E39 M5 is tops for me. Also like many of the Lambo wheels of the last 20 years though personally I drive Ferrari. Most cars these days, when I idly play with the car configurator on the website, lose my interest when it comes to wheel designs. Current BMW, Porsche, MB: I just don't see anything I like in the least.

I own a giulia qv. After coming from an E92 M3, I must admit I did think it was a little quiet at first. I also thought slighter wider arches would have been great. After owning the car for a while though, I must say, I really love it. Its an absolute beast, but so liveable, and it really hooks you in. Chassis, steering and power delivery are really special. And it's such a stunning yet understated car.

Then a 72 Giulia with fuel injection that I drove from Vancouver to Toronto and back without a problem. Got 30mpg as well. Lastly a 2000 GTV that I loved but a drunk ran into the back and wrecked it. Sure wish I had that car today. Really enjoyed them all. Wish I could afford one of these new ones. Seems like a great resurgence for Alfa.

I test drove one of these last month, and can agree with a lot that you say. There's definitely a small lack of communication through the steering wheel when cornering briskly, but as you said the car just does it. I put it down to being so far off the limits at the time that the car wasn't feeding back anything awry. I think I need more than an hour in the thing though. The only thing i'd take issue with is the "9/10ths" bit - to me it was every bit deserving of it's accolades and not once I felt it was lacking. In it's aim of being a usable everyday rocketship I think it achieved, and certainly left me feeling much better than the Caymans i'd been underwhelmed with. I also drove a Veloce, and it felt special in a rep car way, but not a patch on the QV.

A little harsh i thought Harry. You say it is a 9/10 car but you want more noise from the V6, more fins and spoilers and more excitement. Perhaps you should take it to the track Harry? How much can you really get from a 510HP, 1650KG rear wheel drive 4 door saloon on the road at semi legal speeds, over what it already gives you? 9/10 seems pretty damn good!!! It rides beautifully, it goes like stink, it has proved reliable and take it to the track and you can drift it all day long, or set a really fast time. Isn't this Alfa exactly what we have all been waiting for. Whats the point of a even more expensive hardcore version that you can't really use on the road, BMW keep getting it wrong with the M3 and that sounds terrible. I am pretty sure you could lose £10K very easily on this car. I think you are too much of an enthusiast perhaps Harry, with such a glorious history, we all want the perfect Ferrari beating Alfa, yet that history is over half a century ago at it's most recent really. Lets celebrate what we have here, a good looking, usable, well built, very fast everyday car that rides better than most in its sector. And without too many extras, a very competitive price point. M3 anyone, well maybe the new switchable 4 wheel drive one....

    • @nakoma5
      @nakoma5 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

Of course on a track it would be even more fun but unless it's a supercar, you shouldn't need a track to fully discover the love and enjoyment this kind of sports car. The upside is that it is usable as a daily driver, though at the expense of a little emotion.

I love Harry's reviews but isn't he employed by Jaguar Special Ops on top of owning the Project 8? I think it might make it hard for him to be objective in this case. I was also surprised by his comments about it being too subtle for a sport sedan that tries to enter a very difficult market and that is not from a limited production run.

My 1st visit to "Harry's Garage", and I'm impressed. That doesn't happen very often. I've owned hundreds of cars in my fairly long life, a few Alfas among them. I'm currently on my 7th Lexus, a 2006 GS300 SE-L, which has very kingly been "breathed on" by my local Lexus dealership. It now has a top-end of 172·6mph! (Achieved over a measured runway for accuracy) Yet it's still silent, super comfortable and utterly reliable. It also returns excellent economy; giving 43mpg at 70mph, on a motorway in cruise and between 21 and 32 mpg around town. I'm happy.
(Questions about the other 6 dwarves will not be answered).
Anyway; an excellent video in every respect. I shall be on the lookout for more. Thank you Harry.

This video just happened to show up in my recommendations. I did not expect a review this good! I rarely quickly give a channel a sub and a like, but this one was deserved. Also helps that this is my favorite car at the moment haha.
One interesting part about the car is the interior. IMHO in terms of looks, it doesn't seem or feel very new. Not much inside with the dashboard, instrument cluster, etc seems to inspire much. While that seems like a drawback, I think that will be an asset in the future. A full TFT instrument cluster looks nice now, but how low-resolution will those full displays look in 8 years? A lot of these new car gimmicks won't help some of these cars age well. My family has a 2007 Audi A8, and it has analog gauges with a 4.2 inch screen sandwiched in between. That's really helped prevent our car from feeling like it's close to 12 years old.

I sense through your description the car lacked a bit of drama and connection. I understood fully your description of the car not letting you know and giving you the 100% confidence to push it hard. Some chassis just transmit that from the seat of your pants. I have driven a tuned version of the Giulia not the QV and was really impressed. The ZF gearbox is a gem, and the steering as you said is so alert, quick and sensitive, and the ride quality really nice. Never bangs or crashes in any drive mode. :-) Keep up the great work Harry. I do not miss a single thing from the 2015 M3 I traded in for the Alfa, the Alfa is better top-to-bottom. But...as Harry pointed out...this car needs a little extra something. I think slightly more aggressive styling, a real DCT transmission, and more music from the exhaust (without having to resort to Race mode) would take it from the 9 to a 10. In my book at least. There is no other new car under $100k USD that I would rather own.

Lightweight, no, but not too bad considering it has a big V6 and that it can (just about) carry a family of 5

since the year 2000 maybe? I don't know exactly. But cars aren't built as in the 60 or '70s, they got heavier, complicated and many of them boring. if this weight less than a Ton, the engine of the Veloce version would be more than enough, but for what it is, I think it's not bad at all.

Great review Harry. Just put a deposit down on a used one. A previous owner and in the Competitzione red. Can’t wait to drive it as my daily driver. Such a fab alternative to the boring BMW’s, Audi’s and Mercedes of this world!. 😊

The latest What Car Reliability Survey 2018 has Alpa in 8th place. The highest German make is down at 16th place (out of the 32 makes tested). Note this may or may not apply to the Quadrifoglio - as individual cars can vary. Cannot match the best Japanese makes who occupy most of the top ten but still pretty impressive.

What a load of bollocks. Tell me: How can "reliability" be attributed to cars less than 5 years old?

Thanks for the timely review Harry. I'll be changing my AMG C63S coupe later this year and this is on the short list.
We share the same local roads so also keen to give one a test in the next few months on the "Cirencester triangle". ;)
Will be interesting to see this compares to the new M3 announced later this year.

I'm keen on the Lexus LC500. I know it's not as capable as the M3 but I just a Japanese V8!

One of my dream cars but I agree about the styling. It looks special when the camera is zoomed in and focused on it but when you see one out in the wild they just blend in with the Honda's, Toyota's and Mazda's. I realize there's only so much you can do with a family 4 door saloon but surely they could have done more. Also seems to be Alfa tradition to make even 19" rims look small. I'd still love one though of course

@Legio XXI Rapax I'm not talking about the Tonale mate, I'm talking about this car in the video. I have seen many Giulia's driving around and in my subjective opinion they blend in with a lot of other modern 4 door saloons.

@Legio XXI Rapax Exactly. So then Alfa should've really stepped up their game and created something truly unique. Instead they played it safe to get those sales.
