Should I buy an Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio ? [MY NEXT CAR]

  • The hunt for my next car continues and thanks to Alfa Romeo UK I've had a whole week to experience the mind blowing 510 horsepower Giulia Quadrifoglio and ask the question...could it be me next car ?!
    I take to on a tour both inside and out and put it through it's paces on a particularly cold day. Stunning performance from the 2.9L Twin Turbo V6 and the most incredible driving feel.
    What do you think ? Is this the car for me ?

    Disappointing to read so many (stereotypical) comments about reliability concerns. Alfa have done a great job in bringing this car to market and in record time. As a Quad owner, I concur with just how amazing this car is and I’ve not had any issues. Even if I had a few niggles, they would be worth it for the beauty, character and performance of this car!

      I’m not an Alfista. This is my first Alfa having come out of the Porsche brand, so my perspective on the car is truly objective, not through looking at the car through rose coloured spectacles. As far as I’m concerned, it’s well and truly proved itself to me and it’s just won What Car performance car of the year ..... for the 2nd year in a row. Enough said!

      Anton Zuykov it’s just Dunstan and me that can testify to the reliability of the Giulia on this thread but the last Whatcar customer survey had for cars 1-4 years old that Alfa beat all of their German competitors (the 7th most reliable of all brands). For 1 year old cars they came out as 3rd most reliable. All I’d say is give them a chance, the Giulia is a brilliant car.

    You should go for it. I have had mine since March 2018 and after 15,000 km it is still as magnificent and faultless as it was when it rolled out of the show room on its first mile. The Giorgio platform is way ahead of competition and the combination of its appearance, handling capability, chassis tuning, gear box, this glorious engine and the power to weight ratio brings together a package that is pure joy for this segment while it being also practical in terms of space. In my opinion it is a very honest proposition from the Italian factory and a taste of what is yet to come from the historic Milanese firm in the next few years.

      Petrol Ped keep up the good work. The more I think about it the more I believe that you will be best off in a Stelvio Quadrifoglio. Then everyone’s boxes are ticked imcluding the dogs. You will end up with less top end speed and less carbon (bonnet and roof) but more practicality, still the same blistering performance as in the Giulia. Well done and keep these reviews coming. 👍

    • @patrickp4827
      @patrickp4827 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You must not push yours very hard. Mine broke after 415 miles and that was after taking a freeway interchange (sweeping curve) at 70-80mph. Lateral G's starved the fuel pump with 1/3 tank of fuel and put it into limp mode. The dealer cleared the codes and ignored the TSB. My car was never the same again. I suspect they detuned it or some "fix" to reduce output instead of the TSB which called for fuel pump and feed tube replacement. Mine was a 2018. I got rid of it with a little over 1000 miles on the odometer for just over half of what I paid only 11 months prior. Alfa would NOT listen to me or offer to do anything about this. Bitter pill to swallow. I have another Alfa to liquidate now and I'm cringing at the insane loss I'll have to realize on it as well but at least I'll be free of them forever after that.

    • @georgiosdedes
      @georgiosdedes 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Sorry to hear about your experience. Despite the fact that this engine is practically bulletproof from the factory, what I normally do with all new engines in my cars is that I drive the first 6 to 8,000 km without pushing it too hard and these miles are preferrrably driven on a long journey somewhere in Europe. After that kind of mileage the computer allows to push the car more and more evenly. I would not recommend pushing really hard any car with only 415 miles on the clock.

    • @patrickp4827
      @patrickp4827 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I wasn't really pushing it. Notice I said 70-80mph around a curve. It was a long sweeping curve, an interchange from one freeway to another. I had my family in the car so I wasn't going to be crazy, and that's all it took to throw two codes and go into limp mode. Right lateral G's from a left curve is all it took. Furthermore, crazy for me is pretty tame by most standards. I'm old -lol. I also live out in the middle of nowhere so the car got virtually no city miles. It had a pampered easy life, mostly in the garage. To be fair, the design concept behind the car is great, and when they work, they work well. The fantasy comes crashing down, and crashes hard when something happens where you need help and support from Alfa. Making the decision to rid myself of the car felt like a breakup. A failed romance. Complete with all the emotional angst therewith. I still own a Q4 Ti Sport which has been flawless but I feel I must try and rid myself of it too before something should happen to it as well.

    I love my Giulia Quad. It has the greatest range of sporty to docile. It's a very safe car. I recommend trying the regular seats. I find them to be more practical. I recommend the regular brakes, but not the stock pads. Change the pads! I drive it in super cold weather and the tires are fine so far. The only issue is that I want to drive it in race mode every day... hard not to. I love my car and have no complaints whatsoever. I say go for it!

    Great report on the Guilia, Ive lusted after one for three years but a few months ago managed to at last get a three year old one with just 20k on it. Faults? yep. It went into limp mode twice within a few weeks, the fix turned out to be an update of the cars software...its now transformed and fault free. Its also got a lowered spring kit (20mm) which I wouldnt recommend mostly due to the very high risk of grounding the undertray and other bits on B roads if the surface is undulating. BUT it looks great...
    The review talks about how engaging the drive is and that four wheel drive would be great. I feel all wheel drive would spoil that completely...but of course it would be so much safer....so go buy the Audi instead if thats what you want.
    Be prepared for high running costs..17-21mpg, lucky to see 30 on a run! A pair of rear tyres every 4-5k miles. Front discs n pads are around £1400, every 20k miles, rears still good at 25k. Big service every 30k at £1500. Parts are Ferrari prices¬
    But then Ferrari were very involved with the design and development...
    I'd say a car you buy with your heart....a car you just go for a drive for the sake of it....a car you will look back over your shoulder every time you park up and walk away...can you put a price on that!

Out of my 3 previous Audi's only 1 decided that it wanted to work properly. The reliability for any car is all luck, not particularly brand based in my experience. Had mine for 15000 miles and only one non-scheduled service visit for some software updates. Certainly no worse than any of the Mercs (inc C63 6.2), BMW’s or Porsches we’ve had. Having priced up an M3 and C63 4.0 at the time also pleasantly surprised to find that the Alfa has a better trade-in figure than either, and no not against another Alfa. All cars depreciate and you don’t buy an Alfa Quadrifoglio for the sexiest sat nav, you buy it as a great drivers car. I can honestly say this is the best drivers car we’ve had, comfortable cruiser when needed, but the engine, steering and lightness give an ability few can match..Just do it!!!

    If you love the car buy it. It's the last of it's kind. It is a Ferrari saloon designed in Ferrari's wind tunnel at their facilities. There was only a 2.5 year window to get this car done before they lost access to Ferrari's full design team and facilities. Yes it's Italian electrics, but my wife can be high maintenance sometimes but I reckon I am higher, but I would not change her for the world for putting up with me. So maintenance is a subjective thing because no car has zero maintenance - it's a package. BMW and Merc are not the first choice in having no mechanical problems either. There are faults ranging from annoying to downright seriously expensive for some owners. Alphas can need some TLC., but all the owners I have met are very loyal to the brand and are sometimes race enthusiasts or race themselves. I don't think resale will be an issue at all. If you can't find something you love more I'd say buy it. Check Alpha owners forums for any known issues or common failures to this model if buying a used one before striking a deal. Also be careful of below average mileage cars as its more likely the run-in process for the motor might be short joy rides and the car may use more oil, etc, Or in the worst case, low mileage could indicate the car might have been badly damaged and spent over a year waiting for parts in a panel shop as a result of power-sliding the car at 100mph. Good luck!

    Great vid! It's hard not to love these things! I have to say that the German competitors never got a look in before we ordered our Giulia QF, I simply wasn't interested in them, perhaps I'm missing out... However, I have to say that 3k miles into Giulia ownership and all is good with the world. I love the simplicity and concealed design of the infotainment (I absolutely hate anything that looks like a non-retractable iPad stuck to the dash), I also like the fact that it is NOT touch screen and that most commonly used functions are a one button/rotational knob operation (heater fan, heated seats etc) rather than having to press a button to bring up a menu then prod at a screen to select the required operation. My previous car, a 3.0 F-Pace (I know, don't remind me..) was a total nightmare in terms of interface (and reliability too.....).
    After a few hundred miles the initial hesitation to explore the performance is reduced, though the respect for the performance is very much still there. The car seems to become more natural to drive both slowly and quickly the more you experience it.
    Go on, you know you want to! You need something different for the Spring Sprint ;-)

    Pete, it is an absolute stunner of a car. But I personally didn't find the quality of the switch gear and materials inside nearly of high enough quality. And with the black leather interior I just found it extremely dark inside. That with the added element of uncertainty regarding the reliability of the brand I decided not take the plunge. Also, Alfa were miles off the mark with the "touch over 1500kg". The qv is more around 1700kg (wet weight) if you search online with testers who have a weighbridge. An M3 CP weighs in around 75kg less.

      Have too agree I'm afraid, I've sat in one at a car meet and inside I too found that the switch gears, build quality and materials don't live up to what you would typically find a your premium German brands. There is doubt that It's a stunning looking car and that V6 sounds glorious.

    First ?
    Well it’s a very good looking car Peter but the 2 wheel rear drive would not be my choice . A lot of big numbers that could get you facing in the opposite direction on a damp, muddy British “road”. The Stelvio would definitely make for an interesting comparison. I read so many articles of unhappy owners who have had a myriad of problems with Alfa’s. I had to smile at the remark about getting old/driving saloon cars. I must be going backwards (lol), sixty seven years young, still loving my hot hatches, although it is a bit cold for the GP2 to get off the drive. I have to keep telling myself I will have a Porsche if it’s the last thing I do !!

      Your embellished claim that the M3 has destroyed the Alfa in every race track is just wishful thinking. BMW has a very decorated history in motor racing but, so has Alfa.
      I'm happy for you to reminisce the happy memories of the M3 past glories, whilst the rest of us living in the present enjoy the Alfa. th-cam.com/video/4-4c6E77obs/w-d-xo.html

    www.osv.ltd.uk/how-reliable-are-porsche/ here's a great quote from this source...." It hasn’t been easy for Porsche when it comes to dependability. Contrary to popular belief, the more luxurious the car, unfortunately does not equate to more reliable. In fact, it has been proven quite the opposite.
    In the past, Porsche have been at the bottom of the league tables. In 2019, it was named the second least reliable car brand in the UK, coming just above Bentley. The study was conducted by WhatCar? And WarrantyDirect and analysed 37 car brands and 50,000 live insurance policies. And the results showed that Porsche were not reliable at all."
