I just inherited a very similar stove to yours I live in Dartmouth Mass I contacted the stove doctor which the gentleman you're talking about he's in Little Compton Rhode Island. He's restoring mine as we speak. Very old school very very nice people you'll be in good hands if you deal with him. Good luck with your project

I have worked on a few woodstoves.
.i take them apart. Sometimes the bolts break off but they are easily replaced. Sometimes I had to cut them off with a saws-all.
I wire-brush the parts with a wire-wheel in a drill. Then I put a couple of coats of high heat bbq grill paint on the parts so they don't immediately start rusting again.
Don't over tighten the nuts when you re-assemble it.. Give it room to expand and contract as it heats and cools i think that's how most parts get cracked or broken.
One fellow stove restorer uses a high temp gasket material between the parts.
I have a like new four burner stove
That I want to take apart and put gasket material in before I fire it up.
I will have to find a source for double lined stainless steel stove pipe for
the going through the attic part of the installation.
    Lots of fun restoring stoves.
    Thanks for the video

In an off grid situation, hot water off the stove will be great for hot baths on cold days

Thanks for the tip on the antique stove restorers! I just bought an old Home Comfort in very rough condition for $150. The guy claimed he’d been using it in his cabin until recently, but we’ll see. It’s going to need a lot of work to get it back to usable condition

Iv seen people with those types of wood stove hook those pipes up to a cast iron radiator and that hot water somehow will flow through the radiator and transfer heat

The water heater worked much like a car radiator. The cold water intake was on top and the hot water came out the bottom..

Great video. How hard was it to disasemble the stove? I have to partially disasemble one to make it light enough to get it across a lake and up a hill to a lake access cottage.

It actually came apart fairly easy. Some rusted nuts and bolts but that was to be expected.

How do you refurbish the rust off of the outside with out adding paint that will just burn away or oil that will smoke like crazy?

    • @larrywillis475
      @larrywillis475  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

High temperature stove paint, applying 3-4 times. All stoves are painted initially.

I have to say, I really appreciate the approach you are taking to this restoration. The "restorations" that are all about looks but not actual usability (like ice-boxes that look nice but are just glorified cupboards) rub me the wrong way for some reason.

I would leave the water heater in its original to the stove

1892? Pittston "Happy Thought" cook stove

If the person you get to weld it is any good you won't even be able to tell it was welded!! Use nickle rods.

You’ll probably find it extremely dry in a very large area without that water tank, unless of course that’s what you’re going for
