- How much sense does a Thunderbolt eGPU make for Laptops and Mini PCs?
Testing it with a GTX 1070ti and an RTX 4070.
Get this eGPU from Ali Express.

looking at 6:35, considering that intel's e-cores dont always get used in games (yet they count towards CPU utilization), its possible that the game is CPU limited and not bandwidth limited. Did you do any tests on this, like lowering the resolution to see if performance increased? Id love to know!
Yepp I did, not CPU limited.
The 125H "only" is an i5, but it's not the limiting factor here.
Can you use more than one video card for AI training with this setup (maybe creating a multi video card rig)?
Thanks for your answer!
Great video and interesting topic. Something that might definitely increase lifespan of laptops with thunderbolt 5.
Only thing that would be really nice is that in game comparison you included full powered 4070 from your PC too.
But still nice finding!
Thanks, man I have the same setup gmktech k8 and was looking for a cheap egpu as I have a spare 1060 6GB.
Thank you so much for this review. I'm keeping an eye on this product on Aliexpress for couple weeks Now. I've a Maxed Out Macbook with i9 and 64gb of Ram, Since I use a lot of 3d programs I'm evaluating an Nvidia Gpu to work on Bootcamp. Does this Enclosure support Power Delivery on the TB3 port?
Oh I honestly don't know. I would have to check on that...
Good Video and good testing :)
Only thing You should also consider ist testing on 1440p. Besides the bandwith limitation are lower resoultions more cpu bound while higher resolutions are using more the gpu.
It's possible that You see a better performance with the RTX 4070 egpu closer to the desktop at 1440p.
with oculink definitely closer, tb4 or usb just not, tested this with gpd g1 at 1080p which have lower performance than 4070ti
difference between oculink and usb4 is like night and day
I love the idea of eGPUs. But even Occulink will have a bad bottleneck. We gotta wait until Thunderbolt 5 is a mainstream feature, and not a Razer Blade 18 exclusive.
Thunderbolt 5 will be 120gbps on displays only but on pcie connections/ egpu it will be 64 gbps so its the same as oculink. 👍
@@D2firetech Defeats the purpose of TB5? People are perfectly fine using displayport.
I was saying I only reached 64 gbps on pcie connections.
TB5 will be garbage obviously. We must wait for TB(N+1) always
Nothing stops manufacturers from implementing oculink 2.0 (pcie4) even with x8 connectivity.
Would this work with a discreet card?
Thank you so much for your great guide for this Topic.
I have a silly question, if I use two thunderbolt 4s (assuming wikingoo has to thunderbolt ports) would performance increase ?
Thats depend your cpu, If you have highend cpu Which can handle dual gpu, the performance of gpu will double(in term you use dual gpu), But you should remember this, use two gpu without necessary knowledge is disaster, I don't recommend that unless you have proper skill for do that
Great review, please cover more affordable egpu docks
Always love it when you upload
Somehow I can always purchase what you review in my country
This is definitely on my radar! I bought a gigabyte aorus laptop you reviewed last year, and it comes with a thunderbolt connection. Buying the dock will definitely make it last
Hi,
Thanks a lot forthe video! Are you planning to test an eGPU with OCuLink and compare results with TB3/TB4 and desktop installation?
Need a oculink capable device first 😅
@@Hubwoodthere are plenty of cheap nvme to oculink adapters and there are egpu boxes oculink compatible (for around the same price).
@@johntoto5496 yeah I know but the nvme solution is not a solution to most people. Involves opening the laptop... Blocking an nvme port... Beeping ugly and uncomfortable... Not being flexible when you actually need to transport your laptop often etc.
Finally! An affordable Egpu dock!! ❤
Thanks again mate :)
@@Hubwooddo you think the gpu dock will work if i use a 3080 with my 4050 laptop? Will it mess with the drivers?
No, you can use the same drivers 👍
Brother, what software you use for screen recording?
OBS via a capture card on a seperate PC
@@Hubwood Okay, Thank you very much♥️
What about connecting miniPCIe or M.2 PCIe directly to your GPU?
Your laptop's power supply can't power the laptop and the gpu at the same time
Can you tell me how much will cost its price in Bangladesh. I had a laptop hp 250 G9 with i3 12gen processor Dose will it work
You can order it for the same price over the link with AliExpress
Can you do a legion go tutorial please 🙏🥺🙏
For the mini PC, what about the 1070ti in your PC? This way to see if the difference is as huge as with the 4070. Basically at what point there is the sweetspot for what GPU to use and not lose too much performance.
I like USB 4, but I feel like an occulink or whatever USB5 will be, would be more worth it.
Now, can we get one, closed too, for this price? :)
Some loss but not as big as fit the 4070. Thinking the sweet spot might be around RTX 3060 / 2070 / RX 6700 / 7600
@@Hubwood Thank you.
I’m waiting for razerblade rtx 5090 with thunderbolt 5
Man, from what i have heard u can be losing fps bc u not using the oculink cable or at list a connection in the m2 port, thunderbolt is easier to connect but u lose fps
Hello sir so we don need to open laptop and connect it and also it is directl connected to port without going process of m.2?
Correct.
@@Hubwood thank you sir appreciate to your response i have lenovo IdeaPad slim 3 not a gaming one and i have budget for amd 5600xt or 1050ti will it work on it?
@@draadi6603 Does your Lenovo IdeaPad slim 3 have Thunderbolt? Then it will work.
The 5600XT is MUCH faster than the 1050ti by the way.
You should text oculink devices next
40gb bandwidth is larger than pcie 3.0 x16 isn't it?
No no no. You're mixing up GigaBYTE with GigaBIT ;)
PCIE 3.0 x16 is faster :)
Will this work with ryzen laptops ?
If they have usb 4 it CAN work.
Enter shikari 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Noob disclaimer. Can you connect the gpu output directly to the monitor and if you can, does that help with performance?
That is the preferred method. If you still use the output from the main machine, you need to send the signal back through the Thunderbolt/USB port, thus consuming more of the limited bandwidth you need for the GPU.
So always use the output from the GPU you are using
Is this safe for any laptop?
Yes. It's not dangerous. But the laptop needs Thunderbolt or USB 4.
can i use that on rog ally x?
Will Test that probably next week ;)
@@Hubwood imma push that notification then
yes the ally x now comes with one usb4 port with display port 1.4
Damn this is really cheap compared to a razer core x or hp omen accelerator
Oculink is the only way that makes sense to run an EGPU in 2024. That or an Asus Flow/XG Mobile combo if you're made out of money.
Yeah oculink is a bit better but less common
...
@@Hubwood Minisforum seems to include them more and more often these days. Love their designs (even though after sales support is supposedly terrible...)

Here in europe it cost 150$. :0/
It's on sale often
It’s $100
Clickbait title tho 😂
Whats next ecpu? Then ememory and eventually everything will be external 😂
That's a nice idea but I think cpus need more bandwidth due to how much of the motherboard cpus use so maybe🤔
