  • I tested 6 of the top fixed blade broad heads, all in 125 gr, by shooting them into a 16 gauge steel plate: Montec G5, Allen, Trophy Taker A-TAC, Muzzy Trocar, QAD Exodus, and Bishop Holy Trinity.

      Thanks Andrew. I have been intrigued by those, but there are some things that don't pass my "research test" enough to buy them. If they gave me some to test, I'd be happy to :)

      Well, I can't test every head in every test :) This was one of my first tests a long time ago and it was with all the heads I had on hand. How many different heads do you have on hand? This testing gets really pricey! Since then I've done vids on the Wicked Trick and I'm about to post one on the Grizz Trick.

    Thanks for the video, it's a hard one choosing what broadheads to use and I like the last one you used as it can be used again so nice job, but the Walmart arnt to bad either as it's so cheap and better to loose $2 than $10 so thanks again.

      Yep. Thanks for sharing that Damian. On a lot of my other vids, I also test for accuracy. That's where the cheaper ones don't do very well.

      @@LuskArcheryAdventures Yes I find the blades can be a tad loose and they will flap when flying so I Spin test than glue them in :) But thanks again.

    Cool test. You should check out the Magnus Blackhornets.. They are fantastic and almost indestructible. I have a couple videos shooting the Blackhornets through a lid for a steel drum and it took 5 shots before the tip chipped and the feral never did bend.

      SoloCamXT Outdoors I agree with you, I bought several broadheads this year, and besides the vpa I loved (2 blade), the black hornet, exodus and wac'em forged mecanics, were the ones I liked the most.

    lusk, please compare the bishop with the VPA, they are very similar !!! many here are awaiting this test, and the most fair would be to compare with them because they are similar and of similar steel. it will be interesting. thanks

    • @LuskArcheryAdventures
      @LuskArcheryAdventures  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for commenting. The VPAs are great heads. One of the designers of the VPA helped design to Bishop Holy Trinity. But honestly, the Bishop is in a different league. There is really no comparison in the S7 Tool Steel and the Steel that VPA uses; the S7 is about 3 times more resistant to impact. Also, the Holy Trinity is shorter, thicker, and has more support in the tip. The shorter design decreases surface area and allows it to fly better. The thickness and extra support in the tip allows the Bishop to be a more durable design. The less expensive Bishop Bridgeport model is made of 41L40 Tool Steel that is closer to what the VPA uses, but is still of a superior composition/hardening. That combined with the design modifications also make it a stronger, better flying head.

    Lusk Archery Adventures - What is your favorite 'blue collar priced' fixed blade that can be re-sharpened?

    • @LuskArcheryAdventures
      @LuskArcheryAdventures  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for watching Chris. No doubt it is the Exodus. I resharpen those heads all the time. The blades are .040, which is one of the very thickest replaceable blades on the market. So you can replace them if they're really bad, or just sharpen them up.

    I would like to see how the Valkyrie broadheads with the center pin system do against the Bishop Holy Trinity.

    • @LuskArcheryAdventures
      @LuskArcheryAdventures  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good question. I have not tested them yet. I know they are also made of S7. However, I really don't like such an elongated head and gradual angle. It may help for a bit of penetration, but will not breach bone as effectively, because such a gradual angle produces less torque. Still, I'm sure it is a great head. Thanks for watching and commenting Zac!

    It looks like the A-TAC Broadhead actually penetrated the steel where all of the others bounced off.

    • @LuskArcheryAdventures
      @LuskArcheryAdventures  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for watching Colby. The A-TAC is the only one of these heads that has a two blade cut on contact tip; thus it will penetrate a bit more readily. But others cut through the plate as well.

    Is anyone else impressed by the cheap Allen walmart head? Not bad at all. If those group well, I'd seriously consider them for deer. What's the cutting diameter? Every time an arrow is loosed on an animal I don't expect to get the arrow back or at least not get it back in a reusable condition, that's why super expensive broadheads are just stupid in my book.

    • @LuskArcheryAdventures
      @LuskArcheryAdventures  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I wasn't impressed with the Allen at all. Some of them didn't even spin true out of the box. I have shot a deer and a coyote with them before, and they didn't penetrate well.

  • @derekverville1125
    @derekverville1125 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I wish you'd let the arrow rest before you ended the clip of the shot, you can't tell penetration or anything with how short the clip is. Looks to me like the G5 won, which only makes sense, it's the best head in that line up.

    • @LuskArcheryAdventures
      @LuskArcheryAdventures  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for watching and commenting Derek. Sorry about that. I'll keep that in mind next time. The Montec penetrated relatively well, but experienced way more damage than other heads. It certainly is not the best head in that line up :)

    • @derekverville1125
      @derekverville1125 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Everyone has their opinions!

    • @LuskArcheryAdventures
      @LuskArcheryAdventures  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Very true, Derek. And Montecs certainly are good heads. But they do use relatively inferior steel that is metal injected molded, and they have a relatively long total length, which causes them to fly a bit less forgiving than many other shorter heads. So, factually, they are neither the strongest nor the best flying. But if they're your favorite, then keep on using them. I'm sure they'll get the job done more times than not. Thanks again for watching and commenting. I do appreciate it.

    • @derekverville1125
      @derekverville1125 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@LuskArcheryAdventures Im just a fan of the penetration and how well they hold an edge. Id rather have a blade bend than get chopped up or broken like what has happened to me with almost everything else. Also, with a 1 piece construction there is way less room for error in passing. Ive found my arrows bladeless shooting rage after a pass through and Ive had other multipiece blades blow apart on impact or in passing. Im very tried and true and so far the G5 has shown the test of time and durability for me. But, just like everything else, people all have their favorite. Im not saying there isnt any other good broadhead on the market but when it comes to hunting a lot can go wrong, so when I get that shot off I want minimal margin for error, so I personally stick to 1 piece solid broadheads. Keep the tests coming though, it shows a lot!

    • @LuskArcheryAdventures
      @LuskArcheryAdventures  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for watching Bill. I think you're missing the point of the testing though. I'm comparing broadhead performance against a consistent medium. It doesn't mean that any of the heads will do poorly on an animal, it just means that some are more durable than others. So if you had to choose between a head that could hold up to steel plate versus one that could not--all other things equal--wouldn't you choose the one that could hold up to it? Any reasonable person would. My testing has evolved a lot from this super early vid I made; check out my more recent testing protocol on my channel to see it all. Again, my goal is just to provide consistent data points for comparative purposes.

    You asked...?
    "what better way is there to test these heads?"
    Answer...in real life hunting situations with real live deer. (or other big game)
    Seriously Mr. Lusk, your tests are silly. Just silly.
    Stability in flight, sharpness, cutting surface, accuracy, width, and MOST important to any blue collar worker...COST!!!
    (at least after all else being equal)
    Magnus heads are Excellent in all departments unless your target range is made up of concrete blocks or steel plates.

    Your tests are irrelevant.

    • @LuskArcheryAdventures
      @LuskArcheryAdventures  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Well, thanks for watching...but I have to disagree. I've had heads actually get bent up more by hitting heavy bone than by hitting steel. Why not test them on a bunch of different mediums to see how they hold up? I also shoot lots of animals and test them in that fashion as well. Additionally, I do have many other mediums that I test them on. But what I do find "irrelevant" is testing them into meat and bone. There is no comparative value to such tests. Bone and tissue densities vary so much, as do the geometry of those bones and tissues. One head may do great on one shot and then smash apart on the next. But with a consistent medium, there is much more value in comparing different heads.

      How do the qad and the bishop compare side-by-side at extended ranges like 60 70 and 80 yards? I am wondering if they are equally quiet beings they have no air channels in the blades like most fixed blades I have had too many animals hear a whistling Broadhead coming and move before the arrow gets there so that is a big concern for me ,and does the bishop tend to plane more because the blades are solid metal?
