I’m an Arrma guy who just bought a Maxx. Very well built. This video really helped me with the introduction to how everything works together. Thanks Guy
I soak my bearings the same way, although I use Rear end fluid since my real truck, the pinion seal leaks, so every 6 months I top it off, so I always have rear end fluid on hand. Its thinker and in theory it pernitrates better than motor oil.
So right now I have switched over to using primarily Cow RC stuff because it just works prior to that it was just basically automotive brake clean enamel reducer lacquer thinner permatex ceramic brake extreme and it was only because that's the stuff I had on hand
Hi mate?? Iv got a maxx it's making a grinding sound when slam brakes on at speed or slam in reverse like cogs arnts catching...checked everywhere except for diffsss because don't feel confident..
@@rcguygarage thanks for quick reply...I will have a look tonight..I'm fairly new to world of r c and have a maxx an x max and erevo vxl all running perfect except for that 1 little thing..doesn't affect handling so hasn't done anything....opening up the diffs looks daunting. Hopefully a bulkhead I can deal with
The piece at EXACTLY 25:34 when you take the screw with locktight off and say "that piece can come off" I had that snap from the differential rod running down the middle of the truck after smashing into something at full speed and cracking the front bulkhead. I had to replace the front bulk head and took that ring gear and pinion gear out and it was smashed. I can't find that exact part anywhere. Does anyone know the model number for that? Or if it comes in a diff set of gears you have to buy? Tired of waiting on Traxxas support
Amazing and thorough video! If you did it again, would you stick with the 100k in front or change it? Getting ready to do the same, as I want a little more lockup in the rear but wasn't sure if I should change the front while I'm at it. Was thinking 250k maybe but would love your feedback.
I use a combination of solvents. I cannot recommend the mixture as it is considered caustic. However a solvent you can use to aid in cleaning is simple enamel reducer or lacquer thinner.
Synthetic 0-30 motor oil. Oil bathing bearings is just a old habit (eventhough they may or may not be sealed) any solvent that will assist in cleaning silicone based lube. What I do may not work for everyone, it's just how I do it. 👍💯👊
500K in front may hinder turning ability and start premature heat issues with battery motor and esc MAY CAUSE. You want the front diff to have a bit more free spin in that sense.
If the bearings are sealed, the oil is likely not getting in them. Depending on the type of seal, I've had good luck removing them with a sewing needle.
It's really cool and amazing to watch these videos! I know almost nothing about differential oils, but I believe that 100k is the minimum value for general use. Am I right? I read in the manual or somewhere that too thick oils can overheat the engine and ASK.
Can someone explain the following: Why the different fluids for each differentials? What is the difference between a slipper clutch and Cush drive? Which one is prefer between them?
Diffs you can tailor the way the vehicle acts for different terrain or driving needs. Cush drive only cushions the drive. Slipper you can adjust the amount of slip (they both protect the driveline)
@@rcguygarage Appreciate your prompt response. So in the case you want less wheelies you put a thicker oil on the rear diff always or is it dependent on the center diff location? Any preference in terms of Cush drive vs slipper clutch in terms of reliability and/or longevity/maintenance cost?
@@Nerf-Or-Nothing-z9o cush drive is traxxas specific. Normally power is direct to center drive (that diff regulates power transfer between the front to rear) also think about how a vehicle launches (weight transferred to the rear wheels) the weight of the front or rear diff fluid can change how a vehicle hooks up (rear) turns and handles (front+rear) SO many things are involved within all that such as vehicle weight and its distribution . . . . 😂😝🤣😜
Depends on your location driven it only takes a few screws to check the top covers. If your diving only that then you just need a baseline for your conditions.
@@rcguygarage thanks for the fast reply I'll be wanting to check it every other week then, I bring my truck with me over the road so it could be grassy pasture all the way to dusty gravel lots to sand dunes. Going to be picking up a Maxx on Saturday so I've been going through this playlist and want to say awesome job man I've learned so much!
I soak parts in wd 40 it removes grime. But I use liquid wrench chain and cable lube anti sling penetrant for soaking bearings. My bearings now spin better longer less rust use it on metal hard ware to. Cars faster had to find better way because of my son he thinks his slash is a submarine. 😆 Now I don't need to rip it apart every time it gets wet water needs off metal parts.
Depending on the video most likely I used a combination of simple green and either enamel reducer or lacquer thinner however it's really not considered in the form a solvent it's more of a release agent and cleaner. Seems to work okay for the application. A tooth brush helps . . . Just make sure you never use it for your teeth again🤣🤪😆
For this particular video I'm using either lacquer thinner or enamel reducer. It doesn't devolve it has more of tendency to release with minimal agitation.
RC Guy Garage so is this Lucas grease And do you prefer this better than the green Traxxas Grease and do you know if the green Traxxas Grease is waterproof
Oil soak will dilute the grease if it gets past those seals. That is a sealed bearing. You can pop out the rubber seals and add grease and put the seals back in. Good video but oil dilutes grease
Great video, but I am confused by the diff fluid used. Traxxas sells their 10k, 30k, and 50k diff oil kit (and that is what is listed on their website and the manual), but you are putting in 100k diff oil and other people are talking about 250k and higher weight oils in the comments. If you want a basically stock vehicle, should you only get the 10k, 30k and 50k oil kit from Traxxas even though it seems as though everyone is going with WAY thicker oil?
For the diff fluid, you want to fill it within a hair's width *just* below the top of the diff cup. You didn't fill it near enough. Plus, (I know this is strictly preference) I'd personally, use a much thicker diff fluid. I'd use 500k fluid for a Maxx. For an E-Maxx, I use 1 million F/R, then silicone earplug putty in it's optional center diff. My E-Maxx runs *much* taller wheels and tires than a Maxx. The taller the wheels & tires, the thicker the diff fluid you need. Plus, the E-Maxx with it's much smaller 1/10th scale diffs, need all the cushion they can get for the two little spider gears in those tiny diff cups. As far as the bearings, I'd go ahead and take the seals off with a hobby knife, soak them in gasoline or the stuff you were using, scrub them with a toothbrush, then spray em' clean with some brake cleaner. Then, repack them FULL with a lithium based, NLG #2 grade (rated for bearings) grease, like Lucas Red & Tacky, or my go to.....Super Lube synthetic grease. Put the seals back on, and good to go. Before closing everything back up, I'd check for ANY slope in the diffs, and plan on some shimming....no matter *what* RC it is.
Did I watch you thread lock grub screw pins going into plastic driveshafts?? C’ mon RC guy garage you know better you don’t thread lock plastic 😂. Man do I like busting balls hahahahahaha I’m from MA it’s what we do.
UUMMMM didn't have enough coffee and YES people forget that thread lock does become gooey and help keep threads from backing out of plastic🤪🤣🤪🤣not the same as metal but still works
I’ve been doing this Rc thing for 30+ years and have never seen benefits of thread lock in plastics. I just stripped my Maxx down to completely nothing last week and rebuilt the entire thing. I like working on these damn things just as much if not more then driving them lol
I'm pretty new to your channel and I love your video's but please do yourself a favor and wear some gloves :/. Lot's of chemical's going on your hands.

Thanks a million! Love these Maxx basics!
Awesome video man! Learned a ton from this and now im not so scared to take it all apart and clean it. Much appreciated you do stuff like this!

Thank you for the info, excellent video. Very helpful👍🏾
Great content! Just got a Maxx v2 and was wondering about all this stuff! Definitely have a new follower!
Thanks you👍💯
Salted Caramel Gelato by Talenti is delicious 🥳
Yes it is!!! I keep stealing little scoops cause it's my wife's favorite🤣😂
Good video I like the content. Anything that is exposed to dirt should not be lubed it just helps the dirt stick
Incredible! Thank You for the info!
Great videos
Makes doing this so much easier.
By what other names does the solvent you use go by. Thanks
Hey my man! What are the different lubricants you used (brands)? (diff grease, water resistant bearing grease, axel lubricant, and the solvent).

Could be a cracked bulkhead that opens up at hard breaking or at reverse.

Traxxas diff lube

So can you buy a full assembled one or no?? cause that one is in a bag??

what oil was that you stuck the bearings in? and are you using acetone for the cleaning process?

Yes. Agree. Shielded clean out oil up. Sealed iI use a razor blade to remove the seal clean then grease with ceramic
Rear 500k front 100k .so it is much better ?
