Hi there.I came in late for the show but am listening to it again right now. I was wondering, as I had kidney stones taken out (they were uric acid) a couple of years ago now, can this be the cause of my primal parathyroidism that was diagnosed? How do they effect each other and what can I do to balance things out. Much appreciate your show and your advice.
On getting more alkaline in diet, what about alkaline drops that you can drip into drinking water and other drinks, like alkazone and alkalife ? Thanks!
It looks like these drops contain potassium and magnesium which are two nutrients that help to lower PRAL (potential renal acid load). However, it is generally recommended to avoid potassium additives and get it from food instead! That way it comes along with fiber and other phytonutrients and beneficial components.
I have stage 3 kidney disease & no nephrologist or a renal dietician. Because I am on Medicare Advantage,I have to get a referral from my primary care Dr. who refuses to refer me to one until stage 4. I don:t qualify for original Medicare where I wouldn't have to get referrals or approvals since I have stage 3 kidney disease & never was informed about the short window to be guaranteed approval into it without passing medical overwriting .
That is horrible your PCP won't refer you to a nephrologist or renal dietitian! Medicare typically covers 3 hours/year with a renal dietitian. If you can see a different PCP and get a referral for that and for a nephrologist that would help you out a lot!
I gave your podcast info to my nurse practitioner who had was not aware of it. Please share info about substituting ground roasted chicory to my morning coffee. The reports of potassium in chicory online is inconsistent.. Also, what is the science of substituting ground bean flour in baked goods. Also, are you familiar with the Sneaky Chef recipes for getting more vegetables in our diets..
For people that wake up multiple times a night to use the restroom and it disrupts their sleep, limit fluid intake a few hours before bed is helpful. A lot of people don't have problems getting up to use the restroom multiple times a night though.
If still following a low sodium diet (less than 2000 mg/day), it doesn't really matter which form of salt is used. Celtic sea salt has some other trace minerals (potassium, magnesium, chloride) in it as well. But if still limiting intake for a low sodium diet, those minerals should not add up to a high amount.
Recently diagnosed with KD stage 3 & today diagnosed with heart failure. What if anything can I do, I am feeling defeated. I am a 68 year old female who is overweight. Would fasting help..?
We are sorry to hear about your recent diagnosis. That has got to be scary and overwhelming! But there is so much you can do!! We have TONS of videos on our channel addressing, diet, lifestyle, exercise, fasting, and much more for you to check out. But we would highly recommend working with a renal dietitian 1:1 so they can customize a plan for you based on your health history and individual needs....you can reach out to Michele at michele@crosmernutrition.com and she can help you find one!
I pray they keep in mind that all retired seniors cannot afford to purchase the level of fresh produce and/or balanced diet discussed in this video because of their fixed income.
Frozen produce is just as good as fresh! And canned or dried legumes, grains, and tofu are all much cheaper than animal based foods. Eating minimally processed, plant based or plant predominant is actually much cheaper than standard american diet!
Check out our video on the impact of sugar and kidney disease. It is definitely recommended to limit added sugar (like what you would find in cakes). Bread is usually fine to eat as long as it is low sodium, contains ideally 3-5 g fiber/slice, doesn't have added sugar. It's important what the food is paired with too of course!
Need some time stamps

Awesome episode! Rowing machine? Great idea! What brand? Thanks.
Dr. Hashmi has the Concept2 rowing machine but mentions that any rowing machine is a great option :)
Can dialysis pt use Rowling machine, or it's too much
Please comment on epigenetics & 1) ckd & 2) pkd & 3) kappa Lambda protein 2x elevation
Stop drinking liquids 4 hours before sleep even if I have ckd3? I feel like I get dried up and if I have to do creatinine and BUN test its elevated

Agree. I wake up thirsty.
Is the use ofCeltic salt sea salt. Is it good to use if you have CKD.

If there's an Aldi's near you they have plenty of fresh fruits and veggies for less.
Doc, do you think eating too much flour like cakes and bread, can impact on the creatinin number, become higher? Why (not)?
