years. Death denied his request, but since Jesus was a big fan of Kojima, his request was granted"
Watching this video made me realized video games are in a cycle of capitalism where passionate people make the industry which then get occupied by opportunist with deep pockets until it crashes down and a new generation of passionate people rebuild it.
The problem NOW is companies being bankrolled by Communist billionaires so now they don't even care about making games people want in the first place. This is much more dangerous, because instead of causing the collapse of individual game companies, it's going to cause the collapse of the entire industry
bro that's how ALL of art works, cinema, painting, literature, comics, animation, you name it, art is a constant battle between business and passion, it always has been and it always will be
Your motion design work keeps getting better and better. I think this one in particular is probably one of your best yet in terms of editing. I'm not sure anyone else on TH-cam right now is doing this level of games journalism combined with actually stellar visual storytelling. The iconography and images inside the wireframe diamonds is a small but brilliant little touch from the UI/UX of Death Stranding, and I see you for that. Everything just flows so effortlessly together. You're always a priority watch for me when you post
Thank you for the kind words, Evan! Always means a lot when people point out the editing and motion design, I put a ton of work into that aspect. This one especially went through a lot of rounds of edits so I'm glad it shows :D
It was always my wish with Kojima's career that he would be given the keys to his own projects and so far I'm very happy he got that chance and ran with it. There isn't a lot of Triple A titles that are like Death Stranding, something that doesn't try to ape as something that it isn't. I hope he continues to work on projects he feels strongly about because that's when he is at his best. Oh yeah, he also has a kickass taste in films, the guy is a total film nerd worth his salt.
When I interviewed Kojima around a decade ago, he really is as humble as he appeared, loves a good joke and is very sharp. I even candidly asked him if he would ever consider a game where Zone of the Ender mechs would fight MGS mechs, he laughed a bit and said unlikely. He also expressed interest in making a game based on Grey Fox, but there were no plans at the time.
I remember Placing a full set of Grappling lines from the top of the mountain in the second map to the bottom skipping over an enemy camp. The best feeling was taking the line from one end to the other.
I did that too but it spanded over the entire mountain to 2 different drop off points I feel Like I skipped the majority of the second half of the game because they would give me alot of missions that went between thoes 2 exact drop offs but I had the zipline so they were so easy I feel like I was not ment to do that because the mountain was infested with BT's and I got caught several times setting up the line
It was so much rewarding when you went to a new place to set up a zip line creating a whole network and then using that network to easily travel anywhere. Such an awesome game.
Great video, this man has inspired me for my whole adult life. I'm glad he's doing what he loves and I hope he continues to do so for as long as he wants to.
I mean, being independent doesn't mean it won't be AAA just means it doesn't have corporate shoving down their quickness to release and/or directive and/or development involvement that makes the game less original than what it was and making it a failure
It isn't technically, it *is* an indie game by all definition. Indie doesn't exactly mean low-quality/budget/fidelity, it's just that indie studio generally results in that. The game is just designed backed by a solid funding and isn't under the umbrella of large publishers because the lead person is a prominent figure in his industry.
@@givemorexp I don't think you understood anything I said. You do know that being published by a company doesn't mean you are owned by them? Sony cannot walk into Kojima Production and say they want to layoff a percentage of the studio's personnel like they did with Santa Monica studios. Or sell LumiPro off as asset to other companies. Do you even know what you're trying to argue?
@@seri-ously8591 do you know what 'indie' means? Because according to you, pretty much every developer which is not owned by a publisher makes indie games. Yes, they are indipendent devs but their games are not indie. Indie game is when developer makes and publish themselves, Hellblade for example by Ninja Theory. This line is now blurred when you have publishers like Devolver Digital though. Sony not owning KojiPro doesn't mean DS is an indie game. Sony still was in charge of a budget and was overseeing a project. KojiPro and Kojima are independent but their games are not indie.
The fact that Hideo Kojima ran into every possible wall and still managed to climb over it and thrive goes to show how passion and kindness go so far in making it. His vision and connections built upon each other to help him achieve success, and because of that we got to experience more of his work while reinforcing that very image of him. This world is full of struggle and no people, whenever there is creative work at play the risk is always substantial. Because people *have* to like it, otherwise your value and worth gets thrown out the window, unlike if you were to help create medicine or food. What we can get from this tale is that no matter the circumstance, as long as you have a passion and strive for more, never let go of it even within your toughest struggle, because there are others like you who will see the value of your efforts and together bring forth your true potential. A great video!
In the second paragraph you're absolutely right -- from a purely economic standpoint people should appreciate your work, and costs should be lesser than revenue. Kojima with all his passions failed as we know, since DS underperformed in terms of profits. So he's not a very successful creator in this regard. And that's understandable -- Kojima is just a talentless hack who gained his notoriety on the backs of others. All his later games are complete BS, and just a pale imitation of what 'he' had done before. Those who don't get it are just clueless.
@@TheJohn_Highway you're projecting, man. Kojima is a complete hack, and many Metal Gear fans know this for the longest, at least since MGS4 release. More than 16 yrs now.

I played this game for 80+ hours and I loved it exactly because it is something very different. Its experimental in a way Indie games usually are able to get away with, yet it has the scope and polish of a big budget game. This is not the usual bogstandard AAA checklist game that is so painfully mediocre to the point it is worse than a bad game. All in all, I am looking forward to Death Stranding 2 and any future games from his studio.
MGS and Death Stranding are among my favorite franchises not only in gaming, but in media in general. Whenever I see people try and argue games aren't art, I just tell them to play any Kojima game, and then get back to me. There's always a deeper message in his games. Someone once told me you know a good movie when you can watch it multiple times and get something new every time. That's what playing a Kojima game is like. The first time is kinda confusing, but on repeat playthroughs, things make a lot more sense. He's a master at giving just the right amount of info to keep you curious but not give away the twist till the very end. Not to mention the multi-hour long cutscenes that could be entire feature-length movies themselves (not everybody's cup of tea, I get it, but I love them.) He really does push the medium forward, it's crazy to think this was his vision since the NES days. So ahead of his time, but luckily, technology caught up to him. Can't wait for DS2 and OD.
Holy shit that was such a good video. I put this on as background but ended up just intently watching all of it. Great stories, great research, very well paced. I feel inspired to make things.
death stranding is my favorite game of all time as it pushed me as a gamer and brought in new concepts and game styles that I had never experienced and made me rethink about video games as a whole. I truly think most of the people that don’t like death stranding hardly gave it a chance and went in unwilling to try something new
What a brilliant video about Hideo Kojima. I wonder if Kojima misses Metal Gear Solid or if he has simply moved on and poured his love into Death Stranding instead. He is simply a brilliant game creator. MGS was his baby, and Kojima’s transition from Metal Gear Solid to Death Stranding is fascinating to me.
Holy changing title sherlock. How many times did the title change? First his coworkers thought he was crazy, then companies hated him and now he overcame his enemies. The arc of this video's changing titles is so crazy hahahaha
Understanding what happened between him leaving and making a new game really opened my eyes to something which I have always criticized. Games being anounced so early. It's clear he had no choice. He needed backing. He needed people to believe or else no one would back him personally and financially.
Why did he announce Physint so early then? Realistically the game will be released around 2030, or even later. Fanboys believe Death Stranding was a success, and Kojima is firmly standing on the ground with Sony. Actually Death Stranding was a flop, and the prospects of DS2 don't look great since it's the same hacky walking sim nobody asked for. Kojima needs to build hype around new game preemptively saying he will be back to his roots. He's in a dire situation.
@@TheChannel1978 In the Director's Cut version of the game it was just replaced with Bridges Energy, the game in-universe alternative. No one knows why, aside from the obvious assumption that the Monster sponsorship might have passed.
The cool thing about Death Stranding is that I never *really* feel alone. I always feel connected because i see bridges and ladders left behind by other porters, roads that are getting built, and signs left behind everywhere so I end up feeling like other people are out on the journey with me, its a great feeling
It does have a similar vibe. tho with Death Stranding there's no way to send messages, it's just possibly helpful objects or structures. The messages in Dark Souls/ Elden Ring are great and inside jokes are birthed from it but it's so flooded with ppl making jokes that it's most of what you see rather than help. I'd love to see more game do these kinds of mechanics. p.s. I was gonna abbreviate Death Stranding to DS but realized we're also talking about Dark Souls and that would be very confusing. There's a surprising number of media that can be abbreviated to DS.
the community system is wild. it's so much more than messages or bridges. the more you do for the community the more buildings of others you see. everywhere a player walks the server keeps track of and removes more and more rocks the more players walk there, till eventually you have a smooth player created trail, only that most players won't know that they are creating it. you can find packages players dropped, which you can deliver for them, or return to them. you can leave behind messages that will give others a little stamina boost, or soothe BB.
I sobbed for 10 minutes after completing my 95 hour playthrough of Death Stranding. I don't know if it was because I felt heartbroken that it was over, or that I found its themes and story very moving, or that I was proud of what I had achieved, or that I felt a sense of overwhelming relief that I was finally done with it. I can't recall any game that has affected me so much like that.
Did you really cry after your Playthrough? I just can't imagine it. I've never cried after playing a video game. The closest I came was the walking dead video game season 1 ending. Mostly felt sad, but still crying for 10 minutes from this game (which i love btw) is wild to me.

I’m just playing it for the first time with the Xbox release and it is definitely one of the most unique games I’ve played. I could see how it’s not for everyone but I love it.
In an era where most games lack innovation and are filled with predatory means of monetization, Death Stranding was a fresh breath of air regardless of people liking the game or not.
Wrong fanboy take. 1st of all, the game is astoundingly hacky, contrived, and atrocious in terms of story and writing, and very weak conceptually -- it's a walking sim nobody asked for. To put it simply, it's a very bad game, so it being 'unique' does not make it good. 2nd of all, the game underperformed financially. @@ThatGuyGlen I recall during an interview the team was also throwing ideas at him and he would just add them and build off of them. I do remember a few questions asking about gun combat but that was after the release of the game.
No computer owned by Kojima Productions. I think it was less of a "we don't have access to a computer for this" and more of a "let's do this on paper because it suits the state of the company". That sounds like a thing Kojima would say.
HIdeo Kojima NEEDS to be reigned in. Him and Konami need each other. Konami needs the artist with a vison. Kojima needs a team to keep him making something playable. We've seen what each puts out without the other and it's always half-assed. The best of their works was together.
The latter MGS games (4 and V) were kinda uninspiring, especially the last. Kojima is actually a hack with no real skills. MGS1-2-3 were written by Tomokazu Fukushima.
@cleverowl5595 kinda generic take. I know about the problems with genetics in MGS1, but the story is still alright, gives something to think about, and has *very* cool moments and even lines. And MGS2 is simply majestic. Conspirology is just a backdrop for the awesome and really deep story. The final conversation with AI is simply a masterpiece. And I'm not a big fan of MGS3. The thing is, MGS1-2-3 ofc all are very flawed story/scriptwise, but have something to compensate their drawbacks in the same time. The latter games simply have nothing in this area. Sorry, but MG2 doesn't come close to these three games simply because of its volume and its antiquity. It's too short, simplistic, and nothing but a collection of clichés. It's fun sometimes, but not more. To set it against later games favourably is really strange. They are much more sprawling and mature, like it, or not.
It’s not going to happen as look at Halo made by Bungie, due to them not being interested in staying with Microsoft we got 343i’s run from Halo 4 to Infinite, now named Halo Studios. And Bungie had a good run with Destiny 1 but 2 was just a half baked repeat. Making me unsure about Marathon. Basically like what happened with the Metal Gear series as Survive was a big miss. But Death Stranding is a Gem in the industry compared to any other games in the recent years.
I doubted Kojima's "walking simulator" but 4 years later when i couldnt find a game to play i decided "fuck it why not play death stranding lets just give it a shot". I tried it a bit, got so intrigued at the start, and got so immersed the more i played. I finished it and it ended up being one of the best games ive ever played in my life.
I remember i simply bought the game because it's discount sale and, hoo boy, i really enjoyed every part of it, and i am not really want to rushed to finish the game because i want to enjoy the world and explore things. I think i understand Kojima's vision, kindness, empathy and connect each others to give different perspective and methods to get across a certain route, and as for me, i remember i build some solar powered bike charging stationary on many spots that i think people will get through with their bikes. Truly amazing.
Great video as always. I didn't expect the details of his childhood and the influences he had from that going into this, but it added a lot and made me see his work in kind of a new light.
Much appreciated, glad to hear you liked it! There’s so much more to cover when it comes to Kojima’s childhood but I mainly wanted to focus on what directly influenced Death Stranding so I’m glad to hear the extra context did help.
It is a general success recipe in a fear society where mistrust is everywhere. In the darker aspects it can express as nepotism. But of course it is comforting to know people you 'vibe' with. It makes it unnecessary to explore that, so it is also a bit of a convenience, and thus ironically a conservative approach even if the project you are aiming for is daring.
It has to be EXHAUSTING to deal with teammates and people who keep saying your ideas suck. Add guns, no, where are the weapons?, no, how is this going to be fun?, youll see when we put more work into it. Gotta give kojima props for sticking to his vision of the game in the face of so many negative perceptions 😎👍
What a heartwarming story, Death Stranding's whole premise was always kinda weird to me but knowing Kojima fought tooth and nail to keep his vision of hope and connecting the world in a positive way making a whole game built around that. Sometimes we may seem small, and we do things that may seem small to us but have a lot of impact either on the world around us or others. A smile, a thank you, just being nice to a stranger just because it's nice to be nice. That's what making the world a better place is about.
Crazy that Kojima is 61, because he literally looks like he's in his 40s. Even considering that a lot of Asian people don't age the same way as westerners he looks really young
I imagine many of the people who dislike Death Stranding never made it to the central region. The starting eastern region is pretty underwhelming and is basically a big long tutorial area. The game really opens up and comes into it's own once you reach central region. To anyone who bounced off this game after only playing few hours or so, I highly recommend giving it another go.

I'm not glad talentless people like Kojima get to the positions they do. It's typical injustice we often see in this life. And those enabling him are a part of this evil.
@@MetalGearyaTV Doesn't that make you, as someone with the name "MetalGear" and a picture of Snake very very evil!? I sense your evil essence Kojima supporter, you cannot fool me with a mere hood of disingenuous words
@@LoftyAssertions Man, don't you know that Kojima is a very controversial figure in the core MG community precisely? Many dislike him heavily for his talentless contribution, and especially for what he's done in MGS4 and V. And Death Stranding is absolutely awful, astoundingly bad. Kojima is nothing more then shameless Hack-Fraudman, and those who support him support hackiness, tastelessness, and underserved fame. Kojima is a fake celebrity for normies and poseurs.
I respect the guy but his vision seems to have come at the cost of professional relationships. He really screwed over David Hayter with MGSV, with David only finding out he was passed over on the project in favor of Kiefer Sutherland after he phoned someone on the production team and asked if they were going to set up recording sessions. Kojima never even told David in person or apologized. Furthermore, he made Hayter audition for every single game featuring Snake, even though the character had been synonymous with Hayter’s signature voice. Again, great visionary but I think he prioritizes his vision and getting renowned actors in his projects far more than being loyal to his existing staff.
I think Kojima's end game is to build enough connections and goodwill with Hollywood so he can drop the games industry and start making movies. Throughout his entire career, Kojima has been openly apathetic if not somewhat hostile towards video games. All the while being a clear cinephile.
Kojima isn't suddenly going to start making movies in his 60s. He has three games coming in the next couple of years. DS2, OD and the new stealth ggame. He'll be near 70 when hes done assuming they all come out with 2 years of each other. @Sam-lf3hn
It's not well-informed. It's a very generic normie pseudocool 'gamer' take on Dojima. Real gamers actually know Kojima is completely shameless Hack-Fraudman, nothing more.
I know Death Stranding isn’t for everyone, but I’ve grown to love it in a way I didn’t expect. Yes, it's set in a post-apocalyptic world, but there’s a strange sense of peace that washes over me while playing. There’s something calming about just delivering packages, moving through the quiet, desolate landscapes. It almost feels meditative at times. One of my favorite aspects is the connection you feel with other players, even though you never actually meet them. Finding a ladder or a bridge someone else left behind when you’re struggling is such a simple but powerful reminder of hope. Even in a world that can feel isolating and challenging, you realize you’re not completely alone. I get that the story is hard to wrap your head around, and the gameplay isn’t for everyone. But if you can embrace its slower pace and give it time, you might end up loving it like I do.
Death stranding is very niche and it wasnt really a good idea. And kojima blamed the complaints on shooter fans. He claims this isa new genre but it really isnt. So I dont think death stranding is underrated or overrated. Its rated.
First of all as an obvious metal gear fan, and someone who loves themes that Kojima explored, death stranding really did had flaws but not at mechanics at gameplay ironicly at acting story pacing, and world building logic, it litteraly needs to its own video to explain this but for short i think sam uniting world without any ideology or belief sounded really wrong and illogical, people change their entire mindset just because you help them ? at the game rather than we are uniting people we are litteraly just giving internet connection to locals, funny enough Sam also doesnt give any emotions properly he is mostly has one facial mimic ( why da heck im here "look") and almost nothing else, i can say the same for rest of the cast too, i really didnt like the acting i cant see any mimic properly and even when they do it looks strange ( i think they are trying to give A24 movies strangeness feeling which looks ridicilous ) , characters just looks strangely too screen, and omg the dialogues, does kojima realy thinks anyone even the greatest minds talk like this in real life, people at death stranding does not have character but concepts and at a game that you dont have a enemy to defeat ( I know rigs exist but he is not the main concern ) and main focus of the game is the people we meet, i think it really fails to do so, I can understand the fustration of people who says they didnt like gameplay but i think they need to give it a chance and gain access to main map of the world ( i think its at 3rd or 4rd act of the game ) which becomes something very extra ordinary and i have never seen before.
After playing the game I was so thankful that the live multiplayer system was passive. It had the intended effect of me thinking about other players who might have been there and anytime I was out of ladders/gear but saw one placed by another kind player that ended up helping me out made feel really glad. Only to watch this documentary and now realizing how much he fought for this idea, makes me feel even more thankful of the games existence!
It was mixed, they deleted all of the negative reviews before the game awards to justify it being there. Kojima has a bit of a history getting anything negative about him deleted.
@@triforce1311 First of all, Castle Wolfenstein 1981 was the first stealth game long before Metal Gear. Second of all, Thief The Dark Project was released at the same time with MGS1, and it was a much more deep and immersive stealth game.
Kojima should have attended that award ceremony and accept the prize. After all, he was already fired. Konami couldn't do anything about it. If it was a lifetime achievement award, that's nothing to do with anyone but the recipient of the award.
Honestly, what Konami did was a freakin’ spite move. Makes me believe there was a more personal reason behind Kojima being fired, and I personally feel it was on Kojima.
By nature video games are designed so that you play them then throw them down, Death Stranding is different. I've been playing since lockdown and haven't finished by choice, I have logged a whopping 2000 hours in Death Stranding on very hard, the gameplay loop is one of the best.
Yeah, writing is horrible and all the weird things are not explained. Nevertheless, the landscape, the music, the gameplay is beautiful.@@MetalGearyaTV
I've never played a game like Death Stranding. It was such a high production game and I would recommend it to people and they would blow it off. It was quite a grind for platinum, but I love the HZD tributes, and overall gameplay. The timefall and off-road driving was a little frustrating, but I've never seen anything like it. Oh, and play on your birthday, I got more greetings and cheer than in real life. Such a unique and crazy experience. Some would call it genius.
i love playing death stranding, the exploration part is my favorite, conflict isn't something that is force to you. You can avoid it, but it cost you to planned your route carefully, especially if you decide to hike the mountain to avoid confrontation with the Human enemy or BT. you have to bring spare boots, ladder, ropes, and really considering how much cargo you should bring with you and ohh boy i like to bring huge amount of cargo to challenge myself. it's really fun for me....
This game really was a slow burn for everybody. We all, including myself, bemoaned the game as a "walking simulator." It's tedious and strange, and the core game play involves just walking around, but...then you understand that the game is the hike. It's not an escape from reality, but a celebration of it. It's one of the strangest games ever made with an extremely bizarre narrative. No wonder everyone reacted the way they did to the concept, because it was so alien. I'm glad it exists.
This makes me want to buy Death Stranding now to support him and his studio. 5 years (and counting) of chronic environmental violence have given me C-PTSD, forcing me to constantly have to distract myself with a torrent of stimuli to avoid the extreme fear and violence. Death Stranding, as far as I could see, is a pretty calm game, it doesn't seem to be something that will help my anxiety. But after seeing how 99.9% of Japan collectively threw him in the dirt despite being the most renowned gaming director in the industry by far and for good reason (in an industry that makes more money than all media and music combined), after seeing that culture try to stifle all his life's dreams and potential to improve humanity's lives out of pure uncooperative prejudice... Studios like Kojima seem like something you have to proritize supporting even if it hurts you. Because the consequences of letting this life-ruining economy keep it's undeserved power will be far more painful than any other event. Do the math, trying to understand human suffering even if you haven't experienced much. One traumatizing event is less painful than a slave's lifestyle in a lifetime. Some personal hardship is not as bad as an entire society deprived of self-control for wellbeing purposes, if for no other reason than that society would create millions more cases of hardship in time. The economy lost the power necessary to improve it's collective behaviors enough to stop it from cannibalizing itself. Supporting independent studios like Kojima's, workplaces that are not fully controlled by a corporate contract solely interested in maximal greed, is the only way to fight back this tenacious anthropophagy.
Its a great game. Keep in mind though while the game is definitely on the less heavy combat side theres still some combat and can definitely be a disturbing game. But its still a very peaceful game that focuses more on traversing the landscape and overcoming environmental obstacles rather than other people. its also reinforced through gameplay with its asynchronous co-op feature where tools you leave behind can be used by other players, even if you never physically see them in game.
I get why people don't like death stranding. It's really weird and confusing and different. It took me a few years to finish it. I played for a few days at a time, got really addicted then just put it down for months but by the last few hours of the game I fell in love and only wanted more. I'm glad other people like it as much as I do and he decided to make a second one.

Death Stranding could be considered as something worthwhile only under the 'contemporary art' guise, but after DS I absolutely admit contemporary art is the last refuge of a scoundrel.
I dont think a have ever played a game that means as much as Death Stranding. It honestly puts the whole gaming industry to shame that so few games even comes close having the simple meaning that Death Stranding does. I recently replayed it after not having played it since i completed it when it first came out. I realised how much of my personality, ideology and stance on issues comes from this one game. If it is not objectively the most meaningful game ever, i’m pretty sure it is the most meaningful game to me.
Kojima is a hack, he cannot write, he cannot do art, he cannot do messaging properly. And he's totally clueless about science (physics, biology etc) and philosophy. Death Stranding is a laughable hacky contrived mess.
I ended up buying Pop Virus physical CD from Japan after playing Death Stranding. The song was not on the official Death Stranding soundtracks, but I loved being out in the desolation and coming a cross a structure that had been upgraded and had this infectious pop song playing. And since I couldn’t understand the lyrics, it was more about the feeling of the sound. Loved it.

What gets to me is that Hideo is making a game about making connections with other even when you feel apart, and his whole journey to create his studio was him feeling alone but then all the connections he's made over the years supported him and gave him what he needed to create his achievements. There's the whole part of his team not understanding the game and questioning the appeal but they still went with it and kept at it until they found themselves having fun.

interesting to think that Death Stranding is still technically an indie game
I mean, being independent doesn't mean it won't be AAA
just means it doesn't have corporate shoving down their quickness to release and/or directive and/or development involvement that makes the game less original than what it was and making it a failure
@@seri-ously8591No it isn't 😂 it's published by Sony which is a publicly traded company. What are you even on about.

Never played Death Stranding but the description of the community system reminded me of the messages in dark souls.
Now imagine if instead of just messages it's bonfires or shortcuts. That's what this system is.
Keep on keeping on 👍🏻

It's not a breath of fresh air, it's actually a nail in the coffin of the idea of making something new and fresh.

Maybe what he meant was a network of gaming development system. A data server, render farm, and several clients, or something alike.
No computer owned by Kojima Productions. I think it was less of a "we don't have access to a computer for this" and more of a "let's do this on paper because it suits the state of the company". That sounds like a thing Kojima would say.
I mean when you have Yoji Shinkawa it doesnt really matter xD That man is a wizard when it comes to drawing

His team were initially in opposition to his initial concepts for DS, and that is the aspect which represents the “enemy”.

I really want this guy to do a video on the dark soul series ❤

Awesome, thank you for saying that!

"Why the team disliked making a mailman game."
Seems obvious imo
I get why people don't like death stranding. It's really weird and confusing and different. It took me a few years to finish it. I played for a few days at a time, got really addicted then just put it down for months but by the last few hours of the game I fell in love and only wanted more. I'm glad other people like it as much as I do and he decided to make a second one.
maybe cover failure stories of bad or rushed games too. i think it can be really interesting to tell the story from the opposite turn of events. but anyways i absolutely adore your content and editing style! keep up the amazing work!!
As long as it has an interesting development history , I’m open to cover any indie game :D
People simply just dont understand strand type games where you walk, drink Monster Energy™, walk, watch cutscenes that makes no sense without a 2 hour long youtube video breakdown of the lore, walk, drink Monster Energy™, admire norman reedus and his funky baby, and finally drink more Monster Energy™. Truly an artistic masterpiece. Modern Art: The Game.
Death Stranding could be considered as something worthwhile only under the 'contemporary art' guise, but after DS I absolutely admit contemporary art is the last refuge of a scoundrel.
😂😂
dude just told a very superficial information. where are takes about team and kojimas vision?
NICE NEW UPLOAD! Can you do the making of tunic?
Thank you! Tunic is next ;)
@@ThatGuyGlen I really like that game. I always feel so inspired to play the latest game you talked about in your videos
Completely agree. Is the direction I wish the game industry goes ❤
@@jampietri583 so you love hacky tasteless fetch games in a dead open world?
I ended up buying Pop Virus physical CD from Japan after playing Death Stranding. The song was not on the official Death Stranding soundtracks, but I loved being out in the desolation and coming a cross a structure that had been upgraded and had this infectious pop song playing. And since I couldn’t understand the lyrics, it was more about the feeling of the sound. Loved it.
