More information on Swiss speeding fines

Hello everybody today we are talking about driving in Switzerland. Driving here is amazing. Except for one thing Swiss speeding cameras. These speeding cameras are called blitzes and they are literally everywhere. Like around every corner everywhere. Before moving to Switzerland I considered myself a fairly decent driver. I generally kept the speed limit. And I'd never gotten a ticket for anything Well actually once I got a ticket for running a red light. It was early morning and I had not drunk any coffee. I'm not even sure that I was really awake. It was well deserved. But I'd never gotten anything speeding-related. Not even a warning. Then after living in Switzerland For just 9 months I've gotten 2 speeding tickets and another just came in the mail. In my defense when I moved to Switzerland I did get a new car. 1.6 l inline 4 cylinder. 0 to 60 9.9 seconds. Of course with a Van like that you're gonna get speeding tickets but exactly how fast was I going. Ticket number 1. I don't know what came over me but I guess I just want to let her hair down and see what she could really do. Just let her go a little bit. Sure enough, a Blitzer got me. Going 2.5 miles an hour over the speed limit. That's right 2.5 miles an hour over the speed limit and I got a ticket. But then to make it even worse the swiss blitzer people subtract 3 km off of your total speed to make up for discrepancies in their equipment. So I got a ticket in the mail for going point 62 mph over the speed limit. Ticket number 2 I got in my Van going uphill with a Canoe on my Roof. I was like man I've got a power-up this Hill because I've got a Canoe on my roof. My Van is really powerful but sometimes it struggles on the hills. And I was focusing on powering up this Hill and they blitzer got me. 5.6 mph over the speed limit I mean that is a little bit faster. Ticket number 3 I have it in my hand But I haven't opened it. And I'm not going to open it until the end of the video. Because once I open this ticket I'm not gonna want to record anymore I'm going to be done. So if it isn't clear by now I don't love blitzer's and I Don't really like the way they're used either. But this is Switzerland and I am not Swiss and I am living in somebody else's country. So I do need to be respectful of their laws and how they choose to handle speeders. So I don't mean to be rude disrespectful to Switzerland or anything like that but on the other hand, I do think people deserve a little bit of a warning. Fortunately, when I moved to Switzerland my wife sat me down had the Blitzer talk. But others are not so fortunate I was talking to one American couple in they told me. Their 1st week of driving in Switzerland it they got $700 in tickets and didn't realize it until they came in the mail weeks later. And that's the problem in Switzerland the blitzer' Are generally pretty well Hidden and they are generally a Gray color that doesn't stand out. And that's kind of the idea that you can't see them. But if you didn't realize That there were speeding cameras you could be driving around thinking everything Is good and be getting tickets the whole time. Now they do Flash but people like me who come from places without speeding cameras may not know what to look out for. In fact, the 1st time I got a ticket I didn't know until my wife who is sitting right next to me Was like you just got a ticket that was a speeding camera. I was like I just thought I got Papyracee. And this is a common thing that foreigners coming into Switzerland don't understand how strict the speed limit is and that if you speed at all you will get caught. One great example of this is that in 2016 and there was a speeding camera put up on 1 of the major highways leading From Switzerland to Italy. This is where a lot of people go back-and-forth. In 6 month. This speeding camera gave out 68000 tickets. Now that is roughly one ticket every 4 minutes for 6 months straight. This one speeding Camera alone mates witchland 8 million dollars in that 6 month period. And I don't know for sure which direction the's camera was facing whether it was facing towards the traffic coming from Italy are going to Italy. But I'm going to guess that it was the traffic coming from Italy. I mean it was deathly the traffic coming from Italy. This video has been kind of I heart video for me to make As I've said I don't really like blitzer's and I'm kind of pull towards Being kind of annoyed about it and just ranting about it. hg

A funny side to the Tin Policemen story:
Speeders used to receive by post a copy of the photo made by the speed camera. It included the driver and passenger's face.
Too many spouses wondered why someone else was the passenger!
The police stopped sending the photo, the divorce rate dropped.

Heard: "...there should be a warning..."
Thought: There is. Round signs with red border and black digits.
Take into account that speed traps measure the real speed while your speedmeter shows a bit more than you're actually driving. Which also means, at that very moment you were measured, your speedmeter was not only "a little bit over the limit" but most likely quite a good bit. As example, in a 50km/h zone, to get a speeding ticket, your readout will be much closer to 60km/h than to 50km/h (60km/h minus measuring tolerance minus speedmeter tolerance equals final fined speed). It is quite easy not to get a ticket even without driving too slow. In a 50 zone keeping it between 50 and 55 should do the trick.

Why are the rules so strict?
We had a massive problem with speeding and regular very bad accidents.
As you know, the streets are in great shape. And Switzerland beeing fairly wealthy, many own vehicles with powerful motors.
There was even a national vote about the new rules...
    PS:
In my book the fines are way too high, espec. if your 5-10 km/h over the limit on a 80/100 or 120 km/h road.
I have no problem with very hard penalties for speeding in a 30 km/h zone..

Well, if I compare Austria (where I am from) and Switzerland (where I live), those expensive fines do work, if I am honest. Some are over the top for sure, but people in Austria usually dont care about getting caught speeding nearly as much as the fines are much cheaper.

Speeding isn't the only thing that causes accidents. Obeying traffic rules and keeping a good distance helps a lot, too.
Germany and Switzerland have very similar numbers for traffic deaths although Germans drive way faster.

    and unusable until you pay.

U probably wasn't just 3 km/h to fast. In Switzerland there is like a balance where the "blitzer" reduce your actuall speedlimit by 5km/h because of the different speed indicators of each car. So if you were 3km/h to fast, this probably means you were actually 8km/h to fast. Good thing is the ticket will be lower if u speed in a 120km/h zone than in a 30km/h zone..cause thats much more dangerous.

About the people coming from Italy.... In Italian highways the speed limit is 130kmph. you just keep your speed less than 150kmph over the speed limit (5kmph is the tolerance of your speedometer, 5% the tolerance of the autovelox and the worst that could happen is a small 47€ fine that should be cut to 50% if paid within a week or so. Eventually they realised that the burocracy behind this fine (paying for the letters, photos, or the lawyers to respond to the incorrect tickets, people that just will never pay...) is more expensive than the 23,5€ of average revenue. So is very rare that you even get it and you skip directly to the 173€ fine if you're going up to about 185kmph (still, 5kmph of tolerancy of your speedometer and 5% tolerancy of the autovelox) and again it will be cut in half if paid within a week. So as you can see speeding in Italy is not very punished and people are not used to give a lot of attention to be exactly under it, in fact the speed limits are very often lower than what the street is designed to handle just to be able to fine people an higher step.

You have to know the system to break the system. There are roads more likely to have 'blitzers' than others. But sure, who am I to talk to. I sold my car 6 years ago after I got so tired about all the tickets I collected over the years.. ;) But seriously, usually you can go up to 6 km/h over the speed limit without getting a fine. ..and yep, the various speed limits are a pain in the arse, but it's a tiny country where there is a settlement every 2 km forcing you to adjust your speed, so yeah..

  • @BMXaster

The trick is, if you wanna drive a mountain pass or something a little faster on your bike for example, go 1 run up and 1 run down slowly first and look out for potential speeding cameras. This way, if there are any, you know where they are and you also just warmed up the engine which is also good practice to do if we're honest.
Edit: Also if you know there is a camera or laser patrol coming up and you cross other bikers on your bike, make a wavey hand sign to them, signaling to slow down. They will also wave their hand for you if there is anything coming up.

Mate, there are about a dozen blitzers on the 35km between Bienne and Neuchâtel and that's more than you find on the 120km between Bienne and Zürich. Roads are littered with speeding cameras in the Romandie. More so than in the Swissgerman part. Except in the Canton du Jura, where the general consensus even within the government is that laws and rules are the works of the devil and should be broken where possible. They also have the highest taxes, lowest wages and highest unemployment rate.

The portable blitzers could be anywhere at any time, you never know where one is, especially in summer. I’m Swiss and i hate the blitzers, i once got a fine for Sfr. 700 for driving 104 in an 80 zone, i was thinking about something, not concentrating on my speed and there were police hiding behind a barn and i got zapped by the portable thingy in the cop’s hand, (the thing that looks like a blow dryer) and got pulled over. I got a letter in the mail to say i wasn’t allowed to have another fine like that in the next two years. That was in June 2016, and i learnt my lesson after that, now i keep a close eye on my speed limit.

In Australia there is a points system so if you are unlucky to be caught a couple of km/hr over the limit a few times you lose your license. I would rather pay forty francs and all is forgiven.
The main issue I have in Switzerland is that speed limits are very badly marked, there isn’t any consistency, they just put them wherever is easiest, and the signs are often dirty or half hidden behind trees. A few times I’ve been doing eighty and not noticed the start of a fifty zone.

    • @TrullaDerBergzwerg
      @TrullaDerBergzwerg 3 ปีที่แล้ว

That is true for some signs but most of them can be seen very well, at least that's my experience. Generally in the villages it's 50, in between the villages it's 80 and on the autobahn it's 120. If you are not sure what the speedlimit is, better go a little slower or look what the other drivers do 💁‍♀️ (that will not always prevent you from speeding tickets to be honest though 😅) Switzerland is relatively dense populated and therefore there are lots of villages and speedlimit changes, that makes it more difficult for foreigners, I totally understand the frustration with it.

Yeah, I definitely prefer the States, where everybody drives 10 (15?) over and enforcement is lax -- until that day (night?) when it isn't. Then, when you get pulled by a real, live policeman in an actual police car with flashing lights and everything, you engage in a battle of wits / charm offensive to negotiate the speed you are actually cited for, or the offense. Has the cop had a bad day? Is it near the end of the month and he's got a quota to fill? Are you from out-of-state? I've been let go for 35 over; I've been heavily fined for 10. 'Course, if you're some color other than White, different rules may apply, I'm told. Definitely much better.

The video is intended to educate those that may not be familiar with Swiss traffic law. Understanding the US driver fatality rate goes much deeper than speed cameras. Thank you for watching.🙂

@America meets Switzerland Wow, I didn't expect an answer on a video this old, and even less this fast 😀
You're absolutely right, there is much more behind the difference between fatality rates in Switzerland (and some other countries that are even better) and the USA. However, the approach to speed limits, be it how they're followed or how they are controlled and enforced, is an excellent example.
With this, my comment was more aimed at your audience then at you - as I unterstand, your wife is än ächti Zürcheri; my experience with Zurich makes me suspect you've been explained all this, in detail 😁

Switzerland is very different from other European countries in this respect. According to Wikipedia, Switzerland has one of the lowest per capita road death rate in the world. Yet, giving people fines for going 1-3 km/h over the speed limit consider most of the non-Swiss Europeans as bullying, 'cause this certainly doesn't contribute to the low death rate.

In the Uk we have cameras but not as many as Europe and we have police speed traps but not as many as the states... as with most government things here were like 45% European, 45% American and like 10% doing our own thing. Our fixed speed cameras 🎥 here though are painted yellow so you can slow down and then speed right up again after

Did you know that Switzerland was one of the most unsafe countries to drive in Europe? A LOT of people died here in car accidents. In the 70s about 1750 People died in one year just from car accidents. Now its about 250 per year. So yes we got really strict rules but we have a reason for that.

This is a very good point and something that should have been brought up in the video. However the video was not intended to criticise Swiss traffic law. But instead to be a warning for visitors.

And they'll mess you up for sure in America, especially if you're black.
I normally drive about 20% over speed limits and pay 50 to 100 a year for my heavy big toe.
Lowest wages are around 3500 a month. Do you really think somebody is looking out for those "Blitzer"?
Earning 8 dollars an hour is something different. It would hurt then. But it hurts me more, knowing that people don't get fair wages in America than paying such a small fine which tells me not to speed up too much. After all, you don't gain that much time, do you?

I can agree that they are some times annoying.
    But
Road is here for Transporting stuff. It's better if we transport things efficiently. If everyone drives at whatever speed it is just not efficient at all. unfortunately our cars are driven by humans and humans find it notoriously difficult to understand basic logic. I understand the drivers, I got tickets myself. But I also understand the legislators for doing this. I rather have it like this than having chaos everywhere.

  • @nachtaktiv1
    @nachtaktiv1 3 ปีที่แล้ว

Its very simple with these blitzers...
A round sign along the street shows a number on it.
If your speed exceeds this number, youre fucked here...
Last ticket i got was 2 weeks ago for 1km/h...im feeling ya.

  • @xxx_phantom_xxxw_t_a9479
    @xxx_phantom_xxxw_t_a9479 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    1. You were faster than signaled, that should be a fact, otherwise you can dispute the tickets in court.
    2. Your representation is wrong, the actually measured speed is deducted a tolerance value depending on the measuring device etc., so your actual speed was higher than you said.
    3. As long as you get a ticket, everything is still in the green area; Because we still have the speeder article with which you can even confiscate the vehicle and auction it for the benefit of the state if you exceed a certain limit.
    4. We Swiss certainly have countless rules and laws ... which we (mostly) adhere to, sometimes tricky for foreigners, but that's the way it is and it works ... most of the time. :-D

There's a simple solution to that. Pick yourself a nice artic, set auto steer and adaptive cruise control and chill in the right lane. Makes hardly any difference whatsoever in travel time and saves a lot of petrol.

Hello, This video was made for people who are unfamiliar with Swiss speeding cameras. At the time, I never thought that Swiss would watch my videos, and I should have been clearer. I have no issue with the law or the cameras. Rather, after hearing from several people who had visited Switzerland and not known that they were getting speeding tickets until they came in the mail weeks later I made this video. The intention of the video was to educate people who are not familiar with Swiss speeding cameras while being entertaining.
      Thank you for watching!

  • @nashtags

I always *love* (hum) when people do not respect the law and make videos to complain about being punished for not respecting the law. if you get ticket on Highway for 4 mph, okay, it's annoying. But if you get ticket for 4 mph in a village, it means you're driving is dangerous and if you hit a kid, at 60km/h you kill the kid. So just think about it next time before complaining on videos about not respecting the law. Enjoy Switzerland.

You got a ticket for 2.5 miles an hour after deducting a tolerance of about 8% of your speed. Drive 55 in a 50er zone and nothing happens. Drive 58 in a 50er zone you wine about a fine you get on 2.5 miles an hour.
    That's how Americans explain something.
Lie about half of the information and wine like a baby 🤦‍♂️
I still hear your president say "the way they treat me is just unfair, boo hoo" 😂
