The most legendary scary movie of all time! In my opinion, at least. Jamie Lee Curtis, the heroine of Halloween, is the daughter of Janet Leigh, from the iconic movie Psycho.

Characters in horror films are damned if they do, and damned if they don't. If Laurie hadn't done anything, people would be screaming "at least stick him in the eye with a coat hanger!" Personally, I think it was good improvisation on her part, as was the knitting needle to the neck.

The reason Michael Myers and Halloween is iconic is because over 40 years later we still don’t know what motivates him to kill. You guys had a great reaction. In a way I’m jealous of first time watchers because I wish I could experience for the first time again and to see that it still frightens people 40 plus years later shows how well it holds up.

It's actually an adaptation of a book. In the book, it goes back to Celtic times curse of all curses, when a deformed young man during Samhain who was smitten with a beautiful young girl was rebuked, in fact, he was laughed at and taunted by others, I can't remember if they did anything to him but he curses the girl and any offspring she has. So throughout the ages every so many generations a male is born who kills the family and somehow there is always one woman who escapes. Michael Meyer's great-granddad was hung for killing two women and complained before he went and killed those two women that voices were talking to him. The idea was that the woman's bloodline would eventually be wiped out.

Nice reaction guys! I think Carpenter would be so happy to see that his groundbreaking movie still has the capacity to scare people all these years later. Even though there is so much more gory, jumpy stuff nowadays, this builds the tension and has one of the most terrifying bad guys ever. It was interesting that BJ said, "That would be too cliché" because this was almost before the clichés were created! It's hokey in places for sure but to me, it's like listening to a great rock and roll album from many years ago. It set the scene for what followed.

A very good horror film to watch made by John Carpenter who did Halloween. I watched this in film class when I was in college. What John Carpenter did was caused the audience to use their imagination rather than do traditional jump scares. Plus, the kind of cameras used other films started to use it. You have to watch Halloween II. Plus, there are more sequels to this. There is a story to the films. I forgot to mention that John Carpenter wrote the song and performed it as well for the franchise. I know it's a different world now, but I grew up in the 50s and 60s, and we did not start locking our front door, and front door only, until the late 60s, and only at night. My parents left the car keys in the ignition of the car in the driveway. Kids stayed outside playing, until mothers would step out and yell for us to come in to eat. This was in the suburbs of LA, so yeah, the world has changed.

Asia & BJ, I would skip all the sequels from 1981's "Halloween 2" thru 2002's "Halloween: Resurrection" (as well as passing on Rob Zombie's versions in 2007 and 2009). The most recent Michael Myers timeline picks up with 2018 "Halloween" based on what you just saw from the 1978 movie. That way you'll be more up-to-date on the current franchise to watch 2020's "Halloween Kills" and eventually Oct. 14th, 2022's "Halloween Ends."

Thank you Asia and BJ for reacting to this movie. Fun Fact: The station wagon that Michael (The Shape) steals from Dr. Loomis and his nurse and then subsequently drives to and then around Haddenfield was a late model Ford LTD Country Squire station wagon probably brand new or fairly new at the time of making the movie in 1978. I would say it was probably a 77 or 78 model year. Anyway it turns out that the car was rented from a vehicle rental company for the making of the movie. I saw a video I believe on TH-cam that they recently located the car and proved by the VIN number and documentation that it was the exact car that was used in the movie but it was in horrible condition and the people that owned it had no idea the cinematic history they had on their hands and then the party that purchased the car restored it to it's original condition except for the power windows which were much harder to locate replacements for because the original power window wiring harness and hardware was not usable because the rodents had chewed on the wires while the car was in storage all those years so in that video they said they had to make it a manual window car. They also had planned to eventually convert it back to power windows and locks like it was in the movie. Just an interesting fun fact I thought you might like.

I promise you, in the suburbs in the midwest it was VERY COMMON to leave your front doors unlocked. While it wouldn't be normal to have your back door ajar (open), it wouldn't be something that would not be a big alram either.
Laurie thought that her friends were either trying to mess with her (Halloween night) or possibly in the bedrooms "fooling around".
I personally would have went back to the house I was babysitting at and waited for a call or the parents to come home. She probably didn't want to get her friends in trouble though.
P.S. Compared to present day, the 1960's & 70's were very trusting, especially in really good neighborhoods and in small cities.

Yes!! You watched my favorite horror movie of all time! This movie is iconic, an absolute classic, for so many reasons: the spot-on music, the fantastic performances of Donald Pleasance and Jamie Lee Curtis, the simplicity of the story, and the almost unbearable suspense and tension. Also, I love the lack of blood and gore, relying instead on that incredible tension and the viewer's imagination. Asia, you are my new favorite person to watch reacting to horror movies, with your jump scares and peeking through your fingers. 😄 And BJ, you have awesome comments; did you really say shucky ducky quack quack? 😂 That made my day!!
Okay, here is my opinion on which sequels to watch:
*Halloween II: a direct continuation of this one, picking right up the same night where this one left off. Not as good as this one, but still worth watching.
*Halloween H20: the best sequel, that really captures the spirit of the original, with the return of Jamie Lee Curtis and other great performances.
*Halloween (2018) and Halloween Kills: back-to-back movies that follow the timeline of the original, ignoring all the sequels and reboots, and again featuring Jamie Lee Curtis.
The rest of the sequels and reboots range from meh to bad to insultingly awful (Resurrection).
Have fun on your Halloween journey! Asia, I hope you survive the experience! 😁

Halloween is a classic! I remember being 6 or 7 years old, sitting in my Aunt’s bedroom and watching it all by myself! It scared the life out of me and gave me such a rush! I completely enjoyed it at a kid. Now Halloween completely changed the movie horror genre with the blue lighting background, the blank, emotionless face (mask) in which the director could project everything in him, to which there was no rhyme or reason as to why he was doing what he did. The lack of blood and gore was offset by the power of sound effects. This is probably one of the scariest movies that is triggered by sound effects alone. I’m glad you finally had an opportunity to experience it and this is truly my favorite movie of all time. Look at movies prior to Halloween and then how it affected how horror movies were made after. This completely changed it.

Great reaction you two...glad you enjoyed the orginal classic...often imitated (and even ripped off) but never duplicated. 🎃
TRIVIA - Due some of the more violent content and nudity not be able to be shown on national TV (due to FCC broadcasting regulations and network decency censorship), several scenes from the film had to be either re-edited (for the TV broadcasting standards) or removed entirely...However, with the changes made, the film's running time would have ran at an irregular shorter length than what the networks programming blocks (minus advertising/commercial time) wanted at the time. In order to fix that, director John Carpenter shot 12 minutes of new additional footage (with much of the orginal cast - due to the fact that Carpenter himself was also doing uncredited reshoots for Halloween II at the time as well in 1981) to fill in the missing gaps (and at the time - to also better connect Halloween II more directly with Carpenter's orginal film).
These additional scenes were shot by director John Carpenter for the 1981 television network premiere. They include:
*A meeting set in 1964 between Dr. Loomis and two doctors from the mental (psychiatric) institution where Michael Myers is being kept, where Dr. Loomis urges the doctors to keep him under maximum security but they don't see Michael as any kind of threat because he appears mostly catatonic, so they refuse. The scene ends with Loomis visiting young Michael in his hospital room and saying to him "You fooled them didn't you Michael...but not me".
*A scene after Michael's hospital escape, where a nurse leads Dr. Loomis to Michael's room, telling him who was supposed to have been watching all the patients that night but wasn't there at the post at the time when all the patients were released outside. Once they arrive in Michael's room, she tells him he must have broken the window glass with his bare hands. They then glance over on the wall, and see, written in blood, the word "sister". The nurse asks Loomis if Michael has been found yet, where Loomis replies "No...but I know where he's going".
*A scene (before Laurie leaves to go babysitting) where Lynda visits Laurie at home saying a "creepy guy in a station wagon has been following me", but they both look out the windows and they both don't see anything. Lynda then asks to borrow Laurie's new blouse just as Annie calls on the phone asking to borrow the same blouse. She lends the blouse to Lynda who says "I totally promise to take good care of it", as Laurie mumbles to herself "I totally don't believe you".
I will say to check out Halloween II (1981) also (and the other sequels as well if you wish) - because Halloween II takes place directly after Halloween (1978) ends and (the story) all occurs on the same night. ✌️
