Spray Starter Fluid (ether) down the intake duct. If the engine runs on that, the spark system is working (crank sensor OK) so your problem is in the fuel system. Next step would be to verify fuel pressure at the supply to the injector rail (screw gage onto test port), then verify fuel injectors are pulsing. If a bad crank sensor, I think the engine controller doesn't even know the engine is turning over so won't spark or pulse injectors, and won't throw a code. If your fuel pump fails on the road, try kicking the fuel tank as you key on and off and it might start turning again to immediately drive home or to a shop. I took a bad one out once, gave it a little rap on the bench, and it then turned with 12 VDC applied (worn bearings can seize like that). Most cars with a MAP sensor, instead of MAF, will run fine with a vacuum leak but will idle too fast if the leak overwhelms the IAC valve (it is fully closed).

Front lower Ball joints are bad (I'm not 100% certain on this one, but I'm skeptical)- Tie rod boots are torn - not sure, but I don't have any of the power steering symptoms but possible and a cheap fix. Front Struts are worn out - Most definitely - that's one of the things I wanted them to look at because I know they are and I'm intending to purchase a full strut assembly for both the front and back to fix myself, but I wanted their advice on if I need a full strut assembly on both the front and back and what else might I possibly need to do with that. When they called me up the front man had a we have bad news for you and wanted to start fixing these things, but I picked my car up and there's a bunch of other shady things, this ramble is long enough - when I picked up my car there was fresh power steering fluid all over the valve cover and underneath, which wasn't there before. And because some clean cut well spoken person - most knobs are going to think it's great and since these places fix anything with dust on it and then some, you should rarely run into problems. Does anyone know of such a place that is solely incentivized to do vehicle inspections and not repairs. They perform $200 full inspections/full dianosing and that's their business model... or is that just too risky of a business model because unlike a mechanic all of their inspections are going to essentially be fact checked and they're going to be wrong from time to time even with expertise and good intentions, but anyways. It sucks. It's the one area where so many of us are vulnerable because the majority of people have a weak understanding of auto mechanics. And there really is no repercussion, but that's full blown theft and/or fraud.

Thank you, this is very helpful. I would like to add my two cents here. My Mazda 3 was cranking but not starting, and the reason was a faulty mass air flow sensor. No code was recorded. But the culprit can be pinpointed by disconnecting the sensor and the car can actually fire using it's built-in dummy mode. Worth checking if the car hesitated to start, dropped in mpg, or had thrown a P0101 code recently
I appreciate how simple you make things for anybody, thank you!! ATM my car is having a hard start but I just watched it other video and is about to test it out! Thank you
I just got a 2010 Sentra’s for $300 because the owner thought he blew the engine. Was cranking and not starting, lol I fixed it with a $12 pull a part air intake tube. The original intake tube had a big hole in it which messed up the air/fuel ratio and stopping the engine from starting lmao 🤣
So after watching your video and leaving a thank you comment and stating I'm a 65 you female.... I decided to buy a new battery because mine was considered old. My car almost started, so I did what you said and changed the fuse, and my car started 🌞 but it's taking 2 turns of the key, so I'm wondering if there's more issues like the ignition. Getting late here, so I'll check in the morning.
I just bought a used 2008 nissan xterra, 2 wheel drive. Ive only had it a week, and immediatelly it sometimes difficult starting it makes sounds trying to start but takes 5 - 10 seconds sometimes to finally fully turn on and engine run. But usually if its been running and only recentlly turned off , if i start it soon after it seems to usually start right up. I may be misremembering, but it seems to have more difficulty starting fully if its been turned off for a few hours or overnight. Guy who sold it to me said nothing about it, but i dont trust him at this point, as no way it literally just started happening the day i bought it from him. I had battery tested and its good, only a year and a half old. And i noticed a slight fuel smell today inside the xterra while driving it. Unfortunately i was told by oreillys auto parts when i asked about getting a new fuel filter that this model xterra doesnt have just a simple fuel filter that is easy to access and remove and replace alone, as its instead supposely inside the friggin fuel tank and has to remove the friggin fuel tank and replace whole fuel assembly and buy and whole new fuel assembly to replace fuel filter. Which is nearly $400 for just the part! What batshoot craxy dumb design instead of jjust having fuel filter outside fuel tank easy to access and replace like some vehicles.. And this xterra has a built in alarm system connected to a chip in the key, apparently. When locking and leaving vehicle apparently after getting a certain distance from vehicle thealarm automatically arms. Suddenly today when i drove to auto store and turned engine off and removed key, immediatley as i opened door to exit the vehicle the alarm suddenly went on making alarm noises for a minute. Had no idea how to turn it off or why it suddenly started alarming as i was still in vehicle with the key in my hand. It at least stopped alarming sound after a minute. Just concerned as it shouldnt do that and have no idea why it did or if its going to again and how to stop it.
My 2006 VW Beetle was doing this after sitting overnight. It was a 5$ sensor "coolant temperature sensor" Of course after spending 215$ for nothing, this 5$ sensor was the issue 🎉🎉
Hi... My toyota 2004 vitz ignite but don't start at first, however start at 2nd or third attempt and then runs smoothly... Hope you have a solution to this... Waiting for response
So this happened to me today. But after trying a few times it finally started, and has consistently worked every time I've tried it today. Any notion of which path I should take here?
I really enjoy the channel very informative completely I have 97 grand prix I've never changed fuel filter last week it acted like it didn't want to run so I took off tube for throttle body and cleaned it and it started but now it just won't start it's getting fuel pump comes on what can I check at fuel rail to see
brother very informative i been researching this for a month just to get all this information in such a clear form know i have a glimps of hope that my car will turn on at the moment im dealing with starter not engaging with fly wheel but ones thats good it should run in theory! checked everything else even learned how to check sensors on the way haha thank you subscribed right away
Good morning from Texas! I would appreciate anyone's feed back on this as I am not a mechanic at all. This morning I woke up and went to start my car. After 2 tries it only made the cranking sound and did not start. I left it alone for about 5 minutes and decided tp try again. On the third try it finally worked. Based upon watching this video, I learned the issue is not my battery which was my initial concern. Because when I put my key into the ignition, the lights turn on, it beeps if my door is open and when I turn the key the dashboard lights up, the radio turns on. My only issue is the cranking but not starting sometimes. Other times it starts perfectly. I do believe it could be a fuse. My car has gasoline the light hasn't even turned on for empty tank yet. I will be taking it to get checked since my car is very important to me.
Fuel can be determined by finding the fuel line pressure valve thake the cap off push in the needle valve and you should get a little gas out. Just follow the injector bar back. If uo have a guage just screw it on the valve. Crank to read presure.
okay... got one for you.. im working on a tug airport equipment.. crank no start but if i take out the fuel supply from the injectors, engine runs..it runs from the fuel that is on the fuel rail after it burns off engine dies.. you got anything from me
I just spent $460 on getting a new fuel.pump installed, on my 06 f350.still not starting. I'll throw a lil bit of gas down intake and it starts and runs until that gas gets used up. Idk what else it vsm be
My 1993 Mazda b2600 does this when it rains or on really humid days/mornings… I’ve replaced the distributor cap and rotor, spark plugs and wires, checked plugs on harness and fuses.. I’m lost 😞 haven’t replaced the coil yet but it’s an aftermarket NGK one so it has been replaced before 🤷🏻♂️ also replaced the older battery with a red top Optima since I run a stereo system, the radiator fan, AC clutch fan and power windows directly to the battery. All on switches
Hi mate I have a Great Wall Cannon 2.0 turbo diesel, and there was water in the fuel tank. GWM cleaned the tank and replaced the fuel filter, but they said three injectors failed. I took it of them because they wanted too much. I replaced four injectors from another used car with the same engine. I coded the used injectors and bled the system from the fuel rails and the injectors. But the car still won’t start. It used to start even when there was water in the tank, but it was running rough. Now, it just cranks. I’m looking for some advice on a few things. Do you have any recommendations? And only two codes came up in the scan tool. 183B.
Hello, nice vid. I have a daihatsu sirion 2 with K3-VE engine and it stopped running all of a sudden. It cranks, but no start. I checked all the fuses/relays, they seem good. I checked the crankshaftsensor and it's giving me close to 2000 ohms. So that seems ok. I tested the harness with ignition switched on, no voltage. Any idea what that could be? I still have to check to camshaftsensor though. Regards
@@drobinray Hello, first i want to say that I'm a christian, i pray to God and he works in mysterious ways. Hallelujah I found a comment on the internet to get another ecu and program by connecting pin 4 and pin 13 for half an hour in the run position (for toyota or toyota-based cars). I tried but could not get to program/start the car. Then I found another comment to switch back to the original ecu after the "new ecu" programming failed, I did that and the car started right up with the old ecu and has been running since. So if you have a toyota or toyota-based car you might wanna try reprogramming your ecu with the "pin 4 and pin 13" method. You can look it up on youtube. 07 Lincoln Town car. In the morning and sometimes when I leave work, it cranks but wouldn't start till I press on the gas pedal a couple of times.... ( Weird cause is drive by wire). Fuel pressure is at 39.5 psi, good fuel filter, no check engine light... Please advise...
Plug the hoses with something, like a screw if small, or anything that won't get sucked into the engine if bigger. Make sure it won't get sucked into the engine.
If it's your fuel pump, you might be able to get it going temporarily by banging on the bottom of the gas tank. Not a long term fix but it will get you home or to the mechanic.
2003 hyundai accent. Cranks but wont start, fuel to fuel rail. Spark at spark plugs. New map/iac sensor, swapped the horn and starter relay. Sprayed starter fluid into intake. It would run for a moment but then die. Suggestions?
Drove to inspection station. During test, 03 Ranger wouldn't start. 30 min later it started. Drove home. for 2 days it started. but i used my other vehicle. It hasn't started since then.
I saw an ad recently for a code reader about a bluetooth one..would you recommend any ones? Also, what is a price range for an engine diagnostic done at a shop?
Blue driver for about $100 is very good and is great value for what it does. My opinion is to avoid the cheap $20 ones. I own cheap $20 ones, Blue driver, and a $1000 one.
I have a Mazda bravo 2005 petrol Ute, which is cranking fine, but just wont start. we cant here the fuel pump clicking on all the time. Tried to hard wire it also, but the same. Can I just run a separate fuel tank to the motor through another fuel pump and filter ok or is it more complex than this. Only Ute it for short runs. I charged the battery fully and had it going so thought it may have been the battery. had it going and took it for a run and tried to start a few day later and all it will do is turn over.
Went and put gas in my car and went to a McDonald's left 30 minutes later and went to start my car it cranks tries to start, but it runs very shallow, the engine has no power its very sluggish, it dies 3 seconds later you hit the gas and it doesn't start, it threw a catalytic converter code a week ago. It hasn't had issues till I went and got gas at nomnom.
My truck had that starting issue, but code was P0300 means multiple misfire. I went through everything he mentioned, fuel pump, spark plugs wires, sensors, and the other things he went through for 10 months. And he didn't mention, the ecm computer. When I drove it last before it not starting you could feel the misfiring from one to four at a time, fuel gauge was dropping twice as much, and only go about 30 mph. Ecm computer was problem.
My 94 Camaro is having a hard start, and it began right after the new starter was put in. The kid added washers to seat it instead of putting the new bolts in so I'm wondering if that would cause the hard start. If it doesnt I'll check what you suggested in this video. Thanks for your knowledge
Hi there, My 2006 model Yaris is cranking without a start and there's also a check engine light. It only starts when I do quick start but it turns off after some seconds ..what could be the problem?
Thanks for the video mate. I'm having a hard time with 2006 Nissan Note, It's battery died so I tried to jumpstart it, suddenly it just cranks and won't start. Could I have messed up the ignition system somehow? Some dude said that to me before, I think he could have been out to scam me. I just want confirmation from you, can I really mess up a car's ignition system by jumpstarting it with lower power rating jumper cables? It couldn't do a thing with 600W rated but it does crank with the big 3000W rated set.
Low quality jumper cable don’t provide enough amps which can cause voltage to drop under starting load. But it’s very unlikely that’s the cause. Did you check that your cars anti theft system wasn’t triggered by the dead battery?
I have a 2009 kia rio, i started facing this starting issue but it happens once or twice a month sometimes 1-2 days straight. I thought it might be fuel pump but its not happening everyday. I own an 05’ Sienna and sometimes when the engine has been running for a while shut off and immediately re started it will just crank crank crank but won’t start. When starting from cold this never happened… No coded are showing. There is no fuel pressure port on this car What can I do?
Sometimes my car cranks but does not start. When if happens the problem does not get away by itself by reytrying. They checked my fuel pressure (when the car starts normal) and it's ok. My spark plugs are ok. My battery is ok. My start motor is ok. They can't reproduce the problem at the service center. When it happens, if I disconnect the negative pole of the battery before starting the car, and reconnect it, the car will start. What could it be?

Trys to start but won't. I also bought a code reader and it shows 0 codes. Any thoughts?
Exact same issue, in my case i changed alternator and it was working fine for some days. Now vehicle do crank but engine do not turn over. My mobile mechanic says its not starter or alternator issue. Have you found out what your issue was?
@roshanadhikari9003 I've been really busy so I sporadically have time to work on it. I've changed basically every sensor on the thing, just put a new fuel pump and filter in. But I think I found the problem last night ! I pulled out all my spark plugs just because I am running out of ideas. ( I checked a few of them for spark a while back and they were firing good ) But last night I pulled out all 8 and found 2 of the plugs are completely missing the electrode/ground ( the little metal hook/loop on the bottom of the plug that the spark fires to.) Hoping that I get time tomorrow to put new ones in. ( gonna replace all 8) I will leave an update if that fixes the problem.
@@jackucthatjack5896 also heard that fuel pump driver module if goes bad gives same issue, I will try to change that in mine tomorrow before bringing in mechanic if that works
@roshanadhikari9003 I went ahead and cha.ged spark plugs. It did NOT fix the issue. But that Fuel pump driver module sounds like it could be the solution. Let me know what you find out if u end up doing that tomorrow. The last time my vehicle was running It was running fine with no noticeable problems and out of nowhere when I was driving up a hill is when it shut down. There was no hesitation. It just went from running fine to shut down in an instant.
Crank more time but start after a long time of waiting. If I boost the gas pump the engine starts correctly. I changed the gas pump and the problem rested the same. I must to boost the gas pump.

All U.S. gasoline personal vehicles since 1996 have an OBDII port. Not all inexpensive OBDII readers work on all cars, especially newer cars (say 2000+). The $10 ones work on my 1996, but only a few cheapies work on my 2002 so need to pay ~$30. Newer vehicles also have additional codes you can read.

Josh is very clear to understand and logical..I reckon its one of the sensors on my car
Thank you
You can do it!
That's awesome
I just brought a 2006 c230 and it won’t start what should I do
Pls kindly advise, mine cranks some many times (8x) and eventually start, Could this problem be related to yours?

I have a 2005 Honda pilot and now my key won't even turn
It was a 5$ sensor "coolant temperature sensor"
Of course after spending 215$ for nothing, this 5$ sensor was the issue 🎉🎉
Thank you this has been the most straightforward video I have found yet
I really enjoy the channel very informative completely I have 97 grand prix I've never changed fuel filter last week it acted like it didn't want to run so I took off tube for throttle body and cleaned it and it started but now it just won't start it's getting fuel pump comes on what can I check at fuel rail to see
This was very helpful thanks🙏
This is very helpful to me I'm working on 97 grand prix it's getting fuel pump is primeing should I pull line to see if filter is clogged
What if your car cranks but doesn’t start with no codes on
Run the tests he laid out.
Engines need 5 things to start, fuel, spark, oxygen, timing, and compression.
My car is 2007 so I assume I don’t have most of the sensors cars nowadays have, and truth is, they don’t.

brother very informative i been researching this for a month just to get all this information in such a clear form know i have a glimps of hope that my car will turn on at the moment im dealing with starter not engaging with fly wheel but ones thats good it should run in theory! checked everything else even learned how to check sensors on the way haha thank you subscribed right away
You need a new thing-ah-ma-gig. And a pint of Old Charter.
@@jimmycain8669 perfect got it
Fuel can be determined by finding the fuel line pressure valve thake the cap off push in the needle valve and you should get a little gas out. Just follow the injector bar back. If uo have a guage just screw it on the valve. Crank to read presure.
okay... got one for you.. im working on a tug airport equipment.. crank no start but if i take out the fuel supply from the injectors, engine runs..it runs from the fuel that is on the fuel rail after it burns off engine dies.. you got anything from me
It’s awesome that you even thought to try that! That’s a tough one, perhaps some kind of fuel pressure sensor/switch?
I just spent $460 on getting a new fuel.pump installed, on my 06 f350.still not starting. I'll throw a lil bit of gas down intake and it starts and runs until that gas gets used up. Idk what else it vsm be
Fuel injectors need cleaning or changed out
Or a clogged fuel pump?
My 1993 Mazda b2600 does this when it rains or on really humid days/mornings… I’ve replaced the distributor cap and rotor, spark plugs and wires, checked plugs on harness and fuses.. I’m lost 😞 haven’t replaced the coil yet but it’s an aftermarket NGK one so it has been replaced before 🤷🏻♂️ also replaced the older battery with a red top Optima since I run a stereo system, the radiator fan, AC clutch fan and power windows directly to the battery. All on switches
Did you ever figure this out? I am currently dealing with the same problem
Great video! I like the way you explain what to look for. I learned some new things.
Also, it looks like you live in Hawaii?

Hi mate
I have a Great Wall Cannon 2.0 turbo diesel, and there was water in the fuel tank.
Regards
hi, how was your engine now? did you solve the issue?

I found a comment on the internet to get another ecu and program by connecting pin 4 and pin 13 for half an hour in the run position (for toyota or toyota-based cars). A good and affordable obd reader i have is a Veepeak VP01. Godbless

If I eliminated the lower fog lights do do an accident and they had vaccume hoses going to them would that affect the car not starting
Plug the hoses with something, like a screw if small, or anything that won't get sucked into the engine if bigger. Make sure it won't get sucked into the engine.
I know your your TH-cam is a long time ago however I wondering if you ever figured it out
I also own a 2003 A6 with he same problem
If it's your fuel pump, you might be able to get it going temporarily by banging on the bottom of the gas tank.
Not a long term fix but it will get you home or to the mechanic.
Very well made presentation.

Thankyou so much my parents have. A 2004 classic cheverlet it had gas and I checked the fuses
The Bluetooth iOS ones are decent. I find them a headache with all the connection setup. But when they work they work!
Which $1000 one do you have and do you like it?
Maybe it's a bad (new) starter, or possibly the wrong one? Check the model number.
Great video thanks very much, ur does Toyota rav4 have an inertia switch?

What can I do?
Sometimes my car cranks but does not start. When if happens the problem does not get away by itself by reytrying. They checked my fuel pressure (when the car starts normal) and it's ok. My spark plugs are ok. My battery is ok. My start motor is ok. They can't reproduce the problem at the service center. When it happens, if I disconnect the negative pole of the battery before starting the car, and reconnect it, the car will start. What could it be?

Exact same issue, in my case i changed alternator and it was working fine for some days. Now vehicle do crank but engine do not turn over. My mobile mechanic says its not starter or alternator issue. Have you found out what your issue was?
@roshanadhikari9003 I've been really busy so I sporadically have time to work on it.
I've changed basically every sensor on the thing, just put a new fuel pump and filter in.
But I think I found the problem last night !
I pulled out all my spark plugs just because I am running out of ideas.
( I checked a few of them for spark a while back and they were firing good )
But last night I pulled out all 8 and found 2 of the plugs are completely missing the electrode/ground ( the little metal hook/loop on the bottom of the plug that the spark fires to.)
Hoping that I get time tomorrow to put new ones in. ( gonna replace all 8)
I will leave an update if that fixes the problem.

Would older cars have the option for a code reader? Like 2008/2009?
Yes for sure. Odb2 interface has been on cars since the late 90’s and remains unchanged
All U.S. gasoline personal vehicles since 1996 have an OBDII port. Not all inexpensive OBDII readers work on all cars, especially newer cars (say 2000+). The $10 ones work on my 1996, but only a few cheapies work on my 2002 so need to pay ~$30. Newer vehicles also have additional codes you can read.
