  • In this episode, we arrive in Sydney, Australia, for the first time, where we will stay when we return in September. We want to fully immerse ourselves in the city and see what it has to offer. Sydney, the capital of New South Wales and one of Australia's largest cities, is best known for its harbourfront Sydney Opera House, with a distinctive sail-like design.

This was delightful to watch. So sick of young people online saying Sydney is crap with no history or culture. It was great to see you excited and amazed at what you saw in Sydney. Same except it's likely to bring too much immigration. We might end up like France and the UK. Riddled with crime, can't wear nice things or even freely use our mobiles in public. Indians and Muslims seem to take over parts without assimilating to Australian culture and the Chinese driving up property prices and holding up parking spaces by standing in it.

Hey there, fun fact if you’re still in Sydney! If you visit the Queen Victoria Building (QVB) at the front of the building opposite of Town Hall is the Statue of Queen Victoria.
That statue was originally located in front of the Oireachtas building in Dublin before it was removed in 1948 after Ireland became a republic. It was moved around a lot before being kept in storage and forgotten. Until the 1980s, when the QVB was undergoing through major renovations, the renovation group was looking for a good statue as the central piece for the QVB. Through contacts, they “rediscovered” the abandoned Irish Statue of Queen Victoria and were able to ship the statue to Sydney from Dublin in 1987.
And the irony of the British Queen being "transported" to Australia by ship was not lost on the media at the time!

Welcome to my town guys - I've lived here 67 years. A couple of things you should do asap - if you're staying up a Pymble hop back on the train to Circular Quay, then catch a ferry over to Manly. Then take the harbourside walk to Shelly Beach and splash your toes. You haven't experienced Sydney until you've been on the harbour. Then maybe another ferry to Balmain or Barangaroo or Darling Harbour. Ferries are a great way to observe places you'd like to visit when you're tired of walking. Then you should get up high in one of those skyscrapers. Sydney looks stunning from above. Sydney Tower. If you feel like a bit of more walking, a walk from The Rocks across the harbour bridge is free (you don't have to do the bridge climb thing) to Milsons Point / Luna Park and Kirribilli for a gelato or coffee. Then you're back on the rail line home again. Sydney is all about the harbour and the beaches. The water is a bit cold at the moment but you're Europeans so you'll be used to that. Get in there!

That nickname is horrible. It’s not the fault of the Australian Ibis that their habitat dried up during the long years of drought. It’s a testament to them that they survived by coming into the cities from the wetlands and found ways to survive. It’s humans who throw away half eaten foods that led them to search the bins. Their normal habitat included food from nature: Ibises have long downcurved, slender bills that they use to probe into shallow water, mud or grass when looking for fish, frogs, crayfish, mussels, shellfish, crabs and insects.
Now humans have them eating human garbage!

Love your vide of my city. My Great Great Great Grandfather stole a cow at Enniskillen Ireland in 1815. He was convicted and sentenced to 7 years penal servitude in New South Wales. He left Cork in the ship Martha and arrived in Sydney in 1818. He served his 7 years and decided to stay, after being given a land grant to start a farm on the Hawkesbury River West of Sydney, near the town of Windsor. He became a solid citizen and helped to build St Matthew’s Catholic Church in Windsor. He died in 1857 and his headstone is still readable in the Catholic Cemetery of Windsor. Sadly, my Grandfather tried to hide his “convict” heritage. Me, I’m proud of my Irish heritage. I visit his grave when I can to consider his incredible life experience. Enjoy Sydney. Don’t be sucked in by the expensive tourist traps.

Most of the Irish Convicts were political prisoners.
Check out the 1798 Memorial, Waverley Cemetery overlooking the Pacific Ocean.
"The 1798 Memorial, made of marble, bronze and mosaic, in Waverley Cemetery, Sydney, is the finest 1798 Memorial in the world. It was raised over the grave of a famous Irish character, the Wicklow Chief, who died in Sydney, long after the events of 1798.
      The Wicklow Chief
Michael Dwyer, the Wicklow Chief, is a well-known historical figure in Ireland. Irish people know that he took part in the 1798 Rising in Wexford, and when the Rising had been quelled, he continued the fight in his native Wicklow hills. Irish people generally do not know that he is buried in Sydney."
On 14 December 1803 Dwyer surrendered on condition that he be sent to America. He was sent to Australia. He arrived in Sydney on 15 February 1806 with his wife, Mary, on the convict ship, Telicherry. He was classed as a state prisoner, not a convict. Governor King had to treat him as a free settler. He gave him a grant of 100 acres (40.4 hectares) along the Cabramatta Creek outside of Sydney."

@linnight9277 He said "all the cafes (that) are enclosed inside business buildings are under the ground, usually". Never said "all the cafes are hidden away" at all.
While "usually" isn't the term to use, there's heaps of coffee & food outlets that are either in lower than street level space, or in basement inside multi-storey buildings.
That's not even counting heaps more (over 100) cafes* in or near the underground railway stations, along basements levels of QVB Heritage Building with heaps of cafes (as well as shop), connecting basement level areas & walkways between department stores, and more sub-street level places.
(*many are not sit at or sit in cafes, but there's very often (shared) area near them where can sit).
There's so much underground shops & cafes plaza like spaces & walkways, that a map of Underground Sydney would be quite useful.
Anyway, nearly all the cafes that aren't a bit pricey or pricey aren't easy to find.

$6 to $7 ($7.50 at some) for a Large Coffee is (usually) ok/fair, as many places put a double shot in a Large, and as it's bit less than double the amount of milk of a small, it's good value, as don't need to pay for 2 coffees, for same kickstart, wakeup, etc

It's disgusting what is happening with inflation and immigration by the cl0wns in charge, and it's happening globally as you probably already know.

I'm a Queenslander, and I adore Sydney's history. I've been to the QVB, and the clock was magical. Also, I did a walking tour around the Rocks area where you can see in the stone walls built by the convicts the pick marks of their tools. The grouting contains remnants of shells crushed by the female convicts. The Mitchell Library or State Library was one of my favourite buildings and I spent nearly all day in the Art Gallery. I've been to Ireland too and loved it there. Have a great time and I enjoyed your tour and seeing your impressions.

Contrary to the belief of some, you get all the same daily/weekly fare caps as an Opal Card, except that it will always charge adult rates (so kids and seniors virtually always use a special Opal card, not a credit card),

That was a really clever itinerary. You definitely would have worn your shoes out! Catching the State Library for bonus points ;)
If you're coming back to live in September (springtime, coming into summer) the one thing I would say as a Sydneysider is: BEACHES. There is honestly only one other city in the world that is remotely in the same league as Sydney for quality and variety of beaches, and that's Rio de Janeiro. Daylight second after those two cities (and I think Sydney wins over Rio TBH). Sydney has every kind of beach. Basically there are 2 categories of beach: ocean (waves) or harbour (protected). Within those categories there are:
    - ocean facing beaches of sensible size (Bronte, Avalon, Coogee)
    - ocean facing beaches too big to comprehend (Cronulla, Narrabeen)
    - ocean facing inlets, protected from the waves with INCREDIBLE snorkelling (Clovelly) (or Gordon's Bay right next door if you're very adventurous, suits scuba more than snorkel unless conditions are very flat)
    - harbour beaches where you jump off rocks (Camp Cove, also fairly common to find bioluminescent things at night here)
    - harbour beaches where you get nude (just around the coprner at Lady Jane)
    - harbour beaches with great snorkelling (well almost all of them if you go to the rocky flanks, but special mention to Shelly Beach, Clifton Gardens & Collins Beach)
    - beaches where you will inexplicably be the only person there and so completely surrounded by "tropical" [not technically] bushland that you will not believe you are anywhere near a city (Store Beach which is a short scenic snorkel away from Collins Beach, Washaway Beach which looks out through The Heads and sometimes acts like an ocean beach, Castle Rock Beach, etc, etc etc)
Invest in a mask, snorkel AND FINS. Snorkelling is much easier to get into than surfing. And frankly IMHO more rewarding. The fins make all the difference. Trust me :) And a GoPro if you plan to do videos!
And finally, under NO circumstances should you go to Bondi. It is BY FAR the worst beach in Sydney. Yes, it is ocean facing, faces southeast, is large and is curved so it catches a surfable swell quite often. But the same can be said of Coogee, Dee Why & Cronulla. Bondi's only claim to fame is that it is the closest OCEAN beach to the city. The harbour beaches are better than the ocean beaches unless you surf. And every other ocean beach is MUCH better than Bondi.
Also (at the risk of this turning into an essay) you mention feeling safe from pickpockets etc in the CBD. This is true. Sydney is basically very safe. No pickpockets to speak of. Literally the only place that you need to watch out for thieves is.... Bondi Beach. Avoid.
Oh and (god , this really is turning into an essay) if you're doing beaches please don't become the Irish cliché of being burned like lobster on your first visit and so never wanting to go back. Irish skin here (mum was from Navan) and also a skin cancer doctor, so I promise you that nowehere burns Irish skin as quickly as Australian sun. Invest in (I'm serious)
    - a "rashie" WITH a hood for ANY snorkelling. Sunscreen just won't cut it, no matter how often applied. Slip, Slop, Slap.
    - a huge broad-brimmed hat. The straw hats they sell at Bunnings are ridiculously good quality for the price (precisely because they are "branded"... Bunnings make a loss on them in the hope that ten years from now buyers think that Bunning=quality. Ditto Bunnings "branded" umbrellas & buckets. Nothing else from Bunnings is great value)

Of course there are some areas where crime is a little higher but you can walk around any of the cities busiest hubs and not need to worry about being pickpocketed, or abused. We are indeed still the lucky country (at least in that respect).

Go to the NSW Tourist Bureau and pick up pamphlets to help you decide where you want to go in Sydney. Hope you continue having a lovely time in Australia.

Great stuff guys, Sydney is a cool place and was a blast watching you guys buzzing around the City, I was over at Ireland only late last year doing the same thing loving it, loving how all the buildings aren't to high, drove all over the place and loved the Wild Atlantic Way, all the towns and love Belfast and Dublin, loved the pubs and the Guinness, everyone was nice, hey loved your video and you guys are more than welcome back in Sydney anytime.

You were right where I work!! The sandwich factory used to be called "Hole in the Wall", and they sold the business to new owners, and still kept the standard of great delicious sandwiches! The cafe you first saw right at the end is a favourite of workers around the area! And that bird is an Ibis, lovingly called 'bin rats' and they will snatch food right from you!!!! Glad you had a good time!!

I remember that. Do miss the city, but they tore down all my favourite pubs! Only the Grand and the Angel left !
Oh, the Glenmore is still there !

My Great Aunt Lorna Beulah was the first Aboriginal Opera singer to sing there, She would sing to help with the acoustics.

A knees up mate, most Australians don't like being in videos. We're not quite sure why but it might have something to do with our proud Irish convict history and mug shots. 🇦🇺👍🇦🇺

Hire a car, drive around the Northern Beaches or the Eastern Beaches. Then drive from Syd-Bris, Syd-Melb, Syd-ACT or the interior.

The video reminded me of my usual process of visiting a city for a day...walk around, following my nose, probably missing lots of stuff but just catching the vibes. To me the Botanic Gardens are an underappreciated gem in the city, so happy to see that featured.
