Ducati 916 - The Most Beautiful Motorcycle Ever Made

  • The Ducati 916 needs no introduction. Widely considered to be the definitive superbike of the 1990s, it is known for being as beautiful to look at as it is to ride. The star of countless music videos, films and lifestyle advertisements, the 916 made a tremendous impression and became loved by bikers and non-bikers alike.
This film looks at the Ducati 916 SPS - released to homologate the new 996cc engine for Superbike competition. The previous 916 crankcases maxed out at 955cc and the SPS featured reinforced crankcases, wider case mouths and stud spacing to match. As a precursor to the Ducati 996, the 916 SPS was an impressive machine.
The Ducati 916 SPS is just as much of a thrill today as it was in 1997. Experience the most iconic motorcycle of the era in this detailed review.

This was the period of the ‘born again biker’ when guys who rode 125 and 50ccs when they were kids had loads of money, due to the financial boom.
This was also the period of the Honda Fireblade and with eejits, with more money than sense, I treated plenty of them in brain injury and spinal cord injury.

@@Nick-dz4ml You don't understand that ride a Ducati is like riding a Ferrari, it's a bike to be taken care of. They're objects of collecting and more you ride and the less they're worth. They're bike to use few and to turn on occasionally to run the engine. There are lots of bikes to use to cover many chilometres, but not a Ducati 916 or in general bikes that have done the history of the present motorcycling.

Back in the day I spotted one up in the mountains just outside Boulder CO. I signaled the rider to pull off to the side of the road so I could get a good look at it. I wasn’t familiar with Ducati or the 916 model. But I knew I was looking at something special. The trellis frame and dual under tail exhaust were truly a work of art. If I recall the ole boy riding it said it was a years wait and cost him $18k. I completely agree this bike is one of the most beautiful bike ever created.

Proud to say at 25yrs old I owned a 996S, what a fucking bike. Shit to ride on the road but once you got on a track it all made sense and came alive like nothing I've experienced since. Incredible design, incredible sound, great memories. The only bike I've owned that people will wait for you to start it up and ride away from the petrol station before getting back in their cars. Once you push the start button, you nod and smile at a complete stranger in simple recognition of such a thing. It was an honour to have been one of the lucky few

I remember the first time I saw a 916. I was at an Italian bike show (I was riding a Guzzi Le Mans at the time) on the south coast of NSW Australia. This bloke showed up on a brand spanking new 916. He had ridden the 220klms down from Sydney. The bike was a show stopper. It wasn't even entered in the show but drew a crowd. Another bike to show up was a Gilera Nuovo Saturno 500. Both Italian works of art.

Torque throughout the rpm range is for real, even with the lower displacement model and the whole ride experience is just as visceral as with her larger siblings. I had a 1998 748S for a couple of years and it was an exquisite experience in every way. I had to let it go because at 68 years of age I was upping the chances of painful demise. I quietly weep inside every time I see any of the Tamburini masterpieces. Although I can say I owned one and knew it a deep level, it doesn't make up for the sensory overload of the noise, vibration, heat and speed. There's nothing like it. Motorcycling purity?

Had one in 1995 , took it out after buying it from Guy Webster, the owner of that bike museum in Ojai California, what a collection of rare Ducati vintage low cc custom racebikes from italy.
He died not long ago, what a great enthusiast and all the stories he told. Look him up, he was the exclusive Rolling Stone photographer of the Rock stars (like Rolling Stones , etc.)
Anyway, that 916 was so stiff, definitely a race bike on the road. If you wear glasses, you better be on ultra smooth roads , I found out the hard way as your glasses will bounce up and down all over your nose.
Sold it 2 weeks later. Super hot from exhaust burning your lower body. Impossible in any stop and go traffic. Got into Bimotas where the designer of this 916 , Massimo Tamburini created more Bimota masterpiecies.

Back in 1997 I was 17 and had my first motorbike which was a Kawasaki KH125. I passed my test in October that year and the likes of the 916 was bikes I could only dream of for several reasons. First I was restricted to 33bhp for two years and secondly, I would never beable to afford the insurance let alone the cost of the bike. The 90s were a good time compared to now. I do not want an electric motorbike.

Wow!! What a great motorcycle. The first time I had seen one it was lust at first sight. I swore that I would have one, well I did not get the 916. But I do love my 2012 848 evo se hands down the best bike I've ever owned.

I am a 90s born and it is in the 90s only i watched this TV show in which there were guys with different bikes type used to Chase Crimes on bikes. Maybe there were 3 bikes but my blurry memory tells me there were two bikes, one was cruiser and other one was sports (think it was Ducati could be in yellow..not sure)..always tried to find that TV show name but couldn't find it..
90s were the time when there were good machines no matter if its bikes or cars! Group C race brought good engines and cars especially V12s, Type B rally cars that only hosts men with balls, Isle of Man TT host man with balls too but with skills to control bike while waggling!

I owned a 996S for some years, now I regret selling it! Love the design, sound and especially the amazing handling on curvy roads. One small comment to this very good video, regarding the engine for the 996S, as I recall it the engine was the same as for the 996SPS, the power was some places claimed to be 123 hp and other placed 128 hp. The standard 996 was, correct me I I'm wrong, producing 113 hp.

I had a 1200 bandit in 2002 , I went for a ride on father's day in the Northumberland hills , coming out of a dip in the road uphill a 916 came over the hill , absolutely beautiful , and also THE most scariest thing I've ever seen in my life, why?? Because it was on my side of the road and heading straight for me at a closing speed of 140+. We hit head on , I still don't know how we survived , his broken arm was far less than my life changing injuries , broken arm ( plated ) wrist ( screws ) right leg amputated above the knee , I know I shouldn't , but I hate these bikes with a passion , and all the other bikers that ride the same way as that prick does , overtaken on blind bends , brow of hills , these knob heads killed my love of motorcycles stone dead.
