    Hey everyone! This is an update to last year's video. We added a bunch of new scenes throughout the whole video, a new intro, last year's winner, and this year's nominees. Hope you enjoy it!
    Also let us know who you think will win this year! Deepwater Horizon, Doctor Strange, The Jungle Book, Kubo and the Two Strings, or Rogue One: A Star Wars Story??

    • @andynguyen3271

      Why u didnt add new winner in the last clip? I thought TH-cam support editing clip ?

      Kubo and Jungle Book have both had an insane amount of effort put into achieving their final results (fully realized stop-motion world versus convincing 100% CGI world interacted with by actual human). I know a tie is possible so that's what I'm rooting for.

    • @TechnologicallyTechnical
      @TechnologicallyTechnical 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** Way, Kubo is stop motion? What the fuck? Shit, I take it back, Kubo's got it in the bag. If it doesn't win the nomination, that's a crime against humanity.

    Ex- Machina looks great here but when you´re aware that was the same year when Mad Max: Fury Road, The Revenant, SW TFA, were nominated, it look like the wild card.

    • @LautFErrotabere
      @LautFErrotabere 7 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      love The Revenant effects. But because of the fast work of vfx behind scenes of Ex Machina and the prolixity of them, it deserved the award in my opinion.

    • @mrcraggle
      @mrcraggle 7 ปีที่แล้ว +28

      I thought a lot of the effects in TFA looked pretty bad. Snoke and Maz Kanata are both very underwhelming and just look so obviously out of place. Rogue One was vastly superior and it isn't even a main entry in the series.
      While a film's budget shouldn't dictate a winner of this award, the fact that Ex-Machina was able to achieve what it did with such a limited budget is rather commendable.

    • @VoLCoMzYaDiGG
      @VoLCoMzYaDiGG 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yea, snoke was a bit wonky, so was Maz. Idk why they had others like Unkar Plutt (Simon Pegg), those guys with the ship that Flynn is about to get on with, etc were all practical or mostly practical. I think even the ships were special effects. Which is a shame cause the ships in rogue one looked much cooler.

      I don't thing they quite nailed the photorealistic look they were aiming for but it got very close and it was very ambitious of them. Life of Pi's tiger will always be my favorite VFX animal ever and Jungle Book failed to achieve that level of quality here and there. But I agree it got the cake for this year.

    *The Jungle Book has the edge right now, having won the Critics Choice VFX award last December as well as (5) awards from the VFX guild just a few days ago. However, even if it wins the BAFTA this weekend, I wouldn't be surprised if the Academy tosses this year's award to Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.*

    Great idea. Nice to see some of the classics getting some screen time on youtube.. So much great, and memorable work. I do feel that you have short changed some of the movies in terms of the footage shown.
    The Rains Came, which was I believe the first movie to be awarded an Oscar for Visual Effects. That year the competition included ´The Wizard of Oz´and ´Gone With the Wind´. There is excellent model and optical work in the movie which is not shown in the clip.
    Wonder Man - has excellent split screen effects, also not shown.
    The Guns of Navarone has an excellent storm sequence involving miniature and full size boat running aground.
    Cleopatra - no vfx in this clip... understandable given the threadbare effects in the movie (same year as Jason and the Argonauts (not nominated) and The Birds).
    Mary Poppins - the live action wire work... not any of the beautiful matte paintings or the ´chalk painting sequence´.
    Thunderballl... another unlikely winner. But what about the impressive full scale Disco Volante sequence?
    2001 - The stargate sequence is awesome, but some of the Blue Danube or Dawn of Man scenes too would be nice
    The Hindenburg - some of the best matte paintings ever put on film.....this clip is not the most representative
    Star Wars and The Empire Strikes Back and E.T I think... (clips form the 1990s updated versions)...
    Raiders of the Lost Ark - no VFX in this clip... the boulder scene, a great iconic special effect, but hardly what clinched the oscar
    Return of the Jedi - so much great work in that movie - the forest walker battle, Speeder Bike chase, Space Battle, Jabba the Hutt
    Aliens - this sequence features intercutting between excellent miniatures and impressive full scale alien queen and power loader.
    What May Dreams May Come - the remarkable, ´Oscar worthy´ effect was the ´´painted world´´, surely that would be THE clip

    Having seen all but Deepwater Horizon, I gotta say that the nominations are really damn strong this year.
    If I'm honest though, I kinda hope that The Jungle Book doesn't win since it seems to cover the whole spectrum of how it's CGI looks.
    It looks completely real, then not real but cool, then a little off, then you're just aware that it's a bunch of CG. And it goes back and forth between these.

    The problem I have with VFX Oscars is that the winners aren't voted by people who understand VFX so they usually vote for the movie they most enjoyed and not the one who actually deserves to win.

      We definitely try to pull shots that not only showcase some of the landmark effects that made the films standout (and subsequently win), but also what we consider our favorites and what we feel are some of the most iconic. Thanks for watching!

      Burger Fiction should have included the acid trip sequence from Doctor Strange then, imo. Or, the fight sequence in the mirror dimension against Kaecilius. Or, even a shot of Dormammu, or maybe the reversal of time scene at Hong Kong. Anything, but that.
      Hey, but otherwise a *Great* video!

    Though The Jungle Book's visual effects were the most technically impressive this year, I think the creativity that went into the visual effects of Doctor Strange is more impressive. Not upset that the jungle book won though.

    WOW, when you see what was amazing back then compared to what is available to even teenagers now, it really makes you think how blessed you are as a filmmaker to live in a time where you can do amazing things in even free software, such as HitFilm Express and Blender. You also have so many cameras and microphones and other gear available to you, yet we are spoiled and must have the most expensive and best looking camera. If you had taken a teenager's superhero short film back to 1927, they would have won the award (and also been the subject of time travel/alien superstitions). I am 13 years old and want to get into film, Btw.

    Kubo's nomination is confusing me. Not because I don't think it doesn't deserve it, but now I have to wonder about where VFX end and animation begins. Especially since things like the Lion King reboot are called "live-action" now.

    Movies that should've won:
    2007 Transformers
    2008 The Dark Knight
    2011 Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2
    2015 Star Wars The Force Awakens
    2016 Doctor Strange
    2018 Ready Player One
    2019 Avengers Endgame

    Early in Disney's career he created some shorts called "Alice In Cartoonland," wherein a real-life Alice interacted with animated cartoon characters. It seems to me that "Jungle Book" does the same thing, a live actor surrounded by CGI animation. Is this really progress or a step backwards?

    Kubo and the two strings is an underrated movie with a wonderful story and great Stop-Motion animation. a dying art if it weren't for Laika. It'll be very disappointing if it doesn't get the award. My bet is that Dr. Strange is going to get it. I found that movie to be very boring.

    A number of these clips don't feature visual effects but practical effects (the boulder in Raiders, for instance, the wire work for Logan's Run, etc.). Also, the clip from Star Wars is from a special edition, not the original, as evidenced by the Luke's X-Wing coming out of the explosion.
