It worked! OMG it actually worked! I have an older 88 honda civic and frankly, i barely drive it, atleast not long miles. But i've been having this problem off & on for about 6 years (would probably be 2 years in normal use, years)? But my car almost always starts when the engine is cold. But drive for 15 Ms & turn it off, and then try & start it again in less than 15Ms and it won't start. Now usually, if i waited 5 or 10ms, it will finally start. (Sometimes i would roll it back & forth one time & that worked). In fact, only once, until last week, had it just not started & it had to be left overnight somewhere, but when i returned to it the next morning, sure enuf, it started with no problem. Alas, last week it wouldn't even start from cold (but atleast i was home in my garage) and even after trying my self-starting battery charger (since it had sat for 4 days) that didn't work either. I finally called AAA after 2 days & they tried that and nada. So i asked if he could check for starter or alternator issues, and he told me that the car has to actually be RUNNING to check those. So, i waited 2.5 more days and went out when the outdoor temp got down to 55 (3am) and tried your trick and sure enuf, it cranked over like no problem. I then had to drive it for half an hour (pretty scary for a female) to build the battery back up, jic, but it DID - start! Now i have to get it started during the day, as the weather heats up (not helpful), so i can drive it to a shop to look at it, but again, with your trick, maybe or atleast i now have hope, that it will start when i can go get some help, so THANK YOU!!!!!
Impala does same thing. Just a couple weeks ago cranked in 2 seconds. Now about 5. Random gm electric issues a few weeks ago got in started car and almost no interior lights. Probably just alternator: all my gm cars never a fuss with engine. Just cheap electrical and plastics. Thanks for the video!
I have an 05 Town and Country thats having a long crank sometimes too start but runs very well, other than a little rough idle while sitting at a light with foot on brake. If i tap the gas as i try to start it, it'll start right up. 194,000miles. Well maintained, new oe plugs and wires, air filter, and I've recently cleaned the throttle body.
Hello! Stumbled across this video while looking for ways to diagnose a hard start condition on my 99 Nissan Maxima. Several months back the built-in factory immobilizer security system stopped recognizing my key chip causing the car not to start at all. Long story short-- the dealership wanted to replace the immobilizer AND my ECU to the tune of $2200, so I found a locksmith familiar with this problem who reprogrammed my ECU and/ or the immobilizer (not sure exactly what he did there) and reprogrammed my key chip for WAAAY cheaper. The car has always started since then, BUT now it usually cranks several times before starting, and not only that it actually seems to cut out completely sometimes while cranking and then come back. Also sometimes the engine sort of "bangs" into a start. I replaced the starter itself a few months back to see if that would help, and upon the first several startups after that it fired right up with no hesitation at all, but it has gotten worse again over time to where it now has the same problem of cranking several times and/or cutting out before starting. Any idea what this could be? This car uses coil-on-plugs so I'm wondering if I burned out a coil pack trying to start it so many times? Thanks in advance & love your videos!
Great video. My low mileage, 22 year old old truck always takes about 8 cranks to start, and it just doesn't sound right. The only time it starts in one or two cranks, is if it's been on a battery charger up until I start it. The battery is fairly new, with good voltage. So I'm guessing the extra charge in the battery helps an old, worn out part, to get enough juice to work the way it should. The coil, rotor and cap, alternator, fuel pump and filter, plugs and wires are all new. So I'm thinking distributor. It's always started a bit funky, since when I got it, the in tank fuel pump was shot. It was a school district truck, that laid around for many years, so I replaced many parts.
Will be trying all these tips. Just finished an engine swap on my Honda Prelude and it cranks and all but I'd have to step on the gas in order for it to start.
@@KookiDowg lmaoo you got to be shitting me bro 😂 I’m changing my starter tomorrow hopefully it works, imma take a look at that timing belt first now though lol
@@Whitetooth1030 Do you hear a single "click" while trying to crank? I'd confirm if you hear that to ensure that it is the starter. The timing belt issue was a skill issue on my end when I did the swap LOL

Just subscribed...Thanks for the video. What I liked about it is, not so much how to fix something...but the HOW TO diagnose the problem in the first place. In other words, the way you describe what to look for, for a certain problem and then you give many options as to what it can be along with simple ways to test for it. :) Thanks man, great video!
I smell a bit of fuel after turning the Tacoma off. It doesn't seem to be a leaking from the filter, which I recently replaced, so maybe now I will look at the injector seals. It does seem like a vacuum leak in the fuel line. After that, and a pressure test, I may look at the fuel pump. Anyway, always good to check the air filter too. Thanks for the tips!
Great video! You did not mention fuel pressure regulators (usually vacuum controlled) when you talked about fuel pressure. This is a common issue on some Volvo S40s.
I'm pretty sure the issue on my moms car is the spark plugs. 97 Honda Accord. Had to replace the seals under the valve cover and rings under the rocker arm assembly. That took care of the oil POURING into the tubes. Now it takes a few times to crank it. If this doesn't fix it, I will order a new fuel filter after a pressure check. Thanks dude.
UPDATE. Changing the spark plugs did not help. The car runs better, but the start-up issue didnt change. Starts up just fine after the initial startup. If left sitting for a while, it become difficult to start again. Going to change the fuel filter (150k miles, bought used, ran for 1k tops thus far) since we don't know when is the last time it was changed.
@@jackiechan6460 What ever ended up happening? Same issue and already had my throttle body cleaned, new battery. Next thing for me is spark plugs im at 125k and Ive never replaced them
My car was cranking forevwr before starting. Replaced fuel pump (has the filter and regulator inside the pump), brand new injectors, spark plugs and coil packs, oil change and filter and new air filter. After everything was replaced it started up beautifully. 3 hours later its cranking and cranking again before it starts.
Alright so I have a 2003 g35 coupe , so I’ve installed new spark plugs new ignition coils new fuel pump new camshaft (Both) new crank shaft position sensor , and new fuse , if it’s not any of those what else can it be besides the starter
Fantastic video. My wifes Nissan versa started doing this a few days go. ( these have in sump pump/ filter/ regulator combos. Car cranks cranks cranks cranks and then starts. Checked the battery and thats fine too. I did the key on/ wait / off x3 procedure you showed and it seems to indicate that the fuel pressure is too low. When I do this procedure the car starts up as normal. Nissan Datascan doesnt appear to have a fuel pressure reading for this car, so and I dont want to T into a fuel line to get reading from my fuel gauge, ( doesnt match any port anyway). My question is why would the car have low fuel pressure ( or a bad reg) yet when the car runs / highway, there is no hesitation or lean condition occurring?
I'm just beginning to troubleshoot my Civic that cranks several times before starting. I'll be trying your tip with cycling the key to pinpoint a possible failing fuel pump next. Thanks
Longer crank time(4 or 5 seconds) and right before starting it hesitates and 'roughly' starts. I had plugs/wires/cap replaced a year ago. As well as fuel filter, TPS, and most of vacuum lines. PCV/air filter/battery are good. I cleaned throttle body. Your first test 'Key on test' does not help. (when I remove gas cap I have quite a bit of pressure released/sucked...that pressure will release on it's own almost completely overnight). I replaced one cylinder head/gasket and checked pressure a year ago. 180-179 on 5 cylinders, one had 150 as I recall(on the head I didn't replace). No water in oil, I do loose coolant very slowly(a cup a month maybe). 1995(3.0vze) 4runner.
Two more things is bad pressure regulator not holding pressure. On cars with a fuel return it is in the engine compartment on the fuel rail, on cars with non return fuel system it will be part of the fuel pump assembly. The second thing is a possible fuel injector that is leaking. You can do a search to see how to diagnose these problems. I still would like to say that this is a great video because it included the sensors also, Thanks for the great info and work you put into the videos.
Thank you. I appreciated getting more information about hard starting. I may be able to troubleshoot my 2011 Subaru Forester's problem with intermittent hard starts.
Hello good fellow, Hard starting, your over view diagnostics does not talk about the symptoms of the fuel regulator, how would you diagnose it on a Toyota corolla 2000? which should be treated first the filter or the regulator? The symptoms are when ignition ket is on start it cranks motor for 5 round then starts. next in start it has a slight hesitation as if the regulator diaphragm is struggling to open, then it runs smooth afterwards no problem while on the streets or high way. Love your classes very informative for a DIY .
I'm no expert mechanic but every time this has happened to one of my cars its always been a fuel pump/filter/regulator (almost all newer vehicles have it all in one unit in the tank) and cycling the key on and off is the way to find out that's it. In my limited experience usually the other things may cause delayed starting but also result in a poor running engine as well
Brilliant! You are a very logical and wonderful communicator. Thank you very much. I wish i knew all this 20 years ago when I had the same problem which no one could diagnose.AAAh!
hey Mr R and W. I like your videos. I've watched a bunch. I recently replaced the fuel filter on my 1997 Toyota 4 runner 3vzfe ( 2.7 4 cyl ) motor. it was hard to do. Its located under the intake manifold. Gotta take off drivers side wheel to get to bracket with 24 inch extension. Finally got it done. Now have warm hard start condition. Cold start ok. I think the new ( OEM ) fuel filter either doesn't have a check valve or needs one or ?? cycling key twice does nothing to change this. MAF and Throttle body clean. IAC clean. New platinum denso dual electrode plugs. Clean Air filter . motor runs fantastic with lots torque and runs even on all cylinders. Just hard warm start condition after recent fuel filter change. Thanks !
I have an 99 f150 4.6 It cranks up with no problem when the engine is cold. But when hot it has about 4-6 second crank. I've noticed it will star up with a hot engine if I cycle the key a few times. I'll try the plugs and wires next because I've already replaced fuel pump, fuel filter, fuel pressure regulator, ignition switch, crank shaft position sensor, cam shaft sensor.
I had this 91 Accord that when it was cold I seriously had to crank it for no joke 30 minutes before it would start but once it was started and warm I could start it up all day everyday no problem I even delivered pizza with it.
Bought a 1990 Chevy 1500 and it takes like 3 cranks to crank I don’t know if it’s because it’s cold but I going to check everything that was in this video thx so much
I have a problem with my suv, if moved the key to the start position it takes about 5 seconds to crank and I don't know what could be the problem, because when it cranks it'll start right on. Please help? 🤔🤔🤔🤔
You forgot the "E" Coolant Temperature Sensor - It could be malfunctioning and telling fuel injection that the car is cold when its really hot, and flooding the engine on warm starts. You have to make sure you diagnose the ECT Sensor that controls the fuel injection, and not the ECT Sensor that operates the gauge.
Are there two separate sensors for both gauge and fuel? I have a 06 Corolla I have always struggled with intermittent starting issues. Sometimes it’s starts right up. Other times I’ll have to crank it 3-4 times before it starts
Question i had to put a battery in my 2001 nissan altima that didn't match but it was close just a slightly higher cold crank like 20 amps higher and thats when it started to take a good 30 seconds to a min of constant cranking to start i have the right one now but its still doing it but after the first long start its fine as long as I don't leave it sitting for a while I know I burnt something out but don't know what any ideas
I have a cts that is hard to start. Take two cranks to start. Ive replaced pump, filter, plugs, coils, throttle body, mass air flow sensor, ignition lock cylinder.. but its misfires still and is still hard to start. And smells like fuel sometimes. But drives fine when I push gas.
I've been banging my head against the wall for 2 weeks trying to figure out what was wrong with my 2000 Gmc Sierra.I did the key thing to build pressure, and it started. Now onto replacing my 3rd fuel pump in about 1 year.
I would also suggest another possibility is a small leak... that’s what my computer is tell me when I connect it to my car... but I found the small leak and replaced it but the problem persists, so I’m thinking it’s time to check those spark plugs
Thanks a lot for your useful videos, I've a BMW e90 330i, at the morning it starts perfect but after driving for a while and turns off the engine for more than 15 minutes, it cranks a lot, can you help? Thanks
@@lestersmart8452 Ok,I've another issue at the same car, everytime I start the engine it starts rough for 3-5 seconds then turns smooth even cold or hot, I changed spark plugs, coils, air Mass sensor, air filter, vanos solenoids, oxygen sensors, fuel pump and fuel filter but the problem still exists, can you help?
I'm no mechanic either...I've just learned quite a few things over the years from past experience and from good friends and searches on line! But..... sounds like it could still be a cylinder misfire!! It is possible to buy defective parts from any parts store.. or could be one of your spark plugs was not gapped correctly...Did you replace with OEM Plugs? And were the plugs already pre gapped? Also, I would still buy a can of Mass air cleaner and spray your MAF Sensor even if it is new! It could still be your problem if the sensor got even just a litte dust or dirt on it upon installation.. Another thing to look at is timing... Try replacing the Ignition Misfire Sensor...They cost around 80 bucks but usually only take around 10 minutes to change..If its faulty, it could be giving bad readings to your cars computer upon starting....
i replace the crankshaft position sensor hoping it would stop the surge in idle when setting, what else could cause this problem on this 1998 ford Taurus.help if you can.
Hello, elusive hot start issue 99 gmc safari van 4.3 v6 Engine starts perfect when cold but Cranks forever when hot. Eventually it starts and stalls ...immediately crank again and it starts and runs ruff for 2 seconds...Then seems to run fine. Fuel pressure tests fine at 60 pounds however it begins to bleed down right away possibly a bad fuel pressure regulator in the Plenum. Spark plugs wires rotor all change with AC Delco new parts makes no difference. Vacuum seems fine as the HVAC controls are vacuum operated and they are working fine. Changed out a bad coolant temperature sensor now the temp Reaches 210 normally. Normally no check engine lights however after the long hot start and stall ...I sometimes get a PO302 misfire detected cylinder 2 ...sometimes ...I get no check engine light all the pens how hard the stall is. I’m leaning towards a leaky fuel pressure Regulator located inside the intake Plenum but I’m not sure why it starts perfectly fine when the engine Has been sitting for 8+ hours. I hate to take the whole intake Plenum apart as it’s a big job to change out a $20 part. All fluid levels are perfect. Ignition coil in regulator have been changed out , no difference. Any thoughts or suggestions?
As a get by until you can get it to the man ,instead of cranking the crap out of it witch on some fords they will not start if you do an extended crank just bump the starter for 5 seconds each time it will start usually in 2-5 times but if you cycle the key all the way off each time it will erase the code for the key fob usually on the 4th time on a ford.
2002 ford explorer: I had the same problem. And once it started it would start all day, next time it sat for ant length of time I'd have a hard start again. First started with replacing the battery, not it! Next was the Fuel filter, Again not it! Replaced the plugs and wires, Not it! Turned it over to my neighbor that had testing stuff. fuel line tested fine ever though it sounded like it was starving for fuel. Fuel pump was ruled out at that point. Longer story short it ended up being the engine coolant temp sensor wiring pigtail was loose. with the test unit in place it would show that it wasn't read it correctly. Tightened up that connection and it starts every time now. We found this same problem over and over on the internet but never saw the fix. Hopefully this helps and maybe your is this simple!!

Chino Moreno is a mechanic haha. Good video bro
Thanks in advance & love your videos!
mass air flow can be cleaned with q tio.+70% isopropyl alcohol. gently wipe wires+ then spray screen with correct cleaner.
Ever found the problem ?
@@Whitetooth1030 The timing belt was off by a tooth lol
@@KookiDowg lmaoo you got to be shitting me bro 😂 I’m changing my starter tomorrow hopefully it works, imma take a look at that timing belt first now though lol
@@Whitetooth1030 Do you hear a single "click" while trying to crank? I'd confirm if you hear that to ensure that it is the starter.
The timing belt issue was a skill issue on my end when I did the swap LOL
@ lol I ended up fixing it this morning so my battery was only pushing 11V so I changed it but still mt engine Would just CLICK CLICK no crank. But come to find out I had a faulty battery lol once I swapped the new one with a newer one it was fixed! Smdh had me trippin for nothing

Informative and to the point! Great video. 🔧
Something funny here, this is the exact car I am running diagnostics on. 1996? camry. Gotta fix a lot with her. Thanks for posting this!
great video! As are the other ones. I used the subaru timing belt video to change my impreza's belt. The zip ties worked great!
Didn't see it said so may have overlooked it but another big culprit is the camshaft position sensor
this is a video with good possible solutions to an annoying problem.
Awesome video, checking everything tomorrow after work 🎉
My 2012 Scion xB started doing this. Changed the plugs but that’s it. Now to troubleshoot. Thanks for some direction
I love this video. He he explain things very well. Thank you for posting this video
Just subscribed...Thanks for the video. What I liked about it is, not so much how to fix something...but the HOW TO diagnose the problem in the first place. In other words, the way you describe what to look for, for a certain problem and then you give many options as to what it can be along with simple ways to test for it. :)
Thanks man, great video!
Very punctual, informative and very well organised. Excellent quality channel, I'll most certainly be going though many of your videos.
Next thing for me is spark plugs im at 125k and Ive never replaced them
You are the best, thank you very much for taking time aside to help in us repair our cars.👍👍👍👍👍🚘🚘🚘🚘🚘🚘
This is good video to save to your playlist.
Thanks
Thx bro for narrowing it down for me I was thinking my starter is dying lol now I will check the fuel filter and pump 😎
+Ricardo M. Good points, thanks for the input. Cheers
I'm a new fan
I really love your explanation and your professionalism
Thank you. I appreciated getting more information about hard starting. I may be able to troubleshoot my 2011 Subaru Forester's problem with intermittent hard starts.
cycling the key on and off worked for my car - thx!
Same !
How many times did you do it before cranking?
@Shelly Love mine is working with just the one time turning off and on. 👏🏼
i been doing that lately.
@@panthermom probably about 3_4 times i guess.
Hello good fellow,
Hard starting, your over view diagnostics does not talk about the symptoms of the fuel regulator, how would you diagnose it on a Toyota corolla 2000? which should be treated first the filter or the regulator?
The symptoms are when ignition ket is on start it cranks motor for 5 round then starts. next in start it has a slight hesitation as if the regulator diaphragm is struggling to open, then it runs smooth afterwards no problem while on the streets or high way.
Love your classes very informative for a DIY .
I'm no expert mechanic but every time this has happened to one of my cars its always been a fuel pump/filter/regulator (almost all newer vehicles have it all in one unit in the tank) and cycling the key on and off is the way to find out that's it. In my limited experience usually the other things may cause delayed starting but also result in a poor running engine as well
Good video, direct and simple & helpful. Thanks
Very straight forward, and very well explained, thank you !
What if the long cranking only happens once and on a cold morning? Throughout the day I don't have any issues with it starting up.
I have the same issue. It also makes a noise when it after starting, but when its warm cranks up find.
Brilliant! You are a very logical and wonderful communicator. Thank you very much. I wish i knew all this 20 years ago when I had the same problem which no one could diagnose.AAAh!
Most informative DIY auto repair channel. Thanks bro 😀
LOVE it !
hey Mr R and W. Thanks !
Thank you so much I was having trouble finding the problem
Wow, thank you! I did that and it worked. :) Thanks again for sharing your knowledge.
Bought a 1990 Chevy 1500 and it takes like 3 cranks to crank I don’t know if it’s because it’s cold but I going to check everything that was in this video thx so much
Great information first tip help solve the issue thanks
I have a problem with my suv, if moved the key to the start position it takes about 5 seconds to crank and I don't know what could be the problem, because when it cranks it'll start right on. Please help? 🤔🤔🤔🤔
Thank you so much! You do a terrific job relaying information and we are grateful!
Other times I’ll have to crank it 3-4 times before it starts
thank you..from New Zealand Car enthusiast.
for hondas the likely problem is fuel pump motor needs replaced, main relay solder joints separating, ignition switch electrical part worn out
Yeah that pgm-fi main relay on those older hondas did go bad often. ..
If you need to learn something about your car you've come to the right place
Great video man! Very informative. Keep up the good work
I would also suggest another possibility is a small leak... that’s what my computer is tell me when I connect it to my car... but I found the small leak and replaced it but the problem persists, so I’m thinking it’s time to check those spark plugs
Thanks a lot for your useful videos, I've a BMW e90 330i, at the morning it starts perfect but after driving for a while and turns off the engine for more than 15 minutes, it cranks a lot, can you help?
Thanks
Crank shaft position sensor!!! Either it needs replaced or cleaned really good!!

Thanks a lot, I'll try.
Also try to clean the throttle position sensor!!!

Ok,I've another issue at the same car, everytime I start the engine it starts rough for 3-5 seconds then turns smooth even cold or hot, I changed spark plugs, coils, air Mass sensor, air filter, vanos solenoids, oxygen sensors, fuel pump and fuel filter but the problem still exists, can you help?
Awesome video, man! I’ll definitely be studying all these videos you’ve linked and do some minor maintenance on my vehicle.
just subscribed. now I'm off to find out why my 92 civic cranks so long before starting
I had that same problem, it is the fuel pump motor , it is getting weak.Replace it and you will be fine.
Terrific video! I learned a lot. Thank you!
i replace the crankshaft position sensor hoping it would stop the surge in idle when setting, what else could cause this problem on this 1998 ford Taurus.help if you can.
Just had the alternator and battery replaced in my 2012 mustang. Still has a longer than normal crank in the mornings. Will try cycling the ignition.
Tried the cycle thing once this morning and it worked!! Thank you so much. I’m stressed out every morning wondering if my car will crank.
Thanks for step by step tips
Great job. Great tips
Hello,
elusive hot start issue
99 gmc safari van 4.3 v6 Engine starts perfect when cold but Cranks forever when hot.
