I love my 883 Iron. It's my first "real" bike, my bike before that was a 50cc. I am confident riding it and the funny thing is that it's actually cheaper to have it upgraded (at the HD dealership with warranty) to a 1200 than the price difference between the stock 883 and 1200 models. I think the guys talking shit about Sportsters, "girls bike" and such are having a micropenis issue. Cheers!

I love my Nightster. Got her brand new in 2009 and I've ridden her all over the country. Closing in on 66,000 miles on mine and I've done almost every bit of wrenching on it that needs to be or can be done. Keep up the adventure sir.

2013 sportster 1200c and it's a tank. Rode threw heavy storms, flooded streets, wet snow falls, blistering heat. Only problem is figuring out a clutch cable problem. It's a tank, it's my first bike, and it fits me like a charm. I am beginning to eyeball road kings but that just because my appreciation for Harleys is growing. Though the change is not needed and if you have a wild side the sportster is it. It's faster, I can hit a corner hot and lean in hard, it's acceleration, I have to admit, is enough to make you place your weight on top the tank so you don't get thrown or chase a wheelie. So that part is covered, it's an outstanding starter and keeper bike. Grab a sissy bar and a good sissy bar bag, carry tools for a clutch cable adjustment, wrench for battery cables, and that's about it. You can't go wrong with the bike. Keep it stock your good, add some ground pounders your good, or go all out with mods your good. The bike is like the mustang pony. It's not the strongest, not the fastest, but it's tough and won't quit.

Excellent! Great video and I'm glad you did a review of the sportster. Another maintenance item that is simple and unique to the sportster is the right hand side final drive. This allows for very easy belt and pulley replacement (or chain and sprocket in my case). Big twins are left side drive as you know, and changing the belt is a true nightmare! Not to mention big twins are pigs anyway lol
Air cooling is another big plus with the sportster (compared to similar Japanese bikes) and one more thing; sportsters have no cam chain to wear out, it's all gear driven and very robust.
And as far as reliability, well I've had my sportster since Dec. of 2000 and it has over 80k miles on it with no issues.

I completely feel what you say about the sportster. I got myself a 883 as my very first bike. I had no license and had never ridden a motorcycle before so I couldn't do a test ride but I knew this is the bike I want to ride. Right now it has almost 900km on the clock but I didn't even need 1km to say that I love it. I can also recommend anyone a sportster as a beginner.
    ride save, have fun (:

I just rolled 81,000 miles this month on my 2009 Nightster. You pretty much nailed it. I would highly suggest the D&D two into one exhaust, and the Zippers Thundermax stand alone ignition mods as well. The Iron had better handlebars and wheels. I've got the bars, but not the wheels. I scored a stock "Custom" model rear wheel on ebay for a dance, and it has been excellent. The clutch basket got dinged up when the "Spring Plate" grenade went off at around 40,000 or so thousand miles. An Energy One clutch kit and a fine file fixed things right up. Both the clutch cable and drive belt are original units.

I started with a suzuki dirt bike when I was 12. Then I went to a Triumph Bonneville, whicb I traded for a '47 Knuck...drove it for many years, then sold it during the chopper craze to help put my sone thru college...Now I have a handbilt shovel chopper I did myself...Xl bikes are nice, but I think for really long trips you will find a bigtwin much more comfortable....all this is just imho

For me! I use both front and rear brakes simultaneously starting with the rear gently then the front and apply equal pressure as required on a particular traffic situation. And! Using the rear brake and using the clutch you can maintain your upright position in slow moving traffic until traffic comes to a complete stop then I place both feet on the ground. Yet again. That's where I'm comfortable doing. GREAT VIDEOS you got on your page, thumbs up!

I've never had a Sportster but my son does. And to be truthful I have as much fun on his as I do my 2015 heritage or my 86flhtc tour guide classic. It's very nimble and just a blast to ride. I have switched bikes with him a couple times when we go out riding. Good job by the way. Always like watching your videos.

I started with a 50cc scooter when I was 15, after I got my driving licence I got a Honda CB600 Hornet which I had for 1+ year & I put in about 26000Km (+-15000 miles), then moved to a Suzuki Intruder 1400 and drove for about 6+ months a Honda CBR 600 RR that was from my brother until he felt comfortable in driving it..... now it has passed about 15years since I last had a motorcycle and the bug is waking up again, but I don't know what to go for.
These bikes I had always lacked the option to go off road which I also love to do, but I don't want an off-road specific bike. I have been entertaining the idea of a scramble, but the off the shelf ones are not exactly to my taste and I was wondering if I could kind of adapt / transform one... was while I was researching for that when I came across your channel, which I really like, the off road you do is more or less the type I want to do, although still not decided on what bike yet, but yours looks very nice and something as simple as what I would do myself. The things I know I want are: comfort, good range on a single tank (I enjoy to go for long rides without many stops), as light as possible, with some power because I also like to carve some mountain roads from time to time and, almost as important as all the previous, with very good stopping power.
I have to get a bike to use as base... if you have some suggestions, please share. I would like to avoid to go over the 1000cc size engine and not to go lower than 500cc. As I said, I had 600 cc and 1400cc, the last as a cruiser was a blast of fun, but to go off road would be to heavy, the other too were a blast too, but they were too fast lol, I find hard to resist the temptation of speed and the hornet was a bit heavy to go off road too (for me) I am about 5.5foot and about 70kg - my size and weight and a heavy bike are not the best combination :D
Carry on with the good work and having fun!

  • @saddle8bag

I've ridden two 1200 Sporties. The first was a pre-rubber mounted job that was the scariest damn thing ever. It had a 21" wheel that made for anti-steer turning, anti-stop brakes, and an engine that shook so hard, I was sure it was going to fall out.
A couple years ago, I tried a newer one with the rubber mounted engine and liked it, but it was still too vibey for my liking. The rest of it worked well enough.
I think you made a lot of good points in your vid. So many people get all caught up in power and weight stats. There's a lot to be said for simplicity and ease of tailoring.
Used to love watching Bad Bonneville ride his bike where it had no right to be. So much more fun than watching another knucklehead see how far he can push the needle before some poor SOB changes lanes in front of him and puts another GSXR to sleep.

Harleys are a lot of fun to ride!

Hey, please change the broken clutch bar. The ball on the end has a safety purpose. I broke mine just like you, didn't replace quickly. One day, early AM riding on top of a levy, levy turned right, I didn't, not paying attention. Bike went airborne, came down on me driving the "clutch spike" into and through my leg (calf). If the ball would have been the end I might have escaped serious injury. Please take note of my stupid mistake. I almost didn't make it.

First looked at the Sportster 1200. Bought a Road King. Mission is everything in choosing a bike. Want to take longer trips. Niece lives in Phoenix and plan several trips there from Oregon this year. RK is probably more bike than a returning rider like me should have, but it fulfills the mission better than a smaller bike. Still think the Sportster line is the best looking set of motorcycles. Nothing beats the Road King for touring rides. Comfortable, powerful, and is surprisingly nimble.

Not to mention 250's. When I first started riding motorcycles in the 1970's, it was not uncommon to see 125's or 175's on the street. The Honda CB750 was considered, "mammoth."
      I don't understand how 1200cc's is a "small" engine.

Love the scrambler look on your sportster! Had my 1998 1200 for just over a year now. Bought it off a guy that is an airforce officer with only 1,800 miles but he hadn't ridden it in 11 years, it just sat in his garage. Been taking my first year learning to ride and with it being a bike that sat for a decade lot of little things here and there needing replace and tweaked she has left me on the side of the road count quite a few times, as frustrating as it is in have become very familiar with her. Lol this is my first bike. my dad who has had many motorcycles in his life thought I was nuts getting a 1200 as a first bike. I respect the power between my legs and i feel as if im doing just fine. When I need or want to get on it its there, but I can also just chill and enjoy the ride.
Question to you Dan I just got a pair of 777s how do the knobies you have fair on longer highway travel, and handling in the curves?

I can relate with the unique Harley look having an XR myself. You've had the RSD grips in for awhile now, how are they holding up? And would you recommend expensive grips like that, or buy them again?

Is the gas tank big enough? I heard with the 48 you have to constantly fill up cause the tank was so small.

Three flavors of tanks 2.1 Small Peanut, 3.1 or 3.3 (can't remember) Super Peanut or King Peanut Tank, then the Custom 4.5 gallon tank. The 3.3(?) which is the one I have can go long enough where I will need a break to stretch my legs. I do not maintain with the guys with the 5 gallon tanks on their Soft Tails and Glides. The Small Peanut is 883 in town Bar Hopper range or a fill up every other day going back and forth to work.

I’m not a beginner but would be a first time owning a Harley and I’m looking at sportster nightster 1200, 2009. I am just wondering will I be happy with the overall performance of this bike? I want have a cruiser my previous bike was a sports bike and a dirt bike but now I have been out of riding for 13 years and was wanting to get back into it. Will I be happy with the nightster? I like the look/style of it. Any advice be appreciated sportster is the only Harley that would roughly fit my price range other models to much at the moment plus insurance on the bigger cc motor is a lot more not will to pay that insurance hike the 883 is more better but I don’t think I will be satisfied with it compared to the 1200. I have test rode an 883 and 1200 stock form and it seems ok but nothing wow but the one I’m looking at has pipes, air cleaner and mapped so hopefully this makes a big difference in performance. The owner is not allowing any test rides, so I guess I will have to take his word for it if I decide on
    Purchasing.

This is why i got a sportster. Simple and not much to it. I hate the bikes with stereos and all that nonsense on it.

Great review! I am thinking of buying my first bike, and start riding in the spring. But I am only 5ft 6, so would the 1200 Sportster be too large?

if you're above 5'2'' in height, do not, i repeat, do not buy a sportster.
