    Saved for a house deposit then had a midlife crisis. Got rid of my 1.2 Corsa 09 plate and got a brand new Guilia Veloce, the exact model shown here. Never been so happy to have a crisis, the only issue being I now feel I need the Quad.

    Purchased the Ti Sport (Canada) fully loaded on July 31 and I am loving it with about 1,000km driven. I have to disagree with the idea of having a touch screen. In fact, I passed on the Audi S4 and Jag XE because of the whole touch screen dominating this front dash. It is much easier and less distracting to drop my handle to the side to move a controller vs reaching forward and up to a touch screen. I could never drive a Tesla Model 3 with that stupid massive touch screen in the middle. This Alfa is a drivers car first and the infotainment system is secondary, the way it should be!

      I"ve got a petrol one in Misano blue (awesome colour by the way, everybody loves it). I totally agree with you, I had several very high-tech (german) cars and, in the end, I don't give a damn about this touchscreen infotainment hype. When on the road, I want to drive a (real) car instead of playing on a mobile computer. And man, this is a REAL car! Greetings from Belgium.

      I've purchased an Audi S5 two months ago, great car, but I'm having second thoughts having read reviews on the Gulia.. The Audi has superb build quality but it lacks a soul I feel, whereas the Gulia seems to have a very strong one. A driver's car, as you said, where the gadgets are secondary. I may try a TI sport (I'm in Montreal) this week, I hope I won't fall hopelessly in love with it, switching would be a stupid financial decision :).. I agree fully about touch screens and the Tesla, it must feel like driving a giant iPhone. Great review Thomas, Vielen Danke!

  • @Roadjull

    Good review, Thomas. I've owned a 280 bhp Veloce for almost a year and I can confirm the following:
    1) the car isn't big and you sometimes have trouble finding places for various objects, especially larger bottles. Ground clearance is good, a bit higher for Q4 models.
    2) it is noisy beyond 130-140 when compared to some German rivals, however this is compensated to some extent by the pleasant engine noise.
    3) after a year I have a very annoying rattle in my passanger side door, but had no other problems worth mentioning. None.
    4) it has almost no roll when turning, the steering is quick and it stays planted when accelerating out of corners, making it comparable to many true sports cars. The seats are awesome and grip you properly.
    5) the dampers/suspension can get tiresome and noisy on bad roads and on 19 inch wheels. But if you want beauty, you trade in some comfort I guess.
    Whatever you do, buy the active dampers. Dynamic mode can be brutal without them.
    6) I think I used the infotainment less than 10 times in total, so I dont really care about lack of apple car play (2018 models have it as standard). Did I tell you about the nice engine note?
    7) Not as fast as I want it, but fast enough for anyone not racing. The 5.2s to 100 is closer to a 6 for me, due to lack of launch control and some gearbox hesitation in 1st.
    Keep in mind that, although many have tried, the 280 bhp version can't be tuned.
    That being said, once it gets going it revs happily and doesn't run out of steam until ~200 kmph.
    8) if you want to do trackdays, get another car. The ESP cant be turned off on the non-QV models. Combine this with AWD and you just get continuous tire-screeching and rpm cut-offs during laps.
    9) whatever you do, get the paddles. The feeling when shifting is priceless. The gearbox is awesome and very quick. It kicks you in manual and it's really discrete in automatic.
    10) if your choice is Veloce and anything below 330 bhp from other companies, get the Veloce. Even if not the fastest, you'll love it every time you climb into it.

      Congratulations for your purchase, drivers' car...
      What about understeer when driven to the limit? I see lots of online videos where the Q4 really under-steers a lot more than the RWD... but then it can always be due to bad driving skills. Everyone I've heard tells the feeling is very close to RWD.
      Also I've heard the turning radius is worse on the Q4, is that true? do you find it as a problem when maneuvering?
      Anyway the ESP can be turned off, there's no easy procedure, but apparently disconnecting the battery, reconnecting it and switching on the car quickly, switches off all the controls (until the next time you start the car again - there are youtube videos that prove this). I've heard some aftermarket brand is selling an obd accessory that disables the ESP

    • @Roadjull
      @Roadjull 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      1) I can't say I've driven the car to the limit, but it's generally more well behaved in corners taken at speed than anything else I've driven. The car is essentially RWD during normal use, but redistributes traction as AWD when needed.
      2) No clue about the turning radius, I never compared Q4 and non-Q4 back to back. I'm however happy with the turning radius. I can turn on my street in 1 move, instead of the 2 with my Land Rover SUV.
      3) Not sure about the procedure you're talking about, but there is now an official way to put the car in Dyno-mode, which deactivates the ESP. This would have to be accessed through obd I guess and I'm not sure if it's permanent (until switch-off) or if it has a time limit. I didn't try it.

    Good review Thomas as always.
    I do not, however, agree with your assessment on the steering feel. I test drove both the Audi A5 Sportback and the BMW 4 Grancoupe, and I think the steering feel on the Giulia is miles ahead of any of those cars. The Giulia's steering is more precise and has much more feedback making the car much sportier than any of the German competitors. Both the Audi and the BMW are nice, but a little bit too sterile and boring. I loved the Giulia so much that I actually ended up buying a Ti Sport, which is pretty much the equivalent of the Veloce in Europe. The steering on my car is not light and the car is not unstable or jerky by any means on highway speed. It seemed you have contradicted yourself on that point, because in one segment you were criticizing the steering feel but after you had a grin on your face when you described how much fun was to make slaloms with the car.
    Also I did not agree with the noise comment. My car is very quiet on the higway. It does have a nice exhaust growl under acceleration, which again to me just makes it more sporty and more emotional than the German sedans. Fair points on being slightly smaller and with less storage than Audi or the BMW, and I also agree with you that the entertainment system especially the factory navigation could be better. I do have Apple car play which I use instead of the factory navigation and it works great in my car. Anyway, nice review overall. Maybe you should do a side by side comparison with a BMW.

    This is a great review of the Giulia! Thank you. You might want to consider doing an updated review though. Many of the things that you found lacking have been updated for the 2020+ model years. For example, the infotainment software has been improved and is now a touch screen, and the center console has been redesigned with a much improved layout, better armrest, and higher quality buttons and controls. I also own a 2018 Stelvio, and I must say that the 2020 model year improvements have made a big difference. Worthy of another look!

    Can't imagine anyone not liking this car. Really like the dark blue color. The only doubts I have with Alfa's are the build quality. I got a Guiletta last year as a rental, and certain details simply weren't put together properly. F.e. the boot lid didn't show a straight line at the closing part (difference of a couple of millimeters on the left and right). I saw these kinds of details on all Giulia's I had the chance to have a closer look to. Pity that nowadays cars are so expensive. My dad had a 156 2.5 V6 24V (do we remember the time they indicated all of this at the back? Haha), which cost 65.000.... guilders (the Euro-Guilder ratio is around 2,2).

    • @skagerstrom
      @skagerstrom 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah I sat in one at the dealer. The interior feels very cheap compared to what the price tag says. The reliability is probably just as horrible as it ever been. A shame since it looks rather nice.

    • @michelebicc6983
      @michelebicc6983 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Agree with the Giulietta. I sat in a Giulia only one time, so my opinion is not so important. By the way, it seemed built properly, similar as a BMW but less exclusive than a C Class or an Audi. Alfa Romeo is focusing on the build quality more than in the past (Giulietta is an example), and I think that they will still improve.
      Ps. It was a normal trim Giulia, you can also have it with "Lusso" package, which includes leather trimmed dashboard, real wood trims and pieno fiore leather heated seats, that surely rises the perception of quality.

      Taste is subjective I'm really not a fan of the Alfa designs. Then again they seem to have gotten better at least everyone I know who drives an Alfa is rather happy indeed with it

    • @stephenperron6539
      @stephenperron6539 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I have a 2017 Giulia and and previous to that a BMW 328 and they are very similar as far as build quality goes the leather is much nicer in the Alfa though other than that they are pretty much the same all of those cars are similar with fit and finish Merc Audi etc...It all depends which style you prefer. The Alfa is more exclusive

    • @djoetma
      @djoetma 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      @5putput Depends on where you are from I guess. Cars only got more expensive here in the Netherlands and recently the standard purchasing tax for cars rose again. It rose like two months ago and already the the government reported a rise of tax income of over 21 percent compared to this period last year. And we've had a right wing government since 2002 with the libertarian party as the leading party since almost 8 years. So what you say about green politicians being behind the rise of taxes in this respect isn't true.
      What you say about inflation isn't true either. The same people who could afford new D segment cars in a certain class in the past can't afford them today. Not in my country.
      What country are you from if I may ask?

    Nice review. Leased mine here in the States 6 weeks ago (1200 mi.). Car has been fantastic with no problems to date. Solid ride, constant fun. Service director at dealer told me the 2018s have corrected the problems affecting the 2017s which were largely software related. Have the AR Sport RWD. Vesuvio Grey with Red leather upholstery. Averaging 24 mpg. Hope they succeed in America because I would like to buy either this one, or a new one in three years at lease end. Compared this with the BMW 3 series and the Alfa was by far the best driver.

    Greetings Alfisti!. Thank you Thomas for an honest and thorough review in perfect English. I picked up my new Giulia Veloce yesterday after trading in my 2016 Giulietta QV - my 8th Alfa - and this is already my favourite car ever. To be honest every Alfa I've had has been my favourite car ever! For me the Giulia QV is over the top but the Veloce is a perfect combination of elegance and performance.
    It's still a driver's car with the low seat position - it's even lower than the Giulietta's and I have to wriggle a bit to get into my seat, but once in it feels great!
    It's my first car that uses Car Play - I've played around with it today and it integrates well with Siri. The standard audio sounds great to me, even after the Bose system in the Giulietta.
    Still being slightly over-cautious on the road as I don't want to scratch its Vulcano Black paint under its Williams Ceramic coating, and I look for a wide parking space so as not to damage the turbine alloys. Sweet! Love it!

    "Shifting paddles remain at the same place"
    That is the BEST postition: you don't have to train your brain which padlle shift up and which down when you steer your wheel more than one turn - that is the reason why rally and hypersports cars use the same column-mounted paddle shifters insted of small plastic pairs used in German rivals.

    Great review, as always Thomas.
    We own this vehicle, last year's model actually (which is not much different than this one), and you are absolutely correct (of course!! 😀).
    The car is fun to drive in an emotional way. The suspension is great... and we do like the quick steering, it just took about a week to get accustomed to it. For some reason, our vehicle, also a Q4 with with the optional differential, is quieter on the inside, but this could be because we applied window tint and we keep both roof sunshades closed.
    The Alfa quirks are all there, but eventually, we got used to them.
    Thank you again for the always professional and thorough reviews!

    The Giulia just kills me. It has the driving dynamics I would love to own, and the styling is to die for. I tested one a year ago, and was waved off by it being the first model year; buggy electronics, and small dealer network. I still lust after this car more so than the BMW 3 series. I wouldn't want a touch screen on that car: I find it distracting and, besides, it gets greasy quite soon. Regarding the nav: I know that you can also have it on the central cluster screen and it can be commanded by voice (I too find the dial system a little too complicated). Thank you for the nice review (and for not criticizing the hard plastics in the interiors' lower part, as I think EVERY car should be like that, given how much is that spot exposed to shoes and scratches)!

    Hi guys I bought the Alfa veloce Alfa red 1 year ago in Australia approximately $80,000 so quite expensive but has all the extras, full sunroof, sound system & it’s the 280 h.p great car to drive & I love it. But I wish it had a touch screen & a better exhaust sound. I’m going to get it modified to sound better, like the older Alfa’s. Also the brake by wire brakes feel unsafe & I don’t like the feel ,, especially at low speeds like going around a roundabout, but they do stop you.

I found a bit weird the steering feelings you had, because some time ago I tried a Giulia Super (not a Veloce) and I had a totally different feeling: I found the steering - suspension pair very well calibrated and I felt very "connected" to the road. LED headlights aren’t strictly an upgrade over HIDs. Take for example how many cars with LED headlights do not have headlight washers, headlights above a certain brightness level require them, making it seem like in many cases car manufacturers are using them as a cheap way to get whiter light. Ford is conspicuously bad about this.

    Thank you Mr. Thomas for Veloce review! I was hoping for petrol version, but its ok. :)
    Couple of thing regarding some of the stuff.
    LSD (limited slip differential) is very good option even on the normal cars and normal speeds. The standard diff (open) can slip when is no traction on one wheel. He sends almost 90% of the power to the wheel that has no traction. Another thing when cornering, lsd helps with entering the corner. Open diff push you out of corner, limited pulls you in.
    For me fixed shifting pedals are the way to go. They stay in place, and you know where they re when the steering is turned. When they are turning with the steering you can get confused and you can miss the gear.
    And they are option. If someone doesn't want them, just dont thick that option. :)
    And the last thing :D
    Steering speed. Its just some thing it takes getting used to. My 156 have much quicker steering than Bmw e46, and i love it. At high speeds its not that intimidating. I drive it relaxed just i drive other cars really.

    Danke sehr Thomas for the detailed review. The interior does look cheap, even by European standards. Why? I just returned from 9 days in Munchen. Loved it. Question: why are some many cars de-badged in Munchen/Germany? 50% of the cars were de-badged (meaning, the letters of the model of the car in the rear were removed. All you see is the manufacturer's emblem). Tschuss.

Not great for a diesel and would probably get more out of an A4 or a 3 series - but would not find myself staring out of my house window looking at it if I had have bought either of those instead so that is worth a few extra mpg :)

      what does it take for people to admit that alfas have absolutely no reliability.as i said above i had a 3.2 159 which i fell in love with then by the time i sold it i hated it.looks are not enough for a car to be popular.people pay good money to buy cars and alfas are a liability.just so you know i now have a new model cx5,diesel and my wife a honda civic sport,1.5 turbo giving out 184 bhp.that little honda is so much fun to drive.a million times better car than the alfa.i hate to think what the type r would be like or even the gt.sorry to upset you.i am just trying to be honest with people who read and see these reviews.

      Well, from another Alfa 159 owner, I have a 2010 159 Ti TBI sedan, bought 5 years ago, and apart from a minor electrical issue which has no impact on the car if driven daily has had no reliability problems. The early 159s with their GM derived engines were not the best. And the V6 has its issues. But later models, provided they were serviced correctly are fine. I also have a 2011 VW Passat diesel and the Alfa is just as reliable as that car. Just look at the published reliability reports to see the facts. Some of Alfa's German competitors don't fair too well. Current Alfas are great.

    Strange how car reviewers let their own opinions and subjectivity cloud their views. For example the paddle shifters. It's generally acknowledged that having the paddles fixed is the ideal solution. He "prefers" them moving with the wheel. Let the prospective owner decide.
    Also, the comment about the light steering and "artificial" feel is one that I've not heard of before. Nearly all reviews have positive views on how wonderful the steering is and how it lets you know exactly what the front end is doing.
    In fact, the dynamics of the chassis are first class and superior to their competitors. The fuel consumption, ok a bit high for a diesel but that model was heavily optioned with the Q4 system making it a little heavier plus did he check the tyre pressures. Also, has the engine been run in or is it still tight? Besides, the petrol version would easily consume more when pushed.
    One thing that wasn't mentioned were the brakes which some reviewers complain about being too sensitive. Not a mention here, but apparently not being able to fit a large bottle or no touch screen is a negative. Once again subjective options.
    The Giulia isn't perfect, it's an Alfa Romeo, but at its heart is a brilliant driving experience that's meant to be enjoyed as confirmed by all the awards it has accumulated since its launch. Think it deserves to be successful.

    I have few question I would like you to answer...
    - What do you think about Alfa's future? Their sale figures are so poor not only compared to German competitors but in general, is it possible for a brand to survive if sell so bad?
    - I know what press usually says about Alfa's build quality, and while I agree it is not the same as Audi or BMW it is actually not bad at all, especially with 159 and now with Giulia, do you think this is the main reason for very bad sale figures?
    - And finally, what do you think about FIAT as a parent company? Would you agree that VW would be a much better in keeping (for us car enthusiasts) such an important brand alive and healthy?
    Thanks...
