That tune near Whirling in rags is a very cheap and dirty trick. The melody is repeatable and easily remembered, and somehow brings a faint feeling of nostalgia upon first hearing. It instantly gets imprinted in memory and brings a lot of associations and memories about the game, that special feeling when you first discovered it, and it makes you want to go back there and feel it again

I had always figured that Dros represented a natural endpoint for Harry as someone who is only capable of looking into the past with not just no hope for the future but no ability to even perceive it, but it never clicked to me that he was full-bore doing the stream of conciousness of your skills out loud. Good observation, well done!

@@wikiales Cheers for the recommendation, I'll forever be hooked on games like disco elysium. They tell a story that no other media can hold a candle to by being an interactive one. Disco Elysium's sad, sombre and yet somehow calming and beautiful world makes you feel like you've lived there. If not a sequel for the crazy bastard that is Harrier Du Bois like you said a spiritual successor set in the same world, hell even a different precinct would be more then enough.
Personally I had a jaw dropping moment when harry was talking about the world and how it was formed etc, to find out that the (planet?) isn't a sphere but a wide ocean of grey mist that a void of oblivion that people transit only to have their greatest and worst memories fade like smoke in the wind is something that I'll always remember. The worlds mysteries is something I'd love to revisit.

The funny part about the political stuff is that it doesn't even really matter - it's all just part of the "clinging to the past" theme. People who focus on the political themes miss the bigger picture: whether you become a fascist or a communist, both cling to a past that will never come back. Just like how Harry clings to his own personal past (with Dora) which will never come back. Almost everyone in Martinaise clings to the past, trying to bring it back despite the chance for that being minuscule. Yet nobody is willing to move on.
Except for Measurehead, who encourages you to leave the past behind and grasp the future. His crude interpretation of scientific racism claims that decadence and nostalgia have led the "ham sandwich race" to lose grip of their former glory and slide into weakness. He claims that the future belongs to those who seize it. And he mocks Harry for being a failure - but at the same time challenges him to leave his addictions behind and climb back out of the abyss he has fallen into.
And then there's the kids creating their "anodic dance music". Techno, a new style of music... a futuristic style of music. A type of dance music to replace the antiquated disco music Harry still clings to. The young teens creating this new style of music represent the idea of breaking with the past and moving forward into the future, while Harry's obsession with disco represents his desperate clinging to the past, a past whose glory days are long over and will never come back.
But by helping the kids create their new anodic dance music, Harry is taking an important step forward. It is at that moment, when he dances to this futuristic sound, that he has his most revealing metaphysical experience. He finally manages to find himself - by letting go of the past and embracing the future.

The communist vision quest is literally all about imagining a better future and holding on to hope. There’s definitely an element of sadness about the past, the deserter being a primary and potent example; but the game provides more nuance to it than just that. Communism is a way to imagine a better future, something that has never been done before. It’s not about romanticizing the past

    • @ShaunCloudSwain

      Spoken like a true Moralist.
Jokes aside, this is a really good analysis and really puts together the "morality" of the game with the reason behind the intense political narrative in the game. Both the notion of 'leaving the past to embrace the future' is explored in Harry as a character study and how the political ideologies fighting each other is represented as this comment nicely points out.
However, I would like to assert that the "discourse" is /equally/ central to the game as the "moral." The reason there is political discourse is that each ideology represents a possibility for the future, and arguably every character wants to make that picture the next reality. There are characters that stand NOT to make that change and therefore suffer and fail to enact - Renee comes to mind; Yosef; The Cryptozoologist but NOT her husband - it's only characters that "win" that gather what their idea of the future is and moves on.
If you let Joyce "win" she sneakily declares she's someone who truly believes an Ultraliberal world is possible - she's making it happen right now because she has the means to. While the Moralintern reigns supreme, surviving Ultraliberals "bet on the right horse." Nothing in Moralism necessarily forbade the actions of or butt heads with anyone under the Ultraliberal banner, of sorts. The situation with the strike is exactly that: Joyce is the one whose finger is on the trigger in this situation; she is who is being struck against - the world is already moving from the past, including the time the Moralintern ruled.
On the other hand, if you let Evrart "win," who right out the gate is shady as all Hell, is ultimately revealed to be... not NOT on the side of the commies/strikers etc., He just has incredibly questionable methods of representing that. He's incredibly blaise about the moral prerogative of a left-leaning ideology like communism; but he's remarkably upfront that he does not want to be representative of any pre-conceived notions of pre-existing ideology. He does not want to be associated with the past and therefore won't be. The past is completely irrelevant - do what must be done, by any means necessary.
Both Joyce and Evrart are EXTREME examples of what happens when you care about the future and only the future. "My vision of the future must happen NOW and therefore all ends justify the means, by then it will be the past and doesn't matter."
I think that feeling of "none of this political stuff matters" comes from the fact that, even though the discourse is "solved" by the end of the game, there doesn't seem to be any clear-cut 'winners' here. The guy whodunnit was an old commie deserter from very far away. Even if you figure that out, you don't feel like you've "won" the case. You don't have a political target to "solve" the battle between the ideologies either. Who the hell wins here? And here is where the game, and most likely everyone in the world, is limited: it doesn't have all the answers and can't answer the question of "who is winning? who should win?" The only 'moral' you can take away is the one that you can either agree or disagree with: "Let go of the past because it's not coming back." And unfortunately, that doesn't 'solve' the political crisis - but it's something. And just 'something' can mean a whole lot in this dumpster fire world.

It's an excellently written adventure game, I just wish the devs weren't champagne socialists; or at least, I wish they didn't try to "subtly" insinuate their own skewed worldview into the game. @@Scaevola9449 Is it portrayed like that? Your character can say it was noble if you want, you don't have to.
The emotion that reaches out to you about how Communism noble, is "gold mouth" Rhetoric. Throughout the game that emotion does not care about what's true or logical, only if it's a flashy, compelling argument to win with. I always think about what actually gives me - the player - agency in any game. For Civilization I think that some metaphysical entity exists that somehow shapes the State of which it is a representation. In Crusader Kings I see my primary figure as a type of spirit that tries to keep the family congruent with the vision of the initial founder of the dynasty and so on.
For Disco Elysium I imagine myself to be one of the inner voices in HDB. One who tries to repair both the broken man and his relation to the broken world as much as possible. Or that part of him that means well, but keeps getting overthrown by other urges.

The guy's not a BBEG, but a rundown, bitter old man, crazily hanging to the past (reflecting Harry), who happened to set in motion the chain of events out of his control (like Gavrilo Princip?). At this point what's done is done. All that's left is to finish the case and move on. He had no grandiose goal or intricate plan, at the end of the day he was just another killer who caused a mess in the world, like many before him, many to come. IMO it works.

    • @DuckieMcduck

Actually it leads up in this way:
      - You can count how many people were involved in lynching and you'll get Ruby's trucker footprints from the day of the crime
      - If you find the footprints and the peephole in the Whirling "secret passage" then you can already deduce there's a new suspect involved that isn't Ruby.
      - When you're trying to get Titus to spill the beans about Ruby, Rhetoric/Logic will beg you to omit the discrepancies (that do in fact exist) so you can pin the blame and get your next "reasonable" lead for the investigation.
      - If that wasn't convincing enough, yet another Volition check outside the Whirling in Rags will "beg your pardon" and tell you the scenery you made up with the weapon being fired atop the Whirling makes is _unreasonable_ but it's "all you got" to make it "reasonable".
      - Passing the check on Visual Calculus will give you 3 locations to clear: The Bay, The Boardwalk, The Islet. But they are increasingly _unreasonable_ odds.
Later the game starts throwing this all at you: You're dealing with people. Things you thought reasonable like a cold jigsaw puzzle are in fact a steaming unreasonable jello, and out of your control. It starts with Ruby's trap: She gives you details that contradict all testimonies, mentions how it would have been obvious someone would have heard the gunfire, ontop of the fact she could have easily killed you and Kim there and then (she's not a killer). At the tribunal, you get a bonus 4th Mercenary with a Nock cannon nobody told you about. This then leads to the 3 intoxicated merc troglodytes not being able to be reasoned with, ending with at least 6 people dying and you getting shot in the hip in the best circumstances.
The one thing is that you cannot check the Islet before the Tribunal even if you have for enough "reasoning" to check it. Kim (who is by all means the compass of reason throughout the whole game) will intercept and say that it in fact was _unreasonable_ to check it. Lilianovich is an _unreasonable_ murderer who had been sporadically sniping people for decades in some craphole town but nobody really noticed, until he finally took out someone who would be _reasonably_ missed.
What I think the game did there is on purpose. It leads you to a superstar climax then it pushes you off a cliff with the reality check that you are just a person dealing with life and reason can fail, you either sink or swim with that fact by trying to get what really happened off Lilianovich: the unreasonable reason. How the game always gave you chance for failure and success regardless of your stats was also a way to fully ingrain this.
