I suggest always getting a battery with Bluetooth now a days. It only usually costs $30 more but gives you so much information that the battery will be safe to use for decades.
If you ever want to sell it you can show that each cell is charging correctly. Almost doubling the value of the battery.
Plus you can see how much your device is drawing so you can very accurately estimate how long till the battery needs a charge.

Good point. I was just re-using what I had but that's a great feature. Is there one you'd recommend?

I always keep track of the price of Renogy lifepo4 at Home Depot. They always have the 3 to 4 versions of the same renogy battery so I can compare prices.
      No features
      With Bluetooth
With internal heater for charging below 32 degrees.
      Output current
      Waterproofing level
      Cycle level: 2000 or 4000
How many you can put in series. (This requires a higher voltage bms)
      Communication between batteries.
A renogy 100ah lifepo4 can run from $500 to $1000 depending on features.

What an awesome project! I wonder how well it would work with an old car battery and a flat back canoe... Might have to give it a try.

I had this kind of setup with a trolling motor on my canoe years ago which is why I had the parts lying around. I had to buy a mount to let me attach the trolling motor to the side but I'm unsure if that kind of mount would work with a collapsible canoe. Anyway, worth a try! Fun to mess round with this kind of thing

If you never let the lead acid battery go below 11v you might get a couple seasons out of it. Which means you are only using 50% of the battery.
If the battery goes below 11v it will die in a couple months.
Also car batteries are ment to be constantly charged. So when you’re not using it put it on the charger quickly. And use 10 amps or higher. If you trickle charge it for 8 hours each time it’s not going to last very long.

Good luck! Otherwise deep cycle marine are around $100

LFP batteries are so much less maintenance, are more efficient, lighter, safer, have less self-discharge and last over 20 years, so would really recommend opting for that instead.

Hi mate if you get another 100 wat solar panel so then thats 200 wats,,,,,, waterproof ,,,step down converter 30Amps ,,,24volts to the converter ==12volts out ,,to the trolling motor,,,it would keep your battery mabe half charged ,,,,I think you might like the idea,,,,,,😊😊😊

This is great and looks so fun. I need one of these, that is I need one after I get a pond or lake to use it on. It is pretty dry where I live - not tons of ponds and lakes that are easily accessible.

I've been waiting to do this with an old pontoon boat, replacing the rigid fiberglass top, with solar pannels(up to 1.6KW worth if i replace the whole top yea i know they say they add up to 4KW but in my experience they're never anywhere near their rating except for maybe an hour or 2 per day) and ~18kWh worth of CATL batteries. (i already have 16x3.2v 280Ah cells that i'm trying to work into a partial whole home UPS system)
The hardest thing has been finding a motor, i almost want to just find a lower unit somewhere rated for 25HP and drop on one of those golden motor 20KW water cooled BLDC motors.

The battery, trolling motor , charge controller and solar panel might make for a good back up to a gas powered boat.
