I visited a friend in Serbia this summer and stayed with his family. His farther, who barely spoke any English, introduced himself as Bobby and (through translation) said he took the name from his all-time favourite player. I immediately knew I was in good company. It just goes to show the reach Sir Bobby Charlton had as a player and as a man.
That was a very beautiful and heartwarming tribute lads. As an Everton fan I send my deepest condolences, prayers and thoughts to Sir Bobby Charlton, his friends and family. An absolute legend for Manchester United and England. ⚽❤️🙏
Great tribute guys, I was traveling through Mexico back in 1999, I was up in the mountains in a small town, I had only just got to this remote town and was talking to the locals, when they found out I was English and not American! There faces light up and one of the gentlemen, shouted, Gary Lineker, Bobby Charlton, 66 World Cup!! Legend
Very moving Gary I saw Utd, usually at my team Spurs, in the 60s. What a player. The silkiest, smoothest runner with the ball there was and is no one who could touch his skill. Quite unique and deadly
Lovely tribute to Sir Bobby Charlton. I just look forward to seeing this podcast here, as I know at some point I'll be crying with laughter. these three just bounce off each other, a wonderful show lads, as always.
The Greatest imo. Balondor, World cup, League titles and European cup winner, plus MOTM in many finals and big games, and more goals and assists than any midfielder in British history. He's basically Gerrard with many more trophies. Unbiased Villa fan.
As a Liverpool fan I have to say Sir Bobby was a class act, and never let his success go to his head. A true example to all footballers and people in general today. YNWA sue bobby, some things transcend football
I was at that SPOTY back in 09, don't think I shall ever forget the standing ovation for Sir Bobby, and it didn't seem to stop for a good ten minutes, it was in Liverpool too. Really nice night that was.
I was 10 yrs old when we won the World Cup , I was born in Morpeth but move down to Manchester as a 6 yr old and became a Bobby Charlton fan as I missed my home then Bea came a United fan Months after the World Cup Bobby and Jackie were given the keys to Ashington and me and my brother went to my grandparents for a holiday . So my grandad took us to Ashington on the bus to watch them get the keys . There where so many people there they ran buses none stop from Newcastle and surrounding areas I was told there was about 200,000 people there When the car came past , Bobby was so emotional he just sat and waved with tears running down his face , but Jack was stood up waving and shaking hands , if he wasn’t sure how much people loved him before he did that day Bless him , Gods got one hell of a football team with him now , all the Busby babes back together
Great point regarding the comments before Sir Bobby passed Gary. These blokes deserve their day in the sun again. Only 11 Englishmen I’ve ever been jealous of and Sir Bobby is one
RIP Very sad Week For all Football Fans One of a Kind Player The Greatest english player WC winner what a guy Hell of a career All Condolences To Sir Bobby Family and all 🙏🙏
Micah's stories are stuff of legend! "I've got all the alcohol in ma fridge"...... That just drew me in! Great show lads, fantastic tribute to Sir Bobby Charlton. Keep up the good work.
Amazing tribute podcast guys thanks!...PS. just spent the best part of 50 mins trying to rub that white mark on the wall behind Alan off my laptop screen :D
Bit late but great podcast. Thought Gary's tribute at the beginning was very nice. Far too young to have watched him play, but being a united fan I've seen the clips, the documentaries, films that have come out over the years & what a man, what a life. Was good to see how many turned out to say goodbye.
Great tribute and great intro wasn’t awkward wasn’t down hearted it was pure memory and joy about sir Bobby, may he rest in peace and may I say as a young lad the impact Bobby Charlton has had on my dad and older family Is unbelievable. The only person to bring it home for England may he be at rest.
I always remember Sir Bobby being very calm and polite whenever interviewed. Gary doesn't understand the 10,000 hours rule, if I spend 10,000 hours practising football, it makes me the best footballer I can be, my best may still be way below the level that others can reach.
Can't speak highly enough of him. He's the greatest captain I think I've seen in my lifetime at our club - Newcastle l. I don't say that lightly. He's transformed our team and our defence. He played a first time volley assist the other day, that if it was Ronaldo we'd be hearing about it for years. Great player.
A wonderful tribute to Bobby Charlton👏🏻. Class podcast as usual! I love the insight you give on football & your honesty with a few glasses of vino especially the Big Meeks story. Keep it up lads.🙌
i love this podcast absolutely brilliant chemistry between the boys, would love to see a differnet dimension, and have a top fan join in to experience the experience.
Salah is an incredible footballer as am African what his done consistently over the years is truly admirable, BUT I watch Hazard play ever week as a Chelsea fan, my favourite player of all time (I'm 19 years old) he was amazing to watch. I can go on all day about the memories I have watching him
Gary O'Neil deserves a huge amount of respect, not only for what he did at Bournemouth, but now the Wolves team is taking shape, playing some great attacking football, and to have 12 points when he was hired less than a week before the start of the season is incredible
Saw Bobby play England vs Holland maybe 68 or 69 I remember asking who would win, I was told it wasn't if we'd win but by how much, in my memory I think we won 4 nil, he was spell binding, that good
This podcast is the best what happened to me in the recent time :). Keep it up guys! A question: if you could play for any other national team than England from any era, which one would it be, and why?
Great tribute Gary, my very first top flight match was also Leicester v Man Utd at Filbert St. Got to see George Best play but sadly never had the privilege of seeing Sir Bobby play. Sorry, but I remain a Utd fan to this day 🙂
The 3 FA youth cups with Duncan Edwards and all the busby babes to get over the mental trauma of the air disaster says everything one of a kind rest easy Bobby
World Cup winner, European Cup winner and Ballon d’Or winner…..only 9 players have achieved this in the history of the game. R.I.P Sir Bobby…. For reference the others are Gerd Muller, Franz Beckenbauer, Palo Rossi, Zinedine Zidane, Rivaldo, Ronaldinho, Kaka, and Lionel Messi, that’s the standard, but Sir Bobby did it first. The greatest English player, no question.
I'm 42 and so didn't really see Bobby Charlton or the 66 team play, even though I know a lot about Greaves with my dad being a Spurs fan, but I do find Charlton's death sad. It's soon the end of an era and only Geoff Hurst left from that group of men who achieved sporting immortality for this Country. Thinking of all the talent and money footballers get paid now and not been able to achieve what that 66 team did. RIP
Beautiful tribute. 2nd cousin of the great Jackie Milburn and all his brothers professional players he had a lot to live up to. And he eclipsed them all.
Speaking from the younger Gen I got curious and watched a few old school games in full. His striking ability gave me Scholes and prolificness gave me Lampard but he could beat a man like the Deco’s, Iniesta’s & Rui Costa’s. England hasn’t really produced a midfielder with those core fundamentals since who turned up on the big occasions as much. It’s good to take a deep dive every now and again at the greats to realise what was unique and what essentially stayed the same.
I would name drop here Johnny Haynes first £100 per week player and the best passer of a football that I have ever seen. Sir Bobby was a different type of midfield player he added goals to his game and that made him different
Now, I love That Peter Crouch podcast, big fan. But I actually think I like this podcast better. Both are great and I'll continue to watch both. But Micah, gary and Shearer just edge it for me. Brilliant!
my grandad was a Jacky Milburn fanatic, he only ever praised 2 other players, Duncan Edwards and Bobby Charlton, he told me in 1966 Bobby Charleton was the best player in the world
You can’t really compare him to any other English player of the modern era. Fast, a dribbler, amazing range of passing, goal scoring, two footed and lethal with both. RIP
Trippier for me is the best right back in the world, England are blessed in that position with the players we have there but he can defend he can attack his positional play and reading of the game is outstanding, he’s a leader on and off the pitch he’s good at set pieces for a right back he has absolutely everything and that for me is what makes him the best, he’s probably a bit underrated because he plays for Newcastle and not many people watch them but they are entertainers in this league and Trippier plays a massive part in that
The Kane/Spurs thing is a kind of a paradox. The team would be better if Kane was there, they would probaly score more goals, the attacking style of Ange would create more opportunities than he was getting with the way that Conte wanted to play, but with him not being in the team they don’t have the luxury of “fuck it, Kane will do something” so the rest of the team has to perform at a higher lvl than they would with him. Tbf it would be kinda funny if they would win something the first year that Kane left the team
Someone said last night (BBC) that he & Beckenbauer cancelled each other out in the '66 final - (they were both instructed to man-mark each other); maybe Beckenbauer was a near equivalent?
Hopefully someone can check this, but salah rarely gets braces and hat tricks, but he scores so consistently. I have a feeling he would be very high up in points won with his goals
It’s amazing how different players of yester year were great footballers and played for their jersey now we’ve got prima donnas only interested in money and if they own a Ferrari or a Lamborghini RIP Sir Bobby
I was born in 1957. When I was young Stanley Matthews was held in high esteem. I do recall a televised match in which he played and I didn't see anything impressive, other than that he was 50 years old at the time.
I always thought of Bobby as a less complete version of Di Stefano and Cryuff kind of both masters natural successor. The type of do it all generals, tacticians with perfect all around technique. I think Rooney was a different type of talent, more like a street bulldog midfield/forward attacker like more or less his twin Tevez, kind of jake for all trades, both fantastic players, but in a lesser level than the 3 masters Ive mentioned before.
Great point I’d agree with. Speaking from the younger Gen I got curious and watched a few old school games in full. His technique/striking ability gave me Scholes and prolificness gave me Lampard but he could beat a man like the Deco’s, Iniesta’s & Rui Costa’s. World Cup winner, Balon Dor and European winner....the only English man to do that. The greatest player England has ever produced. He stands above everyone, the only English player who could ever truly call himself the best player in the world. RIP to a legend.
In response to Micah’s comments about Italian lifestyle, i think it’s crazy that English clubs would think having a glass of wine with dinner the night before a game would have any negative impact whatsoever. It’s one glass! Clearly the positive mental aspect of having a nice glass of wine outweighs the (non existent) detriment.
R.I.P Sir Bobby...What an absolute legend and true to life humble, generous gentleman you really were...There will never be another Sir Bobby!!!...💞⚽️💞⚽️💞⚽️
The whole Rooney thing is mad. He scored SIX international goals against top 10 teams. He had TWO seasons where he scored more than 12 league goals. He was a striker. He achieved the records he did due to starting so young and having a long career, but he didn’t live up to his early promise. To compare him to Charlton is absurd.

As a Bosnian/former Yugoslavian/Balkan (or whatever other term I could use haha), I loved reading this! Ćao! :)
The technical ability of scholes, the power of Gerrard and the goals of lampard....effortlessly
Great episode 🙂 Lovely words paying tribute to Sir Bobby Charlton ♥️

He does understand it. He said what you’re saying.
That’s not true though. Look up “the myth of talent”. It’s all about training and practice, coupled with the desire to constantly improve.
Nobody will ever be like to sir Bobby Charlton ever
Trippier had two loans at my team Barnsley from city before he went to burnley. He stood out a mile
