    After the requests for more longform compilations of my shortform specific lore videos, here’s another one! Hope you enjoy it. It will be the last one for a bit as im working on 3 regular lore videos which I would like to push out before doing another one of these lore collections. Still, hope you enjoy!

      i like the thought that the regular trees might have been grown in a place with glowing mushrooms or at least somehow given the same properties as the glowing stuff in blackreach... not just the mushrooms are effected... even nirnroots are... and i've heard theories saying that its actually the glowing rocks granting the properties, but im not quite certain there's anything to it.

      I noticed a couple of inconsistencies.
      A) It was stated that, when Barenziah got pregnant, she was mortified that Tiber Septim demanded she get rid of it, in spite of the fact it was highly unusual for an elven woman to get pregnant before 100 and that an elven woman was lucky if she got pregnant at all, and doubly so if she were able to bear more than one child. Barenziah was, of course, a dark elf, and it was stated as though it applied to ALL elves.
      B) Eugenics absolutely can lead to lower birth rates. Let's say there are 100 noble families. Each has 1 man, 1 woman, and they all have 2 children. In a thousand years, every family will be related by marriage at the bare minimum. Another thousand? Everyone alive would have a related ancestor from each of the other noble houses, assuming they live a few hundred years, that is. After 3 thousand, every member of every family will be related to every other family. At this point, if not sooner, they will all be participating in incest. From there, the birth rates would begin to drop quite significantly, and the rate of birth defects would be immense. Clearly, they already have some issues with that.

    31:30 Metheglin is Mead made with herbs and/or spices. It’s kind of funny that the Aldmeri are essentially drinking the same thing as the Nords they absolutely despise. It also provides a convenient reason why Mead is found in areas occupied by the Thalmor in Skyrim. My love of historical brewing and elder scrolls lore finally pays off.

    "Useless" or not, I cannot overemphasize just how much I appreciate the many details TES includes about the mundane lives of the denizens of Tamriel.
    So many fantasy settings overthink literally every aspect of things like magic, language, religion, trade, courtly intrigue, or dragon biology, but neglect everything that makes a world feel truly lived in - games, sports, food culture, clothing, funereal and mourning customs, waste management, pets/companion animals (where are all the different dog breeds?), education, travel and transportation, bureaucracy, the flow of information, infrastructure etc.

    • @flyingpiggy1475
      @flyingpiggy1475 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      For real. Can I use a real life event, but replacing our worlds words with the fanatical ones?
      I was talking to my friend about (sport) while drinking(acholol). I could overhear talks of whining over a (board game).
      Plus it acts double fold as a way to communicate its story. The argonians casual sex life because of thier biology allows for better understanding of their place in the world.

    • @spoton6010
      @spoton6010 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      Exactly why I don't think it's useless. It's inconsequential, sure, but it plays an important role in making the world feel real lived in, which massively helps with player immersion

    This reminds me of a Reddit thread I read sometime ago, that I couldn’t find unfortunately. It asked, if there was a soccer match between all of tamriel, who would win? I don’t recall the ranking, but I remember a funny section that said Orcs would play rugby and be the best in the world, because they are the only ones playing it

    • @Usagi33353

    • @monosophy691
      @monosophy691 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

      It looks like argonian culture also has some sports involving balls, but they seem more akin to volleyball or soccer than rugby. Weirdly, no one seems to play any sport that requires a dedicated space to do so other than arena bloodsport.

    Hmm, why would consuming honey-based alcohol break the green pact? It's technically plant based I guess, but the nectar it once was has been half-digested and converted to a different substance by an animal, notably via a process that not only does no harm to the plants, but actively assists them. How can that be any worse than consuming the flesh or milk of an animal that grazes on plants?

    • @justme0910
      @justme0910 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +31

      From my understanding of the lore, there is actually some debate within Bosmer culture as to what "counts" as breaking the Green Pact. Some Bosmer do consider honey fair game, and some will even consume fallen fruits, but make sure not to swallow the seeds so they can be replanted.

    Something funny I always loved about the “bathroom lore” in Skyrim (something I’ve actually never recognized as being a thing until now lmao) is when you go into a group housing setting like a guard barracks or a bandit outpost, more than likely you’ll find a row of several buckets and stools all separated by a small barrier like a type of medieval public toilet 😂 bonus points for the one or two I remember that actually featured stools with reading material on them for the bathroom goers, very classy details for soldiers and bandits lol.

    Good video, but just wanted to give an fyi: the foxtail "leaf" isnt a leaf, it is the seed head of the plant. Essentially it is functionally the same as the head of grain you see in a fully grown wheat field. Foxtail is a real world plant by the way and gets its,name from the look of it's seed head (or tail in this case).

    About the alcoholic beverages of the bosmer:
    The milk one doesn't sound too bad. If I remember correctly, the mongols loved a type of alcohol, that was made from fermented horse milk.
    Also, this just came to me, wouldn't alcohol made from fermented honey be okay to make and consume for the bosmer? I mean, it's made by bees, so wouldn't this count as an animal product, like milk or meat?

    So there is actually some real-world reasoning behind why Tarot are considered "playing cards". They are quite literally the origin of the modern deck of playing cards.
    A modern card deck has four suites (Ace, Club, Heart, Spades) with numbers one (ace) through ten, as well as three court cards; King, Queen and Jack. You also get Joker cards which aren't often used in card games but it is relevant to the origin.
    The Tarot deck has a similar set up. You have two "arcana", the major and minor. The minor arcana also known as the "lesser secrets" are made up of 56 cards... these are divided into four suites; the swords, wands, pentacles and cups; these are counted one through ten with four court cards; King, Queen, Knight and Jack. I'm sure you can already see the origins here. In divination, the minor arcana are used for insignificant day-to-day styled fortune-telling, they massively outnumber the major arcana so if you're using both sets in your readings you're far more likely to pull these cards, their significance is much lesser.
    The other half of the Tarot deck are the major arcana, these are cards like The Emperor, Death or The Tower. Compared to the minor arcana, these cards are significantly more impactful and are usually used for large turning points in your life, they are far fewer in number so general readings with both arcana are less likely to pull these cards. They aren't used in modern playing decks with one exception: the Fool aka the Joker. A line from Now You See Me 2 has a wise old woman asking "do you know why the Fool is the most powerful card in the Tarot? Not because the person who draws him is a fool, he's a fool because he's a clean slate. And therefore, can become anything." This is appropriate as the few games that actually use this card use it to represent anything. In divination, the Fool is often used to represent the person being read, it is the Fool's journey, their opportunity to become any of the other cards.
    From what I understand the Tarot haven't had major changes to the deck layout, some changes to interpretation or how they are illustrated but generally you'd have the same cards. They started off as simple playing cards and were only later adopted as a fortune-telling tool. Once this adoption took place, then people using it for games started cutting it down into our modern interpretation of a playing deck.

    48:21 The Swan Game is likely based on The Ancient Egyptian Game Sentet, where its used along side of tarot cards as Divination tools and games. Sentet is A logic based game while Tarot cards are mostly used as tools to connect to the Gods or Deities by telling fortunes and predictions about certain aspects of a person's life or a specific event that would or could happen. So I am a bit rusty at this point in terms of my personal beer expertise, but I am pretty sure that the Bosmer Ale wouldn't count as ale or beer. There are four main ingredients within beer: malt, hops, yeast and water. Hops wasn't always a necessary part though. Yeast is essential for the fermentation process. Hops carries a lot of the flavour (of course depending on the brewing style, in malty beers the malt flavour is stronger).
    There has been ale with meat in it. Cock Ale for example, but that was an ale to which the chicken meat was added later. Also Oyster Ale with bulls testicles. So in simple terms. It's not an ale in the conventional sense. However I think one can argue, if it fits into the same culinary niche as Ale, just like Oat and Soy Milk occupy the same niche as Cows Milk, than it can still carry that name.

    Something I'd be interested in would be something akin to beastiaries of the different regions/provinces.
    When I looked for something like a list of creatures that inhabit Skyrim, I found one that said, that you could find much of prehistoric Megafauna in this provinces, so you could, for example, in the Lore, find wooly rhinos teeming in the cold regions, while you could find glyptodons in the southern parts of Skyrim.
    I can't find it anymore (because, like the fool that I am, I didn't save a Link to it), and when I looked for them on the UESP, I found that rhinos as a whole are even more mythical then unicorns, only existing in Folklore, and glyptodons, while existing, are only found in or close to Elsweyr.

    The halatafl game is unmistakably of old norse influence - halatafl meaning "high table" - though i do believe the game we see here, is a version called hnefatafl (fist table), other names for similar games or even the same are, the kings army or the fox and geese - 49:10

    This board game with the little colored pieces. Even though it's just a flat square , there's lines leading to each other at an angle reminds me of chinese checkers But i'm willing to bet the rules are similar to chast or each piece depending on the shape and color which looks like there's more than one color so each individual gets a certain set of colors with certain shapes that probably allowed to make certain specific number of moves

    My thought process going into this video was like: "useless TES lore? Perfect, this will surely put me to sleep" Unfortunately when you started talking about different types of grass, I had to get up and crank up the volume because oh boy, that was simply too interesting.

    7!!! at the end of the video you really did underestimate my obsession with the lore. i often times listen to lore videos and/or podcasts when doing some mundane tasks like cleaning or working on a drawing. for you and likely many others this stuff might be useless lore but to me it helps guide me in my artistic path...aka most of what i draw are my stupid elves and castles. helps me to add little details to full blown pieces i might not have thought of like a unicorn being dendric in origin is going to be my origin source for an up coming piece.

      My ideal elderscoll lores video goes in depth into ALL aspects of elder scrolls. Gods, wars, games, even individual people. Of course it would be very long, but would cool.
      Bonus points if it’s in chronological order

    Again, the stories and myths of our ancient world were creatively transported to a fantasy universe and asked the question of 'what if it was real?' while they echo our celts, Romans, Norman's, Arabs, medieval Asians in their fashion then wove their own stories around them.
    Damage my brain, more like tired me out with so much knowledge and speculation, you didn't hurt my brains😅

    I loved this!!! I want more horrifically long tidbit-type content. I'm obsessed with lore, and most of this was stuff that I hadn't ever heard fleshed out before, or hadn't ever heard at all. Thanks!!!
