    The fact that Citizen Kane didn't win for its masterful camerawork is a crime.

      Søren Saunders It's because the real life person who the character of Citizen Kane is based on (Randolph Hearst) had a lot of sway and forced people to hate the film. Even when it did win an Oscar, people booed it because of him.

    • @pppfan103
      @pppfan103 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Mr. Red Herring It wasn't ground breaking. It didn't do anything new. Orson Welles learned everything from other directors and their films, most notably John Ford's Stagecoach. What Orson Welles did was bring together the best aspects of other movies and putting them all into one movie.

    • @Kevin.A.S
      @Kevin.A.S 7 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Jackson DeStefano you said it in your own comment brother. What other director, at that time, took the best technical aspects of so many German Expressionist films and othersss, put them all together, tied the oscar winning script with the visuals in a masterful way, depicting a man's inner workings -- plus facing huge pressure behind the scenes, and he still had the balls to make a very artistic film, that still holds up today. Don't forget that he wrote, directed and starred in it (first film, age 25, budget of 3 movies).
      Film critics/lovers still ride that Citizen Kane D, all day everyday baby.
      Saying it isn't groundbreaking isn't backed up by facts my friend. No offense.

    The way the two different mediums developed while there were both b&w and colour oscars is striking. The b&w films focussed much more on light and shadow, while the colour ones went for reflections, landscapes and carefully coloured lights. Just look at how _Anne Frank_ compares with _Ben Hur_ in 1959.

      The last few times he's lost, it's been to movies that were just barely better (There Will be Blood over No Country for Old Men, Life of Pi over Skyfall, The Revenant over Sicario, etc.) but the fact that he didn't win for Fargo in 1996 is a travesty (The English Patient? Seriously?!).

    99% of the photography in La La Land is stunning but there are 2-3 instances where the camera does a pan that seems to have motion blur on it, and I felt a very brief nausea.

    • @tomgudde
      @tomgudde 7 ปีที่แล้ว +28

      The same kind of pan also happens in Whiplash (same director) if I recall correctly. I personally liked it quite well.

    • @Xavy276

      cutboot LOL take out the probable winner that is Arrival?

    • @davidrowe762
      @davidrowe762 7 ปีที่แล้ว +35

      I agree with Lion but Arrival was stunning

    • @cutboot
      @cutboot 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      For me the real boost of Arrival's great aesthetic is the Production Design, accolade for which is nominated. I like what it does in terms of cinematography, I think it's good, but for me The Neon Demon and The Handmaiden are better, I would even put Nocturnal Animals or The Witch before Arrival. But it's just my opinion :)

    • @davidrowe762
      @davidrowe762 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      cutboot that's a good point for sure, it's always tough for me to tell with some movies like Gravity or Avatar how much is due to great cinematography and how much is due to great special effects/production design

    • @fto5935
      @fto5935 7 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Absolutely. This year's choice is embarrassing. The acadamy confuses directing with cinematography and only nominates potential best pictures...

    outstanding nominees this year - any one of them could win and it would be well deserved (personal favorite is arrival, but I think la la land could pull off the Oscar as well)

    I had a hunch when I saw the black and white _Cleopatra_ that the 1963 remake would appear on this list also, making it the first time both an original film and its remake won for Best Cinematography.

    Recently I had a sort of déjà vue experience which occurred while boarding one of a series of buses to early morning classes at the University of British Columbia. I flashed back to the labourers' march in the opening scene of Doctor Zhivago. Movies are messing with my memory. Was I an extra in that film or not?
