This new thing of being bothered about what a bullet does at 350/400 yards and even longer ranges is for the most part not relevant. Very few hunters can hunt ethnically at these ranges. What is more appropriate is to determine what hunt you are going on next and what the conditions most likely will be, what game you after. Then you can select the rifle and cartridge combination that is available to you. This is where the 30-06 and 308 trump most other just because of the number of options to choose from.

Biggest advantage to 30-06 is, you can find Ammunition everywhere. If you hunt in remote parts of the country you can pick up ammo from a lot of mom and pop general stores. I'm yet to see any of the more exotic Hornady PRC cartridges available. You are not going to find 6.5 prc .300 and 7mm prc in remote mom and pop stores. In fact most of those individuals probably never heard of said cartridges. I live in Appalachia I can confirm this. The more common cartridges are still king in my neck of the woods. 30-06 has an excellent reputation for killing large bears and wild hogs alike. Our state does have a limited elk population that is huntable provided you get lucky and draw a tag. The guys that I've known who have drawn elk tags, most of them run tried and true 30-06. Don't let tacticool or any Gearhead competitor tell you the 06 is inadequate. If you get the opportunity to hunt in Africa, a PH would rather see you bring old 30-06 rather than one of these new exotic cartridges. In my opinion the 06 set the standard on what a big game cartridge should be. The 30-06 simply works. It does it's job well.

30-06 with modern projectiles isn’t even in the same category of the 30-06 from back in the day. 190 accubond LR going at the same speed as a 165 or 180 grain traditional soft point or round nose aren’t even comparable, let alone the newer modern powders. Taken all north American game animals, hell even the 30-30 was used on big bears before the 30 06. As far as it being better than a 270 winchester that argument is older than both of us. Glad you young you tubers no better than all the great writers that came before you tube. Better bullets are the only advantage, though old corelots worked fine. Your comments on cartridges we grew up with and have 50 years experience with is not what modern gun people are curious about. You could push a 130 grain Barnes TTSX to 3250 FPS with temperature stable powders. Probably you can go faster if you measure the case head with a micrometer to check for safe pressures. That’s a screaming impact velocity and flat trajectory for most big game hunting harvest distances. The bullet would maintain most of its mass and shank to deliver devastating wounding. This is well above the the traditional 150 grain speeds of 2,700 fps. Certainly .30-06 rifles don’t have fast twist barrels to stabilize long bullets; and I contend most hunters will never need those high twist rates and heavy long bullets anyway.

The ol -06 ... you can go into any sporting store on the planet and purchase ammo and hand loading drastically improves ballistics and you can even AI it to futher improve it .... the 6.5 creedmoor is excellent for what it was created for... to compete directly with the 308 in law enforcement and sniper applications., even less recoil ,less powder used great barrel life and bettered the 308 ballistics and is a very inherently accurate cartridge, I own a 6.5 CM and don't consider it a big game cartridge at all just a target rifle... that's what it was designed for and it is a excellent target rifle long barrel life (can easily shoot 5-10 rounds without heating the barrel to much) accurate, very low recoi, easy to load for ,great case life ,uses very little powder ... but again wouldnt consider it a big game cartridgel

@@ReloadingWeatherby I can respect that. Personally, I agree with most of what he said in the original video - but I absolutely disagreed with him saying to replace the .280 AI with a 7 PRC, or a .30-06 with a .300 PRC. Don't get me wrong, I like the PRC cartridges - a lot... but you can't really say that a magnum is a good replacement for a balanced cartridge.
In my eyes, the best modern replacement for the .30-06... is the .280 AI. Maybe 6.5 PRC too, but I'd personally put it in a slightly 'lighter' class than the '06. To me the only thing that the '06 really has over the .280 AI of course is availability, but ignoring that, it's the 180gr-220gr bullet capability that would be beneficial for stuff like bears or other big/dangerous game at close ranges.

As a hunter, reloader, and career shooter(I retired from the Marine Corps and other Government service lol) I have learned that there is no other need for anything more than an 06. Where I live it is still a renowned cartridge loved by many and still feared by many more lol. The range of bullets and weights that you can use and that are READILY AVAILABLE is almost unmatched by any other cartridge especially in longevity and usefulness. Ehh, 99%+ of shooters shouldn't be taking shots at an animal beyond 300 yards. Both will work well for game up to Elk inside 400 yards as well. For the 1 half of 1 percent or less who can ethically take a shot on an animal beyond 400 yards there's other calibers that perform much better than 30-06. All magnums and will shoot flatter, fight wind better and retain more energy down range than 30-06 will. On top of that modern brakes and suppressors if someone chooses to use them will mitigate enough recoil that the difference between a braked magnum and unbraked 30-06/308 is almost indistinguishable. I have a braked win mag that's under 10 pounds ready to go and it's pleasant enough to shoot that I've had kids shoot it without issue.
The big advantage of 6.5 Creedmoor that's being left out here is recoil impulse and rifle package size. Recoil from 6.5 Creedmoor is half of the 30-06 or less. For a new shooter who doesn't have the experience and training for recoil management and mitigation they can develop a pretty nasty flinch, especially in light weight rifles that are unbraked with heavy for caliber projectiles like you're mentioning. Same rifle lines from the same brands in the 2 calibers are usually a little bit lighter and around an inch shorter for the same barrel length. Someone doing some back country elk/deer hunt can appreciate the small weight savings and not getting hung up on branches as easily.
That's not to say 30-06 isn't a great all around cartridge option as it can be for the right person, but for most people some other options are probably just a bit better when all factors are considered. In my opinion, 30-06 is the right choice for someone who grew up shooting, has the fundamentals of marksmanship down, and only wants 1 rifle to do everything from pigs and deer to elk and bear while keeping the range under 450/500 yards assuming they're capable enough to make an ethical shot at that distance. If they're new, I generally advise them to pick a bullet diameter they like between 6.5, 7mm, and 30 cal, start with a short action rifle there and if they get to the point of needing to shoot further than that caliber is capable of with the skill to match, then pick a magnum in the same diameter.

Even though I stopped where I did because I was happy with the accuracy and velocity, it did appear that possibly velocity could be expanded beyond that point.
