The Base Porsche 718 Ep 7 - Deleting the PCM and installing the GT4 Short Shifter on a 2.0 Manual

- Welcome to the Porsche workshop to make the Base 718 Cayman even more basic! The Cayman T isn’t available on our market. But I would not go for it anyway. Poor color choice, unnecessary options, heavy wheels - not my cup of tea😉 So I took the path of further simplifying the Base 2.0 MT. I haven’t turned the music on since my base Cayman was new - I never do. So it’s about getting rid of the unused stuff. Not about shaving off the weight. Although leather interior is slightly lighter thanks to hollow panels instead of the foam filled plastic ones. The PCM deletion was the part of the plan from the beginning as well as re-trimming the steering wheel using GT4 parts. The trim panels in black leather are optional and specced with the car. The short shifter is also the GT4 part. Speakers left in place since the parking sensors do work without PCM just fine.

What do you lose in the multi-function display having removed the pcm? Obviously you will lose the phone and audio screens but do you still have the car gauges? Trip computer? What about time and outside temperature. A quick video showing us would be fantastic.
No need for that since you don’t loose anything apart from phone and audio screens you mentioned, although those can be deactivated at any time on any 718 via MFD’s standard interface. The MFD is totally independent. It uses separate bus and control unit. It’s just need to be told to stop communicating with missing PCM unit - hence my car is reprogrammed to see itself as the T with factory PCM delete option.

I have the standard steering wheel in my Cayman, and was considering changing the silver surround trim to black. After seeing it done, it looks like a pretty easy swap

Hi Mike, huge fan of yours. I ordered a T model which getting it in June this year. I found that the sliver trim on the steering wheel doesn't match with itself, after seeing your videos, the black trim set is my ultimate solution for it! Thanks sharing the instructions and tips. Much appreciated.

@@stealthhtm23 it's fine for me, but it depends on your local driving condition. but since changing to gt4 front bumper, I had to be much more careful with it.

Hi Mike, really enjoying your videos. I also have a Base Cayman with manual gearbox. Out of curiosity how much did the short shifter conversion cost?

You may also need new knob with shortened sleeve attached. The price of that one varies depending on the material you prefer. In my case it’s double the price of the shifter.
Next step: take a straps from GT4 instead Boxter door handles.

Weird question: wouldn’t it have been possible to wire in some sort of Bluetooth connector into the wiring harness to still have audio from phone through the speakers?
Not weird at all! I thought about it. There must be a solution. I’m sure there’s no need to wire it in, it should be plugged into the power amplifier just the way the parking sensors unit is. Please let me know if you find one🤝🏻

Really tempted with the short shift, hmmmm more money. Also noticed that you had something in the annoying little cubby hole behind the gear level, ie the bit that gets deleted if you tick the smokers option. Could you let me know what this is and where i could get it?
You don’t need it. All 718s in our market come equipped with the GLONASS tracker. So the emergency button/microphone unit replaces the small storage box behind the gear lever.
@@ForeverManual hate the look of that small storage hole. If i ever spec new i will go for the smokers package

They really distract the eyes focus
Didn’t know such part existed. The build is based on OEM parts. Also I managed to ignore the vents somehow 😀 At the end of the day those little touches of chrome such as the ring on the airbag, the top of the shifter knob and the vents get along with door handles which would be difficult to alter.
Is it possible to swap manual gearbox to a pdk/automatic gearbox with paddle shifts on 981 gt4
Dude, I beg you: leave the GT4 alone! It’s too rear to ruin it with swapping the gearbox. I mean anything can be done really, it's just not worth the hassle and expense. Sell it to someone who appreciates it as is, and buy a 718 gt4 pdk 🤷♂️ easier and cheaper

Сам блок аварийного оповещения с акселерометрами сохранён и работает. Убрал тревожную кнопку с микрофоном. Потом может перенесём куда-то, если всё приживётся.
А какой смысл удаления мультимедии? Всё вокруг неё остаётся же на месте и вес особо не снижает

Редко бываю на телефоне - хватит наушника. Но возможно, вживим какой-то BT блок, раз усилитель и парктроники работают
