Thanks for putting the time in to making this video man. I just bought a 509 tactical last week and was just about to buy the apex trigger and decided to do a little more research on it first and that’s when I found this.
I have a regular 509 and the 509T. No problem with the trigger on either pistol. I wouldn’t want a trigger any lighter than 4lbs on a carry gun. Throw in a dose of adrenaline and a 3.5 trigger and you are likely to get an accidental discharge.
I got the apex heavy striker and shot 500 rds through mine and the trigger was fine. Apex also make a block now that’ll perfectly align you to the death pin to take it out perfectly every time.
I guess I got lucky, 30 minutes start to finish and the Apex trigger was in. 1000+ rounds later and zero issues with that pin walking or moving at all. I had more trouble with all the tiny ass parts in the sear and housing than the pin.
I just scored a unopened apex trigger for mine at a deal and I've already done the mcarbo springs and titanium striker and just springs made a big difference.
Yea thats my problem. On 1 hand I want to keep it stock because it's an EDC and I don't want easy trigger presses. On the other hand mine pulls at 7.5 - 8.5 Lbs which is too much. I'm on that fence, should I bother with it just to get a 5 - 6 Lbs trigger or just deal with it?
Glad I stumbled across your channel. The trigger was the one thing I wasn’t wild about too. Wish FN had worked with a company like Apex for a flat trigger from the factory like the Sig X Carry. Good review.
@@maximusjoseppi5904 apex now has a flat trigger & sear kit. It is pretty good so far. 500 rounds through the OG, now going to put 500 through on the Apex flat.
@@Otis43155peoples still breaking them using the jig,main thing it to make sure everything is lined up and there's no gaps between the frame and what ever it rests on and don't try and beat it out fast. I slowly increased force on the hits till it was enough to get it moving.
Two things: 1. Buy your trigger directly from Apex and you will never have issues with returns/warranty claims for a defect. 2. The Apex trigger is night and day better than the stock trigger, and 100% worth the hassle of removing the pin. I've done it on 2 different 509s and am about to do it on a 3rd, and it's honestly not that bad. I would not try it without the Apex disassembly block which is an extra $50, but that's much cheaper than shipping it to Apex and it works perfectly. I don't have any issue with people who choose to keep and train with the stock trigger, but I don't think anyone should be afraid of putting in the Apex trigger if you're using appropriate tools. Apex's tutorial videos are more than sufficient and if you take your time and are careful, this isn't that bad of a swap. First one took me 1.5 hours, second time it was maybe 30 minutes. If you're paranoid about the pin scuffing, you can also buy a replacement pin kit from Apex to go with the trigger.
Most of this type of work is no where near as bad as what guys make it out to be, it's mostly made over as so hard because of three main factors 1: they will not spend what is required to get the right tools and equiptment to do the stuff the right way, 2: they lack the skills and knowledge of how stuff works in general,,,,guns being even more so in this catagory by a mile, and 3: they have the basic coordination somewhere on the level of a monkey try to hump a football at best.
I just picked one up today. My trigger pull weight is at 5.5 lbs and I can live with it. Thanks for the video. I was thinking about purchasing an apex trigger but it's just not worth the hassle. Definitely not a PPQ trigger. I put 200 rounds down range this afternoon and I had a couple failures of the slide to locking on last round. Could of been my grip don't know for sure. I had a good experience with it on the first range day. Decent accuracy with an RMR. Good information thanks.
I had the same issue with the slide not locking back on my 509 on the last round too but after it happening a few times and my buddy watching me shoot we came to a 95% conclusion that I was unintentionally putting pressure on the slide release lever as I was shooting so when it ran out and it was time for the slide to lock back I was not letting it do that because I was pushing the slide release. So I worked on my thumb placement and after a few days I didn’t have the issue anymore. That being said, idk if that’s the issue you are having but maybe try a tinny bit different thumb placement
I got mine in with ease I have an apex armor block with the base and used a metal smith hammer over the leg of my work bench “Boom” out she came! Sorry you had bad luck but I think if you have the right tools and the right setup it’s not that bad... good luck to anyone who wants to try it out get the right tools for the job and be patient
Gotta watch the video friend. It's not about tools, it's about tolerances. The pin is designed to not come out without deformation. Gun Smiths are even refusing to install this trigger cause it's a matter of what will break first, the pin or your frame. Glad it worked out for you, highly recommend you change your pin after removal as it may walk out now.
Watching the video leads me to believe that Apex them selves are using the pin that was removed originally from the firearm after installing the new trigger without replacing it. Also the tools do have an effect on the outcome as they clearly stated in the video but thanks for responding!
@@plukensteinpaint if you watch Apex's video and read what FN tells you about the gun, they specifically tell you to replace the pin once removed. Look on their respective websites and TH-cam channel.
Maximus Joseppi thanks I have looked and that is true. The video “how to get that FN pin out” he did say that is what the manufacturer suggested but he also said they have been reusing the pin with success. I have attempted to purchase a replacement for it but it’s sold out everywhere I have found it for sale. So hopefully I won’t have an issue with it until I can buy one once again thanks for the video and reply I never wanted you to think I didn’t do my homework I just had success with the install. Also I’d took your advice I removed the pin before I opened the package for the trigger so I could return it if needed and got black as to avoid the finish issue I also picked it up from a company that has free returns! Looking forward to more videos from you!
Thank you VERY MUCH for the heads up on this. I have worked on quite a few guns but still learning and beginning on some more challenging things and this definitely would've been one of those things causing a LOT of frustrations and likely discouraged future work. So again... THANK YOU
I was going to say "Just get yourself a CZ" then WHaaaam you broke out the P10c..... Excellent video and excellent information. I have friends who swear by the apex trigger. I have yet to install an aftermarket trigger in a striker fired pistol.
Hey man, thanks, big fan of your videos too. Haha ya, the p10c is quite awesome. I install all my own triggers in my p10c, VP9, hk45, vp9sk, g20, rifles etc.. this is the first time I've had trouble but that's because it's intended in the design. Some guys have been lucky and some have destroyed their guns trying to remove that pin.. either way it's a good trigger, just a bit heavy, so I don't think we're missing out too much! Thank you!!!! I just got my 509 and I wondered the same thing.. the trigger was kind of hard to press... compared to my el "chepo" Taurus G3C.... but the gun itself shoots very nice, I just need to get used to the "heavier" trigger... GOOD VIDEO!!!
No trigger snob here. FN guns are built like tanks. I actually like the FN trigger however I did change out the trigger on my FN FNS9 to the Apex trigger. I had a local gunsmith do mine. 5 minute drive and took him an hour. $75 later, new gun with awesome trigger. Just recently got the 509 Tactical and I am ordering the Apex for it as well and told my gunsmith to get ready and he said that he can probably do it in 30 min this time now that he knows how to install them. Love FN.
Great video! I actually switched my trigger to an apex tactical and installed it before I shot it. Yeah, that front pin was a bear..... Fortunately, Fram is still in tact and working as expected. Thanks for sharing. Just sub'd.
I had a problem and Apex took care of me. They have been great to deal with. They sent a replacement and a pre paid shipping label to return the old one.. Fast and friendly folks at APEX
I just put an Apex trigger in mine. It wasn't that difficult and was totally worth the effort and money. The front pin was a pain in the ass, but with some muscle and patience it came out
It's not difficult at all, no. You are at the mercy of tolerances. The pins aren't designed to come out, so if they do, you got lucky and the pin deformed before your frame broke. Glad it worked out for you, it hasn't for a lot of people. You should replace your pin now that you removed it, good luck.
I’m not hearing anything about this issue anymore. My gunsmith said that he has even done a couple of them now, and that he would be happy to do mine and is fully confident that it will not have issues.
I Just Put A Apex Trigger In Mine.. If You By The Jig Its A Fairly Easy Job.. Hardest Part For Me Was Installing The Extension Spring Back Into The Sear Housing Cause The Spring Is So Small.. But Save Yourself Some Money Do It Yourself Just Watch The Apex Installation Video👍🏾
I installed my trigger in 30 minutes using a roll of duct tape, two different size punches and a hammer. It's really not as difficult as some people make it out to be.

I know the video is old but anyone not wanting to change the trigger but has one thats 7+ lbs,you can just add the mcarbo sping kit to the sear block and itll take 3lbs off the trigger and you dont have to take that pin out. It made s huge difference just doing the sping kit on mine. Luckily i got my pin out with some finesse.
I’ve owned dozens of firearms, everything from long range rifles, to assault rifles, 1911s to striker fired pistols. Glocks, SA, Sig, FN, you name it. I don’t understand the negative talk about the FN 509 Tactical trigger, I’ve now owned 2 of these and in both cases the trigger is hands down the best striker fired trigger out of the box that I’ve ever experienced.
then you havent experienced many triggers haha... glocks have horrendous triggers, springfield armory have horrendous triggers, sigs have bad triggers, and FN has mediocre triggers. try good guns like the PDP, VP9, FN reflex, P10C, caniks have great triggers but theyre crap guns.
Maximus Joseppi yes must be what I was lucky enough to get. My duty gun for my department is the gen 5 Glock 17, I have a cz p10c and have had many other guns including my old duty gun the p229 and I had a p229 legion and I would put my 509 trigger up there with any of them
I had alot of trouble putting my Apex trigger in but i got it finally and its worth it for me, but it is the hardest pin ive ever had the displeasure of working with
I put ~2500 rounds on my FNS9 the trigger is pretty nice now. My 509 got way better after ~1000 rounds. By the time I get my 509 to ~2500 rounds it should be a great trigger. Interested in the MCARBO springs.
I tried a 509c at a store demo basically it’s a dead pistol. I thought the trigger on that one felt great but who knows how many times it’s been cycled and had the trigger pulled.
@@whatfreedom7 who cares how many times,,,,,, these things are meant to be USED not looked at just sitting there,,,,40 years plus owning and shooting guns and I've owned more than a few that others gave up on because they were supposedly "used so much" or accuracy is degrading the barrel must be "shot out" and all the other mindless BULLSHIT guys try to say and with just a good cleaning and servicing have been so of the VERY best guns I've ever owned PERIOD,,,like my first ever carry gun in my life some 35+ years ago a spanish millitary surplus star BM pistol that was well worn when I got it,,,,,that I proceeded to shoot and carry for nearly 15 years that had sooooo freakin many rounds put through it that I don't even want to think about that number,,,,when you shake that gun now it rattles like a paint can and the slide rail fit is so loose you'd think the slide would just fall of,,,but guess what it still runs like a champ and has plenty enough accuracy left to satisfy most any shooter at normal joe blow skill level could do with any gun, no I wouldn't run anything other than normal pressure rounds no plus p stuff for it but with that in mind I wouldn't hesitate to put it in dailly carry service if it was all I had, guys get WAYYYYY to hung up on thinking about "wearing" out a gun.
All you need is a 1/16 pin punch 1/32 pin punch a 16 oz hammer a large wide roll of masking tape and a tiny bit of patience just did an FNS-40 was relatively easy
Haha, ya man, you gotta watch the video.. Not just comment. That's not all you need. You need to get lucky with tolerances because the pin is designed not to come out. It's a locking pin. Many people, including gunsmiths, have broken frames trying to remove the pin doing everything correctly with the correct tools. Glad it worked out for you though, it hasn't for a lot of people. Be sure to get a new pin cause now it won't function as it was designed and could back out.
I don’t notice the gritty take up because the wall is so definable that I go right to it every time and I don’t notice it. I do want an apex but scared of the install. My trigger breaks super heavy and at first I sucked hard compared to my p320 and p365 with optic. I forced myself to get good at shooting it and the experience improved my grip and trigger control
I bought a 509 MRD and the striker broke while I was doing my daily dryfiring exercises. Replaced it with Apex HD striker since I don’t want to send it to FN for this simple replacement. Love the RMR mounting solution but hate the vagues of the trigger return spring.
Did mine on my kitchen table, installed Edge flat trigger... I contacted a gunsmith and they said "No", so I watched some videos and it took all but 25min to install! Just buy a new pin, only $6!
It's not about the right tools, it's about tolerances. Glad you got lucky. Highly recommend replacing your pin as recommended by FN. Once removed, they no longer function as intended and can walk under use. Good luck
@@malcolmplatt3768 well just because you're doing something wrong and it hasn't failed yet, doesn't mean it's not wrong. The manufacturer of the gun you're shooting who designed the pin you are talking about designed it for one time use. Facts are facts kid
They sell a disassembly jig to take that pin out. Not that bad if you buy from apex direct. Wouldn't write it off for a shady vendor and wouldn't take the pin out with out the jig. Way cheaper than sending it to them to do it.
I love my 509. I’m not actually trying to covert it to fully auto. However it’s like pulling teeth to find a video that explains it flat out. Just curious what to do and not to do?!
Is that a full size? If so it left to right to knock out that pin. The mid and compact are right to left. I knocked it out of a couple 509s with no problem. The pin is also reusable as long as you make heavy taps. If you lightly knock it out it will mess it up. I don't use the jig either. I believe your problem was knocking it the wrong way.
The new midsize 509 had zero issues getting that pin out. Idk if it was just my gun or something new with the midsize. Took me about 20 mins to change it out. Maybe it was just luck,, idk.The P10C u brought out doesn't have a stock trigger so the comparison isn't a fair one.
The stock trigger on a p10c is astronomically better. And that was just a different trigger shoe, same internals. Glad it worked out for you changing the trigger on the 509, definitely it's only glaring downside
I just got a FN 509 Compact MDR. I looked at getting the Apex trigger since I installed one of their triggers on my Glock 22 and have liked it. I saw the video on the Apex Trigger install for this pistol and it looks challenging. I also own a CZ P10C that has an amazing trigger. Long story short. Keep the FN 509 as is. Thanks for the intel.
Press is the only way . I broke my frame on my midsize . I ended up pressing it out . I found that hammering it deforms the end of the pin to the point that once it get to the locking block it can’t get though due to the deformed end being bigger then the locking block hole .
Some guys have been lucky and some guys haven't. Good to see your frame is fine but I would recommend getting a new locking block pin after removal. Good luck! Thanks for the comment
@@attiliocavallino1867 nah man, ive done better than that haha. the pin isnt designed to be removed, if it can, its simply luck of the draw. typically pins like this have to be drilled through the center to get collapsed to take out. did you watch the video? ive already explained this stuff. good luck
@@maximusjoseppi5904 the pin is alot easier to remove in the non tactical models. Something about the tactical pin makes you need a hydraulic press to remove it
Just bought a 509c and I like the gun a lot but the trigger was awful. I put the apex in myself and had a bitch of a time taking out that pin then I mushroomed the end getting it back in. After doing all that I came across the striker issue where people have had their strikers just completely sheer in half. Ordered the apex heavy duty striker and am waiting, wish I had done more research, never had any issues like this with a Glock.
Someone being honest about the awful trigger weight on the FNs. Thank you. Btw M*CARBO has a spring kit for them, which makes a bit more bearable, and does not require taking out the trigger to install.
@@John-uo1qf The striker and the sear need to be polished. Also, the trigger scratches the barrel. The Apex sear should be smoother, but I recommend polishing the striker thoroughly (I was too lazy). Of course, keep the M*CARBO springs.
Look at the take down for an Honor Defense HG9. That pin you are speaking of looks almost identical to the aforementioned, but Honor Defense designed their pin to come out and remove the entire trigger assembly.
You're making assumptions about the gun not being user serviceable. FN never specifically said that the frame should not be disassembled.... I've asked. The pin is intended to be tough to remove, Armorers all across the country are taught to and do frequently remove the front locking block pin. It's a matter of technique. Saying that you know what you're doing here because you've build AR-15's(which is the most modular rifle in the world) is like saying that you're qualified to build a home because you've built Lego kits.
No I'm not, and no you didn't. FN will tell you the gun was designed to not be user serviceable and the manual will tell you not to take your gun apart. I've spoken to FN and they explained the design of the pin. So you either are lying or you spoke to an incorrect source. Apex themselves have said they spoke to FN as well and that the gun was not intended to be user serviceable haha.... So you're wrong even by the words of the company you're trying to stick up for?
And gunsmiths across the country have refused to install this trigger, some have broken guns, and sometimes drill the pin out. I know because I talked to a lot of them about this issue prior to making the video which you'd know if you watched it 👍🏻
@@maximusjoseppi5904 I've spoken to the Engineers at FN, not the Customer Service reps. Of coarse Apex has to say that the gun is not intended to be user serviceable, it's called liability.

I started out shooting with my trusty dao p250c. I’ve come to love super long trigger travels and 8-10lb pull weights. I like the duty style triggers and have grown comfortable with the added layer of safety. My 509c/t is my first and only striker fired pistol. Going from a hammer to a striker was…well…weird. My stock trigger broke at 8.15lbs and that I’m ok with..but that grit…man…frikin gross. I’m still considering very strongly to sell my 509 and get a nice Sig 229 legion compact rxp. I have found from what I believe to be the main culprit to my grit. Striker block when locked to striker makes the block sit at an angle to to spring weight etc etc. in turn makes the striker block rub the striker block housing wall. Lock your slide back with your striker block engaged and look at the block, it’s most likely offset, now lightly pressed the block right about to wear it releases the striker. Same exact noise I was hearing and the feel was the same. Just my 2cents
@@maximusjoseppi5904 That's the only negative I see but its better than trying to remove that stupid pin and cracking your pistol frame. I didn't do a before and after trigger pull measurement don't need it I know it feels under five lbs.
Getting that pin out isn’t the problem, trying to set the pin back in is the issue. It’s twice as hard to put back in then taking out. My trick is to use the apex trigger to hammer the pin back in.
i mean, FN clearly states this is a pin designed to not come out and if you do take it out, you need to buy a new one as you will have deformed it slightly. so careful with that, it could walk out if you didnt buy a new one.
Fantastic gun, was playing with one yesterday. Definitely top notch if you like that mid size grip for carry. I don't have a problem with concealing this gun and I carry it every day so I don't need one but a lot of people like the smaller grip.

There is a trick fix to the problem without having to take the the pin out to change the trigger.Take the slide off and then set the trigger and pull it and you will notice how much easier the trigger pull is.After doing that take the barrel and spring out of slide and do the same thing and you will notice the trigger pull is easy and smoothe as well.the problem is that one lip on the bottom of the barrel causing the issue.I just took a small file and went across it a few times and then used 400 grit sandpaper across it and it took care of the problem.
Do you use the yellow or silver recoil spring? I just bought my FDE 509 tactical and it came with the yellow spring in it but I'm using unsuppressed with Winchester white box 115 gr mostly. Havnt shot it yet.
Mines on order and it’s coming in Monday I can tell from your video I’m probably gonna just sell it right off the bat because I hate heavy triggers. I had no idea the Apex cheer was so expensive to get installed I don’t know why F and would make a gun like this nobody likes heavy triggers like that.
Thanks for the warning. This one one of the guns I've been considering, I think ai may wait a bit. Might I ask, what made you switch away from the CZ P10c? Did you have reliability issued? Do you just like FN(understandable)? Novelty factor? Extra safety of the more 'duty style' trigger weight? Just wondering. I'm looking pretty seriously at the P10 series for my next carry and home defense pistols.

It comes out fine. You have to take the TAKE DOWN LEVER off . Which Apex says to as well. No reason to mess it up like the guy in the video did. I have mechanical skills but not professional ones : Mine came out easily : Don't misunderstand. The Pin is in there tight : But it comes out by using your hammer like a Whip.Not hard blows : Sorta snappy ones. The Thread I directed you to says he used a 5OZ hammer. A little late to answer your question, but the only reason that I didn’t purchase the P10C is that I already own one. I wanted to get an optics ready pistol, and the FN 509 fit the bill. Still on the fence if I should get an optics cut for the CZ P10C. Can’t go wrong with optics ready CZ P10C.
I don't like cowitness on any of my guns, pistol or rifle. The trijicon RMR type 2 is so reliable, the chances of it ever not working are so small that it's a totally acceptable risk for me for how much better your sight picture is. The sights are mainly there for the tritium or in case I want to take the optic off.

Part of being a good retailer is making situations like that right. Making the customer go through the hassle when they paid you full price for a new product is ridiculous. Even optics planet doesn't pull that shit.
I agree that it is not a simple task and that there maybe tolerance differences between guns however it took me about ten minutes of hammering to figure out what I needed to do. The answer for me was not to swing harder and get inpatient and damage your gun. My solution was to get the pin started placing the gun over vinyl on top of concrete slab until pin protrudes 1/8" then drill a small hole into 1/4" steel added blocking as necessary. The area around the pin needs to be fully supported. It took me less than an hour. I re-used the original pin it's not going anywhere! Fn is just covering their butts by making you replace it. Cider block really dude
ya man, some of them will not come out no matter what you do. gunsmiths have to drill into the pin to collapse it often and if you removed it, you changed it dimensionally. thats why fn says to replace it, which you should do, the pin is cheap enough. good luck either way, glad you got it out, a lot of people cant.
Mine broke at a long, gritty 7.25lbs. FN should be embarrassed to let a $1000.00 firearm leave their factory like that.

I sent mine to apex for $34 shipping cost and they got it back to me in about 5 business days, trigger installed and no issues at all.
what was the cost for them them to install the trigger??

same here! minimal effort during disassembly but re-assembling that sear was a bit frustrating!

ya, the factory trigger is great, especially if you get one of the lighter ones.
I think I'll leave my Stock trigger in, besides not like I shoot in competition it's purely a self defense/ range gun

@@maximusjoseppi5904 apex now has a flat trigger & sear kit. It is pretty good so far. 500 rounds through the OG, now going to put 500 through on the Apex flat.
just a FYI Apex now makes a jig/block that you put the frame in to remove this pin!! SO YES THE RIGHT TOOLS DO MATTER!! thanks for the video

@@Otis43155peoples still breaking them using the jig,main thing it to make sure everything is lined up and there's no gaps between the frame and what ever it rests on and don't try and beat it out fast.
I slowly increased force on the hits till it was enough to get it moving.
Two things:
1. Buy your trigger directly from Apex and you will never have issues with returns/warranty claims for a defect.
2. The Apex trigger is night and day better than the stock trigger, and 100% worth the hassle of removing the pin. I've done it on 2 different 509s and am about to do it on a 3rd, and it's honestly not that bad. I would not try it without the Apex disassembly block which is an extra $50, but that's much cheaper than shipping it to Apex and it works perfectly.
I don't have any issue with people who choose to keep and train with the stock trigger, but I don't think anyone should be afraid of putting in the Apex trigger if you're using appropriate tools. Apex's tutorial videos are more than sufficient and if you take your time and are careful, this isn't that bad of a swap. First one took me 1.5 hours, second time it was maybe 30 minutes. If you're paranoid about the pin scuffing, you can also buy a replacement pin kit from Apex to go with the trigger.
Most of this type of work is no where near as bad as what guys make it out to be, it's mostly made over as so hard because of three main factors 1: they will not spend what is required to get the right tools and equiptment to do the stuff the right way, 2: they lack the skills and knowledge of how stuff works in general,,,,guns being even more so in this catagory by a mile, and 3: they have the basic coordination somewhere on the level of a monkey try to hump a football at best.
I just picked one up today. My trigger pull weight is at 5.5 lbs and I can live with it. Thanks for the video. I was thinking about purchasing an apex trigger but it's just not worth the hassle. Definitely not a PPQ trigger. I put 200 rounds down range this afternoon and I had a couple failures of the slide to locking on last round. Could of been my grip don't know for sure. I had a good experience with it on the first range day. Decent accuracy with an RMR. Good information thanks.
I had the same issue with the slide not locking back on my 509 on the last round too but after it happening a few times and my buddy watching me shoot we came to a 95% conclusion that I was unintentionally putting pressure on the slide release lever as I was shooting so when it ran out and it was time for the slide to lock back I was not letting it do that because I was pushing the slide release. So I worked on my thumb placement and after a few days I didn’t have the issue anymore. That being said, idk if that’s the issue you are having but maybe try a tinny bit different thumb placement
It's the mag. Had the same problem. Weak mag spring.
My gunsmith charged me 1 hour to install the Apex Trigger on my 509T. It made the gun perfect.
Yea mines charging me $40 for an hour install. Sucks bc I wont have it for about a month.

I got mine in with ease I have an apex armor block with the base and used a metal smith hammer over the leg of my work bench “Boom” out she came! Sorry you had bad luck but I think if you have the right tools and the right setup it’s not that bad... good luck to anyone who wants to try it out get the right tools for the job and be patient
Gotta watch the video friend. It's not about tools, it's about tolerances. The pin is designed to not come out without deformation.
Gun Smiths are even refusing to install this trigger cause it's a matter of what will break first, the pin or your frame.
Glad it worked out for you, highly recommend you change your pin after removal as it may walk out now.
Watching the video leads me to believe that Apex them selves are using the pin that was removed originally from the firearm after installing the new trigger without replacing it. Also the tools do have an effect on the outcome as they clearly stated in the video but thanks for responding!

Maximus Joseppi thanks I have looked and that is true. The video “how to get that FN pin out” he did say that is what the manufacturer suggested but he also said they have been reusing the pin with success. I have attempted to purchase a replacement for it but it’s sold out everywhere I have found it for sale. So hopefully I won’t have an issue with it until I can buy one once again thanks for the video and reply I never wanted you to think I didn’t do my homework I just had success with the install. Also I’d took your advice I removed the pin before I opened the package for the trigger so I could return it if needed and got black as to avoid the finish issue I also picked it up from a company that has free returns! Looking forward to more videos from you!

Thank you VERY MUCH for the heads up on this. I have worked on quite a few guns but still learning and beginning on some more challenging things and this definitely would've been one of those things causing a LOT of frustrations and likely discouraged future work.

Haha ya, the p10c is quite awesome. I install all my own triggers in my p10c, VP9, hk45, vp9sk, g20, rifles etc.. this is the first time I've had trouble but that's because it's intended in the design.
Some guys have been lucky and some have destroyed their guns trying to remove that pin.. either way it's a good trigger, just a bit heavy, so I don't think we're missing out too much!

No trigger snob here. FN guns are built like tanks. I actually like the FN trigger however I did change out the trigger on my FN FNS9 to the Apex trigger. I had a local gunsmith do mine. 5 minute drive and took him an hour. $75 later, new gun with awesome trigger. Just recently got the 509 Tactical and I am ordering the Apex for it as well and told my gunsmith to get ready and he said that he can probably do it in 30 min this time now that he knows how to install them. Love FN.

Great video! I actually switched my trigger to an apex tactical and installed it before I shot it. Yeah, that front pin was a bear..... Fortunately, Fram is still in tact and working as expected. Thanks for sharing. Just sub'd.

I just put an Apex trigger in mine. It wasn't that difficult and was totally worth the effort and money. The front pin was a pain in the ass, but with some muscle and patience it came out
It's not difficult at all, no. You are at the mercy of tolerances. The pins aren't designed to come out, so if they do, you got lucky and the pin deformed before your frame broke.
Glad it worked out for you, it hasn't for a lot of people. You should replace your pin now that you removed it, good luck.

I’m not hearing anything about this issue anymore. My gunsmith said that he has even done a couple of them now, and that he would be happy to do mine and is fully confident that it will not have issues.
I Just Put A Apex Trigger In Mine.. If You By The Jig Its A Fairly Easy Job.. Hardest Part For Me Was Installing The Extension Spring Back Into The Sear Housing Cause The Spring Is So Small.. But Save Yourself Some Money Do It Yourself Just Watch The Apex Installation Video👍🏾

I installed my trigger in 30 minutes using a roll of duct tape, two different size punches and a hammer. It's really not as difficult as some people make it out to be.

I know the video is old but anyone not wanting to change the trigger but has one thats 7+ lbs,you can just add the mcarbo sping kit to the sear block and itll take 3lbs off the trigger and you dont have to take that pin out.
It made s huge difference just doing the sping kit on mine.
Luckily i got my pin out with some finesse.
I’ve owned dozens of firearms, everything from long range rifles, to assault rifles, 1911s to striker fired pistols. Glocks, SA, Sig, FN, you name it. I don’t understand the negative talk about the FN 509 Tactical trigger, I’ve now owned 2 of these and in both cases the trigger is hands down the best striker fired trigger out of the box that I’ve ever experienced.
then you havent experienced many triggers haha... glocks have horrendous triggers, springfield armory have horrendous triggers, sigs have bad triggers, and FN has mediocre triggers. try good guns like the PDP, VP9, FN reflex, P10C, caniks have great triggers but theyre crap guns.

Maximus Joseppi yes must be what I was lucky enough to get. My duty gun for my department is the gen 5 Glock 17, I have a cz p10c and have had many other guns including my old duty gun the p229 and I had a p229 legion and I would put my 509 trigger up there with any of them

I put ~2500 rounds on my FNS9 the trigger is pretty nice now. My 509 got way better after ~1000 rounds. By the time I get my 509 to ~2500 rounds it should be a great trigger. Interested in the MCARBO springs.
I tried a 509c at a store demo basically it’s a dead pistol. I thought the trigger on that one felt great but who knows how many times it’s been cycled and had the trigger pulled.

You shouldn't have to put thousands of rounds through a gun for the trigger to get decent at best.
All you need is a 1/16 pin punch 1/32 pin punch a 16 oz hammer a large wide roll of masking tape and a tiny bit of patience just did an FNS-40 was relatively easy
Haha, ya man, you gotta watch the video.. Not just comment. That's not all you need. You need to get lucky with tolerances because the pin is designed not to come out. It's a locking pin.
Many people, including gunsmiths, have broken frames trying to remove the pin doing everything correctly with the correct tools. Glad it worked out for you though, it hasn't for a lot of people. Be sure to get a new pin cause now it won't function as it was designed and could back out.
Mine wasn't hard to install. The front pin took some convincing but other than that it was not bad at all.
I don’t notice the gritty take up because the wall is so definable that I go right to it every time and I don’t notice it. I do want an apex but scared of the install. My trigger breaks super heavy and at first I sucked hard compared to my p320 and p365 with optic. I forced myself to get good at shooting it and the experience improved my grip and trigger control
I bought a 509 MRD and the striker broke while I was doing my daily dryfiring exercises. Replaced it with Apex HD striker since I don’t want to send it to FN for this simple replacement. Love the RMR mounting solution but hate the vagues of the trigger return spring.
With today's prices for ammo, who can afford to run 500-1K round through this gun!?!?!?????

Did mine on my kitchen table, installed Edge flat trigger... I contacted a gunsmith and they said "No", so I watched some videos and it took all but 25min to install! Just buy a new pin, only $6!

It's not about the right tools, it's about tolerances.
Glad you got lucky. Highly recommend replacing your pin as recommended by FN. Once removed, they no longer function as intended and can walk under use.

They sell a disassembly jig to take that pin out. Not that bad if you buy from apex direct. Wouldn't write it off for a shady vendor and wouldn't take the pin out with out the jig. Way cheaper than sending it to them to do it.
I love my 509. I’m not actually trying to covert it to fully auto. However it’s like pulling teeth to find a video that explains it flat out. Just curious what to do and not to do?!
Is that a full size? If so it left to right to knock out that pin. The mid and compact are right to left. I knocked it out of a couple 509s with no problem. The pin is also reusable as long as you make heavy taps. If you lightly knock it out it will mess it up. I don't use the jig either. I believe your problem was knocking it the wrong way.
I installed one with punchs hammer and a roll of tape took a few knocks to get pin out but nothing crazy

The new midsize 509 had zero issues getting that pin out. Idk if it was just my gun or something new with the midsize. Took me about 20 mins to change it out. Maybe it was just luck,, idk.The P10C u brought out doesn't have a stock trigger so the comparison isn't a fair one.
The stock trigger on a p10c is astronomically better. And that was just a different trigger shoe, same internals.

I just got a FN 509 Compact MDR. I looked at getting the Apex trigger since I installed one of their triggers on my Glock 22 and have liked it. I saw the video on the Apex Trigger install for this pistol and it looks challenging. I also own a CZ P10C that has an amazing trigger. Long story short. Keep the FN 509 as is. Thanks for the intel.
Hickok45 loves the FN triggers and he's a Glock guy. As a matter of fact he purchased an FN 509m he liked it so much.
Press is the only way . I broke my frame on my midsize . I ended up pressing it out . I found that hammering it deforms the end of the pin to the point that once it get to the locking block it can’t get though due to the deformed end being bigger then the locking block hole .
I installed my apex twice. Forgot the sear no problem
Some guys have been lucky and some guys haven't. Good to see your frame is fine but I would recommend getting a new locking block pin after removal.

@@attiliocavallino1867 nah man, ive done better than that haha. the pin isnt designed to be removed, if it can, its simply luck of the draw. typically pins like this have to be drilled through the center to get collapsed to take out.

Just bought a 509c and I like the gun a lot but the trigger was awful. I put the apex in myself and had a bitch of a time taking out that pin then I mushroomed the end getting it back in. After doing all that I came across the striker issue where people have had their strikers just completely sheer in half. Ordered the apex heavy duty striker and am waiting, wish I had done more research, never had any issues like this with a Glock.
Best thing is to leave it OEM, learn to live with the stock trigger. Very simple.

Btw M*CARBO has a spring kit for them, which makes a bit more bearable, and does not require taking out the trigger to install.
A bit more bearable? It cuts the weight of the trigger break in half. The combo of the apex trigger + m*carbo springs is phenomenal.

@@John-uo1qf The striker and the sear need to be polished. Also, the trigger scratches the barrel. The Apex sear should be smoother, but I recommend polishing the striker thoroughly (I was too lazy). Of course, keep the M*CARBO springs.
Look at the take down for an Honor Defense HG9. That pin you are speaking of looks almost identical to the aforementioned, but Honor Defense designed their pin to come out and remove the entire trigger assembly.
Haha, well I guess that's why it looks ALMOST like it and not exactly like it. FN designed it not to come out. So take it up with their engineers.
My gunsmith had FN send him the tool so he could install it. Adding that Apex trigger makes a world of difference! It takes the gun from good to great

You're making assumptions about the gun not being user serviceable. FN never specifically said that the frame should not be disassembled.... I've asked. The pin is intended to be tough to remove, Armorers all across the country are taught to and do frequently remove the front locking block pin. It's a matter of technique. Saying that you know what you're doing here because you've build AR-15's(which is the most modular rifle in the world) is like saying that you're qualified to build a home because you've built Lego kits.
No I'm not, and no you didn't. FN will tell you the gun was designed to not be user serviceable and the manual will tell you not to take your gun apart.
I've spoken to FN and they explained the design of the pin.
So you either are lying or you spoke to an incorrect source.
Apex themselves have said they spoke to FN as well and that the gun was not intended to be user serviceable haha.... So you're wrong even by the words of the company you're trying to stick up for?

I started out shooting with my trusty dao p250c. I’ve come to love super long trigger travels and 8-10lb pull weights. I like the duty style triggers and have grown comfortable with the added layer of safety. My 509c/t is my first and only striker fired pistol. Going from a hammer to a striker was…well…weird. My stock trigger broke at 8.15lbs and that I’m ok with..but that grit…man…frikin gross. I’m still considering very strongly to sell my 509 and get a nice Sig 229 legion compact rxp. I have found from what I believe to be the main culprit to my grit. Striker block when locked to striker makes the block sit at an angle to to spring weight etc etc. in turn makes the striker block rub the striker block housing wall. Lock your slide back with your striker block engaged and look at the block, it’s most likely offset, now lightly pressed the block right about to wear it releases the striker. Same exact noise I was hearing and the feel was the same. Just my 2cents

Getting that pin out isn’t the problem, trying to set the pin back in is the issue. It’s twice as hard to put back in then taking out. My trick is to use the apex trigger to hammer the pin back in.
i mean, FN clearly states this is a pin designed to not come out and if you do take it out, you need to buy a new one as you will have deformed it slightly. so careful with that, it could walk out if you didnt buy a new one.

Fantastic gun, was playing with one yesterday. Definitely top notch if you like that mid size grip for carry.
I don't have a problem with concealing this gun and I carry it every day so I don't need one but a lot of people like the smaller grip.

Trigger on the 509t is not smooth at all pretty expensive for a disappointing teigger
There is a trick fix to the problem without having to take the the pin out to change the trigger.Take the slide off and then set the trigger and pull it and you will notice how much easier the trigger pull is.After doing that take the barrel and spring out of slide and do the same thing and you will notice the trigger pull is easy and smoothe as well.the problem is that one lip on the bottom of the barrel causing the issue.I just took a small file and went across it a few times and then used 400 grit sandpaper across it and it took care of the problem.
Do you use the yellow or silver recoil spring? I just bought my FDE 509 tactical and it came with the yellow spring in it but I'm using unsuppressed with Winchester white box 115 gr mostly. Havnt shot it yet.

It comes out fine. You have to take the TAKE DOWN LEVER off . Which Apex says to as well. No reason to mess it up like the guy in the video did. I have mechanical skills but not professional ones : Mine came out easily : Don't misunderstand. The Pin is in there tight : But it comes out by using your hammer like a Whip.Not hard blows : Sorta snappy ones. The Thread I directed you to says he used a 5OZ hammer. A little late to answer your question, but the only reason that I didn’t purchase the P10C is that I already own one. I wanted to get an optics ready pistol, and the FN 509 fit the bill. Still on the fence if I should get an optics cut for the CZ P10C. Can’t go wrong with optics ready CZ P10C.

I don't like cowitness on any of my guns, pistol or rifle. The trijicon RMR type 2 is so reliable, the chances of it ever not working are so small that it's a totally acceptable risk for me for how much better your sight picture is.
The sights are mainly there for the tritium or in case I want to take the optic off.
Took mine to a gunsmith only got charged 40$ to put in my apex trigger
how do you feel about the rear rails being made of plastic and the ejector being plastic too?
Also you can push the trigger forward with your finger very easy
Both are steel and the rear rail is about 3x bigger than your glock.

@@LegionPrecision no, you sent a bad product. Shouldn't be on the consumer if the product was never installed and arrived in poor condition. Part of being a good retailer is making situations like that right. Making the customer go through the hassle when they paid you full price for a new product is ridiculous. Even optics planet doesn't pull that shit.
I agree that it is not a simple task and that there maybe tolerance differences between guns however it took me about ten minutes of hammering to figure out what I needed to do. The answer for me was not to swing harder and get inpatient and damage your gun. My solution was to get the pin started placing the gun over vinyl on top of concrete slab until pin protrudes 1/8" then drill a small hole into 1/4" steel added blocking as necessary. The area around the pin needs to be fully supported. It took me less than an hour. I re-used the original pin it's not going anywhere! Fn is just covering their butts by making you replace it. ya man, some of them will not come out no matter what you do.
gunsmiths have to drill into the pin to collapse it often and if you removed it, you changed it dimensionally. thats why fn says to replace it, which you should do, the pin is cheap enough.
