Thanks for sharing. I was born in Salem '94, so only know this flood from the stories

Wow. Even in the middle of a flood, Salem still looked 100x better than it does today.

Typical American comment. Just throwing 💩 at your fellow countrymen. Good job bozo.

Thank you for sharing this footage. I was 12 years old in Independence when all this happened, and we didn't get any photos or video of it. I remember it well though!

1948, 1964, 1996, today is 12-13-24, odds are we're due for another "soaker" sooner than later. '96 was freak weather, snow then temps got warmer with non-stop heavy rain for several days, way too much water for creeks, tributaries, and rivers to handle. Life in a NW rainforest.

I settled here 4 years ago in Florence on the Oregon Coast It has snowed (2"-4") every year. No it doesn't last long but its amazing to see the Great Sand Dunes covered as well as snow on the beach. I've seen rain on 4th of July, 90* degrees in spring with the next day drop to 50*. Non stop heavy rain for 10+days. This I'm told is normal. I' have also been told if you stay grounded after your first rainy season your on the way to be a "Oregonian" Entering my 5th year ! Unconditional love for Oregon.

Go to Keizer Rapids Park boat ramp. The flood levels are marked. Impressive scary amounts of water flowing down the Willamette River.

Thanks for watching. I currently have some pickles that I canned using this recipe from July 28, 2020. I wanted to do a follow up video opening one of these jars on youtube to answer one of the question of "How long do these canned pickle last?" I tired one jar about a year ago and it was still ok. Should have done a reveal youtube video on that. Maybe later. Subscribe to my channel so you get notified of the reveal.

I live just off Ironwood near Johnson’s Creek. I pass 7th and Ironwood every day. I was in shock seeing the creek nearly top its banks. I was even more in shock at seeing the extent of flooding in downtown Salem. We currently have a family member who is a refugee from Helene in Asheville NC staying with us until she gets power, water and food. Your video was a further reminder of how fickle nature can be and how close it can come to touching us all.

Our flood did not look bad compared to what Asheville NC went through. It will take awhile for things to get back to normal there. Thanks for opening your home to the family that experienced that devastation. But, that is what Americans do. They pitch in and do what they can to help.

My mom worked at Salem hospital when this happened. I remember one of the bridges over the creek was picked up moved like 10-15' and sat back down almost perfectly. We lived in Lyons up on the mountain I was just a kid but that flood was the coolest yet scariest and saddest thing that i had been thru. Our driveway was washed away, HUGE landslide on the back road coming from scio 😞 took the whole road out, mari-linn school flooded (as a kid i thought that was the best thing ever! lol) the amount of rain that the mountain got was insane. Our forest was flooded so was our pond our driveway was like a river. My grandparents and great grandmother lived in aumsville right above beaver creek on a 20 acre property about 40'ish above the top of the banks. Their 2 houses had wateer splashing at their foundations. All their property and their driveway was under hip deep water in the shallow spots and 7-8' in low spots. Fun times and core memories unlocked so thank you for sharing your video

Thank you, I appreciate you documenting this. I was born in Salem and I would’ve been about 13 when this happened, though I don’t have much recollection of it. I remember periods of heavy snow and heavy rain, but not this specifically. I lived in Northeast Salem and south Keizer for pretty much my whole childhood, so I am very familiar with the areas you were filming. Pretty cool to see.

I was 14 then. I had moved away for a couple years at this time to Newport , but for elementary school I lived by McKay and went to Swegle. I remember going to school when it snowed, but even though the rule was school was still going until 6inches of accumulation, we still had a bunch of days off due to snow.. they always threatened us to extend our school into the Summer to make up for the missed days 😂

Thank you for sharing this footage, Mr. Boneck. This brought back some memories! I've lived in Salem my whole life, although during this storm I was going to college down at OSU. The flood happened in Corvallis also, and we were very close to being flooded ourselves in the house I stayed at. Houses just across the street, which were just slightly lower in elevation, were flooded through. I remember seeing sandbags everywhere. Felt like we were living in a soup kettle for a while. Just thankful it didn't flood our little house where we stayed. I seem to recall this particular storm was the combination of several things. I think there was a cold snap and some snow. And right on the heels of it, there was a pineapple express that warmed everything up, and a boatload of rain all at once. Everything warmed up in the mountains and came crashing down on the valley. With the ground frozen, I don't think much was absorbed (at least not at first), so more water was able to stack up, and like your videos show... made for quite a mess. Again - thank you for this footage. Things like this humble mankind in a hurry!

I remember the kzr fire dpt evacuating my family in advance. We were told to go to higher ground. We went to my grandmothers in the Battle creek area. It was flooded there. Yet somehow my street in Keizer hardly had any water in the street 💦🤷 and we were less than a mile from the willamette 😅

I remember having to evacuate my Mom who lived right next to West Salem Roth's by the time we walked back to my 4 runner it was half way up to my shin. She cried she should have grabbed more. 🥺💞🙏 She passed 12/24/97

Wow. I remember this! The National Guard kicked us out of our neighborhood off of Chemawa Rd. in Keizer for a week. Thankfully, our neighborhood never flooded, despite being right next to the Willamette.

I was living in Albany. We lived on a patch of high ground. We could not leave for 2 or 3 days I think it was. They had to test the roads after the water receded. The Willamette was impressive and frightening.

I was 16 when this happened and I remember driving with my dad and driving near downtown where we drove over one of the bridges that crossed Mill Creek and The water was cresting over the bridge. We were Luck though because where we lived off of South Liberty Rd it wasn't flooded at our house.
