    Everyone knows this is a plastic Culvert right? The people mentioning a drill bit have the right idea but you cannot use any type of fire near a plastic culvert or any culverts, it will even damaged concrete and steel. This ice damn likely goes in at least four feet

    • @Sintesi.
      @Sintesi. 2 ปีที่แล้ว +23

      so get a 1 inch bit that is 5 feet long and use a low rpm battery drill to go through the center of the plug. pretty sure the ice will keep the drill bit nice and cool at lets say 900 rpm. and if it starts getting to hot, slow down or stop drilling. you could probably make your own drill bits using rebar and a lathe or even an angle grinder.

    This is why it's important to have proper pitch and Culvert size along with keeping the end clear so the water can move as fast as possible to prevent this. I have yet to see a frozen pipe more than 2 feet diameter, snow buried over the end definitely helps this form. Thanks for watching

    I’ve been watching since waaay back when all we saw was your hands, feet and rake. Then one day a very short glimpse of your face. Then you let us see you and it seemed you trusted us. Now we see ghost. I’m so happy you found a kindred spirit and so thankful someone’s got your back. Felt nervous in the early times that something horrible could happen to you all by yourself. I know we’ve seen glimpses of ghost before, but this rocks! I don’t know if things will go this way but little postlets and ghostlets would be so cute. Don’t mean to be intrusive,hope I didn’t offend but I’m prolly not the only one thinking that. Happy trails to you and yours , rock on.

    One thing you can try for the ice dams instead of an auger is get a piece of rebar and an bolt induction heater. Hit the rebar into the ice and use the induction heater to heat up the rebar to melt the ice. A commercial one like the use in auto shops can cost $150-600 depending on the brand but you can make one for about $50 if you can do the work yourself. Of course for it to work you'd need at least a small generator or power inverter for you vehicle.

    • @namibjDerEchte
      @namibjDerEchte 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      No need for an induction heater, even: a simple heating coil to clamp on, if not even the rebar itself, can be hooked directly to the battery.

    • @jasonreed7522
      @jasonreed7522 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I would personally avoid electric heaters near water, they are definitely capable of sourcing enough current to kill you. (At a bare minimum have a GFCI breaker/receptacle powering it)
      A simple propane blowtorch would probably suffice and be a hell of a lot safer for the operator in water. (And for melting a long thin hole heat up the end of a peice of rebar and then plunge it into the culvert slowly, repeat as needed)

    Great video! I wonder if a cutter mattock would be a good all-round tool for you. On my property, I have a swamp that I must unclog of leaves and drain into a creek annually, so I have a good bit of experience with this kind of thing. The mattock could replace the rake in situations where you need to move a lot of material, and where the rake will not fit. The cutter is longer than an axe blade (usually) and would be good for accessing ice dams deep in culverts and cutting roots and mats of grass.

    You must have the hottest blood ever Post. I saw you go deep in the slush and the water ran over the top of your boots, then you said your boots were leaking. Haha....nope they aren't. That was some DEEP water and slush! I can't understand why you haven't gotten frostbite on your feet, considering how much you walk around in freezing water with just rubber boots. You are a legend and I keep saying that the DOT, no matter what state you are in, needs to cut you a check for all of the good you are doing. Good job!

      In a vid he said that he had an interesting condition where his body reacts like an allergic reaction when it heats up, I'm willing to bet that that condition comes with a higher resistance to cold from some of the stuff he's done on this channel

    Years ago, we lived in a small town north of Toronto. There were no sidewalks in our subdivision, just storm ditches. Every Spring the town works department would come around with a "steam jenny" pulled by a pickup truck to melt the ice in the culverts at the end of everyone's driveway. Know how much fun it is playing in the water.

    Here in Finland we use steam to clear clogged culverts, it seems very effective.

    Its amazing to me how a river can run 24-7,,,moving huge amounts of water and never dry up. Even in the driest conditions,,the river is still running.
    I know why,,, not asking for a explanation. It is still a amazing thing. The amount of water is mind boggling.

    We run five inch water pipes through our ditch pipes - here in Finland - with one end higher. We then pour hot water through them, at this time of year, which allows us the pull them out creating an opening for the melt water to breach the ice damn.

    I watch a lot of your videos, it’s good to see you out there keepin the local government accountable and showing people they can fix the infrastructure in their own town.
    BUT you’re gonna hurt yourself swinging an axe in the fashion. Huge strain on your lower back. Choke up with your dominant hand and slide it down the shaft on the downswing and see if you can get more power and ease your back.
    Thanks for all your knowledge sharing.
