For break-in, its not just about the engine, but the transmission also. Smooth upshifts and down shifts, no jack rabbit starts and stops, and no high rev running for extended periods. another thing is, short rides to heat and cool down the engine. multiple heat cycles during break-in is good for getting everything seated. I have always used engine hours, in the past, not mileage. but riding conservatively for the first 10 hours or so, goes a long way to having a long lasting engine, that has well seated rings with no blow by, and gets all the excess material from building, out of the engine and transmission for first oil change.

I just got a 2023 klx 300r used. Dude didn’t use it all that much I can really tell. But he left it pretty low on oil by the time I got it. He had it since august 2023. I’m changing the oil filter, draining and filling motor oil. Then I plan on lubing up everything the Manual says. Should I still get it looked at at my local dealership?

I'd just do a good service on the bike and ride it easy for a while. If you aren't detecting any issues, you should be fine. Keep an eye on the oil to be sure the level is holding. That motor is tough,it can hold up to a lot. Good luck.
