    I was going to buy this firearm but now that I know about it's problems firing underwater I'll have to pass. I can't tell you how many times I've been ambushed underwater in the past by henchmen. So for now it's back to my trusty Walther PPK. Cheers and a good day to you gentlemen!

      t4t4s0l likely not a real issue there either. You can probably count on one hand the number of times an average American infantryman has used his pistol in combat. The number of times a soldier has dropped their pistol in water then picked it up firing immediately to save their life? Literally never

      @@mxxkxxg I think the overarching Idea is this: #1 while rare, it is possible. #2 there are much more survivable options out there. #3 there is no advantage to the 509 that makes up for this shortcoming.

      This 509 is a beast imo, prob the best out of the box pistol, blows Glock away in every category, my trigger was fine out of box, up there with the P10 and Vp9. Sights and Grip better than glock.

    Had a 509 for a while and it was a good gun. Once I decided to go with the P320 platform I sold it off. I used to run the FNS as well and it was a great gun in 40SW. I think the FNS, FNX and 509 are very quality built and would serve well. I also take into consideration the company's customer service. I always had great service from FN when needed.

    Haven’t shot my firearm in the pool in awhile. Need to get the FN 509 out and do some under water exploring and target shoot. 😂 I do own the 509 and the midsize. Enjoy them both even if they’re not effective in the pool. Good review though but not a deal breaker for me. Back to under water pool training. 😉

      I think this water test is a non issue whether you drop your weapon in a puddle or it gets ran over by a garbage truck in the middle of a firefight, If it doesn't go boom. Tap rack and go. There's a million reasons this could happen, getting submerged being the least likely. I bought the 509 as well.

    • @CheifDegenerate
      @CheifDegenerate 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I can relate to his mentality here. My carry gun get all it's use in woods and along streams or other bodies of water. If I walk through a stream I'd like to know that my gun will go boom if I have to use it there.
      Knowing that a simple tap and rack will get it going makes me feel better. I've had guns that would need you to remove the magazine and rack the slide a handful of times to clear enough water from the channel. You'd want to remove the magazine so you're not throwing good ammo away. If all I gotta do is throw one live round out and the water is cleared out enough to go bang then I'll deal.
      Maybe I'll drill a tiny hole under the striker channel like Glocks have. Give it somewhere to push the water out of. Either way I'm loving the way this gun feels and shoots otherwise. So I'll make it work or make due. Since I'm 99% more likely to use it on an aggressive woodland creature than a mass murderer with a gun I'm not that concerned. I won't be falling into any lakes while at the shopping mall in the bigger city.

    Notice: this truly is an awesome gun and I don't intend to "sling mud" (or sling water in this case) by any means or devalue those that use this gun. I do feel that it is important to note the issues that I had with this gun to give you a perspective as an end user of this weapon. Depending on your own carry situation and environment the issue I pointed out may not be a big deal. As a LEO around a lot of water, it is an issue for me so take it within context. Either way, this is good information to know if you happen to carry this weapon. I also did a full water test on this gun, which can be viewed here: th-cam.com/video/9wkQ2NOE7Rs/w-d-xo.html

      Do glocks run through thus test without the maritime springs

    • @jhelmsing
      @jhelmsing  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@boomee78 yes, in my experience a Glock may have 1-2 bobbles without maritime cups out of 10 cycles, which is acceptable and on par with most other striker guns I've tested. The 509 midsize, however, had 8 light strikes out of 10 which is proportionally more. It's not 100% of the time, but it's pretty often. Compound that with the fact that FNH doesn't have a "fix" for the issue like the maritime cups and it should be something to consider.

    • @MossyOakFreak

      I tested my 509s in a water bucket. Probably took me a second or two to get the gun out and raise on target. I've never had an issue with hydrolock, but my 509 does have a water channel hole under the striker channel. Maybe two or three seconds is enough for the channel to drain.

    • @jhelmsing
      @jhelmsing  5 ปีที่แล้ว

    I've been carrying the original 509 for 3 and a half years. It's an excellent carry pistol. I do agree that it does have hydro lock issues when submerged. However, on one occasion I fired it at the range in pouring rain with absolutely no issues. I also agree if part of your duties is to patrol a park with bodies of water then perhaps it's not the best duty weapon. Gr8 honest review. 🔫 🇺🇸

    Well, very solid review! You, Hickok45, Sootch00, etc.are in agreement regarding the trigger out of the box. Not a great trigger, until it gets fired to a couple hundred rounds. Everyone, that I watch says, "It feels like this gun just wants to shoot"? Guess, it has a mind of its own, lol!
    The water issue perhaps could be clarified, slightly? I'm in Florida, go into a store or restaurant or wherever, you come out into a monsoon! So you are soaked to the skin. Now, folks shouldn't really panic since your gun getting wet is different than being submerged in water! I held off on buying a 509 or FNS 9 because of the size. Yes, FNS 9 does come in a compact model, but I don't care for the large mag sleeve built into the FNS 9 Compact, but that's me.
    The other TWO downfalls on ANY FN carry pistols is spare mag prices and no real Customer Service! The gun has an issue you, "Pay the bill""! Shipping and most the time the repair bill itself! This is primarily due to the fact they service military and law enforcement worldwide, so a single customer, oh well we are NOT their, "Bread and Butter"! Colt isn't much better!
    Great review! Thank-you!
    Best to ya',,,,!

    Kinda like you said at the end, not a recall cuz it's not not.sl operating condition. I've sot it in the rain and no issues. Being totally submerged for a short period of time is what'll do it. I guess in all reality you never know, but I'm not too worried about it.

    I have not shark hunted with a pistol for like 10 years maybe...so this ‘fatal flaw’....has zero effect on me, I mean...REALISTICALLY, how often are you going to get your gun THAT wet....seriously! A little water is A LOT different than submerging it in water...I HIGHLY doubt that even super heavy rain would even effect it.

    Great review , i had a g19 gen 5 but i needed to sell it at the time , i loved that gun so much because of the size and the sleek new black design on the slide , i wanted to buy a brand new glock 19 gen 5 , i was really decided , but then i saw this video and i am really thinking about getting the FN , my only question is , wich one is more comfortable to conceal carry ? , i compare both and overall fn is just a little bit almost anything more heavier wider and taller , does that make it uncomfortable?? i had the sig p320 compact and that one was really uncomfortable compared to the glock , can you give me your opinion on that

    Make sure you are careful with what ammo you feed your FN 509c MRD with. Bought mine last month, 2 weeks later took it to the firing range for the first time and the frame/handle cracked. Sent it to FN and they said "sorry for your luck, must have been your ammo, warranty denied."
    Was shooting factory federal HST 9mm +P's and it was evidently too much for it.
    Wont sell me a replacement frame etc, its either buy a new gun or nothing.
    Retired LE after 35 years. Was using duty ammo that my glock 17 had no problem with. Totally disgusted with the company.
    Really really wanted to like this gun and maybe I just got a fluke but after this I will never buy another FN.

    Between the FNS & 509, it’s all about personal preferences. The real only down side to either the FNS & 509 is the cost of additional magazines! So FN, if you’re listening & wish to sell more pistols in the civilian market, reduce the prices for your pistol mags!! John Q. Public finds pistol mags in the mid $40 range unacceptable

    You did a good comparison to the Glock. However, If I wanted a Glock 19-ish (standard compact size poly-striker) non-Glock, the prime alternative would seem to be the Smith and Wesson M&P 2.0 Compact. That gun seems to have many of the same advantages as this gun (better ergos), but with likely a better trigger, and better third party support. Do you see anything about this gun that would recommend it over the Smith?

    Just when I finally decide on a gun, up pops something like this... It's not like firing after submersion would ever have even occurred to me, but it's not the best news. I would have thought the testing before they submitted it to the army would have included water tests? I know Hickok45 really likes it, and I'll basically just be plinking with it like he does, so it's definitely still a possibility...

  • @mcedd54

    What is the percentage of potential buyers of this pistol that are going to pass it by because it has difficulty firing after it's been submerged in water? A ridiculous baseline of function for 99.9% of us. Yes, and I think the Military Arms Channel "Torture Test" is a bit over the top as well.
    If I ever get killed in a gunfight in my house because I fell in a mud puddle and my pistol then failed to fire, I'll let you know. Then you can tell me "I told you so".
