jimthecarguy on my 2006 Cadillac CTS I get code p0335 and I already replaced the crank sensor and harness but the code is there and I noticed no jump in rpm when cranking, what’s this mean
This is how every repair shop should be run . This honest mechanic is worth his weight in gold as he patiently diagnoses and shows the fixes with experience and precision . Another shop would have left the kill switch inoperable to bleed the customer's funds . Thanks Jim, you are a credit to ASE mechanics and humanity .
It is sad to say that most shops would sell everything that they could just to jack up the bill. I believe that there is no such thing in this business as honesty. Many of my customer just hand me the key and tell me just fix it and call when it is done.
More proof that proper diagnosing of a problem Is key instead of throwing parts at a vehicle. Anyone can read a scanner but only a technician who understands proper vehicles processes can properly diagnose issues like this. Great work.
I went to one mechanic and told me to buy a certain piece that I didn't need. So I went to another mechanic . And he told me to buy 2 different parts. That I didn't end up needing also ..
and most "mechanics" DON'T do any diagnostics. that kind of shoddy work makes us all look bad. diagnostics is a skill and takes a lot of practice. i think most people are just to lazy to do it right.

Jim i am an American on a remote island in the South Pacific with a Ford Escape. All i can say is THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!! Your video's are in depth and well done! Seriously Appreciated!!
When you said check to make sure you have gas, I thought “Wow, who doesn’t know they are out of gas.” I went and checked though. Bam, that was it. I was out of gas. Thank you for mentioning this. I was going to get it towed, but got it fixed. Thank you.
Great video, Jim! I like the way you systematically checked things starting with the simplest to the more complex. I wouldn't have thought of checking the inertia switch. I'm an old guy who still struggles to learn all the new technology. Keep up the great work.
I would really like to thank the makers of this video. My SR20 (in my taxi) has not started for a few days. After watching this video, It turns out that the tachometer was not moving during cranking so I checked the spark plugs and distributor and realized that the they both got wet during the rain and the wires close to the jack for the distributor was exposed where it turned and that also got wet. I cleaned and blow dried everything and siliconed the wires and I am back in business. Thank you.
You are amazing Jim!! Real auto mechanic that truely want to help people. I didn't fix much, but I enjoy watching you fantastic videos. I've been listening to every word that you teaches us it's so interesting. I want to THANK YOU you for you time and dedication to help all these people out there. i wish I was under your wings.
Hi, Mr. Jim. I hope everyone is doing okay. I have just learned something very new many thanks to you Mr. Jim for sharing this video with us. Highly appreciate it.
Thank You! All of the other no start videos do not mention the fuel cut off switch. My no start was not the pass key, starter, or fuel pump. I pushed the button and my 08 Mercury Mariner fired right up!
Jim I am always amazed at how much a great mechanic knows. Your experience in trouble shooting is marvelous, but than to know the make of vehicle problems takes years of experience. Right now I got my ford Taurus that wont start, I believe it is the starter but after watching you diagnose, it could be anything. Wish I had your experience. Love your videos. Thanks for sharing and always helping out with your videos...
Thank you sir, your video just saved me. I did have to push my truck 1 1/2 miles down the road beforehand. No knowledge comes without a cost. I was walking up to my truck saying, "theres no way this is going to work, no way." and it fired right up.
This information is straight forward and to the point. I went through 8+ others that had 0 content or help at all and this fellow had every tip and trick in the book!
Today I had the same problem. Went for a ride, came home, went back out and crank but no start. Tomorrow I sill see if it is the inertia switch. Thanks so much for the great vid.
You rock! You mentioned the tach should move to 300-500 rpm when attempting to start. Mine stays on zero. The crank sensor is bad. Saved me $150 tow bill and $175 hr at Ford dealership. Crank sensor cost $60 and two hrs to install (cuz i'm a bit slow). Thanks Jim. I owe you a beer buddy!
Appreciate your knowledge and expertise. Did not know there was an Inertia Switch. Nor, did I consider the Light Bulb as a safety factor. Thank you for the step by step process in reference to diagnosing, tools & safety from beginning to the end .
Learned something, screwdriver in Spark plug socket with tester light grounded! Thought for sure you had a bad fuel pump, Inertia switch who would’ve thought? Didn’t even know what a Inertia switch was until this video! Thanks for making me more experience now.
good job jim it save me a lot of time . this morning my friends truck 2008 ford ranger pick up truck . was parked out in the street, he noticed his front passenger side wheel was all smashed up he said i dont recall running off the road. long story short , truck did not start i try the fastest way sprayed ether in throttle body truck started , i know it had spark . rpm needle was moving . so i assumed, it was a relay or fuel pump. but i looked at your video and then . found the inertia switch .reset it back up . truck started right away ,now im waiting on idle arm so i can replace it who ever crashed the truck broke it lol . and i told my friend to go ahead and order a new enertia switch thanks for your video great help ...keep up the good work ..blessings
Thank you, Jim. Somehow my inertia switch activated. My 2009 ranger looks be running well again. Thanks again. My switch was in the same area but a slightly different spot. Its next to the fuse box but you need to remove or loosen the plastic cover. Thanks again - Dave
Towed my 2004 Ranger home today with an identical issue. Watched this video, pushed the red button, and it started right up! Thrilled I don't have to drop the tank.
Excellent presentation and video skills. Thank you! My 98 Dodge Intrepid seems to fail to start after running fine but left parked off -level side-to-side. That really made me wonder about your saying it had to be mounted straight up in the new location. In the Dodge forums, I've seen it called a "fuel cutoff switch". I'm adding it to my checklist today before I try to run down my 'crank but no fire" no start issue. Maybe I can save a couple hundred dollars if I can DIY.
Nice to know! The other day my nephews '04 Ranger had almost the same issue, shut it off, 5 min later crank but no start, fuel pressure was at 0 (key On) Eventually he could get the truck running, without touching the inertia switch. He'd been having the problem for a few months, finally decided to tell me! Turned out to be the fuel pump relay
Awesome, educational video! Very thorough. Just want to add as a safety precaution at 8:24 that similar to the severity of the warning regarding the light, the battery NEEDS to be disconnected whenever fuel is being allowed to spray within the engine bay. I'm sure this was done, due to how flippantly close the hands are placed, but I believe it wasn't' quite mentioned.
I have a 2002 ford focus zx3 I changed the clutch flywheel a know I will not start but before all of that it ran great so I changed the flywheel an starter because the old starter ate the the flywheel up after putting the new one on know it will not start an poping back throu the pipes can't figer out why
I enjoyed this video. Good troubleshooting technique. I subscribed. I noticed that you actually drove the car as a final test and then found additional problems. A lot of mechanics would have reset the switch and assume they had fixed the problem. I do my own work when I can, but sometimes I take it to a shop. I selected this shop to do my work because a reviewer said they didn't fix his problem. They responded that the problem was an intermittent and they couldn't duplicate the problem and returned his car with no charges. Sounded honest to me so I started taking my vehicles to them. I have had good experiences with them and their prices are reasonable. Prior to this I took my Ford F150 to a dealership with an intermittent miss. They guessed at the problem and charged me $250 or so and did not fix the problem' " I don't know" is sometimes a good answer.
+Charlie Wilson Thank you for your input. You are correct intermittent problems are the hardest to find .I had a Chevy with an intermittent problem only after the problem got worse was I able to duplicate the problem and repair it.This is the video I did if you are interested. th-cam.com/video/BqLyq2xfT_4/w-d-xo.html ,Thanks again.Jim
So true sometimes I don't know is a an awesome answer as well I agree man. I had a guy change my flex disk in my e320 he didn't know what the fuck he was doing and put it on wrong, left and had the same shaking issue. So I went outside and looked under the car, and then I saw he didn't tighten my tranny mount screw and the striped the two thats on the bracket that holds the mount. That's what I get for getting crack baby's to work on my Benz. The man in AutoZone warned me I laughed arrogantly I should have listened to him. If he had said, I don't know how to do it. I would have said okay man.
You were a God send! I have been working on my truck for days, reading forums and watching videos, thought I was going to go nuts trying to figure out what was wrong with my truck. I must have hit my inertia switch when changing the air filter (mine is located right beside it) No one has covered that I have found. Thank you so much for sharing this!! Like others have implied I am sure there are plenty of mechanics that take advantage of our lack of knowledge, thanks for not being one of them.
Other things to check would be emc relay, of couse you have spark. and the fuel pump relay. My 94 Ranger would not start for 20 or 30 minets at different times when hot. I pulled the suspect relays, banged them on the power booster. the truck started. I replaced both relays.
I have seen a couple of tripped inertia switches over the years, usually from slamming the door shut but I have never seen one fail like that one. Nice diag and repair, Jim. That's one thing that makes our job interesting. Just when we think we have seen it all something new comes along.
Great video. I'm not a person to work on vehicles but I am grateful for people with your knowledge to explain things well enough so I can understand and almost know what the problem is. An obvious question that comes to mind is what is the actual need for an inertia switch and other added "features " that will give you issues like this as opposed to the older, simpler ways of cars being made?
According to what he said and I understood is that the inertia switch shots the fuel pump off in an event of accident. If the truck gets a high impact crash it blocks the fuel to (avoid fire) the last is my assumption.
Thank you I'm glad I watched it I have a Y2K Ranger I had no idea about the inertia switch I will check it before moving on 2 pressure and pump connection thank you for a straightforward and informative video
Hi Jim, appreciate the video. Need help with my car cranking, new fuel pump, 3/4 tank full, and tried starter fluid but still won’t start. I believe I am not getting any spark and new spark plugs were just put in. Any help/ advice is appreciated. Thank you so much.
One thing not to overlook because I’ve done it before is the wiring, make sure it’s all hooked up. What car is it and which engine? It could also be the battery, it might need to be charged or in a more rare case replaced.
I have a 1995 ford f150 and my starter turns but couldn't get the engine to run, Thanks to you for putting this out about the Fuel Shutoff Switch. It happen to me, looked into the owners manual sure enough I have one in my truck. Went and opened to panel in the passenger forward lower area and there it was. I found mine dirty cause I wiggled it and dust/dirt came out. Went to crank the engine and it started without any hesitate.
Great work! Shows how much time some experience can save you. Years ago I first heard about those inertial switches in Fords and I keep forgetting about them.
Awesome Video! Jim, thank you so much. My 2004 Ford Ranger had the same issue today and watched your video. Reset that button and the engine starts like a charm. Thank you again!
You’re best.sir! I’ve watch a lot of mechanics here in TH-cam but you do explain it properly the problem and the solution of car problems. I love watching your videos. Keep up the good work sir!
What an interesting story! Gotta think there are a fair number of fuel pumps replaced by mistake if the mechanic didn't check for power and ground at the pump. Those wires can be hard to get to without dropping the tank. With the redesign, I wonder if the inertia switch was designed for a side mount and then an engineer made the mistake of placing it at 90 deg as a front mount.
I will bet that a lot of pumps were replaced needlessly .To many mechanics as well as owner just replace the pump without checking power and ground. Your right about the switch especially when the replacement was redesigned. By the way I like your channel and just subscribed.
Oh, thanks, Jim. I'm going to work through your videos, there is a lot of interesting work you've posted that is clearly worth my time. I appreciate the sub, though I'm just a humble amateur.
Hi guys, got a similar problem here with my 2003 Nissan Pulsar/sentra. I have just had the Crank sensor and Cam angle sensor replaced (trouble shooting) now I have just watched your movies and some others and noticed that when I try to start the car there is no Rev count at all.... Story is I swapped a 2001 engine into my 2003 Pulsar, both worked fine before hand and now will crank but not start. any insight would be much appreciated
Nope not yet... I've had to send it to an auto sparky as I have no idea I have changed all sensors including knock sensor and still nothing. Won't fire/ spark
love your vidoes..learned alot by watching them..and ive been turning wrenches for over 40 yrs. quit back in the early 80s working for dealerships ..now we just build older cars like nothing newer than 74..and we stay busy..lol hotrods and customs, is the only thing we do now. we build them or work on them but if its got sensors and computers on it sorry take it somewhwere else
I just wanted to say thank you very much for your help it was the switch underneath dashboard on the passenger side I reset it and haven't had a problem since good job thank you very much for the help
trippplefive If the vehicle is under warranty, Ford might have a recall on that vehicle. Call Ford about your vehicle if you can. When buying a car from a dealer or used car lot, DON'T get the 100,000 mile warranty! Get the other. You are paying for more than necessary. The dealer makes money off of it. Also when you move from one address to another, call the electric company and have the remaining balance transferred to your new address. People have a credit coming to them and don't know it!
great comprehensive diagnostic video. liked testing fuel pressure at schrader valve. would add a clogged fuel filter is more common than fuel pump failure. testing for spark can also be done by removing a single spark plug and this allows trying a new plug. If working alone a remote starter switch is very helpful and only costs $15.
hi really loved your vid i changed my fuel pump on my chevy k1500 5.7 1990 &it still wont start my mechanic said it ''could'' be my computer if it is & i get 1 from a scrap yard how would you know if it's good or not ??? or are you just taking a chance . thanks
I has 1988 Ford export gt which had a safety fuel switch located in the trunk that nice feature but pain if you didn't know great video diagnostic test 👍
Nice one Jim, you showed how to logically get to the problem by eliminating what wasn't the problem. Trouble with us humans is we tend to jump in with the 'I know' frame of mind when, in hindsight, the answer is staring us in the face! Good video, please keep them coming!!
+Lincoln England Thank you for watching and your feedback. It's true even I jump to a conclusion when a car comes in and only after checking it further do i really find the problem.Thank you for your input.Jim
define "crank". do you mean it wont spin the engine over, or does it turn over and just not start? big difference. how is the carb? has it been rebuilt or is it full of varnish? have you checked out the choke and float settings?
Great methodical diagnostics I have a 1979 mgb that will not start while cranking but will run when key is in the on position either push start or if cranking fast it will start when you let go of the key. Am I looking at an ignition switch? The car sat for 3 years
Hi , love your videos you make it easy for me a women to understand as well so thank you for that, I have a 05 dodge neon 2.oL .no crank no com no start. Try everything to fix it . Not 1 thing has worked, so now I'm getting a new PCU/ EMC . Wish I had you as my mechanic I think you are wonderful just wanted to let you know.
Sometimes I would spray either in the intake to see if it runs for a minute, just to make sure there are no mechanical problems , but you are correct about all the things you do. Its always check the simplest things first ! I love this channel , I worked at Branch Auto Electric for over 24 years , I had an accident and I had to stop !
Iknow it’s been 5 years since you commented but I would like to ask for some help my 2012 bmw 328i 2.0L cranks but doesn’t start , I have spark , my engine is rotating , my timing chain is good but I still don’t understand how it’s not turning on
@@Juaiv Does it run when you spray starting fluid in the air intake does it run for a few seconds? You can spray the starting fluid in the intake where the air filter is, but be sure to clip the air filter housing back quickly than try to start, use a lot of spray. If it starts for a few seconds, it's a fuel problem. Which could be caused by fuel pump or fuel injection. I would check all the fuses in all fuse panels. Some fuses only have current when the ignition is on and some only are hot in the cranking position . Let me know if that helped you trace down the problem. You can also use a noidlight to check injector pulse.
+SteelCity1981, There very well may have been a recall on that switch and/or issues with it. Look it up in ALL Data or Mitchel's On Demand model specific repair and service database. Autozone.com may be able to tell you or try a VIN number search for recall listings for your year, make and model. MrCyber2000 - Cyber Technologies International

I'm having the same problem with my e350 ford camper it was running great and now it cranks but won't start, I'll go check the trip switch thanks for sharing this.
Great video , pump problem on my Ranger 93 4 cyl I will check it out , also never thought of JUST PRESSING the Schrader valve , eliminate the pressure gauge .THANKS !!!
your the best the water pump o/l hose damaged it cause high saound when happened car turned off tried to started after cool down cranking but wont start i thought water damaged something as it splashed all over the engine i saw this video and had the fuel pump rested bingo it runs ok thanks man you saved me the money and time
Jim, you saved me a lotta trouble earlier today. I parked my truck in front of a store and lwft her running with the a/c on because my dogs were riding with me. I took the fob with me so I could lock it, when I come out less than 10 minutes later it was not running and all kinda stuff was running through my head, outa gas?, overheated? Fuel pump? Bad gas ?She would not catch a start, After waiting a while I would try again and wait and try...on and on etc. My phone was almost dead.. I prayed to the Lord , I was on the other side of town ; broke till payday. Had thrown my last 20 bucks in it for gas earlier that morn. Prayed again askin God, please help.Trying to think. I google " 2006 Ford Ranger...low and behold, your video "I can help" was the first on the list and I clicked . You were my guardian angel today.Turns out one of my dogs knocked a bunch of my stuff off the seat and subsequently must have tripped the switch ! THANKS A MILLION ! btw, I subscribed !

Got a Chrysler Town n country all seams to be ok the button you press only air comes out no gas
What if the rpms dont increase when trying to start it?
I just sprayed starting fluid in the air filter housing and it start ruled out the fuel pump that easy.
jimthecarguy on my 2006 Cadillac CTS I get code p0335 and I already replaced the crank sensor and harness but the code is there and I noticed no jump in rpm when cranking, what’s this mean

But there was no code that indicated a bad crank sensor ??
@@veremanabsolutum8265 I hear that it's not uncommon for a bad Crank sensor to not throw a code
Yeah I read that online it wouldn't give you a code because the computer makes its own value. Also If there's 2 the second one would over compensate
Was your vehicle not cranking or staying cranked??? Nothing on my Explorer is making sense. I’ve changed the battery and more already.
Hey Anthony does this same rule apply to a Ram 1500
Appreciate your knowledge and expertise. Did not know there was an Inertia Switch. Nor, did I consider the Light Bulb as a safety factor. Thank you for the step by step process in reference to diagnosing, tools & safety from beginning to the end .

Thank you for your input .I'm happy to help.
Thank you Sir.
I cycled the key 3 times, and it worked
I learned a lot today! Inertia switch! I'd never heard of one before today! Thanks for wonderful information.
I had both my ear buds on and at 5:24 I almost crapped my pants thinking he got shocked or something lol
lmao.. 🤣
5 years later and this video is still valid, I just reset my inertia switch and all is good.
I'm happy that it helped you out. Thanks for watching.
You do know your job! Thanks for sharing
Thank you! Just replaced a motor. The rpm explanation, great. New crank sensor. Truck started right up. Thanks again for posting.
I was told I need to replace my 07 motor and was wondering if you could let me know where you got yours from please I would greatly appreciate it

Great work! Shows how much time some experience can save you. Years ago I first heard about those inertial switches in Fords and I keep forgetting about them.
Thanks for watching.
Just saved me a lot of work and money!!! Thank you for sharing. My issue was the same on a 2006 ford freestar
GREAT video! You really know what you're talking about and I learned a lot. Thank you!
+mcquality55 Thank you for your input and for watching
Awesome Video! Jim, thank you so much. My 2004 Ford Ranger had the same issue today and watched your video. Reset that button and the engine starts like a charm. Thank you again!
same thing happened to my truck it was a ground cable from the battery attached to the frame kicked the inertia switch the , the relay wasn't bad
You’re best.sir! I’ve watch a lot of mechanics here in TH-cam but you do explain it properly the problem and the solution of car problems. I love watching your videos. Keep up the good work sir!
Thank you for watching . I'm happy to help. Don't forget to subscribe.
Best video ever , THANKS
Thank you for stopping by the shop
yo bro good wht 7
gurts like hell
because you're my husband baby come get me
daddy
Thanks for the information regarding this repair, I will definitely try and locate that on my truck tomorrow and see if that is the issue
Adam Pickering you fix it?
Nope not yet... I've had to send it to an auto sparky as I have no idea I have changed all sensors including knock sensor and still nothing. Won't fire/ spark
love your vidoes..learned alot by watching them..and ive been turning wrenches for over 40 yrs. quit back in the early 80s working for dealerships ..now we just build older cars like nothing newer than 74..and we stay busy..lol hotrods and customs, is the only thing we do now. we build them or work on them but if its got sensors and computers on it sorry take it somewhwere else
Amazing! I had never heard of that, inertia switch.
I just wanted to say thank you very much for your help it was the switch underneath dashboard on the passenger side I reset it and haven't had a problem since good job thank you very much for the help
looks like something Ford should be fixing for free.
oh my goodness! Yes indeed!
I agree with you, but I doubt ford will
Old part. Not hardly?
trippplefive If the vehicle is under warranty, Ford might have a recall on that vehicle.
Lol what a cheap fuck
great comprehensive diagnostic video. liked testing fuel pressure at schrader valve. would add a clogged fuel filter is more common than fuel pump failure. testing for spark can also be done by removing a single spark plug and this allows trying a new plug. If working alone a remote starter switch is very helpful and only costs $15.
Thanks for watching. and your advice.
hi really loved your vid i changed my fuel pump on my chevy k1500 5.7 1990 &it still wont start my mechanic said it ''could'' be my computer if it is & i get 1 from a scrap yard how would you know if it's good or not ??? or are you just taking a chance . thanks
With anything from a junk yard you never know.Did you do any diagnostics?
well i don't know shit about that stuff but my mechanic is trying everything now he's looking at the wiring ,any help is greatly appreciated thanks..
What did u find out
Hi I have a 2010 tiida car it cranks but won't start no check light an fan coming on
Can u help me
i have a diesel a3, so no inertia switch for me. but i like the way you explained in this video and learned a lot. thank you.
My issue was a battery issue all I did was clean and tightened the connection and fired up with no problem at all. I do need a new battery tho
THANK YOU my car had the same problem, saved me hundreds of dollars
what if the check engine light doesn't come on?
then your ecu isnt commicating
I has 1988 Ford export gt which had a safety fuel switch located in the trunk that nice feature but pain if you didn't know great video diagnostic test 👍
What if my car is RPMs don’t jump when cranking the engine
That does not alway mean that there is a problem. Can you check the rpm on a scanner and also check for codes?
Nice one Jim, you showed how to logically get to the problem by eliminating what wasn't the problem. Trouble with us humans is we tend to jump in with the 'I know' frame of mind when, in hindsight, the answer is staring us in the face! Good video, please keep them coming!!
+Lincoln England Thank you for watching and your feedback. It's true even I jump to a conclusion when a car comes in and only after checking it further do i really find the problem.Thank you for your input.Jim
I just bought a 1979 Lincoln mark v she'll start and run but when you turn it off it won't crank again until weeks maybe months later
define "crank". do you mean it wont spin the engine over, or does it turn over and just not start? big difference. how is the carb? has it been rebuilt or is it full of varnish? have you checked out the choke and float settings?
Wow saved this guy some bucks........the first thing I would have done was replaced the fuel pump! .........good video!
On fords, if the check engine light goes out while cranking then the pcm is receiving pulses from the crank sensor.
helpful, thanks...........wb
Great methodical diagnostics I have a 1979 mgb that will not start while cranking but will run when key is in the on position either push start or if cranking fast it will start when you let go of the key. Am I looking at an ignition switch? The car sat for 3 years
I thought for sure it was going to be the fuel pump!!😵

Hi , love your videos you make it easy for me a women to understand as well so thank you for that, I have a 05 dodge neon 2.oL .no crank no com no start. Try everything to fix it . Not 1 thing has worked, so now I'm getting a new PCU/ EMC . Wish I had you as my mechanic I think you are wonderful just wanted to let you know.
how much did this repair cost the contractor
Tommy Castaneda 1000+ lol
Jim, your videos are great for helping me figure out what is wrong with my mom's Expedition! Narrowing it down little by little!
+MikkyoStudios If I can be of any help let me know.
what an excellent instructional video. Thank you ever so much. Regards from London, UK.
Glad you enjoyed it!
its a ford, all of them have this switch!
@@tomie2tone763 thank you for your response:), I tried it with a full can of starting fluid however it did not start
@@tomie2tone763 I uploaded a video on my channel of how the car sounds when attempting to start
@@Juaiv did attempt to start?
ford should have issued a recall on that switch.
+SteelCity1981, There very well may have been a recall on that switch and/or issues with it. Look it up in ALL Data or Mitchel's On Demand model specific repair and service database.
Autozone.com may be able to tell you or try a VIN number search for recall listings for your year, make and model.

hi Jim just wanted to tell you this video was the best !well specific we'll explain step by step thanyou realy help me,God bless you and take care
You are very welcome
