"Back in 95 such a machine" its still such a machine in 23. Ive owned these bikes for nearly 25 years, 916, 996, 748 now 996 again but now alongside my third panigale now the latest V4. They all look & make you feel special no matter if you ride fast or not so fast but eveytime I go out on my 996 it makes me feel exactly the same as 25 years ago its that ducati feel & unless you've owned one its impossible to understand. One thing that always makes me smile is the same question I always get asked or commented on. Oh how do you ride that it looks so uncomfortable & oh "I couldnt ride that" and thats from lads in there 30's & 40's. I'll tell you a little secret. Its all about muscle memory & keeping yourself supple & fit. There's far to many riders out there that just cave in to getting older way before there time all because they cant be bothered to look after themselves & use it as a limp excuse to ride around on cruisers or those hideous looking multistrada things just because they're out of condition. There's nothing wrong with owning different types of bikes but don't judge sports bikes just because your out of shape.

I’ve kept my 748s since I bought it back in 2004. It’s still an event to ride after all these years. But don’t knock the Multistrada. The enduro version is a very capable bike. That you can ride for 9 hours straight and it’s quicker on most roads than sports bikes given the extra vision the higher position gives you.
Brings back memories: I had one. Re clutch sounds, the best was my 888SP4 with an open cover. A bike pulled up next to me at the lights and said "your exhaust's gone"!
Love my 996. That sound. You just can't beat it. 112-115 hp is really all I need for the street. And I don't give up a lot when I go to track days. I even catch myself turning back to look at it when I enter the house just to admire the lines before I turn off the lights. What a bike.

Great video keep them coming, I am luckily to own 996 SPS and it’s without doubt the best bike I have owned, the emotion from starting the bike to 5000rpm to 10000rpm in any gear is just wonderful, I also agree that the steering is a little slow, but the stability once leaned over is exceptional. What a bike that was, Ducati have always been streets ahead for looks and handling...I'm to old for that type of bike now but l can still appreciated the the beautiful design...
Wow, excellent video with a touch of class and excitement! In the past, I've owned two Triumphs and several cruisers. I've enjoyed all of them. I now own a BMW R18B. I'm in the process of hopefully buying a 1999 Ducati 748. I always wanted a Ducati and this may be the time.
Been waiting for my vfr to make it into one of the videos! Pleasure meeting you all those weeks ago, master cylinder has been rebuilt and a new rear tyre. Happy to let you out on it now. Still waiting for the dyno!
The VFR400 was my first sports bike, I had a 1987 NC24, then a '92 NC30 (which was stolen), and later a '95 NC35. Absolutely wicked bikes all of them. I keep looking for a decent UK spec NC30 but they're stupid money now.
Massimo Tamburini did such a great job styling the 916, that's for sure. Ducati's styling fell off a cliff once he left, there isn't a modern Ducati that I'd spend my money on. Judging by the way you were laughing at the beginning, I'd say the 916 hasn't lost its appeal! I've never owned a 916, but do have an '02 MV Agusta F4, which I think Tamburini did an even better job in styling than the 916. If you can, you should ride something like an '07 Monster S4RS (I had one), and compare it to the 916. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised!
I also never had a 748/916/996/998, but like you I have the F4 , 1st series, it was my dream bike. Unfortunately I've been riding 2 stroke sportsbikes all my life ( Cagiva Mito, Aprilia RS250) which I absolutely loved. The F4 although gorgeous with an a sound to die for is still a bulky inline 4, feels like a boat to me. Yesterday I test rode an early 748 from 1996 and it was absolutely PERFECT, Slim like a 2stroke, gorgeous, handling equivalent to the F4,sound is the best I've ever heard..
Another fantastic video James featuring a real Ducati classic 😀 Btw I’m looking forward to that knee down instructional video you mentioned 👍 Cheers Dave from Scotland
Hi James I’m doing my first track day at Knockhill in October hopefully I’ll get plenty practice beforehand getting the knee down 😀 Regards Dave from Scotland
A man’s bike. Makes Harley sound like a lawn mower. I own 998 bayliss (virgin), a 998 FE, 1098, Bagnaia replica (virgin) and couple of 60s 250 and 350. Nothing feels like a Ducati! Ride on.
Totally agree. Perfect power for the UK roads to have fun with, suspension could be more supple but ive embarrased many a more powerful bike on the twisties with it. I still have my dads 916, which he bought brand new. I too owned a vfr400 when i was 17 which was nice to see. Is this your bike?
That’s wicked you’ve still got the 916 especially from new! What a treat! The 916 was mine not the VFR although I had one when I was 17 too, awesome bike!
slightly better than my 2000 916 ST4, but great to see the enjoyment you've had and i still get from mine, I'm 71 and had it for 17 yrs and will never sell it, thanks
Very nice review of a very nice bike, James👍 Don't really understand why you would want 200hp as this is well enough for the road. I live in the Netherlands where we can only do 100kph /60mph. Five seconds of full throttle will get you in big trouble with this bike too 😉
hello pal don't know if anyone has mentioned but that hesitation on startup will be a faulty starter solenoid or the switch wiring plug connected to it...also it sounds like it has low fuel pressure on startup and low rpm 😬
@@jamescrawshaw71 I disagree, at the moment you can pick up a half-decent 748 for about 4-5 grand. A 916 is nearer 9-10, and the bikes are identical except for about 10bhp. The only time where I wish I had a bit more power is on a track where I get reeled in by litre bikes down the straights, only to go around them on the outside in corners... and there's things you can do to the 748 engine like the 853 kit (more power than the 916, or just replace the whole lump with a 999, 848, or 1098 motor if you want).
Great video. I think you more than adequately captured the excitement of this range of bikes. Ive got a 2002 998 and i recently installed a 999s deep sump engine into it. It made an already great bike even better. I cannot imagine ever selling the bike. Incredible.
Give these bikes time to teach you their characteristics and then you’ll enjoy them for they are the most. Unbelievable riding experience. Of all the motorcycles I’ve owned my 748 gives me the most exhilarating satisfaction of them all. Unless you’ve owned one of these it’s impossible to fathom that statement
Yeahhh it does but just not the same as a 916 🤷♂️ I recently had a blast on an 1199 around Oultan park and I couldn’t believe how fast that thing was for a v-twin! Unbelievable bike!
nice bike and great to see you're having fun. But, I think you're taking considerable risks on a public road. There is a lot of traffic and little roads joining yours. Someone could just not see you because they're distracted and till they do it's to late because a) you're to fast and b) you didn't expect the other road user to do something they shouldn't have. Doesn't matter how good you are as a rider.
Riding on the street and maintaining a little in reserve for safety's sake, the 916 would provide as enjoyable a ride as anything. You can cane all 100 hp of a 916, where on a 1299 or V4 Pani you might be at full throttle 1% of the time.
Totally agree, probably can ride a v4 pain at full throttle a bit more that 1% but I do agree with what you say! Modern super bikes on the road are a bit too fast now! Go check out my v4s video, can see how crazy that thing is!! Thanks for watching 👍
Good bikes just become old bikes with age - they don´t automatically turn into bad bikes! And often - at least for the more experienced among us - they are heaps more fun than those perfectly rideable tech-bombs with a dozen of electronic kindergarten-aunties on board. The 916 Ducati was the pinnacle of 90ies superbikes and even its looks inspired Yamaha´s R-series. It was no good commuter back then and still isn´t - but neither is a BMW 1000 RR.
I had one back in the day. Loved it but it did cost me a fair bit of money over the years. I think when audi bought Ducati over they did fix a lot of the electronic problems. @@theonlyredspecialMate I totally agree! They can be expensive however if you can do some fault finding yourself and fix it they aren’t too bad. The foggy days were great, I also remember Neil Hodgson racing the Orange one! Awesome! Thanks for sharing your memory’s of this beauty 🙌
One for the greatest motorcycles ever made. I have owned several of them and still have my 2000 996sps. I put it in dry dock a decade ago when I met my wife. Now that we are getting divorced, I plan to dig it out of the moth balls and ride her again.
@@jamescrawshaw71 I plan to. I rode the bike a lot in my 20’s when I lived in California. We lived in Idaho for 6 years and I mostly rode and raced off-road there. I have been driving my old riding roads in my Mustang as I am back in California. I miss riding my Duc’s and surfing. I am picking up my old long board tonight. Mustang convertible, surfboard and a Ducati. What else could you want or need is SoCal? I am moving to NC in the spring and look forward to riding tail of the dragon
Hmm wish I could agree there buddy but I don’t think so…..with the aviation industry using 1.5 million barrels of fuel per day I’m pretty sure my 1 litre motorbike engine isn’t doing too much damage 🤣 Not to mention China being the worlds largest co2 emitting country which you’re also doing nothing about. Funny thing about people like you is, you think the world needs saving and the best thing you can think of doing is to sit on your computer writing negative comments about what people are doing wrong!! Instead you could be ACTING on the problems and doing something about it! Go and get a job in politics or use your brain and find a new way of storing energy and make a difference to the world instead of talking about it…
It's completely pointless to rev a 916 in the manner of which you do at the start of this video. Keep it between 5-9.000 rpm, and the 916 will be much happier - as will you.
@@jamescrawshaw71 I'm sure you are just fine doing this to the engine. The engine surely doesn't care. My point is that you are revving the engine far beyond peak horsepower, and far, far beyond peak torque. That's completely meaningless. You riding a 916 in that manner demonstrates to everyone that you have no idea what this bike is about.
Well if you had the steering angle set in the right place it would have been a completely bike. Knob heads making videos about things that they don’t understand.
Nearly 100 at back wheel, but it doesn't matter because peak HP isn't everything, and the power delivery is why these 'inferior' engines beat the brilliant RC45 in WSB.
Back in the day superbikes really were super!
Analog. No rider aides.
Involving. Fun.
Still plenty fast enough.

Glad you enjoyed it! Definitely get one, it's an absolute blast
Awesome video, was the first Ducati I took for a test ride!
Good choice!
Been waiting for my vfr to make it into one of the videos! Pleasure meeting you all those weeks ago, master cylinder has been rebuilt and a new rear tyre. Happy to let you out on it now. Still waiting for the dyno!
Awesome mate! Was good to meet you too! I may have to take you up on that! We’ll have to get out for a ride I’ll be in touch soon 😁
@jacobewers9856 have you got instagram?
@jamescrawshaw71 yes mate, is just jacobewers!
Thanks for sharing! I love the bike it really lives up to all expectations!!!
95 Triumph 1200 Daytona will put a smile on your face for days. You should see if you can find one. Would love to know what you think of one.
May do! Thanks for the recommendation.
Another fantastic video James featuring a real Ducati classic 😀
Btw I’m looking forward to that knee down instructional video you mentioned 👍

Fantastic 😊
What fantastic video of old school Ducati is any chance more old shool Ducati bikes on great roads in Buckinghamshire too please then ☀️✊
Will try my best! Thanks!
I have a 998 Matrix - I totally get it - its a unique experience. great review btw 👍
Awesome! Thanks for sharing
good riding fast and safe
Thanks ✌️
Yes I love ducati! But where in England is this? It looked unbelievable beautiful in that small town. Got a sense of the Lord of the ring
It’s Thame bud 👍🙌
Man, I need to get me (back) one of these.
Get one 😁
A man’s bike. Makes Harley sound like a lawn mower. I own 998 bayliss (virgin), a 998 FE, 1098, Bagnaia replica (virgin) and couple of 60s 250 and 350. Nothing feels like a Ducati! Ride on.
Dream bike.. ❤
😍
Great video, I’m now on autotrader but they are only 8 for sale 😂😂😂
EBay 😉
Dean Harrison is currently racing a 916 in the Manx GP, thought that was really cool.
That is cool! Didn’t know that
Sounds like the royal orchestra simply stunning sound.
Sounds far better than a rice burner
Sure does! Thanks for watching. 👍
Thanks for sharing!! St4 Sounds great
Very nice review of a very nice bike, James👍
Don't really understand why you would want 200hp as this is well enough for the road. I live in the Netherlands where we can only do 100kph /60mph. Five seconds of full throttle will get you in big trouble with this bike too 😉
By the way, i've got a 996 biposto and a 999s monoposto. Both truly wonderful bikes.
hello pal don't know if anyone has mentioned but that hesitation on startup will be a faulty starter solenoid or the switch wiring plug connected to it...also it sounds like it has low fuel pressure on startup and low rpm 😬
Hi mate, no I haven't heard that one before, good to know though, thank you very much.
Such an iconic machine, I really fancy a 748 but already have too many bikes 😕
Get the 916 or more, it needs the power I think 😁
@@jamescrawshaw71 I disagree, at the moment you can pick up a half-decent 748 for about 4-5 grand. A 916 is nearer 9-10, and the bikes are identical except for about 10bhp. The only time where I wish I had a bit more power is on a track where I get reeled in by litre bikes down the straights, only to go around them on the outside in corners... and there's things you can do to the 748 engine like the 853 kit (more power than the 916, or just replace the whole lump with a 999, 848, or 1098 motor if you want).
Not a 916 though is it 😉@@TheOriginalCoda
@@jamescrawshaw71 If you look at the badge on the fairings, no. The rest of the bike apart from the pistons and barrels, yes, it is.
Great video. I think you more than adequately captured the excitement of this range of bikes. Ive got a 2002 998 and i recently installed a 999s deep sump engine into it. It made an already great bike even better. I cannot imagine ever selling the bike. Incredible.
Thanks for sharing sounds like a beast 🙌
Very impressive commentary. Great review. New sub.
🎉
Welcome aboard! Thanks for watching, much appreciated 👍🙌
Awesome, thanks for sharing
Suggest you cover the tacho too. The cops know what gear ratios are.
I think people forgot the V2 exists still and it’s over 160hp and is a Vwin
Yeahhh it does but just not the same as a 916 🤷♂️ I recently had a blast on an 1199 around Oultan park and I couldn’t believe how fast that thing was for a v-twin! Unbelievable bike!
I think the only more modern bike to directly compare with the 916 for that visceral V-twin experience was the RC8.
KTM super dukes
Got one love it
Legend 🔥
nice bike and great to see you're having fun.
Thanks for the tips!
I want it. Got a Zzr1100 now for shits and giggles but back in the day it was an rgv250. The big bikes wouldn’t stand a chance in the twisteys.
Agreed! 😁👍
❤ I wiah
own one, great review, bike porn, simply beautiful machines sometimes just look at mine in disbelief at how gorgeous it is
Love this bike but it is so clumsy. I can not wait until I finally can drive the yellow one from my dad
I don't think it's clumsy at all mate! I thought it was really sharp 🤷♂️
nice one, i wonder what its like next to a 998
Probably very similar! Although a little more power never goes a miss does it 😁
I’m curious how a modern Triumph Thruxton RS will compare to this bike 👍
Can’t compare 😉 Nothing is worth comparing to this haha. Too iconic
What roads in Buckinghamshire mate, I’m not far from there
These are out towards Thame way mate 👍
Nobody said it was bad 😉
I had one back in the day. Loved it but it did cost me a fair bit of money over the years. I think when audi bought Ducati over they did fix a lot of the electronic problems. I lost my lights once on a trip down south of Ireland when it started to rain.
These bikes always remind me of watching Carl fogarty with my now departed father.
Till it breaks down.
Great review.
How do you record your audio ? And what go pro are you using ?
Go pro 8 I think. And I just put a mic in the helmet and connect straight into the go pro 👍

Thank you .
I always refer to Ducati as the Ferrari of bikes.

What do you 🫵🏽 love more a 4T or 2T 👇🏽
One for the greatest motorcycles ever made. I have owned several of them and still have my 2000 996sps. I put it in dry dock a decade ago when I met my wife. Now that we are getting divorced, I plan to dig it out of the moth balls and ride her again.
Yeahh budddyyy!!! Awesome story! Get the old girl back out in the sun 😁
Hate to be the buzz kill but you are, straight up, killing the very thing that we ALL rely on, planet earth.
Go and get a job in politics or use your brain and find a new way of storing energy and make a difference to the world instead of talking about it…
The EU put an end to dry clutches……
Dogs 🤣
It's completely pointless to rev a 916 in the manner of which you do at the start of this video. Keep it between 5-9.000 rpm, and the 916 will be much happier - as will you.
But how would you hear it rev up? 🤣 Absolutely fine to do this to engines bud.
This man wants to die on the road…
Hahaha not sure I do but thanks for the assumption 🤣🤣
Engine, not motor
So they’re not motorcycles?
@@privatepilot9233 yes. motorised cycles, what exactly would a motorised motor be?
Same thing 😎
@@jamescrawshaw71 negative
Well if you had the steering angle set in the right place it would have been a completely bike. Knob heads making videos about things that they don’t understand.

@@mrgrey9584 Yeah quicker to get the parcels delivered that were attached to the back of it 🤣
75 bhp on back wheel at best vtwin teeth rattler
Haha gotta be more than that 🤣
Nearly 100 at back wheel, but it doesn't matter because peak HP isn't everything, and the power delivery is why these 'inferior' engines beat the brilliant RC45 in WSB.
😁
