    For people continuously saying "build a gaming pc," yall should know that this video is for people who already have a MacBook, and don't have the money to buy another entire machine solely for the purpose of "gaming," which is already a waste of time. People with macs create, develop, and design. Its the reason why most developers have macs, along with all designers, filmmakers, and other professionals. The software that is exclusively available on mac is meant to appeal to such people, not gamers. Don't y'all realize that the ads that Microsoft make to promote their products never involve gaming performace, but durability, design, and convenience for professionals and creators, not gamers. They're trying to appeal to the community of creators and developers, mainly because most of us have macs. Windows lacks tons of software that mac has exclusively dedicated to devs and creators.
    Gaming - WIndows all the way.
    Design, Develop, Create, Convenience, Exclusive Software (App Store, etc.), Security, ETC... - MAC

      more like people who had to deal with unix couldn't be bothered buying a windows machine, uninstall windows then install linux and have to worry about hardware compatibility issues also system tuning...instead just buy a mac, its hardware in general is underperformed for the money you spend comparing to a windows machine, but it's fine-tuned and robust....I was impressed the first time I got my hands on a macbook pro then I never went back to the nightmare of trying to install ubuntu on a gaming laptop which has hardware compatibility issue.

      PC can also be well-tuned and robust only if the users know what they're doing...there are plenty computer scientists/engineers living on PC platform, also most of scientific instruments only talk to windows for reasons

    I can't wait till this becomes more mainstream and I'd be able to use an external GPU on my MacBook pro as well as my desktop. Just unplug and replug depending on which computer needs the egpu at the moment.

      why would this become mainstream macs just fucking suck. I used over 10 Linux distros in my life. Some even that weren't stable and all had more functionality than a stupid macbook pro. How is it even called a pro when it runs on internal graphics. Linux is freedom. Windows is the best OS for convenience and compatibility. A mac is just good at nothing. All I can hear is people saying blabla final cut blazing fast blabla. That's software not an operating system. People buy a macbook just for one program that's absurd. It reminds me of those people buying medication for 30 USD when they can get the generic one for a dollar. That's the mindset of Apple users. Brand is everything.

      Robin Clarijs For what exactly do you need "freedom" when all you do is surf the internet, use iWork, write and read Mails and use some power Programms like Final Cut or Logic? Why do I need an OS that sucks and almost no Apps are optimized for? Why?
      Too make everything as complicated as possible and to have "freedom" that essential does nothing. Great.

    Buying a 1080 ti for a egpu setup is stupid since you are not able to transfer it's full potential with the thunderbold 3 port anyway. You better run with a 1060 or 1070. You'll get almost the same performance for a fraction of the price...

    • @ccolon83
      @ccolon83 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      How is it that thunderbolt 3 cant take full advantage of a 1080? From what I read its the fastest connection on the market, at least for external devices.

      DISAGREE,the performance loss can be cut down to 5% running at 4k resolution on a external display, given that not as much data are being transferred when the frame rate is around 60 FPS. Moreover, performance loss is more like locked to a certain percentage using egpu. It is not like your 1080 would be like 1060 and your 1060 remains to be 1060, but rather both of them suffering a 20% loss. So you actually want to have a card that's as powerful as possible

      Also, please let us know which one FCPX prefers for rendering & playback, AMD or Nvidia? And how do these both companies perform with Premiere Pro in windows & Mac OS!
      I know it's a very difficult and long test to do. But it will be best all in one eGPU test for video editors.

      I've tested eGPU using Quadro in earlier 2015, before all those fancy enclosure exists, I did test for 3D, Color Grading, Video Editing and Compositing, It performed significantly well on PC eGPU with mPCIe Gen2 or ExpressCard.
      On Mac i use NGFF, it gain performance, but not much. It might depends on your workflows and CPU as well.
      Macs with ATI or Intel Iris are only optimized for OpenCL, and Metal, even if you select 'Enable untrusted CUDA device'
      Not sure if the script will help boost eGPU CUDA performance
      If you would like to know deep down about the real eGPU, go to techinferno forum.
      They are the pioneers and experts for eGPU since 2010 both for Mac and PC.

I already have a gaming PC with an i7-6700K and a GTX 1080 but planning on getting a 1080 Ti for my PC, and putting my old 1080 on my eGPU setup for my 15" MBP with Touch Bar. I've always wanted to consolidate my PCs into one, and having my Mac as my daily driver, and having my enclosure with an SSD, GTX 1080, and charging capabilities is just insane.

    This is so beautiful. A lot of people argue about the price of this setup but I think it's worth it. You can potentially have the most powerful desktop graphics card for your laptop with only a minimal performance loss.

    • @simonknoll6999
      @simonknoll6999 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      touchtapgo It's at Least a third to half the performance going to waste right here. You literally waste 400$... But lower end cards can make sense

    • @touchtapgo
      @touchtapgo 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I disagree. Remember he is using beta drivers. This setup works for creators, video editors, 3D modeling and more. An editor can use this egpu setup instead of breaking down and setting up a full desktop computer when you move to new locations or clients. A student can use the MacBook for school and leave the AKiTiO Node at home for gaming. This is beautiful. I don't see MacBooks getting any thicker anytime soon so we may never see desktop graphics in a light and portable laptop. this is long overdue and I have to commend Akitio for including a power supply and making this compatible with pc and Mac.

  • @eymantia
    @eymantia 7 ปีที่แล้ว +15

    No offense dude, but you're just bottlenecking the 1080Ti by using a 13-inch Macbook Pro, with a reasonable clocked dual core that is surely thermal throttling under the load.

    • @remo6158
      @remo6158 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Elijah Nation not to mention that thunderbolt 3 still bottlenecks the card as well

      @eymantia 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh yeah, that too

    • @eymantia
      @eymantia 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You do bring up a valid point. Quadro does have much better OpenGL firmware optimization than Geforce, as most professional apps still have yet to switch over to DX, and Mac But that does not make the other points invalid. These issues of the CPU almost certainly bottlenecking the graphics card, the TB3 interface further bottlenecking the card at PCI-e bandwidth of only 8 lanes, not 16 as you would find on at least the first slot of a Z270, X99, X299, X399, B350 (etc.) motherboard, and finally, the fact that the current Mac drivers for Nvidia 10-series suck, are still very much present. While your point is correct, mine and Remo's points are too. Also, seeing as all points mentioned, including yours, are completely correct, I am not just a retarded Windows gamer who doesn't have any idea what he is talking about. I wish thee a farewell and a good day.

    Yes, I would consider an eGPU for my TB2 2015 15" MBP, but only if the price was reasonable and I could get noticeably performance gains not only in FCPX but also in Compressor and in other pro apps. I don't really have any need for boosting game performance. Furthermore, having an eGPU work on the MBP's internal display in MacOS (not boot camp) is preferred. I look forward to see the other video you promised pertaining to the cheaper card.

    I work on deep learning / neural networks and need a powerful GPU to run Google's Tensorflow, which uses nVidia's CUDA. Can you please try to run some CUDA computational benchmarks, and if possible Tensorflow itself? I'm not looking for video graphics performance but rather GPU CUDA computational performance.

    I have a similar setup with a 2017 13 inch MacBook Pro and I was trying to run bootcamp windows with an akitio node but here’s the problem. My internal display just becomes a black screen with a windows symbol in the middle, sometimes flickering. I was just wondering how to have the internal display work with my external display and have my gtx 1050ti work with both my external and internal display.

  • @airbusisawesome

    The difference may be in the drivers, but that's not the whole story by any means. The bulk of the difference is how each OS handles graphics. For games in Windows, DirectX (pretty sure the current version is DirectX 12) is used. MacOS uses Metal, an API developed by Apple and optimized for the AMD GPUs that Apple builds into its higher-end machines. Nvidia GPUs use a processor technology called CUDA that simply processes things differently than AMD's "stream processor" technology. Metal and Apple's optimization are why you'll get kickass performance with an AMD GPU when running Final Cut Pro. DirectX is why you'll get kickass performance in games in Windows. You won't get good performance in games in MacOS because games in MacOS use OpenGL and OpenCL, which simply aren't as well optimized as DirectX. I'd like to see how the 1080ti performs doing 3D rendering in programs like Blender in MacOS. Nvidia's CUDA is known to be great for rendering stuff (which is why it's also great for people who use Adobe's Premier Pro.) There's just too much to summarize in a 6:22 video, frankly. And I think the result is people down here in the comment section complaining about how they feel their OS of choice is superior, and other people saying the CPU is bottlenecking it (which is somewhat true,) and other people just being rude.

    The reason you are getting such choppy playback is because you are using a 13 inch model. Essentially you're getting a dual core CPU. The games you tested need atleast a quad core CPU so a 15 inch model would perform better.

    • @9to5Mac
      @9to5Mac  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Ahmad Muhammad \\ Horses, Games, and more Yes, but it's primarily the beta drivers... if that were true I'd get choppy performance on windows as well. I know that quad core increases performance, but that's not the reason for the discrepancy in this case
