2002 Ducati 998: The Boomerang | Petrolicious

  • Is it practical to ride an Italian sportbike from Amsterdam to Cape Town? Hardly. But if you have the mechanical know-how to improvise repairs on a Ducati 998 in the middle of the desert, the only thing holding you back from a continent-crossing adventure is the will to start one-at least according to Peter Muurman. He has some solid supporting evidence though, seeing as he’s taken his 998 through 54 countries and racked up nearly 100,000km in the process. It takes a certain outlook on life to take on journeys of this scale, and if you complete them, you’ll never see the world the same way again.

      Sven Klaas - they should take this bike in and retro-fix it all up (not adding electronics or complexity, just rebuilding used parts etc.) and then finance more adventures.
      Now that would be an ad campaign!

      Was Saskatchewan as boring as I've heard (like Kansas in the US)? That sounds like a cool trip, and doable since Niagara is only 1.5 hours away from my home. What route did you take?

    • @rymichael7203
      @rymichael7203 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Jason Offord if you want a great ride to take you out and then back home then do the Great Lakes ring, which takes 4 days.
      Going west, I left niagara and went north to Tobermory and crossed on the ferry. I slept my first night at a campground on the other side, using a #HennessyHammock.
      Up through Manitoulin islands to the Trans Canada. I rode the TCH all the way to Lethbridge Alberta.
      Through northern Ontario, I would suggest not riding after dark due to wildlife and the distance between fuel stations. I never let the tank get below 1/4 and always google mapped where my next few chances for fuel would be. With the hammock it is easy to sleep anywhere with trees.
      When I got to Alberta I went south through Crowsnest Pass, which is hwy 4 I believe. Took that straight across to the coast.
      It’s actually a pretty straightforward ride. The scariest ride was through Manitoba and Saskatchewan because it is flat and there were a lot of trucks. I also had three days of bad weather across the prairies, so my visibility was not great.
      If I was to do it again I would probably allow 8 days and cut the two 1000km days in half. I had to get to BC to meet up with some friends flying in. When I got home, by the time my stuff was inside and I had a drink, they were walking in my front door. The exhaust on the bike was still hot.
      Enjoy the ride if you try it. The prairie sky is huge and alive. If you appreciate it for what it is you won’t be bored.
      For reference, it cost me less then 200$ in fuel. I spent more on food than anything else. I stayed in a cheap hotel one night in Lethbridge to go to a rodeo, get a good nights rest and wash my clothes. The whole trip was under 500$.

    Hey - Michael Hutchence is an Aussie! (Some idiot had to say it - may he rest in peace). What a great spirit (both Peter and Michael). As a bike tourer and a dad, now I am lucky to be able to take my 9yo son and next year my 8yo daughter on long bike trips here in Australia. Peter's outlook is refreshing indeed and I can't wait to show this to my kids when they get home from school today! We also love "On Her Bike" - another like minded and free spirited adventurer, this time wrapped up in a beautiful woman. Cheers and thank you from Sydney - Dave

    This bike is beautiful, I had a Cagiva Mito over 20 years ago and it was a teenagers dream, not quite a Ducati but it had the looks and ergonomics similar, which meant a lot to a new biker learning to ride, one day I hope to own this bike or one of the variants from that era. You can literally hear the joy of ownership in this video.

    At a bigger scale it remember my sv 650s bike trip. Did 5000km from paris to south spain 6 years ago at 23 years old. I just regret to just have taken pictures but not video, but i wanted to be with myself. It was a blown away experience and since i didn’t stop visiting one country Per year, close to my homeland with small trips and a big one in new zealand, 7 month. The one need years to get back to your life. The more difficult is to came back , to sit again in a day to day job but planning the next trip is the way. It make also some people jealous because they are trap in relationships / day to day job so it’s a good radar to spot bad energy people like that. So inspiring man, i wish i were good at mecanics but for the moment i just enjoy riding and maintaining good. Doing trip open your mind about culture people and getting out of your comfort zone make you feel the true libery but also, i learned that is not only the places you visited, it’s the people you meet that make your trip. Then i realized you can have also that feeling near you with a different approach. Exploring your environnement, make connections with people. don’t need to go other side of the world, just be youself and it will make your life a rich journey and the good people will come naturally. Do not wait the trips only to live.

    Wow this is amazing. My dream bike and it’s so refreshing to see it been ridden and toured on and enjoyed. Beautiful bike and beautiful scenery. I own a 1993 Ducati Monster M900. It’s immaculate in fantastic condition but I ride it every chance I can. It has 41,000 on the clock and these engines are solid if well maintained and serviced. Ride safe and keep on riding 😎
