    I have bounced back and forth between Fuji and Canon and my last go to camera was the 1Dxii for the amazing photos and video it took. Moved over to the XT3 system and while I LOVED how small and compact it was and still shot great video... I was yenning for more megapixels in the stills department. I'm primarily a photographer and then shoot motion second so while looking at the R5 I choose the R5C as a more long term future proof camera. It's deff has some bulk to it though it's no comparison between the Canon and Fuji when It comes to size... I just LOVE the images that come out of the Canon. The AF is great, the resolution is perfect and when I want to flic to video It's really simple. I like the added "cinema" features as the C has for exposure ect and the 4k looks so good. I mainly use it for family travel and documentary stuff for vacations ect and to me it's a great hybrid. I REALY REALY wish Canon would listen and just give us CLOG2 in the 4K mode at least. I KNOW when you shoot 8k Raw you are getting the CLOG 2 but 4k would be ideal. IT would be even more amazing if they enabled 4k RAW somehow to further future proof the camera.
    I use the FXLION NANO ONE v-mount battery 50wh battery with the new Small Rig V-Mount battery plate and it works perfectly for a small compact set up. It has a QD mount so I can remove it in 2 seconds If I want to go smaller footprint. The battery lasts very long and charges the camera too when powered off.

    Good review! R5C owner. I've learned to manage the power issue. Sometimes it just means 2 batteries in my pocket, other times it's a larger camera build. The Tascam XLR box is a joke. Canon, sell us a compact miniXLR smartshoe box! AF using an EF adapter does not hold up to modern competitors. That's a shame, I was hoping it would. RF glass does fix this (looking forward to trying the new RF 24-105 2.8 w/ servo.) RF-EF adapter with ND is really nice to have, but could be better, I wish they didn't make the filter housing/control dial so cheaply. It's easy to bump accidentally. Usually I tape it in place.
    Recently I've started playing with the S35 RAW format. It's pretty great! A lower resolution FF RAW file would be nice, but I could see how that would introduce different issues.
    I'm a 1Dx owner, but oddly enough the C70 doesn't interest me much. I've used it a few times. It does have lots of benefits!
    Would like to see Canon make a stills camera to challenge A7c. And a Cinema-Cube like "C50" to compete with RED Komodo.

    Anyone rigging this camera for video will never use it to take photos in the same space. The rig is the key. I have it as well as the C70. The R5c was purchased because of the size for smaller gigs. I can't see anyone using this camera with a rig. I use it with an Anton Bauer battery that has a quick-release hookup to sit the R5c on top of.

  • @spelunkerd
    @spelunkerd ปีที่แล้ว +2

    My thoughts exactly. It raises the question regarding why the R5C needs so much power. Of course, it has bigger challenges laid out with an enormous sensor that is collecting and processing data even when not recording and even when not shooting at the highest resolution. So, we shouldn't be surprised that it requires significantly more energy than competitors who aren't playing in the same 8K field. But when not recording, it seems possible that a software update might find a more efficient pathway to achieve the same recording goals....

    I also have the C70 and the R5C and probably use the C70 more although I'm often doing a 2-camera setup so I use both. The problem is that the image that comes out of the R5C is insanely awesome. Whenever I'm editing a job, I always prefer the R5C image. I've been trying to figure out why. I think it's because I often shoot at f3.5-f4 and the rolloff from soft to sharp is so amazing. I also think I might prefer working with CLOG3 when properly exposed. Sometimes that CLOG2 curve has too much latitude in the shadows and I find myself needing to use a custom contrast curve even though I don't use a really contrasty image. The other "problem" is that the C70, as a tool, is incredible. No other camera is as nimble as that camera so to compare anything else to it, is just disappointing. Most video cameras need to be rigged up to some degree. One other thing for anyone who really wants the autofocus to be awesome is that you need to use RF glass. It's just way better for autofocus. The sigma glass or even EF glass just doesn't play as well with the autofocus. Really, though, just get good at manual focus - that's the best solution. One last random thought is that I don't find the photography image or the video image to be the same as the R5. I know they say it's the same sensor but it doesn't seem like it. Maybe the software is a bit different.

      @@brandnewextragood Hi, I own a R5 and a C100mk ii. I shoot wildlife and landscapes. I want to step up my video game but I'm not really looking for that cinematic look, more sharp crisp detail. I like the form factor of the C70 way more for video. Do you think the C70 would give me satisfactory results, and does it have a certain codec and frame rate that would work best for wildlife?? Thanks, Dennis

    • @brandnewextragood
      @brandnewextragood  ปีที่แล้ว

      I think the C70 could be a great choice for wildlife because it has a Super 35 sensor. You’ll be able to get more reach for less money spent on lenses.

    From what I'm gathering, it seems like it's the cinema OS that is causing the problems. I don't think the cinema OS is optimized for the the R5 hardware. The OS is calling for more power than necessary since it's used on bigger, hungrier cameras. But you would think that the Cinema and the Photo sides of the business would be able to come up with a solution.

    • @brandnewextragood

    All good stuff. I use it handheld, with the battery grip and smallrig cage (which I find comfortable, even for photos), and also on the gimbal. But I agree, even with the latest firmware, if I have a job where both photo and video are important, and not just a 'can you please throw in some snaps,' then it's a two-cam job.

      The difference in useable DR between the two seems fairly negligible. I've been following Gerald Undone's suggestion of using the internal NR and, shot for shot, I don't really feel a difference. I *do* feel the C70 has a softer highlight roll-off, though, and it's there that I find myself wishing Canon would put that image sensor in an even more compact body. Or just one that has two tripod mounting points and a hot shoe that doesn't loosen after normal usage. :P

    In the announcement video with Ollie Kensington, Ollie mentioned why clog2 wouldn’t increase the dynamic range of the R5C, and also why it would introduce a lot more noise; thus why it was never - and will never - be included. Clog3 is the much better way of shooting log with the R5C, and it amazes me how this is still a gripe two years later, when it was mentioned on Day One. Great video though. I have 3xC70s and always consider the R5C as the great gimbal camera that I don’t have (yet), not sure if I will ever own it, as that battery life is a crippler, but it’s certainly got its pros too. Love your lighting setup. 👍

    • @brandnewextragood
      @brandnewextragood  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Very interesting, I never knew that about the R5C. Makes total sense, though. Agree that CLog3 is a great way to shoot log on this camera and it has served me very well so far.

    • @cmckenna
      @cmckenna ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@brandnewextragood yeah, it seems like something Canon should have explained more, but only Ollie has given an explanation - as far as I'm aware - over the years, and he's a great professional colorist and Canon ambassador, so I know what he says will be true.
      In the announcement video, Ollie actually dissed the competition, saying the likes of Sony would have given us their equivalent of clog2 with the R5C, only for users to realise afterwards that it's unusable and useless. I just wish Canon would explain more behind their decisions; their transparency would potentially lead to more users' trust, rather than the Canon Cripple Hammer rhetoric, which goes around after most of their cameras being released.
      Glad it's served you well though, and on the C70 too, which I was surprised to hear in your video. I am an absolutely huge fan of clog2, but then I mostly shoot weddings these days, so the added dynamic range in an uncontrollable environment is fantastic. Rewind to my corporate years, and 12 stops of dynamic range was more than enough, so a C70/R5C in clog3 is even more than more than enough. 😂 Keep up the good work, and all the best with your channel.

    Do you think the image of C70 is more filmic than R5c's image ? I don't know if it's me or the C70 just looks more organic while the r5c is good, It looks kinda like the R5 video which looks digital. Also, with your current setup at 6:14, does your mic pick up autofocus sounds from the lens ? Also, on the R5 c, is clog -3 quite noisy like the R5 in the shadows ? Thanks again!

    • @brandnewextragood
      @brandnewextragood  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I’ve heard people say the C70 looks more “filmic” than the R5C, but I think that’s kind of an ambiguous term that’s hard to quantify. I think it’s fair to say the C70’s image is softer than the R5/R5C by virtue of its lower resolution, and maybe that’s what people are picking up on.

  • @PizzlesTechTime
    @PizzlesTechTime ปีที่แล้ว

    The autofocus on the R5C in video was a big problem for me until I updated the firmware on the lens and body. After updating I simply lowered response and speed to -1. I find myself having no issues now. However throw a different cheaper lens on there and autofocus is a different story. The 50 mil 1.8 RS Mount Canon lens struggles to focus close up objects and takes a longer time.

We ALWAYS had 24 or of them on us strapped like a bandolier or holster on our legs and chests! Even with the smaller Canon batteries you should ALWAYS carry a full 12 hour day's worth which is 24 of the LP Batteries! For the amount of money you are spending on lenses and camera gear, NOT SPENDING the money on enough batteries and chargers IS the definition of INSANE!
