How lethal is Fallout's Laser Rifle?

  • Don't bring bullets to a laser fight. One of the most iconic weapons in the entire Fallout franchise is the laser rifle.
While the classic games touted the Wattz laser rifle, the newer games have brought upon the wasteland's most common, the AER9 Laser Rifle. But how much damage can weaponized heat and light dish out? Let's find out. Vapourization from an AER9 Laser Rifle is one of the worst ways to go.
I feel like I should note that there's not a ton of in-game explanations for the mechanics of the laser weapons, so I did my best to marry what is in the game(terminal entries, infrequent vapourization, etc) with some real life science(req'd energy to vapourize something, nervous system speed, etc).

Honestly I'd rather die from vaporization than from any other type of weapon. It's instant, it's painless, and you won't even realize that it happened. I think it's better to go like that than dying in pain and fear.

As others already commented. If your brain isnt able to process the pain of receiving a blast from a laser rifle pistol or rifle it would be more humane way to go. That is if vaporization was the result of every shot. In game that doesnt happen all the time. So if you´re still alive my guess is it would be really painful, like a burning sensation unless the blast also burns your nerve endings.

My headcanon for laser rifles is that they are not really laser, but rather high energy particles (the kind that do have mass) blast. It solves all the problems with in-game representation. Mass means recoil and non light speed travel speed of the projectile. High energy means potential for chain reactions and igniting effect. Particles means they could emit light as they travel (real high powered laser would be invisible unless it hit your eye, which would be blinded almost immediately anyway). And even this kind of thing would utilize lenses and such, so all the light related technobabble within the lore would still apply!

I think it’s a case of what we see in game isn’t canon
In canon the laser weapons are one shot kills or atleast one shot mutilations if the target lacks protective armour that is
If we could simply disintegrate any enemy we see in one shot the game would cease to be fun and it goes both ways if I’m level 100 a level 3 raider shouldn’t be able to kill me in one hit

Shoddycast also did a theory on how vaporizations work with lasers, he compared the standard damage of a 10mm, converted it to joules and scaled it with in-game damage against a laser pistol.
My personal hypothesis is that most of the energy in a laser passes through a target, like armor piercing bullets through soft flesh. During a critical shot, however, the energy scatters through an object instead of moving through them in a directed path. This kicks off a chain of events that culminates in a phenomenon akin to spontaneous combustion, in which the potential energy of a person's entire being is used at once to vaporize itself. It's also possible that the amount of energy needed isn't all that high, as vaporized tissue may act as a catalyst that causes water to evaporate with less energy input.

I almost feel sorry for the NCR grunts who had to charge across open fields against that, imagine just seeing dozens of the men infront of you being turned to trails and piles of ash in an instant...and worse still, from so far away that you couldn't even see the enemy. And even if you did, your service rifle barely even tickles them since they are clad in T-51B PA. Real world, we will not likely see small arms laser weapons such as laser pistols, rifles, or laser gatling as current technology would produce a self cauterizing wound with potentially less damage than being shot by a .22. There are a couple real world options for energy weapons that could produce lethal damage if developed further including particle projectors (think nuclear collider experiments, though in truth an old CRT TV was also a particle projector which is why we were told not to sit too close to them) though these would take some leaps in technology to weaponize on a man portable level, or microwave weapons (currently classed as illegal for use in warfare under international law), making microwave weapons is frighteningly easy if you know what you are doing, and they can be built on a scale not unlike a SAW and backpack.
Theoretical developments inspired by scifi that people ARE working on developing include klingon like disruptor, though it is presently (to the best of my knowledge) purely theoretical papers for physicists who love scifi, should it be developed, it is the best probability for an energy weapon able to produce massive rapid trauma to a human body outside of a particle projector (which to the best of my knowledge is only able to get scaled to something the size of a tank at present.
That said for fallout, my favorite weapon is a maxed out laser sniper rifle, though a more realistic laser rifle would likely be both silent and invisible as light does not make much of a sound humans can detect (though one could argue that weapon cooling systems would likely make a degree of noise) and using IR lighting there would be no visible beam to trace... further even if a visible light color is used, the beam should only be seen in dust particles anyway (of course cogsworth will be glad to point out how dusty most of the commonwealth is) speaking of those dust particles, they would cause beam scatter which would lower the efficiency of the laser weapon as well as lowering the effective range, but the range of firearms in most video games is seriously screwed up in the first place.
Sure... one could easily argue that most people are not going to hit quarter MOA with iron sights, but many of the scopes are in "good condition" and are displayed in game as only being somewhat dirty at worst. A 308 that can not kill out to 300 yards with iron sights has a serious problem. but that is a rant for another day :)

I don't understand how that's anywhere close to the "worst way to go". Isn't "immediate extinction" better than "getting gutshot and bleeding out over three days" or "being tortured by raider children for a week". Frankly, instantly dying sounds preferable to prolonged agony, but that's just me.

If the laser is intense enough to cause severe harm in a split second of contact, it is also hot enough to cause a cellular steam explosion wherever you hit a biological target. So, lets say one gets lasered in the gut, that individual is now dealing with a large hole from which their cooked intestines are trying to escape.

I'm sure using an energy weapon on Chinese occupied territory can be a problem. Its a new technology that the chinese can steal and exploit, and the rifles also run on microfusion cells and thats exactly what China wanted

It seems that laser weapons were common enough before the bombs dropped that the Fallout world US government regulated them in the same vein as conventional firearms. One of the terminal entries in the BADTFL office in FO4 references a guy arrested for having an unlicensed laser weapon. I'd say that China most likely was just having trouble reverse-engineering them, the same way the US had trouble reverse-engineering stealth technology.
