    My Dad was a biker for most of his life. Taught me that it is never IF but WHEN you will fall. Lost him in 2008 and he is a lot of the reason I ride. I think his wisdom holds true... Thanks for the video!

    Wife and I are both relatively new to riding. We rode about 4 hours the other day, with it about 90F. Mesh jackets made a WORLD of difference.

      @SKITTLELA 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mesh is great (albeit NEARLY as abrasion-resistant as leather or even nylon) but will only be good up to over 93F. Above that, the hotter air temperature and wind does more harm than good, so you should close vents. Although staying wet would increase that point.

    Hydration is everything in terms of heat protection. Coming from a vet, I’ve seen marines passing out from heat exhaustion. It’s crazy. I can’t imagine what it’s like being on the motorcycle and getting your ass kicked by the sun. At least not yet. 3 more weeks!! Awesome vid, Dan!

    You are so right about the hydration. It also helps you stay alert in hot weather, drowsy bikers are a recipe a crash.

    I live in a state where the summer not only brings lots of heat but also rain. Have to make sure I have waterproof gear and have to check on and possibly change to a more rain appropriate tire. Looking forward to trying out the Michelin Pilot 5s.

    Side comment. Because you live in a hot state I'm curious how you keep your engine from overheating. I live in Ohio and we get to high 80's/low 90's in July. On those hot days I turn my sportster off at every stop light I stop at if I know I"m gonna be there longer then 30 seconds to help manage the heat. I also always try to take country roads or highways and avoid in town routes as much as possible.

      For the price you pay for a sportster, it should come with a liquid cooled rad with a fan. Hell my 286cc 2017 honda rebel does, and it costs far less.

      It won't overheat just sitting at a stop light for a few minutes. An XL runs at 250 degrees operating temperature. Believe it or not, the engine actually gets hotter immediately after turning it off. Once the engine quits sucking in cold, outside air, squirting gas in the cylinders, and circulating oil, it just sits there, over hot pavement, surrounded by the hot air that is now surrounding it. I've watched it happen on the Dyno.

    So you wouldn't recommend people get the adrenaline rush of being woken by the ripple strips on the side of the freeway?
    (Wearing initial winter gear into Australian summer to save money was not clever, in hindsight. I've never felt so mortal.)

    "But it's dry heat..." =)
    Dry heat my ass, i don't ride past 95F. This is a cut off point for me. I won't ride without my protective gear but at this temperature heat stroke and dehydration are more likely than crashing. June is the worst month.
    Up to 95F you can open your visor to cool off a little, after 95F you have to close it completely to keep the hot air out, screw that. (it only makes sense if you live in AZ)
    If i don't leave my house by 7:00am in Summer months i take my car.
    I really hope they legalize lane splitting for AZ, it would make a world of difference for riding in heat.

    Thanks for the list. Have you tried those accessories that you soak in water to keep you cool? Are those any good?

    • @baqcasanke
      @baqcasanke 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      VVoltz yes. Honestly, a basic 5$ bandana soaked in water tied around your neck will do you a lot of good.
      Evaporative cooling really works

    You need to wet your shit. Get geared up, go outside and hose yourself down from head to toe, yes feet too. You may be a wet mess when you start but by the time you get to your destination you'll be dry. Oh this is for hot ass places like Phoenix Arizona when its 110+. If you have nice weather good for you. The rest of us have to toss ice cubes in our pockets. SO worth it ppl. Try it I promise you wont go back to dry riding.
