    These traffic signs are standardized across europe. And don't tell me there are no general maximum speeds for different types of roads in the United States

    • @AmericameetsSwitzerland
      @AmericameetsSwitzerland  3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      We actually do, but they are used as more of a catchall for roads that do not see enough traffic to need signs. Usually, a road is analyzed and given its own speed limit.

    There's one more little thing though, I'm sure you've seen those "60" signs with a arrow pointing up and down below them. That means the speed limit is still 60 and hints to another rule: If there's an intersection and no speed limit sign after you've made it through, the speed limit reverts back to the default of the given road type, thus there needs to be a sign to repeat it. There will not always be an explicit 60-slashed sign in those cases (but in most). And tricky question sometimes is: "Was this a road entrance or an intersection?"

    Accidentally stumbled on your video and ... laughed wholeheartedly )))) it's both entertaining and very wisely explained! Well done and have lots of fun in this small jewel of a country. I'm already looking forward to enjoying you relating your experience with either following or being stuck in the middle of a column of tanks and the road rules for dealing with these situations lol

    Ok, I've binge watched all of your videos now after one got recommended to me, and there's one thing I don't understand... Why do you have so few subscribers and views? This type of content is the perfect length, informative and entertaining. And also your editing is very good. TH-cam's strange sometimes... You deserve more viewers for sure! Greetings from Graubünden :)

      I assume that most viewers are not interested in other countries lifestyle. I am Swiss living in the USA, and for me it is interesting to find out what an American persons experience is. It tells me, that that person is traveling, and is interested in getting to know the lifestyle of other countries.

    My folks moved to Fribourg when I was 19 and while visiting I drove a lot since my dad was cool always threw me the keys. I'm a Canadian guy and didn't find the signs too confusing then. Flash forward to Aug 2016, then with my 18 year old son we rent a little Audi for over 2 weeks of touring Switzerland. Things had changed to the more confusing resulting in a speeding box ticket sent in the mail for doing 6km over in a 2 lane roundabout near Geneva.
    100 Swiss francs plus 60 for being late since they don't accept bank drafts. It's a bummer but I'll be back, Alps of Europe are the best!
    Cheers Bro.

    These signs are not exclusive to Switzerland. They are the same in all of Europe. The only thing that's different is the colour of the signs: Green for dual carriage ways and express roads, blue for state roads and white for community roads. The rest of Europe has blue for dual carriage ways, green for main roads and yellow for small roads.

    Well observed, now that you mentioned that it looks somehow odd. With the numerous speed signs, it was probably nicer to always see what the current limit is.
    History: speed limits in Switzerland emerged gradually. When introduced they were higher than today eventually reduced following the energy crisis in the 1970ies and the forest crisis (Waldsterben) in the 1990ies. So initially that end-of-speedlimit sign made sense. Still true on unlimited German highways.

  • @swissarmyknife7670
    @swissarmyknife7670 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I totally understand you and apologize for this stupidity. Maybe it was useful 100 years ago, so that not everywhere needed a sign. But if you put acreduction and later an end of reduction, you need the same amount of shields, like you would need, if you put the actual number on it. And i am not even starting about the ridiculous number speed changes on the road. At some point its 80. 10meters later 60.

    meh. not from CH, but driven there 10 or so times. best advice I ever received is that all speed enforcement is by camera, not by people (police or otherwise) and all cameras , crucially, must have signs announcing their presence beforehand. So, basically I drive the prevalent speed or whatever I think feels safe until I see a speed camera sign, then I brake, like every other swiss driver. lol. no speeding tickets to this point (though I did get one parking ticket which I was able to easily pay online to the local authoritywithout incurring and additional car hire/rental car fee)!

      The nice thing about Europe is it's diversity. That is in some countries speed checks are announced, but usualy not in Switzerland. However there are tracks with such announcements. Other than such official warnings private ones are forbidden here (in Germany they are allowed and often mentioned in the radio).

    Everyone knows that Americans are not the most intelligent.
    But if there was a 60s board with the maximum speed before, it is clear that this shows that the 60s have been canceled.
    Logic is just not for everyone, what.

    • @AmericameetsSwitzerland
      @AmericameetsSwitzerland  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      We may not be very intelligent, but the sign is confusing because we use a different system. Each road is analysed and given a speed limit based on mutual safety factors. The limit is posted beside the road so you know the speed limit for that individual road.
      Thank you for watching!
