- This particular Spyre is rather worn out which is exactly why you should maintain them from time to time. Yes, I'm using a butterknife. Feel free to ask any questions.

Still some of the best disc brake calipers on the market years on from release. I'd never seen the internals and the design is absolutely brilliant. Elegant in their simplicity and execution. Wonderful stuff.
They have IMO one flaw. The spring that pulls the pads away doesn't allow them to sit dead straight to the disk, which means you have to back them off more than you should need to, and that extra travel is wasted braking effort - You can see the issue at 4m33+... If only they had found another solution, they would indeed be untouchable!

Great video, my spryre had been acting up and this made it so simple to strip down and service the caliper. Thanks for sharing the knowledge
These brakes came with my new gravel bike, i was gonna changed them out with hydraulics straight away, until the lbs said they are great , so i am taking them into the mountains with me. Fantastic video .x

Tremendously useful to me as I serviced a pair of second hand brakes. Note to others: I found the two bolts (1:45 mins in) holding the halfs together very difficult to remove, I resorted to penetrating oil but it may of simply been very tight. I was able to apply a lot of force as they are Torx bolts (T10) and I eventually got them apart. The bearing balls are 2.8mm, I didn't change them this time but I've ordered some of eBay.
Excellent video. I agree with all the other positive comments. I got stuck on how to get the arm off and ended up flushing it out the best I could. Will now go back and folow your process (and be prepared for the loose bearings). I agree, Park Tool have sone great content. Thanks.

Exactly what I needed! Rear brake action is way too hard and making a nice crunching noise when lever is pulled, so the caliper definitely needs some cleaning...

Bump. Thank you! It was so easy to rehab my old spyre with this. It was getting harder and then impossible to get new rotors or pads to fit without rubbing, even full open. I figure the three ball bearings were sticking and not allowing the inner 'ratchet' that controls the piston/calliper spread to fully open and the pads retract. Works like brand new now!!.

I used this video to 1. Give me the confidence, that i could open up those calipers and figure out what was all the grinding. and 2. Actually do it. I watched your vid at least 5 times, and each time i picked up something new and essential to the teardown, rebuild. Thank you very much. I hope you will consider doing more vids. What about campy levers?

My rear brake started to make grinding noises after a single ride through a forest, so I needed to clean it completely. Honestly I'm terribly disappointed by the lack of mud protection.

I have a pair on my gravel. Probably the best mechanical disc brakes on the market. But honestly, I'm a little disappointed with the power. I changed the cable housing for compressionless hoping for an improvement (not yet tested). But now that I see how long it takes to service, given how efficient these brakes are, I'm starting to miss the hydraulics with their slimy, messy bleeding procedure. Although the design looks thoughtful and clever, I think there is room for improvement. Steel is rigid but not incompressible unlike DOT fluid. Also, there can be a lot of friction losses inside the caliper...🤔
Agreed, they are far from perfect but still good for the price. Please share your experience after you've tried compressionless, I've thought of it too. I also hope to HY/RD sometime.
@@Elchupanibria I just did a quick lap with my gravel. The compressionless housing gives a much better result. As with the standard one, no real bite at the start of the lever stroke, but, mid-stroke, the power kicks in and increases. The brakes now seem sufficient for an emergency braking. This was not the case before because, beyond half of the stroke, the power did not increase any more and stayed weak. So compressionless seems to be a real improvement, to be put into perspective because the factory housing was "cut with a wood saw". A proper cut is as important as the housing axial stiffness.
That said, the price of the TRP mechanical brake is correct compared to what is offered on the market. But given the power delivered and the maintenance which is not easy, I think that TRP should make an effort to facilitate the service. For example, a small port could be added to lubricate internal components directly throughout the caliper body without disassembly. Look at the size of the thrust bearing balls at #2:13, I'm a little skeptical of the durability of this part and think a roller thrust bearing would have been a much better choice (see the Paul Klemper brake design). We will see with time...

I thought about it, but most bike repairs are covered quite extensively on the ParkTools channel. I'm just a regular bike owner who couldn't find a specific video for my own problem and decided to make one. But if you want something specific I could try.

Really cool and informative video...thanks! I'm curious...how well do these brakes hold up when used for off road/CX riding? Do they clean out well? How often should they be cleaned? And is it possible to effectively spray some Brunox into the working parts to keep the system in optimal condition? A lot of question I know but before I buy a set I would like more info.

How can you disassemble thses 2 Torx screws that connect 2 caliper? I fonund my trp torx screws seem to be filled with High strength screw glue. I cannont disassemble and even slip my screws...
Yeah, first time you might need a long angled key. A bit of WD-40 spray locally could help, but be sure not to get any on the pads.

Any idea how often you do this, the Spyre is a road bike brake. Let‘s say after how many kilometers in normal asfalt/tarmack road conditions with some rainy weather from time to time would be a good km intervall for this service. 10.000km?
I can’t get the 2 bolts holding the main body together to move, any ideas?
WD-40 and a longer L-wrench should do it
@@Elchupanibria I also have this problem. I have tried heating it as well. I got the bike used (its' about 5 years old), and it's a CX, so is it possible it's just a lost cause and too stuck?
@@Brave_English I couldn't remove any whilst hand-held either. Try a vice, or mount back on to the bike? I couldn't run my workshop without a long lever, not with my weedy hands and arms! :)

my spyres are still pretty new, on one side the caliper adjustment doesnt really work though. do you have any tips? id rather not take it fully apart :D
Might just need a bigger force applied, they tend to get stuck. Maybe try to wash off the dirt with water spray beforehand.

this is brilliant - thanks so much. However I am stuck at 1:02 - I cant get that little hex bolt out - they are seized on both sides - I have tried wd40 & plusgas - soaked overnite - still wont shirt, and starting to distort the head if I pressure too much. Any suggestions short of throwing it away? All the best
Oh, that's a tough one. I'd probably try skipping that step and continuing the process up to 1:54 and then try to loosen the thread with careful motions of the two halves, maybe try a little hammer action here and there. Try some other wrenches, instrumental steel can hugely vary in quality.
I struggled removing all the bolts on mine until I popped it in a vice (strategically and gently!) and used a long lever tool to be super gentle, but with purchase. If you don't have a vice, you could mount it back on the bike to get more purchase? Good luck! 🤞🏻

I just bought a second-hand pair. The pads in one of them are not parallel. Looking from below the pads are like in V letter position, that is, the corners of edge of the pads you can touch when they are placed in are closer in one corner and more distanced in the other corner.
My question is, could this be solved by disassembling and reassembling them?
I'm not sure, are those new pads or worn out from the previous owner?
@@Elchupanibria it is the pistons that push the pads which are not parallel
@@Elchupanibria pads are equally worn out in both calipers, but only one caliper has this issue, so pads are not the problem, I suspect
@@아우빠 Yeah, I'd try disassembling it, at least it will be easier to tell where the problem is.
Kinda basic question but what grease do you use for the bearings?
Quick answer: not the best one. I used lithium because I couldn't find anything better that day, but combined with water it could be corrosive. Hydrophobic heat resistant calcium and silica based greases are a way to go. Personally I'm planning on buying a tube of Park Tools HPG-1 because I trust the brand and it will probably last me a lifetime.
Does anyone know what the bearing size is? Mine feel a bit crunchy after cleaning and greasing everything. I think the three bearings in each side of the caliper are crusty beyond hope, and some fresh ones might help.
