      +Jeremiah Bullfrog back in 1982 they tought that using CGI was considered cheating and didn't count. On recent years they understood that was complete bullshit and accept CGI VFX. I think the guy that made those VFX got an honorary oscar for his contribution for visual effects

      You'd be surprised to know that "rotoscoping" goes back to the 1930s. Maybe farther back, although I remember that Snow White was, in addition to being the first full length animation ever produced, one of the first uses of rotoscoping. (essentially animating over live action). A quick google shows it was invented in 1915. Ralph Bakshi caught shit for using it (to great effect) in an animated version of The Lord of the Rings, which I caught in the theaters before Star Wars came out. i.onionstatic.com/avclub/5611/57/16x9/960.jpg

    I like how this includes the rocket pack scene in Thunderball, which was in fact filmed with a real Bell Rocket Belt, it was a stunt and not an VFX. The effects were of course used to make it look like Sean Connery was the one doing the flying. Love the video.

    • @BurgerFiction
      @BurgerFiction  8 ปีที่แล้ว +44

      +Scott Manley Yep for sure. Thunderball won because of the underwater work and effects. Unfortunately those scenes are dreadfully boring, so we chose the jetpack, even though the jetpack is real. However the part where you see Connery in the pack lifting off, is an effect. So technically it works! Thanks for watching!

    • @oldfrend
      @oldfrend 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      +Bobo411 the oscars have always been as much popularity contest as it is reward for merit, and an up-and-coming nobody like ridley scott was not gonna win over a spielberg epic juggernaut like ET. looking back this was one of the oscar's real travesties, like annie hall winning best picture over star wars, or Out of Africa winning anything XD

      +5ch3nk Yeah and the real shitty part is that the movie it lost to? ET - which was deemed too poorly executed and was REDONE by ILM later, just like Star Wars. Terrible. It was probably hard to tell at the time, but Blade Runner was so much better visually and so much more timeless. Really a shame it didn't win.

    That clip from Return of the Jedi doesn't belong here. It's from the 1997 "Special Edition" which used a CGI explosion when the Death Star was destroyed (among other alterations). I was a bit angry with Lucasfilm for marketing that release as an "Oscar winner" when it contained FX shots that didn't exist in 1983.

    • @12171010011010
      @12171010011010 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      George Lucas gets way too much credit for Starwars. The only movie he had complete control over was phantom menace, and we all know how that turned out.

    • @thesisko5645
      @thesisko5645 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      12171010011010 Yeah the prequels are atrocious but don't you dare start denying George Lucas isn't responsible for creating Star wars. he gets "way too much credit" because it wouldn't exist without him dumbass.

      Tallen Smith Avatar is already starting to look dated in my opinion.
      Interstellar was nearly all made with Practical Effects instead of CGI so that would explain why it looks better.

    Solid concept for a video series. One of those 'why didint I think of that, look at the easy views' kinda thing lol.
    The improvement in effects really makes itself apparent in the 50s and 60s. Leading to the pinnacle of practical effects in the 70s and 80s and lead into CGI in the 90s. It all kinda flows. Ive watched movies from all eras and genres, but thats never been so apparent to me before. Thanks.
