    We spent 6 months in India - just taking the train from place to place and eating... and eating... and eating. Everyday there was something new.
    Would love to go back!

      you got any videos of your 6 months of eating indian food?

    • @GlenAndFriendsCooking
      @GlenAndFriendsCooking 6 ปีที่แล้ว +41

      Unfortunately no - it was 2006, and a video camera was just too much to carry around then. Kinda why we'd love to go back, eat until we explode and film it all.

      Love Indian food too, but be careful if ever go there. The rape rate is pretty high, and the police and the government don't do much about it. A lot of men think if a girl walks outside at night or dressed revealingly they're asking to get raped. A lot of them don't really respect women. A lot of tourists get raped there too.
      If you ever go, go with a group of people or tough looking guys. Indians in India are not the same as the ones in Canada. I'm Canadian and I know

      Yes I agree, in kolkata we have a lot of good food, but we are lacking in food from the north east. May be it's the scarcity of the traditional ingredients. You can get some asamese food in places. But nothing more. If someone opens a traditional North Eastern food joint at mid range prices, he will be rolling in money in no time.

      Ankan Das lol... potato in a biriyani is blasphmy! 😋

    • @Abrox12345
      @Abrox12345 6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Radhika Vasudevan The point of putting one whole potato in there as opposed to smaller pieces is that it acts as a carrier for some of the stronger flavours. Potatoes are starchy and as the rice cooks, it steams inside the rice, releasing the starch and absorbing the flavour instead of letting it disperse unevenly in the rice (which does not naturally absorb flavour as much as potatoes do.)
      The only reason any sane human being would reject that perfectly balanced flavour bomb is if they:
      a) Have severely damaged tastebuds.
      Or
      b) Hasn't tried Kolkata dum biriyani yet.
      If potatoes in biriyani is "blasphemy" then I happily consider myself to be a sinner. 😈

      I don't mind broccoli, am getting used to it,

    • @poulomi__hari
      @poulomi__hari 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sam Warrior Okay, here's a tip:
      Marinade your finely chopped brocolli with salt and turmeric and leave it for around an hour. Then take some oil on a pan. Add some cloves, some cumin seeds, some chopped onions and potatoes. Saute them for 5 minutes. Add some chopped tomatoes and saute for two min. Then add ginger-garlic paste. After two-three minutes you will be able to smell the aroma. That's your hint. Add the marinated broccoli to the pan and fry it for another 10-15 min on a low heat. Slowly cook the Broccoli for next 15-20 minutes, until it leaves out all its moisture.
      Now you have the perfect spicy broccoli. (I havent asked you to put chillies on that. If you want, you can put some while cooking).
      You can serve the broccoli with fluffy rice, or flat breat, or noodles, whatever you like.

    In Calcutta, the Kolkata-style biryani has an egg and potato in it. In some places you have to ask for the egg, but most biryani places in Calcutta provide the soft and flavorful potato (or the aloo). I suggest you try Shiraz at the Mullickbazaar crossing or my personal favorite, the India Restaurant in Kidderpore. Both these places offer a huge selection of delectable meat-based dishes. As for the kathi rolls, try Arsalan, near the seven-point crossing. Ask for a roll without sauce. You will not regret it, I promise. Love your videos, Mike! :D

    Calcutta biriyani is actually lukhnoyi biriyani with potato and egg. Because it was the migration of Nawab Wajid Ali Shah, the last ruler of Audh whose capital was Lukhnow, to Calcutta forced by the British lead to the development of the typical Calcutta Biriyani. His cooks once ran out of meat while serving biriyani to a large congregation and introduced potato and egg to the recipe.

Just wish you could have sampled some more quintessential Bengali dishes, like Chingri Malai Curry, Betki Paturi, Shorshe Ilish, Aloo Posto, Shukto, Payesh, Radha Bollobi etc. And perhaps the traditional Bengali 'thali' with someone guiding you through the typical sequence of eating it, since you came all the way to West Bengal.
