  • In 2006, TamashiiHiroka was the quintessential Pokemon TH-camr. But what happened to her to take the Tamashii channel from millions of views down to what her videos get today? Why has the name of her channel suddenly changed to Tama Hero instead of Hiroka? Today, Tama herself explains the full history of her content, from the very beginning to where it's at now, all 14 years.

I wanted to add (yes even in a video this long I apparently omitted information) that after I finished the video I went back to rewatch some old RinryGameGame videos and realized that most of the Myths and Creepypastas era was inspired directly by her editing style. I can see much clearer parallels between her videos and what style I was trying to mimic than the other channels I mentioned. So shout out to Rinry! She is retired as of 2013 but her videos are still entertaining so if you'd like to check her out: th-cam.com/users/rinrygamegame

yo, tama, just wanna say- i started watching your videos in 2012, and i have a very vivid memory of 13-year-old me commenting something snarky and very anti-gen 5 on one of your trivia videos (something along the lines of "i hate [very petty detail about gen 5]). it was honestly a really rude comment.
you actually replied to me, in a very nice and graceful, "ok we get it you're 13" way, and it stuck with me because i think that was the first time i really realized that there was a person behind a youtube channel? like, it's one thing to know that what you're saying can be directly seen by the creator, but its another thing to be confronted with it.
so i wanted to thank you for that, and also apologize for 13-year-old me being a douche. this was a really fun video to watch- i love the direction your content is going in right now and i can't wait to see more!

Man, as someone who cut their teeth age 9 on the net at the same time, used a fakey-Japanese name (and still do in some places!), tried (and failed) rom-hacking, remembered when TH-cam had a 10 minute limit, honours, your old content (I wasn't there like, at the hack, but I reckon I got there around Gen IV-Vish?), this was a fun retrospective. I'm really glad you have a healthier relationship with TH-cam now as your growth 100% shows.
I also think you really downplayed that there are numerous people who wouldn't be where they are now if you didn't make the content you did. It may have inevitably happened that Pokemon TH-cam took off, but you were there and you started it.

    • @definitelynotashark1799
      @definitelynotashark1799 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

Omg this took me back, the 10 minute limit! Back then, the most mind-blowing shitposts were people uploading "10 MINUTES OF"-videos with loops of annoying sounds/song segments/memes. You know, like the "10 hours of"-videos today. Only that managing to upload a 10 minute clip was such a feat back then. You needed a computer strong enough to create the video, you needed a stable enough Internet connection, and decent speed too. My entire legacy on conception-era TH-cam consisted of uploads of pirated Marilyn Manson music videos. The last one got taken down in 2012 or even later, I wonder if I still have the e-mail I got for it. These were about 3 minute long and super low quality, but it would take at least 5-6h to upload them, assuming nobody else in the house had to use the internet. So I'd start the upload before going to bed and pray that nothing stopped the process. So I can only imagine how long it took people to upload those 10 minute ones.

It's okay, hang in there, I remember watching you when I was younger and feeling ecstatic about how a girl was playing video games, I had five sisters, but all had zero interest in video games, and there was my aunt, who was pretty hardocre into games, but rarely did she ever play them while I was around. To see a girl playing video games that was around my age made me happy, I never understood the whole stigma against girls playing and being in video games, but it did feel like it was a guy only thing, but my experience was different. I didnt really fit in with the other guys who played video games, I felt so isolated in a rather open community, mainly because I felt as if no one shared the same perspective, like an observer looking in rather than being apart of it, but your more casual and interesting perspective on games actually appealed to me, I felt as I found a connection in a rather isolated time in my life. No I didnt subscribe, and no I didnt stick around, but i genuinely enjoy the fact your still making content in video games. I do not claim to be a member of the video game community, mainly because I still feel as if I dont fit in despite my love and passion for video games, but I can say that you do fill a niche on TH-cam that often goes unnoticed and receives little attention. Dont worry too much about what is being said, making videos for competition never really made much since to me, you clearly enjoy what you are making, you clearly enjoy what you are doing, so what does it matter that you are receiving criticism, a competitive atmosphere removes all the fun, so do what you can have fun with, the best channels TH-cam has ever had focus entirely on having fun, are passion filled, and show a genuine love and care for what they are doing. Scott the woz and the internet historian are a few up and coming channels that literally seem to be just goofing around but have both reached a million subscribers, and receive a large amount of views consistently. Dont copy, dont look to compete, look to make and share, dont build an audience, make what you truly want and let your audience find you, from what I've seen, there is no full proof way to a successful channel, you can heart and soul and still fail, therefore it doesn't matter whether you give those things up or not, you can still succeed with those things just as easily. Experiment, get messy, make mistakes, I would respect that far more than anything else. Call me an observer, for I dont really seem to fit in anywhere and therefore am in the perfect position to do so, and I have observed a passionate video maker who is unwilling to sacrifice who she is, and that alone is reason to respect you, for it is surprisingly uncommon. Keep going, and I hope that I didnt ramble too much, I have a bad habit of being rather preachy and longwinded, so I apologize if I have been a bother, my intentions are purely to encourage you, I just have a weird way of doing that kind of thing. Change is good, change means that you are living, change means you are embracing life, I find any resistance to it to be futile and illogical, for it comes just as the sun will rise and set on the horizon. Do what you think is best, I'm certain you are far better equipped to choose the right path than even your harshest critic.

I'm not sure why TH-cam decided to recommend this video to me now, but I'm really happy that it did. It's cool to hear someone who's the same age as me talking about so many relatable parts of internet history and life in general. It's always such a kick to see those screencaps of the old TH-cam profile pages! While it's probably not the same, I also relate a lot to the sort of school issues you describe, what with the "smart person but not in a conventional education kinda way", so it's really heartwarming to hear about you finding your own ways to overcome personal obstacles. When my daughter, who was 2 at the time, clicked on the first video of yours that we watched about 5 years ago she always called you Tama and would look forward to watching your videos with me. You have been a huge part of her Pokemon experience as she's grown into quite the little trainer. She wanted to go see Detective Pikachu with you so much because she just learned that Portland wasn't far away from us. We have both been enjoying the more consistent videos after the break and it brings me a smile when I get a notification that you've uploaded because of seeing "Tama" and the memories associated with that. Continue making great content and know you've become a role model for a future pokemon master.

You've cultivated a community of people who feel nostalgic about 2000s - early 2010s internet here haha!
I'm glad that I've found you again. Am thinking your glitches videos were the ones I first saw.
Being a isolated young geeky girl myself (though not experiencing the sort of struggles you did by a long shot, I remember that DML video) I was really taken in by your content. My interests have shifted, but I still feel nostalgia not just about Pokémon but also your content. I find myself really liking your new approach : it's clear your confidence and awareness has grown exponentially.
This was so warm and fuzzy to watch , if a little bittersweet since it makes clear how much time has gone by.

Dude, I don't even know how to write this or if u will even see it given that im defs a long term lurker, but I just wanna say that as someone who has been watching you since the beginning...
your vids have meant alot to me over the years. As a fellow socially awkward girl with undiagnosed learning disabilities and mental health issues on the internet of the same age with the same interests, seeing you grow in terms of happiness and self confidence over the years and succeasfully go through alot of the same things I have has made a real difference in my life... and whilst parasocial relationships with internet creators can often bring up complex feelings for people (am defs guilty of that) im just really glad you were there, talking about things that i was interested in and representing a demographic that was me!
With all the changes in your upload schedule and clear ups and downs mental health wise I have often found myself worried about you but I'm so so glad youre doing well these days and that you have made such an amazing transition from early youtube to now. keep up the amazing work... I have always and will always admire you.

Although sadly this is on a new account because my old one got deleted, I've been a massive fan of your channel since 2015. I don't know if you'll ever see this, but that doesn't matter, I would just love to say how much I thank you Tama, for everything. You've got me through not only the toughest and most depressing times of my life, as I've always been a lonely and anxious kid, but simply changed me as a person, and for the better! You became a literal part of my life. Your videos and wonderful personality managed to help me so much, I always got so excited for a new Tamashii Hiroka upload, I also remember binging all of your old videos when I discovered your channel, and I remember how happy I was when I watched them; it's been that way ever since! So thank you, thank you so much for always being my favourite TH-cam creator on the platform, thank you for carrying through not only my childhood, but simply my life. I am so glad you are back full time again, it was tough having that year or so without you when you took that long break! I can't express how much I love you as a person Tama, your channel saved me. I've heard of this channel many times before but this is the first time I checked a full video here. At first I thought "why would someone sit and talk about themselves for 40 minutes?" but after listening, it feels like a milestone to acknowledge the progress you've made throughout the years.
I relate to some parts of the retelling, like struggling with mental health and feeling like "running from my life" and having problems in classes due to learning problems. Therapy has helped me as well, and it's always so heartwarming for me to see someone overcome their past mental demons and become stronger by finding a healthy balance in their life. I'm glad you made this video.

  • @amziedragon6619
    @amziedragon6619 ปีที่แล้ว

Tama, thank you so much for this. I found your channel when I was around 13/14 watching Jwittz's content and have remained subscribed since. I recently started watching your long newerish reviews and looked for your newest video. Growing up in the spotlight of TH-cam with a LD sounds super tough. While I can't relate to that, the mental health struggles, self doubt of struggling and feeling like you are a lost cause, and an undiagnosed disability is something I relate to HEAVILY, especially right now. I recently lost a full time job after I disclosed a recent Autism diagnosis and have really been struggling with finance worries, self doubt, uncovering that I have had a lot of trauma that I thought was me being not good enough and have been accessing mental health services due to recently unrealised depression and anxiety. I also struggle with working memory difficulties and chronic pain. Basically, being undiagnosed and different is tough and I relate a lot.
Your video inspires me to keep trying to get help and to remember that things will be okay.
I'm so glad you're in a better place now and I'm looking forward to seeing your new content in the context of you being more passionate and happy with it and yourself right now.
And yes, you are valuable for you :)
    Hugs!!!

I had a relatively trauma-free childhood, especially compared to you, but even for me, having someone to confide in who’s a professional in mental health is so incredibly helpful.
The difference in your disposition and confidence in videos from the last 3 years or so compared to the 2015 era is really incredible. Videos like this that talk about one's journey through TH-cam and what they thought at the time during their video creation are enjoyable for me to watch, and with you being one of the OGs, it applies even more so in this case.
I also enjoyed watching your stream VOD on Twitch where you reviewed your videos from the early voiced commentary days, or "Era 2". It's wild how you're essentially a living relic of old TH-cam and still around. I like it. : ]
I liked the "imagined hack story" type videos back in the day with Gen 3 Pokemon , Super Mario 64 and other games. Lots of Scatman and Linkin Park, though.
I remember the Treecko that the character in "Pokemon: The Hack" owned, and got killed by a Ho-Oh, and then the character stuffed the corpse and put it in her house. Haha.
I get that feeling of crisis and worries about how life is going, seeing as I struggle with mental health myself and have had that feeling. I'm pretty much the same age as you, with the end of my high school days being in 2010 and 2011.
Even with this not being the first username I had on the internet, I do wonder if "RebelliousTreecko" is silly or cringy at times as I keep getting older.

Your videos kept me hooked and I anxiously awaited new hack videos, and once you stopped those, anything else you uploaded. Glad to still be here all these years later.

i've loved watching this channel grow over the years (since 2012) and i''ve loved every new direction you've taken with it since then. i've been able to relate to a lot of the super serious and smaller happy stuff you've talked about over the years and this channel has always been a big source of comfort for me

Ah this is big brain before those other youtube channels that make videos about how a youtuber has fallen from grace you beat them to the punch by doing it yourself.

This was a great video idea!
I'm happy to see you giving TH-cam another shot. I've been seeing you upload consistently recently and I can definitely see your channel growing with these new style of videos!
Also I personally love videos about the early days of TH-cam so this was a pleasant watch.
    Keep pushing forward!

After watching this it really hit me how many videos of yours I’ve watched over the years. It’s so hype that you’ve come back full swing

This really hit home for me. It's great to hear your perspective on your time on TH-cam, and that at the end of the day as long as you are happy with the content that you create and post then that should take precedence. I had two previous channels (the first being created in 2007) and I wish I could go back and do things differently and not lose all the subscribers and videos that I had. I stopped uploading during university and have only recently created different things as well as changed my channel name. Going from a name that I made up as a teenager to just my name is actually really empowering and makes me more proud of what I've done even if I've had a couple of people question it. TH-cam has had its ups and downs but it really did help in many ways and although I only started watching your content in 2013, it's been very entertaining and seeing your channel develop to its current state is encouraging and makes me feel hopeful. Well done and thank you :)

    Thanks for doing this.
It was nice to see you re-appear on my recommendations and find this video explaining your story.
I'm glad you're doing video essays, that's the best media that exists IMO.

Times sure does fly huh. I’ve been watching your content since 2010 when I was looking up lavender town videos. Crazy to think I was an 8th grade kid and now i’m a grown ass adult. Whenever I saw a new video from you in my feed, I almost always watched it and it’s been like that for 10 years. Congrats on 14 years and I will still keep watching.

The algorithm is so weird. This is the first video of yours I've seen, but i watched all of it, despite having previously had no knowledge of the channel

I used to adore your uploads back in the 2007-2009 era! I made myself a new TH-cam account and never made it round to re-subscribing to you. Hearing your story has been amazing. Can't wait to re-watch your older videos and look forward to new ones. Great to see you again! :D

I remember finding your hack videos when I was 10. I’m turning 24 the 31st of October and this year I found your channel again... It felt like meeting my 10-yo self. Glad to see you continued making content! Loved your review videos! Love from Spain ❤️
