      Also, the highpoint “hardware” nvme raid controllers are NOT hardware raid. They are essentially just a non-raid adapter card that comes with a highpoint branded software raid system. These cards require a driver to use the raid. Hardware raid does not require software on the host to work.

    Format 1 SSD in the PS/5 and check it in your pc to see which filesystem it is using. Populate the Highpoint controller with all 4 SSDs in your pc and format it to the same filesystem that the PS/5 is using. If that is possible because the PS/5 might be using a (l)inux filesystem. Maybe that helps.

      @@tedbybolf4616 The drives are most definitely using encryption, they have been doing so since PS3 and is a necessity in its security against people running unsigned code. As for the file system well they used UFS (Unix File System) on the PS3 and PFS (Playstation File system) on the PS4 which is their own closed FS based off UFS. On the PS5 they are most likely continuing usage of PFS which obviously non-Sony systems won't natively support, at best the hacking & homebrew community may come up with their own software to access the file system assuming you can somehow get the appropriate encryption keys.

  • @danielschulz4930

    Here's a hacky way to do it. Your plan to load the RAID drivers on the PC was good. Now find the power pins on the M.2 plug, disconnect them electrically from the PS5, and rewire it to take external voltage from the PSU. Then you can transfer it without the card powering down.

    • @killacovertops
      @killacovertops 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      This could work but really could just patch in power to the card or somehow makeshift a mirror cable so they transmit the same connection and power both ways that way when you take it out of the pc it will be powered still loaded and you can just turn on the ps5.

    • @ThisRandomUsername
      @ThisRandomUsername 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Good idea. You may have to manually get a separate 12V to 3V3 regulator put on the card for that if that circuitry is enabled by the PCI input power. It's also possible an enable line needs to be pulled low, but I don't see that on the pinout for NVMe or PCIe.

    They likely use a proprietary uid assignment protocol, together with a proprietary filesystem, much like an 🍎pad. If that's true, then the gpu would be recognized as a drive (consequently the memory controller would activate and dump a bunch of memory addresses, waiting for another component to implement the uid assignment and read the addresses).

    Since it is "hardware" based raid...the jumper settings choosing the raid "configuration" will need to be pre-set. prior to boot (raid-5 suggestion). As I was watching i noticed that the m.2 cards were risen off of the raid card. You must make sure all m.2 cards are of the same type as well as all attachments are PCIe 4.0 compliant; have no volume on them (unpartitioned) and install all 4 of those drives with the screws on them which flattens them closer to the raid card for a "solid" connection. BTW it should work. I have a ps4 pro with 8tb (2tb x4 drives) configured in raid-5 off of the internal sata using a sata to e-sata cable plugged into a 4 bay raid external powered box with perfect results now for 2yrs. Cheers...

    If that's a proper RAID card, you'll need to initialise it first - using a PC. The config for the card will be stored either in non volatile RAM or on the drives themselves. I work with RAID every day of the week. Put it in the PC, set your uefi bios to show legacy cards, and there will be a keyboard shortcut to enter the card config. B from there, create Volume using all the 4 ssds.
    Once you've done all that, saved it all etc, connect back to the ps5. Because only THEN will that pci-e card "look" like a "drive" to what it's plugged into.
    Of course, because of the RAID BIOS on the card, the ps5 might still ignore it.
    And like others say, m.2 and PciE the same, do it could just be a pciE switch, passing all the Ssds to the inboard controllers, leaving you no further forward either.
    Try make it work in a pc like it's meant to FIRST though, otherwise how can you know it's the ps5 at fault!

    Question, did you ever try the Radeon with the HDMI connected to it when you powered on the system?
    Back in the day Windows wouldn't activate the secondary GPU without a cable connected, considering you're trying something completely oddball (which I did ask for, so thanks), it may not activate the GPU unless it is connected at power on.
    Not expecting it to work but it's an old hardware/software limitation, simply swapping the cable while it's running was actually likely to fail even if it did otherwise enable the Radeon.

    doesn't the raid card use the power it receives over the pci express lane as a signal to power on or off, to keep the fan from spinning? I suppose if you jumpwire the same voltage to that pin, the raid card won't shut down.
    I would cut the wire so no power goes to the ps5 and maybe put a resistor to ground at the wire coming from the ps5's express lane power pin.

    You wouldn't be able to move a PCIe device (i.e. a NVMe SSD) from one host to another without powering it down. The reason being that when the host boots up, the BIOS initializes the PCIe device (e.g. setting up the BAR mapping which maps the device to system memory). If you were to transfer it without re-initialization, then the values in the BARs would be incorrect and the second host wouldn't have mapped it to the respective system memory. So at best, nothing would happen, at worst, it could corrupt your system state (if two devices response to a given PCI address).
    I don't have any suggestion though to get something like this to work. Someone could probably implement a custom hardware solution that doesn't require driver initialization, but that would be very niche with a limited market - so it wouldn't be cost effective for a company to produce and would be very expensive it it was (probably over $4,000 USD using a custom FPGA - it could bank and forward the NVMe commands to respective sub-PCIe slots, but that's not a trivial thing to do).

    Cool video regardless. However, my initial thoughts on what all your doing is, it would never work, because you're trying to use x16 devices on an x4 slot. At a minimum, you would likely have to get a card that handles Bifurcation on the board, while only requiring an x4 slot. I don't know of any. I got an ASM2824 / SI-PEX40157 card on eBay to solve this issue on a board which didn't support Bifurcation, but it's still an x16 slot card. Is your m.2 to PCIex16 slot adapter actually using the x16 in total, or is it just a physical x16 with only connectivity to x4? I would think the latter.

      PS5 is happy to format an SSD it recognizes into own proprietary format. If it does recognize an SSD and it is NOT formatted into own format, it will show a promt on startup to either format SSD or shut down itself for removing an SSD.

    The only hardware raid that maybe work is a m.2 drive that has a raid 0, but it'll be all in one package, I don't know if anything like that exist, I have a old pci sdd that has a hardware raid solution, but as I said is all in one package, and you cannot put any other drive.

    Did you try to play games with the GPU plugged in? Even if the display output isn't being used, it's possible that the PS5 would still use the GPU for compute, if the drivers recognize the card...

    your going to have to jail break your ps5 to install linux. That is going to flash your ps5 to the new operating system or IOS so save or copy your old flash so you can bring it back.

    Will the highpoint work without any drivers on a PC? If not then it seems like a lost cause. If it does, maybe speak with Wendell at level1techs maybe he can hook up some pci-e sniffer to figure out what is wrong

    • @hawkeyede9441
      @hawkeyede9441 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes it should but, he foregot to create a volume on the highpoint with a ssd, or all four first. He must do this in a pc first. I doubt the PS5 OS boots the ROM from Highpoint, then the Raid-Controller presents the PS5 with a drive(aka as the volume on the controller) that it can use like a ssd. The driver then is only needed for Windows to get the best experience out the HW. One will have still acces to the Volume/Drive in safe mode where Windows doesnt load the driver but uses its generic drive-driver. Same should/could work for the PS5. But having no Volume on the highpoint, is like putting an empty NVME Slot-thingy in the PS5, there is simply no drive.

  • @bolondcat
    @bolondcat 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    you maybe mismatch the pci-e lanes and gens , the ps5 nvme port (every nvme port have 4 lanes in normal situation ) is pci-e gen4 with 4 lanes , for that raid card need 16 physical lanes, 4 lanes each nvme drive and the controller make a raid between the 4x4 lanes so in this way absolutly not working of course , your riser have 4 lanes from the nvme adapter , and your pci-e slot size same like a 16 lanes slot but electricaly just 4 lanes have in that port , if find somewhere(maybe nowhere) a 4 to 16 lanes plx controlled extension ( like a 1 to 4 port in mining plx) maybe with that work but that chips not already have pci-e gen4 compatibility (used on bigger mother boards for the multi gpu setups in the older generations pc with pci-e gen2-3) or the lanes can split up 1-1-1-1 up/downlink and lose the port speed and stability , and should by the PS OS not working in splitted pci-e bifurcation mode (need software compatibility).

    Motherboards with built in graphics that have a video card also installed will default to the onboard graphics if that is what's plugged into the monitor on power on. The true way to test a graphics card in the extender would be to power up the ps5 with the graphics card plugged into the monitor, not the ps5's on board hdmi

      Where would the ps5 get the drivers

    • @drewski10
      @drewski10 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Chris-dy1cb drivers for amd video cards a similar across multiple different designations using the same chipset (rx6600, rx6700, rx6800). While the ps5's video card is unique it may be similar enough to another dedicated graphics cards base chipset to still initialize a different graphics card from amd. Regardless of the graphics card being used (interal as based on the ps5 dedicated graphics) there have to be drivers for it to work so the ps5 os has drivers... just need to find the right dedicated graphics card that will work with those drivers - which may be impossible but regardless would still require the dedicated graphics card to be plugged in on bootup rather that the embedded video card

  • @irdmoose
    @irdmoose 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    Sony can be as unhappy with this video as they want, it doesn't change the fact that you have the right to do with YOUR PS5 whatever you choose. With their garbage suit against Dbrand, I'm never going to buy one anyway. With that said, Sony and Xbox probably use proprietary formats. I would try using a linux-based disk cloning tool like DD to rip an image of a single SSD and populate the array with that image. That might also work on the Xbox... FOR SCIENCE!
