Absolutely on point! R5C is a Netflix-approved hybrid camera, capable of shooting astounding 8K RAW footage at 60fps-it's a long-term investment, easily lasting a decade. Snagged four pristine EF prime lenses (24, 50, 85, 125) for under $2100-a steal for incredible image quality! Enhancing it further with an adapter with ND filter, and external battery has been fantastic (I don't take the adapter off). The seamless compatibility with my DJI RS 3 Pro just elevates the entire experience. Personally, I use the Nitze PA28M-AK top handle, the QR lock on it is so easy to use and allows me to quickly take it on and off. R5C gives so many options that I decided to use it all the time. Edit: If anyone strugles with 8K, at Super35 crop mode you can shot 6K at 60fps RAW :)
Yep, you get it. This thing is a workhorse. I also love shooting the super35 6k raw! For awhile I was doing that to match up with the 6k raw file from my Komodo. Eventually I just went all the way ‘down’ to the 4k because it still looked so great.

@@oisinforde1294 Sorry, I believe the issue you're describing is a firmware issue with the RS3 Pro that has not been updated still. If you do an internet search you'll find that R5C users have been complaining about this for some time. No solution that I'm aware of right now.
Love these sort of videos from ACTUAL producers, so many great points. We're using equipment that's light years ahead of what was available 10 years ago and the R5c does what a cinema AND professional camera can do in one body. Grateful for my R5c even though its got quirks.
It's a ridiculously good camera. The number one thing it's doing for me right now is generating income on BOTH photo AND video projects. I can't say that about too many equipment purchases.

Yep!! I shoot my R5C and Komodo together on almost every single job. Honestly, any modern digital cinema camera nowadays should be able to match up with any other with just a little bit of work. But for some reason I do think the RED and Canon systems pair better together than most.
I have moved more towards video but have been using the R5C for two years and absolutely love it still. Doing RAW photos to doing RAW videos was so useful for me even with the rig I’ve made. I’m getting an FX3 and a FX30 soon to have my home setup be stationary for me to bring my R5C out more often while that low-light and shadow detail from the FX3 and FX30 take over home studio work! Gimbal, Cine Tripod or even handheld with the R5C has been beautiful! The only issue was the battery and the weight of rigging it out but with a rat bag or a good set of legs and arms, still my favorite camera to shoot with
That’s a really interesting solution, going with Sony at home vs taking the R5C out. I’m curious why you’re dividing up systems rather than staying all Canon or switching to all Sony? R5C has a 3200 high base iso that I’ve found to be really good in low light.
12:20 - Canon seriously don't get enough credit on how seamlessly they're able to have their mirrorless RF mount communicate almost flawlessly with their old EF mounts especially when it comes to autofocus. When sony switched to mirrorless they totally dumped their A mount, like completely! Whereas Canon was able to still make full use of it all.
Couldn't agree more. I've shot on numerous RF lenses that Canon makes and when I'm using their older EF lenses with their adapter it's basically the exact same experience. No difference in speed or accuracy.
Great review! As a BMPCC4k owner and having always used Nikon for photography, I’m looking for a camera that combines both for film/docu projects in the mountains, such as mountaineering/trekking, sometimes over long periods but also potentially for everyday classic shoots. Initially, I was set on the Nikon Z8, but I struggle with the image rendering in video-it’s not organic enough for my taste, it feels too clinical, good for commercial/advertising work but not what I’m looking for (more of a film-like look). I’m now hesitating between the Sony Alpha 1 and the Canon R5C for both photo and video use outdoors in challenging conditions in the wilderness. I also considered the Fuji GFX II medium format for its organic video rendering and what it offers in photography, but there are too many constraints for me. Any thoughts between the Sony A1 and the R5C? Thanks!
I can’t comment on the A1 specifically because I haven’t used it. But it’s certainly a very capable camera. Obviously I made my choice and went with the R5C, so I CAN say that I’m a big fan of the R5C and what it can do. If you’re deciding then you may consider what lenses you currently own and that may help you figure out which way to go. If you own EF glass then it probably makes more sense to go Canon rather than buying all new Sony lenses. You really can’t go wrong with Canon or Sony though. Both are very capable.
@@dustinschmidtphoto Thanks for your feedback. For now, my choice also remains the R5C despite everything. Regarding lenses, I want to completely switch my range to lighter optics than my previous F/DX lineup (Nikon 16-80 2.8 & Sigma 120-300 2.8 first version, sooo heavy in mountains). I’m thinking of opting for these three lenses for mountain trips/expeditions: RF 100-500mm f/4.5-7.1L IS USM, RF 24-70mm f/2.8L IS USM, and RF 15-35mm f/2.8L IS USM, and later adding a Nisi Athena kit or other cinema lenses as needed. Wow what a great review man! Thank you for clarifying this. I do primarily real estate and architectural photography and use two R6 MK1. Love them but looking to dump one in search of something with a better video spec and the R5C has been on my bucket list for some time. This closed the deal!
It's been great for me, but I have to admit I don't put it through the most strenuous use cases. I mostly do interview and b-roll stuff and the autofocus is great for both. But I'm not shooting super fast action, sports, or wildlife. So your mileage may vary. But my EF lenses used through an adapter have been up to the task so far. I mostly shoot with Canon L series EF glass though, and those lenses are at the higher end of Canon's old lineup, so they may perform better than more budget options.
1,5 years i have been using r5c for pretty much everything video outside live studio - mostly after-videos and music videos. Yeah. Some stuff is frustrating. HDMI, noisy ISO values between 800 and 3200, no open gate video, IBIS, no 1.5x anamorpic desqueeze. But what is there is golden. Bcam for Alexa or Red? Easy. Take care of highlights and you have image that is second to almost none.
I love my R5c. I don’t do any major production but I mainly document my family travel in photo and video. I shoot with the 14-35mm f4 and 70-200 f4 and it’s a great combo. It’s compact enough while packing a great punch in photo or video mode. If I want to shoot longer video the simple small rig v mount doesn’t add too much heft to the camera and I can easily go a day with USBC power. I can keep this camera easily for the next 10 years and beyond… I just hope canon stays with firmware updates for at least a few more years
The 14-35 f4 and 70-200 f4 are some really fantastic lenses, especially for how compact they are. I also REALLY hope Canon continues firmware updates on the R5C. It should have a lot of staying power.
@@dustinschmidtphoto that’s exactly why I went for the F4 version. I had the 24-105 but decided to sell that lens and go for both the 14-35 and 70-200 yes I swapped one lens for two but I gained 10mm on the wide end and 95 on the zoom end. The 70-200 is so light and compact and don’t really notice a huge difference between 4 and 2.8. The 14mm wide end too is just awesome too for unique photo and video perspective way wider than 24mm.
@@jdpst20 I love a wide 'ol lens. I have the 16-35 F4L IS, the EF mount. I love that the RF 14-35 is image stabilized as well. And the size is unbeatable.
Hey thanks for the question. Unfortunately the R5C does not allow for direct recording to an SSD. But it does have dual card slots, so you can get the benefit of recording backups in real time (in certain codecs) or getting relay recording, again in certain codecs.
For a guy who’s mostly doing stills and probably not going to do professional video but wants a good camera for TH-cam videos I think this looks like a solid option.
Hello! It's an amazing review, thank you! I have a question: which adapter mount do you use from RF to PL adapter? I've been looking for one of them with ND filters incorporated, like the EF-RF adapter that you show on the video, which I think that it's very powerful because you don't need to buy a new mattebox, but I'm not sure if they exist. Do you have two adapters? From RF-PL and RF-EF or just one of them? Please clarify that because in the Gear list there's any adapter mount. Thank you for the video, everything was so clear and helpfull.
Thanks for the question. I use a Metabones RF to PL adapter. It does not have a built in ND though. There are a few options for RF to PL that DO feature a built in ND but I do not own any of those unfortunately so I'm not qualified to comment.
It's a Wooden Camera D-box. Unfortunately it's discontinued though. woodencamera.com/products/d-box-v-mount-base-unit?srsltid=AfmBOoobuE6yEd24_AocGodR4FlhkHaUsDkwVKw9itVO-0f2_PW7rPrL
Great video. I own a few BMPCC 6K’s that we use for our productions and we absolutely love them but they have a very extreme crop when you shoot 120fps. I was thinking of picking up some R5-C’s for low light live events like indoor sports. ….. My question is , how well does the auto focus track at 120 fps?
Great question, I’m afraid I don’t know the answer for you. It’s just not a use case I’ve found myself in. I’m usually doing interviews and broll so I haven’t shot any indoor sports with the r5c.
Hey! Thank you for the video update. I’ve used an R5(non-c) for the last 2 1/2 years and love it. I’m interested in purchasing the r5C, but would like to know if I can match these images easily in post? Any thoughts or help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you so much in advance! -Raymond
@@dustinschmidtphoto thank you for the tips. I’ll have the complete decision within the next few days. It’s either going to be another r5, or the C variant. I feel like I should at least have the C in the arsenal, but not 100% sure yet. The video has helped me tremendously. Thanks again! Cheers!
Great video! I’m currently using an RF 24mm-70mm lens for video and photography on the R5C. However, I’m looking to purchase a better lens for cinematic videos. Any recommendations?
Great question. I’d probably ask you what kind of work are you primarily doing? Corporate? Commercials? Weddings? Etc. How fast do you need to move? Do you work with crews or are you mostly a one man band? Your question is a broad one, so having more info would be helpful when trying to answer that question.
@@dustinschmidtphoto Thanks for responding. I’m looking to do commercials, documentaries and talking-head videos. I eventually want to get into weddings as well. I like my current lens but just was wondering if there was a certain one that would give me more of a cinematic visual or maybe it’s dependent upon what I do the video in post, Right now, I’m working solo.
@@DaEssence7 I think a 24-70 is already a great documentary lens actually. Guys like Matthew Heineman have used that lens to shoot many Oscar worthy docs. For talking heads I like fast primes for background separation in situations where you don't know what locations you may have available to you for interview setups and you need all the speed you can get. Something like a 35 and 50 prime to start. Then you can build out to opposite ends of that range and get a 24 and 85. If you're shooting commercials then primes are ideal as well, but possibly cinema style primes, that have manual focus and longer focus rotation, as well as consistent t-stops.
I own the R5C , R3 and two C70 my self.. All great cameras, but none of them match perfectly, the biggest problem being the c-log 2 vs c-log 3 colors. it can be matched but takes time in post. For photo i would sell my soul to get the R3 with the cinema menu from the R5c. the R3s auto flicker detect... but also the R5Cs 45 MP, but keep the R3s speed and backilluminated sensor.. (Maybe the R1 will have all that, and i can switch my two photo camera setup out for a 1 photocamera setup) For the video side i just love the build in ND in the C70s and two of them match super easy if you have lenses that match. My setup for the R5C is the ND adaptor to EF and a V mount from FX lion as the one you use, it solved the battery life perfectly. Lovely camera.
I agree with you on the matching. There are some slight differences. If I only have access to Clog3 then I'll shoot that on both cameras, even though I know some people will just interpret R5C footage as Clog2 anyway. There's still plenty of dynamic range in Clog3. Glad to hear from other Canon users making it work across varying bodies, formats and challenges.
If I put an external monitor on this, can I still record internally? I was surprised that my R6 II doesn’t allow this. I like to use externals, so I’d like to know before investing in this. Can someone give me the low down?
You can record both internally and externally at the same time. All of the nuances and specifics of which formats and codecs are available will depend on your recorder and settings. You’ll want to consult the R5 C manual for that.
If you're talking about the graphics that are on the push-on lens caps around 8:43 then those are graphics that I designed and then had them printed as round stickers from moo.com. The stickers were then placed on 85mm front caps purchased from simmodlens.com. I actually have some Sigma designs up for sale at the moment here: tinyurl.com/yeywwnr6 If there's enough interest in Canon stickers then I may upload those for purchase as well. Thanks for the question!
The c-box works with any camera that has either a full size hdmi or sdi connection. Its function is to convert the signal from one to the other and provide additional outputs. The only thing I don’t like about it is that it will constantly drain power from the v mount battery when a battery is attached. So you need to unmount your battery if you’re not actively using it. But otherwise I have had zero issues with mine. I love it.
Any suggestions to improve battery life in a situation where a venue is not allowing mains power due to "trip hazards"? I already know the Media button trick...but that only affects standby time, not actual recording time. Thanks in advance!
@@dustinschmidtphoto thank you, we are working towards that solution, but wondered if there was any possibility of using a high capacity (50,000 mAh or higher) portable power source like a USB power bank to run the camera, something that could be belt mounted to reduce the weight in the hands of what is already a substantial unit. Might this be possible?
@@Daft_Ideas you can certainly use any USB power bank that has power delivery. And you could just run a long USB C cable that is rated for power delivery from the camera down to a power bank on a belt or in a pocket.
Thank Dustin. I bought this camera as a gift for a friend. One thing he’s encountered is that his PC fails to “see” the XF-AVC format if he uses a USB -C cable…but he can see the photos and video in mp4 format. Worryingly it seems a problem a few users have had, but the only workaround seems to be “use a card reader”. Have you encountered this?
@@Daft_Ideas thanks for the question. I wish I could offer you some intelligent advice but unfortunately I don’t have any PC experience, I’m a Mac user. I do always use a card reader to transfer files though.
I agree - Im actually about to buy one. I cant see anything else that can compare to it... I have an EOSR - Im a simple guy. I was going to buy a blackmagic camera. But this one here is NEO. Its the one.
I actually moved from an EOS R to the R5C as well, at least from the stills perspective. Also for the added video features, but I'd been shooting a C300 III alongside the R. The video quality of the R5C compared to the R is lightyears ahead in my opinion.
If you're referring to any fan noise in the audio, then that's from a Thunderbay 8 Raid from OWC and a Thunderbay 4 mini that sit on my desk just off of camera.
As long as you use matching color settings on both canon cameras then the process of shooting two different Canon bodies of varying model is very easy. You should be 99% of the way there.
@@creativegreatsvisuals Unfortunately that's a deep and varied question. There are many, many options for how to setup the color on your R5c. I would recommend reviewing the R5c manual and many of the documents on Canon's website for a deeper understanding of the topic.
@@creativegreatsvisuals You would match the Gamma and Color Space settings to the be same on both cameras. And adjust all other relevant settings to match on the day as well (main rec format, main resolution/bit rate, white balance, etc.) If you do that then the files coming out of the two cameras would be extremely close in terms of the look. Additionally the lenses that you use may impact the look of the final recording, so using lenses from the same manufacturer may help.

Could you please tell me if I can connect an SSD to my camera for video recording?
Hey thanks for the question. Unfortunately the R5C does not allow for direct recording to an SSD. But it does have dual card slots, so you can get the benefit of recording backups in real time (in certain codecs) or getting relay recording, again in certain codecs.
For a guy who’s mostly doing stills and probably not going to do professional video but wants a good camera for TH-cam videos I think this looks like a solid option.
The R5C is a beast at both. But it’s a phenomenal stills camera on its own for sure.
Which breakout box are you using with the VMount and SDI inputs?
-Raymond
I imagine you could match them relatively easily. Shoot Clog3 on both, apply the same Canon conversion lut and you should be 95% of the way there.
(Maybe the R1 will have all that, and i can switch my two photo camera setup out for a 1 photocamera setup)
For the video side i just love the build in ND in the C70s and two of them match super easy if you have lenses that match.
Hey,
Where do you get your lens caps?
If you're talking about the graphics that are on the push-on lens caps around 8:43 then those are graphics that I designed and then had them printed as round stickers from moo.com. The stickers were then placed on 85mm front caps purchased from simmodlens.com. I actually have some Sigma designs up for sale at the moment here: tinyurl.com/yeywwnr6 If there's enough interest in Canon stickers then I may upload those for purchase as well. Thanks for the question!
can the c-box work for the c70 canon ? wooden camera ...what do u not like about it ? has it ever failed you ?
The c-box works with any camera that has either a full size hdmi or sdi connection. Its function is to convert the signal from one to the other and provide additional outputs. The only thing I don’t like about it is that it will constantly drain power from the v mount battery when a battery is attached. So you need to unmount your battery if you’re not actively using it. But otherwise I have had zero issues with mine. I love it.
this video was worth the watch just for me to discover the cbox
Glad it was helpful. I’m actually not entirely sure if wooden camera is still selling that exact model but they may have something to replace it.
Any suggestions to improve battery life in a situation where a venue is not allowing mains power due to "trip hazards"?
I already know the Media button trick...but that only affects standby time, not actual recording time.
Thanks in advance!
What kind of battery system are you currently using? I recommend a v mount with usb c power delivery. You can run for many, many hours that way.

Thanks for the comment. Welcome.
is that the fan from the r5c on the video?
If you're referring to any fan noise in the audio, then that's from a Thunderbay 8 Raid from OWC and a Thunderbay 4 mini that sit on my desk just off of camera.
@@dustinschmidtphoto i think i could only hear it cause i was listening on headphones! ha
in all honesty how long does it truly take to match this up with a c70 ? or c300? from luts to and color correction ?
As long as you use matching color settings on both canon cameras then the process of shooting two different Canon bodies of varying model is very easy. You should be 99% of the way there.
what are those color settings called ? and what are they under in menu ? @@dustinschmidtphoto
@@creativegreatsvisuals Unfortunately that's a deep and varied question. There are many, many options for how to setup the color on your R5c. I would recommend reviewing the R5c manual and many of the documents on Canon's website for a deeper understanding of the topic.
@@dustinschmidtphoto what exactly do u adjust to match c70 with r5c ?
@@creativegreatsvisuals You would match the Gamma and Color Space settings to the be same on both cameras. And adjust all other relevant settings to match on the day as well (main rec format, main resolution/bit rate, white balance, etc.) If you do that then the files coming out of the two cameras would be extremely close in terms of the look. Additionally the lenses that you use may impact the look of the final recording, so using lenses from the same manufacturer may help.
Thank you, great video! Love my R5C
Thanks for watching!
nice video. for me at least I had some negative experiences with this camera. tbh, I should make a video about because its a lot. slowly wanting to move on from canon and go into a Sony FX3
You should make a video highlighting your experiences. I'm always interested in other people's perspective on the R5C.
