The TOWER OF BABEL Was About More Than Just Language

  • In the Old Testament, we have the concept of Cosmic Geography. There's this sense; well, if this is the way it is, then I can only be rightly related to the real God, the true God, Yahweh, if I'm in his land, so when I'm outside the land, that's dangerous. It's dangerous territory because it's under the dominion of some other god. And this worldview that emerges from Deuteronomy 32 is reflected in a number of passages; when Naaman comes to Israel to speak with the Prophet, to be cured of leprosy. And he is cured. And he says, "Now I know that Yahweh is the God of all gods, and I will never worship and other." He's not staying in Israel. He's never going to read Torah. He's never going to observe the Sabbath. He's not going to get circumcised. Okay, but his theology consists of one point, that is the ultimate point. Who is the true God. So what is he asked the Prophet for? Dirt! Check it out!

Michael Heiser's lessons often remind of how fulfilled a life-long orthodox Jew must feel and know when they accept Jesus Christ. They have a knowledge of the regional culture , tradition , feasts and geography regarding the old testament in ways that most of us gentiles simply can not know. When saved Jewish people read the Bible , they see and understand things that I need Michael's explanation for since I just don't have the background. It does make me appreciate his teachings so very much....it makes Bible reading all the more awesome...thanks for what you help us to see , Dr. Heiser !!

I'm in total agreement with you. This is why when I come across Jews who come into The Way,(The Gospel/Good News/ The intended trajectory for Jews) I feel so overjoyed truly! It is what God intended. This is their heritage/ birthright but they missed the mark.

Dr. Heiser has made history truly come alive for me. I always felt skeptical, when folks would say the bible was the greatest story ever told. I didn't agree with that and knew it was important, but by no means was this book the greatest story ever told. Since I have read Dr. Heiser, Brian Godawa's series of books and others, the bible for real, is the greatest story ever told. It's really got everything, anyone could want! I'm fascinated by the overt supernatural history of man and God. The truth really is far more fascinating and wondrous, than the stale facsimiles we've been fed as "truth" for thousands of years.
It's honestly changed my life and i'm closer to Yahweh than ever before.

I do as well. I love finding and learning more about our Heavenly Father.
Sometimes I wonder that I have to be very careful with Discernment, of which, me in and of myself have none, being a man, yet with God all things are possible.
While the pursuit of the Things of God are an Honor, never let us be led astray from The Simplicity That is The Gospel of Jesus Christ, that Faith and Charity, Love and Compassion, are all founded.
So much new/old hidden knowledge is being brought forth for any to see plainly enough, but I tend to be cautious at my best, in my hunger for Knowledge I have been recklessly heading into areas that, after close inspection, are well crafted, well misleading at it's worst.
I have to be humbled that without the Holy Spirit, I can be mislead by soothsayers.
I am not saying this is the case here.
I am saying that so much information has been made available, and I am seeing that some of it is being used to confuse, to attempt to bind us to a belief or law that is Tradition. I guess what I am trying to say is that many things being"brought to Light are being done so by the very beings who have occulted it in the first place, and that, me, a man who sometimes has itchy ears can be led far astray if I'm not grounded in the Simplicity of the 2 Great Commandments, The Truth that is The Gospel of Christ.
Thanks for reading my rant, I am sorry I am bad with words.
Take care and let no man deceive you. (Again, no accusation being made about this particular thing, I have only recently heard much of M. H.'s stuff, and have no view one way or the other here)

I grew up in a heavily legalistic church, then I went into pentecostalism from there to the faith movement, and then Grace and faith movement, I got born again in 1975, and I was never taught correctly the whole council of God in any of those years. Now I find Mike Heiser and more things fit into place ... WHY, WHY, WHY can't we be taught these things in our local church instead of only the darkened thoughts of a denominational mindset, and if don't want that mindset then we have to walk alone as we are considered back sliden, or worse a blasphemer, and heretic? This type of teaching should be taught in bible schools and the local body of believers. Thank you Michael for teaching this stuff.

Good job, sis! You managed to obtain enough Bible knowledge so when Heiser came along, you would understand what he was talking about! I've always had to feed myself. And still do. Once it was books...and later You Tube with the invention of the Internet. It's important to be a part of a local church body to love and serve others and even pass on what you have learned from Heiser. No one pastor can have all the answers and pastors seldom have time to study themselves due to fulfilling the burdens of the congregation, attending meetings, and developing programs, weddings, funerals and building repairs or remodels. Besides, I think a lot of pastors cater to the lowest common denominator. They know members don't attend every Sunday, pews are filled with un-believers, new believers and marginal Christians, so the focus is on the Gospel over and over and over. Very little to challenge the Christian who wants to grow...but that's the purpose of offering weekday Bible Studies on different topics. But I do agree with you...but remember, it's the Holy Spirit teaching you, and what He opens you to receive is precious!

The Gospel was going forth and having tremendous impact. During the age of exploration, Christians saw opportunity to engage with other cultures. The Gospel really did reach into the deepest darkest jungles. America came into existence. There was a time prior to Communism when China was open to the Gospel (SEE Hudson Taylor) as was Russia. Inventions such as the printing press, air travel and the Internet has been used of God to make Himself known. But God's messengers still go into very dangerous territory and many have been killed.

One reference one should consider, when asking why Naaman took back load of earth/dirt from Israel with him is found in Exodus 20:24: "An altar of earth you shall make for me and sacrifice on it your burnt offerings and your peace offerings, your sheep and your oxen." This was one way to confess a clear break from idolatry and idol altars -- which Naaman wanted to do. Now where he heard of this practice -- whether from the Israeli servant girl in his household -- or possibly from Elisha, after he heard Naaman's resolve to no longer sacrifice to idols, is not mentioned.

You have continued my further appreciation of thinking outside the typical theological explanation of the many passages in the Bible that needed a deeper and truthful understanding of what the ancient writers fully intended the readers to grasp. There were giants in the world and there are unseen, supernatural realms that surround us, each and every hour of every day. Thank you Dr. Heiser for your boldness in explaining the mysteries of passages that pastors will not address.

Made up Stories about a fictional prophet who performed "miracles" that every single magician in the Middle East, 2,000 years ago, could perform without even breaking a sweat .. "jesus's" "miracles" are MAGIC TRICKS .. there were THOUSANDS of Jews roaming around, 2,000 years ago, claiming to be "god" or the "messiah", or, if they spoke greek or aramaic - "christ" - and ALL of them were giving speeches and performing miracles and telling people to "follow them" .. the entire "christian" cult was invented by S/Paul in the 50s -- and then 30 or 40 years later a bunch of stories started appearing about some dude named "jesus" who was one of these "miracle workers" from 70 years ago claiming to be "christ" .. and then 100 to 200 years later, a bunch of child-raping Cardinals decided to turn it into a religion and started creating "beliefs" about a "man-turned-god" that don't exist anywhere in any of the so called "christ" teachings .. read the original texts -- jesus is NEVER called "god" .. jesus is NEVER born of a "virgin" .. the OLDEST documents NEVER call "jesus" "god" or "messiah" or "christ" -- he was a prophet, born of a human mother, born of human father, with OLDER brothers and sisters -- he wasn't even "twelve" when the his parents "forgot" him in the temple - the "twelve" refers to the number of years he'd been studying the Torah at the Temple, which is exactly how training to be priest existed 2,000 years ago - which starts at age 12, which means he was TWENTY FOUR when his parents went back to find him talking to the priests in the Temple -- he wasn't 12, he was 24, he was "twelve years old" as Temple Student .. it's all bullshit that the baby-raping Cardinals rewrote and manipulated to create a bullshit story .. the JEWS rejected Jesus's claims because they DO NOT MATCH the ORIGINAL Jewish Text -- the claims in the New Testament that "jesus" somehow magically fulfills the "promise of the Messiah" have been modified, textually, to fit the New testament "Jesus Claims" - when you compare them to the OLD TESTAMENT texts , the ones that the New Testament refers to, THEY DO NOT MATCH -- the New Testament Claims are NOT Factual and not accurate to the Old Testament prophesies .. this has proven, beyond all shadow of a doubt .. You're worshipping a FAIRY TALE ..

I love the fact that, being in Christ, I can no longer set my feet on soil that is not in His dominion. The earth is the Lord's, and the fullness thereof. If I sin, I step out in a wilderness, and can get my fanny kicked royally. (His people do perish, to varying degrees, for lack of knowledge.) But, all I do is speak to the Rock that I struck 31years ago, and I am back inside! Today is the day of salvation! Today is the day of atonement!

Then everywhere, the citizens, obliged to defend themselves against the world minority of revolutionaries, will exterminate those destroyers of civilization, and the multitude, disillusioned with Christianity, whose deistic spirits will from that moment be without compass or direction, anxious for an ideal, but without knowing where to render its adoration, will receive the true light through the universal manifestation of the pure doctrine of Lucifer, brought finally out in the public view.

Jesus took your punishment for your sins so that you could be clothed in His righteousness and be presented to the Father as a righteous person. Throughout all of Scripture... God meets us where we are at. God meets us in our false perspectives (relative reality/s), which shows up over and over in both the OT and NT. What this leaves out is the covenantal aspect. When Jesus said, "I go to prepare a place for you that where I am, you may be also," that was the third instance of that theme in scripture. The first time was when God prepared Eden and created his first covenant people, Adam and Eve, to dwell there with him in fellowship and worship. The second was when he prepared the Promised Land and created his second covenant people, Israel, to dwell there with him, though he was secluded in the holy of holies there. God was always known to be Lord of everywhere. But the sacred ground was the place where he dwelt with his covenant people in fellowship. The desert was the place where his face did not shine, where his benefits were not fully bestowed. This is why Jesus was tempted in the wilderness.

I like to think of altars as an ancient form of what we may now call a "barbecue" in the West, but done in a more primitive manner. I know it's a very different thing, but meat can be cooked on charcoal, or over open flame. If an offering is to be eaten, then the meat would be consumed by those that have offered it to God. If not, then the offering may be wholly consumed by fire.

We will be placed over the nations, currently under the dominion of the fallen sons of God, displacing them in that role, sharing messianic rule with Jesus, our brother (Heb 2:5-18; Rev 2:26-28; Rev 3:21). In so doing, we will “judge angels,” ruling over them in terms of Old Testament divine council hierarchical terminology (1 Cor 6:3; John 1:12). The end result is not that glorified believers become angels. Rather, we are fully grafted into the glorious family council of God. Our “already” status in that regard becomes full reality at death. We join the heavenly children of God in a blended divine family and actually outrank angels in the new global Eden.

Question about the idea of wilderness and cosmic geography: Does the wilderness in this context represent land outside the Deut 32 allotments, not belonging to a god of a 'nation,' hence it was the domain of minor deities and demons etc? This would seem to be consistent with the idea in many ancient cultures that liminal spaces belong to dangerous spirits.

16 For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him:
17 And he is before all things, and by him all things consist.
18 And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence.
19 For it pleased the Father that in him should all fulness dwell”

I have been convinced for decades of the idea of the ancients firmly believing in regional gods. It is the only way that I could reconcile the part in Exodus where Moses asks of the burning bush "who shall I say has sent me?" It's clear that Moses didn't, at first, understand that the God of his forefathers could operate so far outside of his assumed territory.
God later removes all doubt when he tells Moses in Ex 6:3 " I appeared to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob as El Shaddai, but by My name, YHWH, I did not make Myself known to them."
When considered in the light of the fallacy of regional gods Exodus 6:6-8 are very, very powerful statements from our God

Dagon was worshipping the Ark. We serve in either of two ways, submission or works. This is why Dagon was seen in (2) different states... one prostrate (obedience), and the other with his facilities to work broken off (rebellion).
The 'law' is a blessing and a curse and cannot be 'broken' - it merely 'breaks' one who is rebellious. (Romans 2:12-14)

I love this term; Cosmic Geography. When I read of Naaman's request to Elisha, I went to a drawer of old trinkets in my room and found a little vial of dirt from Canaan that someone had once given me as a gift. I took three long strings of floss and tied it around my neck. I now have Canaanite dirt with me wherever I go, no matter what I do, and am comforted by the idea that it's there even as I write this. I'm moved by such passages from the Psalm 141; "May my prayers be as the incense and the sacrifices." It must be true that YHWH-Almighty, the god of Israel and the Israelites, is so intimately connected with the land of Canaan itself, so if I can't be there right now in person, heck I may as well take the land with me :- ) .

@@flutep2069 Shalom to you! Thank you for taking time to try to shed some light on this, may YHWH-bless-you. But I don't think you and I have the same lord. I worship YHWH-Almighty, and I try to be dedicated to him with my every breath. And in the ancient texts of my forefathers, it is clear that he is uniquely connected to the very soil of the Land of Canaan itself, the land of his people, a people of whom I am fated to be a part. I am not a superstitious person; I only read through the ancient prophecies, oracles, and teachings with an open heart and a yearning to live according to his will, and am quick to change my ways when I come across something which makes me think I am in error. When my ancestors were exiled from home, they cried out in despair; "How can we sing songs of YHWH on alien soil???" I worry that myself, and can only confirm from such lamentations, as well as Elisha's agreement with Naaman and other texts, that having this soil with me wherever I go goes a long way.

I understand the idea that there are nations led by demons, but to say all nations are led by demons is contrary to scripture. There is even an immoral nation mentioned in the bible that wasn't so immoral that God would allow the Israelites to attack them. People miss the fact that Rev.20:3 is talking about this. It said Satan is bound that he should deceive the nations no longer. When Christ offered himself as the perfect sacrifice he regained the dominion that Adam lost. He exercises that dominion over the world by the spread of his kingdom in the hearts of men by belief in the gospel. When Satan tempted Christ in the wilderness he told Christ he would give him all the kingdoms of the earth if Christ would bow down and worship him. Christ could have had dominion without going to the cross but that wasn’t the Father’s will. Without the cross no one could be saved.
