I loved Disco Elysium, almost as much as I love the true, blue, rags-to-riches story of Contact Mike, who managed to, in face of adversity growing up poor in the slums of Sainte Baptiste, rise to heavyweight champion, and show us all excellence, both inside and outside the ring.
I love how most players will never find out about Contact Mike, the 5000-1 outsider, the man who proved that fights aren't won; they're made, blow by blow
Disco Elysium made me realise how seldom games actually make me laugh out loud. The game is a masterpiece, but its humour is what really sticked with me a couple of years after I played it.
I played Disco Elysium during the darkest period of my life. When credits rolled I cried because it felt like a dear friend who had made me laugh, comforted me and gave me the courage to go on had gone away and it was not likely I'd ever find someone who could do the same. I hope I will.
Try to be that person yourself! It's not easy, but has to be done! You will need it for your future. Please believe me. I've been there and still am. The struggle is more than worth it. You are worth it.
Disco Elysium is probably the best game I've ever played. Every time I replay, I find new things that blow my mind over again. An incredible example of the potential of games as an artistic medium, and one of the few, if not the only game, that truly stands up among the best films and books of the last century as a genuine masterpiece, and important work of art.
When it comes to games, the soundtrack is one of the main things that draws me in and keeps me there. This music in this game is awesome! I loved the music that played on the way to the Island.
I think the true magic of Disco Elysium's writing is that the events of the game doesn't really change, all of your choices(that doesn't lead to a game over) lead to the same solution in the end, there is no real branching path or anything(something story driven games obsess over for years now) Rather its how you perceive the world and in what state of mind your protag is that is important, everyone will have a different view of how things play out and have their own version of Raphael Chadbrosius Costeau. Context is so much more engaging than the actual events
It looked super boring to me at first, but it really does reach into your brain and make you think about things in such an abstract way that the only thing I can compare it to is classical art or philosophy. Even the political side of it makes you question everything you thought you believed.
One of the things Disco Elysium does better than any other game: Letting you fail! In most other CRPGs failing a skill check or choosing the wrong dialogue option closes off a section of the game, but in Disco Elysium, failing will just lead to other content. In fact, some of the most memorable situations in the game arise when you try to do something, fail spectacularly and your failure sets on a new chain of events that are at least, if not more, interesting than what would have happened if you succeeded. The game rewards you for trying, even if that reward is your character making a complete fool of himself, it's funny and memorable long after the game ends.
Sure, failing red checks does usually lead to interesting stuff happening, but the majority of the much more common white checks just lock you out of a path until you manage to retry them succesfully.

i played the final cut about a month ago for the first time and it has become one of my favorite games of all time. it has something to say and is a truly unique and special game.
Is the final cut fully voice acted? As an “elite gamer” I’m embarrassed to say I dropped it early from all the reading 😂 but I always wanted to go back
This game is incredible. The profound experience you get is like nothing else. You laugh at the protagonist, you sympathize with him and you recognize thoughtpatterns and psychological defense mechanisms within yourself. This review nails it. The game is as much about what happens in you as the player as it is about the gameworld. It touches political, and philosophical questions that are very current and through the world of revachol and the protagonist you see our world. This is like nothing before it! It impacted me more than many of the greatest classical books I have read. It is hilariously funny, interesting and unique.
This game recently broke me the first time I played it. I’m so glad you covered this. I was just wondering a couple of days ago what your thoughts is on this game
I don’t remember the interaction, but I remember when it finally clicked, an “Aha!” Moment, of discovering on my own, “Oh, I can’t trust my skills to be objectively accurate in all situations.” I think it was when electrochemistry insisted drugs were the answer or maybe Drama said to say something obviously unwise
Hey Luke. Since you enjoyed Disco Elysium so much, I'd recommend trying Kentucky Route Zero. It's similar to concept though not as brilliant perhaps, but it has some of the best pieces of dialogue I've encountered in such games.
I had decided against trying this game-I was worried it was just gamer guy plays at being existential-but I love good Interactive Fiction, which this sounds like. That is, the sort of experience you generally only get from carefully written text adventures that build the character and how they interact with the story (world), rather than just having a couple of different endings and a ton of stabbing and shooting and “if you kill Bob you don’t get the side quest and he won’t be in the cut scene.” It helps a lot also now to know a bit about the creator’s perspective. You’ve convinced me now-I’ll have to give this a go.
I still get chills I think about the part where you're just buzzing randomly the doorbell at the building complex and then someone you used to know answers the door.
me: now that I've finished this game I can watch some videos about it without spoilers this video: immediately mentions a character I never encountered in my play through
The fact that there are so many side-stories (often with vastly different outcomes in each one) gives this gave arguably the most replay value in any game ever. There are characters you can avoid completely, spend ludicrous amounts of time getting to know them on a deeper level and/or knock them unconscious. You can also inadvertently cause characters' deaths by arresting them and one bad outcome for you will have the side-effect of a young child being abandoned by their only friend in the whole world.

This game is the definition of a grower. My advice is know what to expect going in and be patient, it might just become an all time favourite game of yours like it did for me

Its a great game, but I have to feel its story and ending kinda sucked. For all the choices in the game having the plot be so linear discourages me from wanting to replay it. Was an amazing first playthrough though, very introspective
Had to stop watching when you said 'planetscape torment"
I could not STAND the ending (that I got) of disco Elysium, it felt disconnected and lazy to me.
