Don't Waste Your Money on this VEVOR Tool

- I have been an advocate for lesser expensive tools and parts for a long time. I am a huge fan of the Middle and upper tier tools at @harborfreight with their Hercules and Doyle lines. I have had some pretty good luck with some AM parts on ebay and amazon. In fact I have an old blower that I put an aftermarket carb in a long time ago and it runs fine after many gallons of fuel.
This is getting to be ridiculous though. I have a Vevor #chainsaw #tool for grinding your chains and this thing is a big NO from me. Now, I do understand they may not all be like this but, the quality it so poor on this thing, it should not be for sale.
I think it had lots of potential but it is a big miss to me.

Thanks for the heads up👍🏻 companies today sure can make a product look good on camera. But that amount of runoff is unacceptable!
yes, way to bad to be even remotely usable. Maybe if the Dressed the wheel 80% down, the wobble would be less of an issue?? hahaha.... not happening here buddy. Thank you AP!
One reason i am strictly a hand filer. It took me years to master hand filing but final after about 12 yrs of cussing my filing. Boom it all came together. I advise people learn how to hand file . it dosnt matter how many chains ya got. handle filing can be done out in the field and only takes a few minutes. Thanks for the review Oakie.
hand filing is sure excellent and as long as you keep the saw out of the dirt or metal, it can be a quick deal getting back to cutting well again. I just would like to have options for when I get a bit behind. Thank you again!
Wow! I bought one a couple of months ago, way before I saw this video. I checked mine and it runs straight and true. No issues at all. Had the HF and it was horrible. The knobs broke and it was just junk. I will be buying the cordless for when I am away from the shop.
So glad that yours worked out for you! Had I purchased this myself and not received it from someone else, I would have returned it and tried it again. I had pretty good luck with my harbor freight before, but it just simply didn’t have enough adjustment on it
After seeing that run out, I'm glad I spent the money on the Oregon. I had actually looked into some of the Amazon options when I was upgrading from the Harbor Freight. Ultimately, my decision was based on past experiences with the Oregon grinders, I had used them at previous employer's and knew what to expect as far as it quality.
Excellent video and info!
Man, I sure would like to have one of them Oregon Units. I keep getting bit by the knockoff cheap things. I actually need to do a video recapping all of the junk I have had that literally is not worth buying. Can you tell me what Oregon unit you got?
@@oakiewoodsman I have the 520-120
Thank you Bobby. That sure looks like a nice one and in the upper echelon!
I have the same machine only quirk I find Is the chain clamp doesn't clamp well and other issue but doesn't bother me much is you can force the head to move la bit. The stone quality in my case caused the same run out, when I used better quality stone and cbn wheel fixed the run out on the machine I have hopefully if you dig deeper it fixes your run out and vibration problem
***edit*** I use tecomec stone cbn I dont recall name off top of my head
I certainly eventually want a good working quality machine with a CBN wheel. I think it would be a worthwhile investment for sure! Thank you for sharing.
I also have the same looking grinder. I use the CBN wheel. Yes you can apply too much force when grinding but for homeowner use I would definitely it again.
You're right, I had the exact same problems. I think I can see the bolt on your motor spindle is way out of center. I actually bought the exact same one you have, I had to re-machine the collars. Also, I had to beef up the the chain vice and the bracket you pull the chain against. I bought mine from Ebay and was going to return it but Vevor offered me a 50% discount so it only cost me about £50, which made it viable to put right.
That is cool that they gave you break and that you had the ability to take care of the poor production issues. I am unfortunately not able to repair this as of now and would really like to get an Oregon one. Thank you for watching and sharing your experience with us all!
@@oakiewoodsman Just another note, once I sorted the problems with the grinder I purchased a £100 CBN wheel from Baltic Abrasives, but to my dissapointment the CBN wheel had a wobble in a portion of the wheel. I'd had it a while before I fitted it so could not return it, by careful bending and soft hammering in the high spots I managed to true it up within an acceptable 3 thou. So to everyone who's going to buy an expensive CBN wheel, check them for wobble as soon as it's delivered.
That is a great tip! I would love to have one of those myself. This is a GREAT tip. Thanks for sharing once again
I have a Timber Tuff its a good sharpner but it has a few of the same quirks the cam take alot of pressure to hold the chain till you get it properly adjusted and the feel for it. One thing i really dont care like is all the cheep plastics or pot metal where there is threds but were only pay $100 what do we expect.. The wheels that come with them some are really poor quality and are not unsable i bought better ones. If the shaft has run out i put a indicator on mine it was good only a few thou. the washer and caps screw are not in a machined pilot like the wheel is so it will wobble some. If your shaft has excesive run out im sure Vevor make it Right i never had a problem with them. Maybe i need to make a video on improving the Vevor one!
If I would have purchased this item, it would have surely gone back for an exchange or a refund. If I had time to tinker, it would be interesting to troubleshoot it some more. I am not going to pitch it (though I probably should) cause I have few ideas like crazyfeller mentioned below. Thank you for sharing and watching!
Yes you can dress the wheel on it to true will help till you take it off but it still may run out of balance and vibrate but it will work. I marked my wheels in and out with a witness hub shaft to wheel also it helps them run better. I had two Nelson grinders to that are super quality wheels do some too if your not careful with the backer paper on the wheels also.
interesting. Thank you
My Oregon has a little runout not in the motor but in the bushing on the end of the shaft.
If I have bad wobble I can often clock the bushing/wheel and reduce it. Sometime it takes a few tries to get it running smooth.
With yours either your arbor bushing was machined incorrectly or the shaft is bent.
Do in your opinion, is this one worse than what you have seen on yours even when it isn't quite happy? Thank you Matt!
@@oakiewoodsman I just get a "rumble" and I can tell on the wheel that it is only touching in one area... but it is way way less than that.
The way the screw wobbles I think yours is in the motor shaft but I could be wrong
They all have some runout. Try changing your wheel. It may reduce when you dress the wheel.
Thanks for sharing @christophercollins3460. Would the arbor stop wobbling if it was just the wheel?
The face of arbor may not be square. I have found on my timbertough grinders that occasionally the paper label on wheel will make the wheel run out side to side. I have a video on my channel with the way I set mine up.
Thank you for watching and leaving some tips. I have wondered what would happen if I tried rotating the assembly around but I really do not have the time for it!
👍👍 I did a video in mine a few months ago- more for grinding for Indiana Doug. Same issues. Take the wheel off, it will still wobble. Mine has a really bad vibration.
Will relegate mine to rakers most likely.
You know, if I start grinding my chains with another grinder someday, maybe this would work out quite well. If you dress the wheel flat or on a slight angle, that little wobble will not matter would it? Thank you for bringing this up!
You can shim the wheel and you can dress it as well. It’s possible to get both radial and axial play out- but when you remove the wheel or if it spins on the arbor, start over again!
Ya, if I was a stage where I felt like I had some free time to tinker, I wouldn’t mind giving it a shot. For now, I believe I may just hand file or EzzDoo it!
Love watching, thanks for sharing
I sure appreciate you being here and letting me know you enjoy the videos. Thank you again and thanks for watching!
I am saving for a Stihl grinder. Thanks for the info Joe.
I actually have not seen one of them. I should take a look. Thank you!
I hope to move to regular hand sharpening instead of using a 2-in-1 sharpener soon. The 2-in-1 is great if you only use one or two different chain guages.
As far as hats go, I rotate between different hats from the local farmer's co-op.
I am wanting to do some more research on the 2 in 1 setups. I have a suspicion that I would like to test out. We will see about that however. Thank you again KR!
@oakiewoodsman I mixed up my terminology a bit. I meant pitch rather than gauge.
They're great for someone like me, who only uses one saw and chain pitch. If you use a variety, it's probably better to stick with the more traditional filing method rather than getting a 2-in-1 for each chain pitch you use.
@@karlrovey Appreciate that but i still want to give them a show and learn some more about them. Initially I am not impressed with them but many people really like them so there may be something there
@oakiewoodsman Understandable. They can definitely be a time saver if there's one type of chain that gets more use than the others.
While it won't compare to a sharpening done by someone like Buckin' Billy Ray, it will get the chain sufficiently sharp for most users. It will get you cutting again quickly if you got your chain in the dirt, or hit a nail or glass in the tree.
@@karlrovey I like options so I can better discuss options. Never know what you might find may be a better fit for you.
Got 2 oregon grinders and one vevor at work, similar but not the same. Clamp sux but can be fixed. Disappointing but can be fixed. Get what you pay for for sure
Can you share what Oregon ones you have? There are a few options and i am trying to get an idea of what people use most and have good luck with.
Dang that sucks. I wanted that grinder to work for you Mr Joe.
I love both my oregon grinders.
Me too! I want to see your setup some time man!
The arbor is moving which means the rotor is bad or bearings have slop in them , if it's the bearings you could replace those and if you happen to have a lathe you may be able to do something with the rotor , but in the end it defeats why you bought the machine anyways since you have to pour more money into it to make it right...
I really would love for this grinder to work. Right about now would be a good time to be able to grind my own chains. I have been doing so many comparisons and it would be fantastic to have the grinder with a CBN wheel.
@oakiewoodsman I would definitely warranty it , to me it seems somehow the rotor end shaft got bend during assembly , which is causing the issue you are having.
Either way it is not normal for that , play can exists to a certain extent, but what you are seeing is a manufacturers defect , even the cheap HF sharpeners don't have a wobble like that
yes the HF grinder I had was pretty good. Only need more adjustment options. I did not buy this VEVOR but rather got it from Brock at Rockhill farms.
Thx for the information 👍
U R Welcome RB. Thank you for being here once again!
I think it’s the wheel.
Did you try the thinner one? If it doesn’t wobble then it’s the wheel not the arbor.
I have the even cheaper one and if you don’t get the wheel on it perfectly it wobbles.
I actually did. I was very hopeful when I saw that the thinner one was mounted to the machine when I got it and it had a wobble. I thought to myself, maybe the larger wheel would be better. But, it sure was not. Thank you for watching and brainstorming with us!
i have the same machine but its as strait as an arrow, its perfect. 👍
Awesome! Great to hear! You using CBN on it or a stone type wheel?
Morning , I think Brock dropped the box 🤪
I dunno man. I cannot imagine what would do this!
I have the same one and it does wobble too
interesting. Such a shame! There was so much potential there but the unit is just too poorly made to be a precision tool.
Even the Tecomec super jolly is way off on one of the degree scales and that one is like 400$
👊
Do you just put a physical mark where you want it after you figure it out? I cannot remember, but are you using CBN?
Thank you for being honest.
I’m so tired of junk throw away products.
Sharpening a saw chain has to be precise and with a grinder your not just getting one tooth off by free-handing it with a file the grinder is ruining all the teeth with incorrect angles.
yes sir indeed. You cannot possibly work well with this setup at all..... CF mentioned using it for rakers however and I could see that working out well. Imagine and good grinder with CBN cutting the teeth and this one taking a small nibble off of the raker. Thank you Mark!
Yeah seen them setup for rakers before, but sets them all the same vs setting them to the tooth length with a gauge. I have been just tapping them with the rotary grinding bit.
ya... I am thinking that if I get another grinder setup and all the teeth are equal, then I can try the raker deal. Certainly wouldn't work otherwise
its crazy the deals we can be offered haha, i just got a vevor 6 in 1 well se how she does! didn't fire it yet
6 in 1 what? Thanks for watching buddy
@@oakiewoodsman weed wacker like saw hedge trimmer deal haha
gotcha! I saw a t shirt press when I looked it up!
@@oakiewoodsman haha no t shirt presses here 🤣
I shoulda looked further down the list!
The entire motor needs to be replaced. Probably cost more than a new one
yep, not happening! hahaha... thanks man!
Also use cbn and no arbor issues
Joe, can you tell me if the CBN wheels last quite some time. They are an investment and I would hope they would grind quite a few chains. Thank you much
I bought the cheaper vevor sharpener on Amazon and less than three chains in the whole shaft started to come out of alignment grinding into the safety cover.
do they have a less expensive one than this???? That is pretty bad that the Harbor freight one seems to the the low price winner. Thank you for watching and sharing
Tbh my Harbour freight grinder works just fine until my grandkids list a very important piece of it lol. Now its a paperweight!
What part is lost friend?
@@oakiewoodsman it takes a special deal that tightens the chain so it can be ground.
@@tedneitzel isn't it like a bike brake handle and cable setup? I cannot remember what mine was like.
@@oakiewoodsman like the handle that's adjust the seat up and down the quick change deal. Had like a cam type deal to it.
@@tedneitzel gotcha
I don’t have on the cost of chain sharpening tools is so expensive for a good quality product i find that hand sharpening works best 👍
I can understand that for sure. Thank you for watching and sharing!
Yes Sir Oakie, she's got a wobble 😬😬
kinda sad cause it is so darn new. I thought it was going to help me out for some circumstances. oh well.... some day I will get something that works well.
I use an oregon 620-120. It wasn't cheap but it gets used alot. For something seeing alot of use, my belief is that you only hurt yourself messing around with junk.
That machine looks fantastic sir! You grind with CBN? If so, does the wheel seem to last a long time.
@oakiewoodsman I haven't had it long enough to wear out the wheels it came with yet. The pink ones are prone to cooking the teeth so it's something to be mindful of. I will be getting the CBN kind once the pink one is used up. It's all too easy to grind away too much too fast. I definitely messed up a few figuring it out.
I just watched some reviews on the 620. Love that it clamps the chain in position when you pull the handle down!
I bought it from saw suppliers now that I think of it.
did you really! that is awesome man!
Lol ya it doesn't take long to get hat stained from sweat in Oklahoma.
You know it buddy!
What's that mic you use
DJI MIC..... they sound great but I believe I had another mic failure today once again. If you have questions, please let me know.
You can fix a lot of wobble by adding gasket paper shims between the disc, but your machine looks like it's rly bad😂
Thank you much for weighing in! I dont think I want to mess with it much more
Looks like the shaft is bent. Poor quality control?
I think it is machined incorrectly or the face of the shaft isn't square. Thanks for watching
😎👍.
Nice Maschine
Greetings from Germany Peter Husqvarna-Pit 😎
Thank you Peter! Appreciate you being here once again!
Shaft obviously bent.
Amazon would have replaced the whole unit
Yes, had I purchased it, It would have not been an issue to return. I have noticed an increasing amount of "non returnable" items however. Thanks for watching and commenting!
Better stay with hand filing. Takes time, but lasts and it can be done in the field.
I grind with diamond stones and a rotary tool at time and I also hand file. Sometimes I get a chain back in shape with the rotary and then touch it up with the file. Depends on what I am trying to accomplish. Thankyou!
I'll stick to my handfile
I understand!
Thanks for showing Joe. That's too bad it's bent. It's not good for the teeth, take to much off.
Yes sir. Though I like filing I would like to have some more options for testing and getting back to good more quickly. One of my least favorite things is when I am in a hurry and I swap a chain and have a dulled chain hanging on the way. I wouldn't mind getting it serviceable so I can slap it on and go!
With that wobble, please be doubly sure to wear FACE protection as those side forces can contribute to the wheel self destructing. So your eyes are good but your cheeks are sliced up like a NYC subway attack. Wear FACE guard.
Thanks for the warning! This tool is not in use and is stowed away in a container on the shelf. I will probably utilize some parts off of it for some other project or function in the future. Now addressing the wheel coming apart. You are correct certainly the forces could contribute to the wheel coming apart, however there is not very much mass in this stone and really the RPM is relatively low but again it is always better to be safe than sorry. Thank you for watching and commenting!
Mornin
Good morning!
👍🆙OW
Vevor is trash
I am not sure I would go that far. I have a friend that purchases a lot of their items and some of the stuff he is very happy with. They are certainly more like HF used to be back in the day. All of the stuff has improved greatly in those lines. I am sure there are some Vevor items worth looking into. If all else failes, make sure you take a look at the return policy before you buy. If there is anything you do not like upon receiving, you could certainly make a return.
Buy a quality wheel, problem solved. So a cheaper machine has a couple quality issues, fix them and improve its capability. Its called making it your own. You said it yourself, its good except for that garbage stone. Its like buying an expensive table saw and being to cheap to buy a really good blade for it. That problem is yours alone. Dont be a complainer and make yourself a good sharpener by spending a couple bucks, lol. Theres lots of really good tools out there that just need a few rough edges cleaned up that can rival the expensive brand names for a portion of the price. They just need a little love the day you receive them.
I didn’t say it was just the stone. I’m pretty sure I didn’t say that and I’m not gonna rewatch it to verify. I am fairly certain that if you were to watch it all the way through you would have seen that it is actually the arbor that is the issue
