    You just blew my mind in terms of perspective. 10 years ago I bought a brand new Cayman S and loaded it up with almost $17,000 worth of options. I am now in the market for a new Cayman, and even though I have more than enough money to get a fully loaded GT4 or even a 911, I just might get a base Cayman with the bare minimum of options. At the end of the day, all I really want is to drive a well-balanced, mid-engine, Porsche.

      Hello Dominic. Curious as to what the ownership experience has been with your Cayman S. Have been interested in buying one, but have been scared away based on reliability/durability issues. Over your 10 years of ownership what have you had to do to your car?

    • @yamahapilot
      @yamahapilot 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@dangrass The ones built from 2009 - 2012 are bulletproof. I drove mine through 8 harsh Canadian winters and never once had a problem. All I did was regular maintenance and extra oil changes. You won't be disappointed if you find one that hasn't been abused. I'd prefer to get a new one but I much prefer the looks of the 987.2, so I'm torn.

      @@calvin3448 Not necessarily. You get the fun near the redline. And that’s 80mph in second gear in the 4.0. Very frustrating if you aren’t on the track. Nothing worse that a fast car you can’t exploit. I’ve owned stupid quick cars. And I hated them because you can’t actually use the performance. A four cyl simple cayman with a manual box is sublime.

    Great minds think alike! My 718 is just purchased is 2021 base model. This is how Porsche should be configured and purchased. Well done! My vector and Porsche vector were not in alignment as well. The original idea the way Dr. Porsche would stand for. I was a bmw enthusiast and bmw went to a different place so I moved on to Porsche. My 718 is the purest form available. Closest to the original concept. Hope to see more content soon.

    I just found this video re-posted on the 718 forum. Fantastic job! Your feelings regarding the 911 versus the 718 match mine exactly. I have always aspired to have a 911, but they have grown too large and heavy. Like you, I would consider a pre-owned 991.1 but then it's impossible to get the spec I want. BTW - your English is excellent! Cheers.

    Right on your page Mike. I own a similar 2018 base Cayman and I totally agree, especially since I live in Edmonton Alberta Canada with the same road and winter conditions. Have had too many issues with 21 inch wheels under these conditions. I also own a classic 911 and for me I need to be connected to the car, raw and manual, no nannies and electronic overrides. Although I respect the technology, especially the way Porsche applies it, I still want the most out of my driving experience.

    Very interesting perspective, it made me think of the BMW M2 which is the "real" equivalent to the old M3 (E30/E36/E46) because the new M3s have become something else. There's a parallel to be made with the Cayman/911 of old times.

    Nice video. I bought a base 718 Boxster MY20 and it’s my daily driver. I didn’t take a manual, because of the traffic here in Melbourne Australia, so i have the PDK. I was going to get a SLC at the time. I like the base the most. Yes, there is the S, and the GTS, but i like the base. It has enough power for me. It has the feel of quality, the MY20 so it has the sport exhaust as standard which was option before. I specified mine with the leather interior too with sport tex. I got the base as my first Porsche because in my book if they can’t get the base right, then they can’t get any other model right. I have Aventurine Green (manual mirrors), all leather interior. I have had it a year now.

My past Porsches: silver 2004 Boxster base MT, silver 2008 Carrera base MT, black, of course and still a base, 2012 Carrera Black Edition PDK (oops! my mistake), NEXT a 2022 718 Cayman base MT. Forever Manual! OK went with python green--call me crazy. Drove by a dealer here (in Socal) this week and of the 40 cars (most were likely in for service) I saw huddled together on the lot EVERY single one of them was a muted color-- blacks, greys, whites, silvers--not one car with any pop. It was like looking at a grey cloudy sky of Porsches. Life is short--go for it!

    I bought a 718 Cayman for the same reasons. I like the design language with more physical buttons and less digital inputs. The difference is i went with the 4.0 liter manual because it's a dying breed and I want to secure one before it's too late. I tried to do away with as many electronics as possible. No power folding mirrors, no lighting package, no LCA, No LED llighting cause it adds an extra module for auto high beam, no entry drive, no Nav, No Bose or Burmester, you get the point. In america they include parking sensors which I don't want either but I'm stuck with it and will have holes in my front and rear bumper. I just wish I could have paid extra for an manual hand brake.

    I'm so glad I stumbled upon your video. Like you, I value the essential Porsche driving experience. That means a six-speed manual above all else! What makes me hesitate to pull the trigger on a Cayman is all the complaints I hear about the tall gearing - it has six gears but you only get to use two. That would drive me nuts. I'm looking forward to getting your opinion once you've been driving it for a while. Keep making these videos :-)

    • @ForeverManual
      @ForeverManual  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It all depends on how to use it. Here’s the thing. If you are up to revving the engine all the time to a red line then the second gear is your legal limit. Riding on a torque-rich middle range though makes me utilizing all six within the city restrictions. It’s just not “the Porsche experience” we all read about - I’m keeping noise low while enjoying other ways of communicating with the car :)

    • @inglebybhoy3293
      @inglebybhoy3293 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That’s an interesting point. But I find it makes me think more about my driving style in various different situations. I find that I’m engaging with the transmission more than any other manual car I’ve driven. That was the reason I bought a sports car and I think my driving has improved as a result.

My goal has always been a 911, but now I have "settled" for a Cayman and I don't think I will be missing out on much. I looked for a used one, but there are not that many out there that are equipped how I want my car so eventually I just bit the bullet and speced one myself. Looking forward to follow you on you 718 journey :)

    I just bought a 21 base cayman and agree with pretty much everything you say except I took the torque vectoring option as I think it’s useful in snow look forward to seeing all your videos

    Hello Mike,
    Congratualtions on your new car.
    Enjoy it, currently i am in a money saving mode for the base 992, but the problem is that tou can’t get the base model with stick shift, in Armenia even the S and 4s are not available with the manual.
    Waiting for the new videos from you.
    Greetings from Armenia.

    I think the manually fold mirrors is kinda of a weird choice from Porsche, they should have came standard with power folding mirrors at that price.

    +1. Subscribed. .. I'm all aboard for your 2.0l Cayman ownership journey.. Its spec reminds me of an '87 944 coupe I'd own.
    That base 944 2.5l non-turbo became my daily driver of 10 years,,, until ordering the '98 993 C2S w/rear wiper,, which is still in the garage. .. I am considering the purchase of a 4 cyl turbo Cayman, either the 2.0l or 2.5l. Here in the thin air of Colorado mountains 8,250ft elevation, turbocharging has advantages... I think you're on to something, a daily driver 2.0l Cayman w/ full leather and that's it for expensive PAG options. . I accept your invitation. . Cheers, M/S Vail, Colorado

    The base Boxster as shown here is certainly the best value at only $60,000 (US). I see you have several options which probably makes it cost a few thousand more but it’s still good value. I’d love to get the GTS but I’m not sure it’s a good value at $90,000. The fact that it’s got a six cylinder plus great options standard makes it very desirable but with only a few options more your over $100,000. So I’m curious, is the main reason you chose the flat four, the better price or what? I wouldn’t blame you at all because I’m thinking of doing the same thing except the flat six looks so great. Thanks for your viewpoint and honesty; it is refreshing.

      It’s definitely the price above all. But with 100k as I said I would be shopping for a used 991 without even thinking of 718.

    The 718 is a great platform. My personal favorite of Porsche’s mainstream lineup. The 911 has just gotten too big.
