  • Episode 307: Join kidney health coach James Fabin and renowned nephrologist Dr. Rosansky as they delve into the critical question: "Can you cure CKD?" In this essential discussion, we uncover the truth about kidney disease treatments. Discover what's scientifically proven and learn to identify dangerous fakes that could harm your health. Whether you're seeking ways to manage your condition or just curious about kidney health, this video is your ultimate guide to understanding CKD treatments. Don't miss out on expert insights that could change the way you manage kidney health!
    Discussion Points:
    1. False Cures:
    * Dr. Rosansky and I highlight the danger of miracle cures often promoted online.
    * We stress that many of these so-called cures are scams designed to exploit vulnerable patients.
    2. Understanding Kidney Disease:
    * Dr. Rosansky, a retired nephrologist with extensive experience, explains that kidney disease typically isn't symptomatic in its early stages (stages 1 and 2).
    * He discusses the variability of kidney function tests and why two tests are necessary for a CKD diagnosis.
    3. Protein in Urine:
    * We talk about how the amount of protein in your urine is a crucial indicator of kidney disease progression.
    * Treatments that reduce protein in the urine, such as ACE inhibitors and ARBs, are vital in slowing disease progression.
    4. Misleading Information:
    * Dr. Rosansky and I debunk common misconceptions, like the idea that certain foods or supplements can cure kidney disease.
    * We caution against herbal supplements, which are unregulated and can contain harmful substances.
    5. Realistic Approaches:
    * We discuss legitimate medical strategies, including proper medication management, diet, and lifestyle changes.
    * Dr. Rosansky advocates for a balanced protein diet and regular exercise to maintain muscle mass and overall health.
    6. Medication Insights:
    * We talk about the benefits and initial side effects of medications like ACE inhibitors, ARBs, and SGLT2 inhibitors, which are essential in managing CKD and reducing cardiovascular risk.
    7. Acute Kidney Injury (AKI):
    * We cover the concept of AKI, emphasizing that it can often be reversed with proper treatment and doesn't necessarily indicate chronic kidney failure.

Hi James and Dr Ro! Thank you both for everything that you do, you are angels from above helping us CKD patients win the battle against this horrible disease. Now that most of these videos has talked about stage 3(I’m stage 5, eGFR is 7, significant protein in the urine not on dialysis) cures and myths, we understand how most of them shouldn’t be worrying as much as the “experts” told them to be. I think you’ve discussed enough about it. How about in the future shows, you talk about the cure and tips for us. People who ACTUALLY NEED help. Focus more on People at stage 4-5. Thank you.

Stages 4 and 5 are the same tips, but they make less of an impact as your eGFR gets lower - focus on reducing protein in the urine, controlling blood pressure, staying active, eating a heart-healthy diet, take your medications as prescribed by your doctor.

Hi my mom is 65 and has high blood pressure and diabetes she had blood work done and was told she is at 15% kidney use. This is all new to us and she is freaking out that nothing can be done and that she will have to be put on dialysis. Any positive stories or information would be appreciated.

Will my kidney disease did nothing but get worse over the course of 6 to 7 years when I tried every diet from vegetarian to vegan and standard american. Then I went ketogenic and guess what? I didn't notice any improvements right away with my kidneys I think it was too soon out of 4 week lab tests however my nephrologist and physician were happy that my kidneys weren't tanking and my other labs were improving so they told me to continue I continued only I told them I was dropping the vegetables and eating carnivore otherwise known as zero carb which made them Panic all over again but they brought me back for weeks later tested my labs saw further Improvement in everything I no longer was diabetic I didn't have any other of my serious health problems my hypothyroidism reversed a bunch of things reversed I came off of 13 prescribed medications and even improved my blood pressure and then I continued with carnivore and eventually I ended up having stage 2 kidney disease with a filtration rate of 70 at age 53. So for me zero carb works or carnivore no Ultra processed foods I've always been obese so that is a struggle I know it's not good for my kidneys but I lose weight when I managed to stick to my crazy meat diet so at any rate I have seen a bunch of people in the carnivore community that have reversed their chronic kidney disease and taking it back to Stage 2 even from a Stage 5 so you can fix it

Yeah, I am curious as to what DR Ro’s can say about your situation. I’ve been wanting to go carnivore but since we were taught since childhood that red meat is bad for kidneys, we just believed so. If you don’t mind, how long have you been on a carnivore diet and how that made you feel and or affect your health? Please do share. Thank you. For James, please kindly ask Dr Ro about this.

My hubby, stage 4, went on ketovore diet...mostly meat based. In 6 months his GFR went from 27 to 21 and his creatine went from 2.46 to 2.97, and his BUN from 53 to 65. So no, don't promote the carnivore diet to treat CKD. So many variables to consider i.e. age, fitness level, comorbidities etc.

Also this physician here your nephrologist that you're interviewing ask him if it's true I've heard that today they push people through on dialysis way too fast because it's a money-making operation on the machines and that if they would just slow down people would live a lot longer even while they're on dialysis. So I wonder if that is the true thing my kidneys are still a stage 2 filtration rate dropped from 70 to 66 but my creatinine is still 0.9 and my bun is fine you can reverse your kidney disease in some cases depending on the cause

Calm down! It took me 10 years ago from stage 3 to stage five 5. I spent too many years wondering when I was going to drop dead and I'm still wondering. They wanted to get me ready for dialysis over a year ago and I refused thank God or I'd have a tube coming out of my tummy right now.

I have heard that cumin is good for kidney fuction.
But it needs to be taken with black pepper, in order to get it into the blood stream .
That if cumin is not taken with black pepper cummin will stay in the stomack and it helps the flora in the stomack, but it needs to get into the blood stream

My EGFR has been 40-45 for a few years and my kidney doctor told me at my last appointment, I should learn about the dialysis because my EGFR is not correct because I don't have too much mussels. My labs don't read correctly. What is your opinion? Thanks for your information.

    • @DADVICETV
      @DADVICETV  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

There is some truth to that - if you have a lot of muscle loss, your labs won’t be correct using creatinine to estimate your kidney function. There is another test, more expensive, that the doctor can order to beget an estimate of your kidney function. Low muscle mass can lead to many other issues, so I encourage you to speak to your doctor about how to address that. once you have a good estimation, you can decide if it’s time to start considering dialysis. The latest recommendation is to start dialysis around a GFR of five unless there are other serious issues that put you at risk. it sounds like you’re far from that point. Dr. Rosansky has done many videos with me talking about when to start dialysis and the data showing that starting early *usually* is the wrong decision.
