    THIS VIDEO IS OUTDATED, new updated version: th-cam.com/video/D9Vykw9zju8/w-d-xo.html
    I hope you enjoyed this very unconventional video. I really enjoyed doing a subject that was as vague and not well defined in lore as this one.
    Correction: There may have been different types of khajiit in tes games, since every khajiit race looks different in every main installment of the games.
    DEGENERATES!
    Oh and to my new arch nemesis mr "Flames of Chaos" first era video is on the way but this one became priority to finish when someone provided me with new sources.

      you might have got someone else saying this to you, but I heard somewhere that the high elves live up to 1000 years, and the dark elves live around 400, but feel free to correct my words from the grapevine.

    • @ImperialKnowledge
      @ImperialKnowledge  6 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      According to a recent interview with an eso developer mer live on average about 300-400 years if I remember correctly with 400 being very old. However mer can become significantly older because they can extend their lives by magical means. For example neloth that we meet in skyrim and morrowind who is wayyy older than 400 years.
      Fun fact however, some people doubt this devs lore knowledge (since he is eso developer and not mainline tes developer) & claim his statement was false. I personally find his statement to be quite reasonable, however I also feel like it might not go into detail enough about the life spans of different mer races which are stated to be different (dont exactly remember where)

      Considering that all races minus argonians started out as Elnofey and diversified until Tamriel was unified enough to allow widespread racial diversity in every given province (again, minus black marsh), the Mother’s Race thing is the main reason we still actually have 10 different races at all. Most of them would be gone by now, with all the slavery and conquering and race-wars since the beginning of the first era.
      Plus, the races wouldn’t be half as cool as they are if you could just mix and match them. They’d be meaningless and boring

      @Rill
      Yeah but they started put as half and half. Only reason Bretons looks slightly more human than Mer is because the original half breed Bretons were only able to procreate with other humans.
      So Elves and humans and Bretons and humans. This lead to 70% Human and 30% Elf blood. That's basically the explanation. While you share a good point, at the end of the day, it's just that Bethesda doesn't wanna make a ton of mixed races.

    • @thalmoragent9344
      @thalmoragent9344 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@matthewsteele5229
      To be fair, some races shouldn't be able to mix at all, really. Humans yeah, of course can all mix, but the Beast Races like Khajit or Argonian shouldn't be able too at all.
      While I see your point, even if they kept the mothers race... wouldn't there still be more than 10 races? Having one parent alone remain the one to give the baby it's race still means that either way, the races would still be here/gone by now even if the few who could mix did.
      Really, I feel it's just Bethesda really wanting to keep the races separate and unique. It's fun to keep 10, and only having the mom's race pass down wouldn't be the only way to do that, it's just a simple way of just keeping the fanbase for asking for mix races

    Although the extent by which one can control whom they fall in love with is rather minimal, but NOT nonexistent despite what some would say, I find it perfectly reasonable that an elf would be relunctunt to marry somebody who would die of old age before they are even so much as middle aged. It's just like how, in our own world, people will tend to avoid situations where they could end up falling in love with somebody who they know will most likely die decades before they do. They aren't cruel in this, they merely just avoid what they know to enevitably end in heartache and sorrow. Even from the perspective of the one of the two spouses who is going to die of old age sooner, they have to relyze the emotional anguish that this will eventually put their spouse through, and due to empathy, might be unwilling to put them through that themselves, and so they don't. The elf one of the spouses to be might also decide not to marry because they know that their own offspring, and maybe even their own grandoffspring, will probably die of old age before they do, and no true parent ever wishes to outlive their own children. All of this would explain why, even if the human beings and the elves of Nirn didn't all too often have prejudice against each other so much, marriages between the two species would still nevertheless be quite rare indeed, albeit not as rare as it is with the prejudices in tact.

    I might be wrong but if I remember correctly an average mer lives about 300 years. Whereas humans about a 100. So, if a mer went with a human for a long term relationship I imagine it'd be when the mer is over a 100 years old. Now, if it was only for fun then the age differences won't matter as much. Which seems to be how Bretons came to be. Slave Masters took advantage of their nedic maids and resulted in children. And I think argonians and cats live to the same age as humans?
    In one of the lore books, it talks about Talos' dark elf mistress and how he forced her to have an abortion. Their high elf doctor seemed uneasy to do this because according to the doctor, it is harder for elven women to get pregnant. I think it was in the barenziah book?
    There are also quests throughout TES that involve members of different species trying to hook up. The dark elves seem to be the horniest of the bunch. I get the impression that some elven males have a fetish for human females.

    I think it’s quite possible that the Argonians were just dumb beasts before the Hist arrived. And them being Daedra they could alter them into what they are now, but only at birth. It is from the Hist that they get their intelligence (or soul so to speak), so without them they just grow to become giant lizards. The Hist obviously would’ve done this to have servants in the world. As all of the powerful Daedra do.

    "It is her child. Children are few among (dark) elves. No woman conceives more than four and that is very rare. Two is the allotted number. Some bear none, some only one. If I take this one from her, she may not conceive again."
    Now, this does run counter to what has been confirmed that Mer are more fertile among other Mer, but I'm not sure I recall any confirmed Dunmer who has more than 4 children...It is probable like you suggest with the Altmer, that children are a concern for much later in life and most do not have more than 2...but I know there were a number of people who interpreted this line to mean Dunmer are only physically capable of 4...and even then only rarely.

    Really interesting to see all this brought together. Thanks!
    Personally, for both mer only and mer and man couples, I would go with the fertility theory. Or rather; ovulation.
    Ovulation can simply be much rarer for elves than once a month or the cycle could be much longer, thus making it easy to avoid ovulation with a little bit of planning. A female, of any race (usually), can only get pregnant if there's seed inside the uterus when the egg travels there. (This might be highly different for Argonians.) The egg will only stay there for 24 hours (in a human) before being discarded (Best Before date is highly short lol). For a woman, that's a TINY window. In the case of the male... it depends on how long his seed can survive. Fewer days means you need to have sex closer to ovulation. But if a couple knows when the female ovulates, not having sex at most six days before and not until one day after ovulation (unless you use protection) is enough.
    And if a female mer's fertile cycle is double or triple the lenght of a human's? That's a LOT of days when you can do whatever you very much like with no risk of pregnancy.
    And then there's the issue of unovulatory cycles where a female simply pass through the fertile cycle without any chance of pregnancy whatsoever, and they're not super uncommon either. In a male mer and female human couple, the human will still have their usual chances for pregnancy. (And with the Bretons we know it was this kind of combination that was the norm, which makes sense.) What about with a female mer and male human then? It could simply be down to that the different races having different ratios of hormones and enzymes in their natural lubrication and seed, something that promotes the movement of human seed. This doesn't mean one race's seed is less potent than the other, it just means it would take more or longer for it to reach the goal, so to speak.
    From a biological and logical point of view, I do find that this makes some of the most sense.
    As for Bosmer, it's possible their ability to have more children comes from not practicing birth control. Or, as they and their lore origin is in most cases tied to the land, might have a faster cycle or similar enzymes/hormone cocktail to humans since, since one origin of the different races argue, the races of man came from the Wandering Ehlnofey which were shaped by (the hardships of) Nirn more than trying to keep Nirn at bay/away (like the other half of their race). As Bosmer apparently "integrated" more with Nirn later (because of their concordat with Y'ffre through the Green Pact), they could have gotten that change as well. It's all very interesting to think about though, so thank you for giving all the ideas.
    Bonus: TES6 (since it now seems highly unlikely to be set in Elsweyr) could hopefully contain some info on the Khajiit as far as how their subrace is decided. Just one quest. That shouldn't be that hard, right? Or a book.

    True hybrid races in Elder Scrolls aren't gonna happen again in lore because it's a nightmare for the game developers to create every possible combination and sub-combinations can you imagine a half Orc half Khajiit with Altmer traits? lmao Bretons we're made possible because the Derenni elves had so many Nede sex slaves essentially that the Derenni/Nede offspring could mate with each other and they're own offspring would be identical to they're parents. The creation of a new hybrid race could only happen if those circumstances repeated themselves which is extremely unlikely Dunmer and Altmer hate each other and everyone else lmao Argonians and Khajiit also hate each other and basically everyone dislikes the Orcs

      In our world, in the old days, circumcision was practiced a lot due to lack of clean water and soap. I assume people like royalty would be able to keep clean so I don't think they practice it. And of course religion and culture plays a part.
      In the Elder Scrolls world, I assume it's pretty much the same.

    8:07 I thought of a reason the high elves would have fewer children. It has to do with their culture, probably that fewer mortal lives means more souls in aetherius. Or it could be a form of eugenics in that they choose not to have more children in attempt to lessen the likelihood devolution of the altmer race would occur

    Two wrenches to be thrown one the bretons they are men-mer or put another way man-elf
    Or half-elfen multiple times over kind of like the elves of Rivendell in Lord of the Rings
    But now for the far more serious problem the orc champion of the arena in Oblivion The Gray Prince 1/2 Breton half-orc vampire dunpeal so yeah it's a lot more complicated than claiming they take after the mother's race always
    I mean minotaurs disprove that
    And in the Elder Scrolls all minotaurs are descendants of Alycia the slave Queen and her consort Maura House of the man bull in fact the first few true Emperors were minotaurs

    Khajits and moons -> maybe actually a hormonal cycle in biology like in the real world (periods/hormones roughly the same length of a moon cycle)??? Interesting lore topic.

    • @lyosha2925
      @lyosha2925 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Might be! While we don't know what the consequences were, the moons disappeared at some point (Void nights). The Thalmor brought them back, and gained the trust of the Khajiits in doing so. Unsure if it screwed the felines' birth during this period...
      If there are any reports describing the effects of those nights on Khajiit, then we'd know for sure if it's purely magical or actually hormonal (or in their genes)
